As Covid-19 cases are increasing in Kerala, Health Minister Veena George on Saturday said masks are mandatory for pregnant women, the elderly and those with lifestyle diseases as it was important to protect the elderly and bedridden patients from the disease.
The minister, after holding a high-level meeting to evaluate the Covid-19 situation in the state, said Covid19-related deaths are mostly reported in people above 60 years and those with lifestyle diseases such as diabetes.
Kerala on Saturday reported 1,801 Covid-19 cases, the health minister's office said in a statement, adding that the most number of cases were reported from Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram and Kottayam districts.
"We have increased the testing. The hospital admission cases are increasing slightly. However, among the total cases, only 0.8 per cent patients require oxygen support while 1.2 per cent are admitted in ICUs," the minister said.
The release said 85 per cent of deaths related to Covid-19 cases have been reported in people above 60 years.

A persistent cough, sometimes accompanied by fever, running through India for the past two-three months is due to Influenza A subtype H3N2, ICMR experts said.
The H3N2, which has been in wide circulation for the past two-three months, causes more hospitalisations than other subtypes, said Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) scientists who keep a close watch on ailments caused by respiratory viruses through the Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratories network.
They have also suggested a list of Dos and Don'ts for people to follow to protect themselves from contracting the virus.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA), on the other hand, has advised against indiscriminate use of antibiotics amid rising cases of cough, cold and nausea across the country.
Seasonal fever will last five to seven days, it said.
The fever goes away at the end of three days but the cough can persist for up to three weeks, the IMA's Standing Committee for Anti-Microbial Resistance said.
Viral cases have also surged due to air pollution, it said, adding that it mostly occurs in people aged below 15 and above 50 and causes upper respiratory infections along with fever.
The association also asked doctors to prescribe only symptomatic treatment and not antibiotics.
"Right now, people start taking antibiotics like Azithromycin and Amoxiclav etc, that too without caring for done and frequency and stop it once start feeling better. This needs to be stopped as it leads to antibiotic resistance. Whenever there will be a real use of antibiotics, they will not work due to the resistance," the IMA said in a statement.
The most misused antibiotics are Amoxicillin, Norfloxacin, Oprofloxacin, Ofloxacin and Levofloxacin. These are being used for the treatment of diarrhoea and UTI, it said.
"We have already seen widespread use of Azithromycin and Ivermectin during Covid and this too has led to resistance. It is necessary to diagnose whether the infection is bacterial or not before prescribing antibiotics," it said.

For the second day in a row, China on Wednesday dismissed U.S. suggestions that the COVID-19 pandemic may have been triggered by a virus that leaked from a Chinese laboratory.
Responding to comments by FBI Director Christopher Wray, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said the involvement of the U.S. intelligence community was evidence enough of the &ldquo;politicisation of origin tracing.&rdquo; &ldquo;By rehashing the lab-leak theory, the U.S. will not succeed in discrediting China, and instead, it will only hurt its own credibility,&rdquo; Mao said.
&ldquo;We urge the U.S. to respect science and facts ... stop turning origin tracing into something about politics and intelligence, and stop disrupting social solidarity and origins cooperation,&rdquo; she said.
In an interview with Fox News that aired Tuesday, Wray said, &ldquo;The FBI has for quite some time now assessed that the origins of the pandemic are most likely a potential lab incident in (central China's) Wuhan.&rdquo; &ldquo;Here you are talking about a potential leak from a Chinese government-controlled lab,&rdquo; Wray said.
Referring to efforts to trace the origin of the coronavirus, he added, &ldquo;I will just make the observation that the Chinese government, it seems to me, has been doing its best to try to thwart and obfuscate the work here, the work that we're doing, the work that our U.S. government and close foreign partners are doing. And that's unfortunate for everybody.&rdquo; On Tuesday, Mao pushed back at a report from the U.S. Department of Energy that assessed with &ldquo;low confidence&rdquo; that the virus that was first detected in Wuhan in late 2019 leaked from a nearby government laboratory.
The report hasn't been made public and officials in Washington stressed that U.S. agencies are not in agreement on the origin of the virus.
Mao on Tuesday insisted that China has been &ldquo;open and transparent&rdquo; in the search for the virus' origins and has &ldquo;shared the most data and research results on virus tracing and made important contributions to global virus tracing research.&rdquo; A World Health Organisation expert group said last year that &ldquo;key pieces of data&rdquo; to explain how the pandemic began were still missing.
The scientists cited avenues of research that were needed, including studies evaluating the role of wild animals and environmental studies in places where the virus might have first spread.
The Associated Press has previously reported that the Chinese government was strictly controlling research into the origin of the pandemic that has killed more than 6.8 million people worldwide, clamping down on some work and promoting fringe theories that it could have come from outside the country.
Some scientists are open to the lab-leak theory, but many scientists believe the virus came from animals, mutated, and jumped to people, as has happened with other viruses in the past.

Visitors from China are also required to show a proof of pre-boarding negative test.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno told a news conference that as of Wednesday, only random testing will be carried out on passengers from China.
The change is intended to &ldquo;promote smooth international travel&rdquo; taking into consideration relatively low infection rates among arrivals over the past two months, Matsuno said.
All samples analysed at the border were of the omicron strains, which are already found inside Japan, he said.
Proof of pre-boarding negative test will still be required, he said.
Direct flights from China, currently only allowed to land at Narita, Haneda, Chubu and Kansai, will be expanded to other airports.
China, which lifted its &ldquo;zero-COVID&rdquo; policy in December, retaliated for the stricter border measures imposed by Japan and South Korea by temporarily suspending short-term visas for the nationals of the two countries. China has since resumed issuing visas in Japan.
South Korea has already removed entry restrictions for short-term travelers from China since the beginning of January, as officials saw the pandemic in China being stabilized.
Japan plans to largely relax its mask-wearing requests on March 13 and leave it up to individuals. It will also downgrade COVID-19 to the equivalent of seasonal influenza in May.

A study of nearly 20,000 people around the world observed that the Covid-19 vaccine can increase the cycle length and change the timing of the menstrual cycle. The research was published in the BMJ Medicine journal.&nbsp;
For the study, the team looked at over 250,000 cycles between October 1, 2020 and November 7, 2021. Participants had received vaccines including AstraZeneca, Covishield, Johnson &amp; Johnson, Covaxin, Sputnik, Pfizer and Moderna.&nbsp;
The findings suggested that the average increase in cycle length was four days and 13 percent experienced a delay of eight days or more. Researchers also observed that people who received two vaccinations within one menstrual cycle experienced greater disruptions.&nbsp;

World's first 'Made in India' nasal vaccine for Covid launched on January 26

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh launched Bharat Biotech's nasal Covid vaccine, iNCOVACC, on the occasion of Republic Day on Thursday.
The nasal vaccine -- BBV154 -- had received the Drugs Controller General of India's (DCGI) approval in November for restricted emergency use among adults as a heterologous booster dose.
According to a statement issued by Bharat Biotech earlier, 'iNCOVACC' is priced at Rs 800 for private markets and at Rs 325 for supplies to the government of India and state governments iNCOVACC is a recombinant replication deficient adenovirus vectored vaccine with a pre-fusion stabilised spike protein. This vaccine candidate was evaluated in phase I, II and III clinical trials with successful results, the Hyderabad-based vaccine maker had said.
Clinical trials were conducted to evaluate iNCOVACC as a primary dose schedule and as a heterologous booster dose for subjects who have previously received two doses of either Covishield or Covaxin.

The Serum Institute of India (SII) has offered two crore doses of Covishield vaccine to the central government free of cost amid a rise in COVID-19 cases in some countries, official sources said on Wednesday.
According to an official source, Prakash Kumar Singh, Director of Government and Regulatory Affairs at the Serum Institute, has written to the Health Ministry offering the doses worth Rs 410 crore free of cost.
It is learnt that Singh has sought to know from the ministry how the delivery can be made.
SII has so far provided more than 170 crore doses of Covishield to the government for the national immunisation programme.

Passengers arriving in India from China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Thailand will be mandatorily required to provide negative Covid reports from January 1, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said on Thursday.
They will have to upload the negative Covid reports from RT-PCR tests on the Air Suvidha portal prior to their departure.
The tests have to be conducted within 72 hours of undertaking the journey to India, Mandaviya said.
This requirement is in addition to the random two per cent tests of all international passengers in all incoming international flights on their arrival in India irrespective of their port of departure, the minister said.
