According to a report by Times Now, a new study has found that adolescent females and those with a history of allergy are at a higher risk of adverse events of special interest or AESI after receiving Covaxin. They cited a report on SpringerLink, an integrated platform for journals and other materials published by Springer. Springer is the observational research conducted by Banaras Hindu University. They have written in their report that about one-third of the population jabbed with Covaxin has reported AESI.
The Economic Times reported that of 1,024 individuals enrolled, 635 adolescents and 291 adults could be contacted during the year-long follow-up. The study revealed that at least 47.9 per cent of adolscents and 42.6 per cent of adults reported viral upper respiratory tract infections.
<h3>What is AESI?</h3>
According to experts, AESI is a defined condition that occurs in some people following immunization, with the potential to be causally associated with a vaccine product.
AESI include anaphylaxis, myocarditis, and thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome, characterized by blood clots and low levels of platelets.

A new variant of Covid 19 has taken over US. The new variant FLiRT belongs to the Omicron's JN.1 lineage. Until now the KP.2 variant has spread faster than the KP.1.1 variant.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, FLiRT are the descendants of the JN. 1 variant that came in last December. They carry some fresh mutations that help them spread easily. It has emerged from the Omicron JN.1 lineage and are rapidly spreading across the U.S.
The most prominent FLiRT variant is KP.2 which is accounting for around 25% of new COVID-19 cases as of April 2024. 
Some main symptoms of the new variant are sore throat, cough, fatigue, nasal congestion, runny nose, headache, muscle aches, fever, and potential loss of taste or smell. These symptoms are similar to the Omicron variant.
To be safe from the variant, make sure to continue using a mask, maintain social distancing and take influenza shots. Elderly and the immuno-compromised should be more careful.
While it has not spread in India yet, the potential spread of these variants is a significant concern given the country's high population density.

AstraZeneca has said that its vaccine against COVID-19, which was made under licence in India as Covishield, could cause low platelet counts and formation of blood clots in "very rare" cases.

Parents of a girl who died after taking Covishield, an Indian variant of AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccine, have decided to move the Supreme Court against the Serum Institute of India (SII). SII, the Pune-based firm, developed and manufactured Covishield in the country.
This comes days after the vaccine manufacturer AstraZeneca admitted that the vaccine can cause a rare side effect TTS (Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome).
As per an India Today report, the victim, Karunya, died in July 2021 after taking a Covishield shot. &nbsp;However, the national committee set up by the Union government reported that there is insufficient evidence to link the death of the girl to the vaccine.
The case, however, came to the limelight after AstraZeneca, a British-Swedish firm, admitted the side effects of the vaccine in response to a lawsuit in a UK court.
Hindustan Times reported the father of the victim Venugopalan Govindan will move a writ petition to the court seeking compensation and the appointment of an independent medical board to inquire into his daughter's death.
Govindan said that the admission by the AstraZeneca comes too late and after many lives were already lost.&nbsp;
He said "A few months after the vaccine was administered, in March 2021, 15 European countries suspended or age-limited the vaccine after deaths or blood clots cases were reported. AstraZeneca and Serum Institute of India should have stopped vaccine manufacturing."
Govindan has made it his mission to file more cases if sufficient remedies were not taken from the present case. "We will file more cases against the perpetrators who are responsible for the deaths of our children."
On May 1, a plea was filed in the Supreme Court on Wednesday seeking constitution of a medical expert panel under the supervision of a retired apex court judge to examine any possible side effects and risk factors of the Covishield vaccine.
It claimed that UK-headquartered pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca has said that its vaccine against COVID-19, which was made under licence in India as Covishield, could cause low platelet counts and formation of blood clots in "very rare" cases.
The application, filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari, also sought a direction to the Centre to compensate those who are severely disabled or have died because of any side effects of the vaccine administered to them during Covid.

The minister also said that a Covid helpline will be launched tomorrow.
&ldquo;More than 7,000 tests are being done everyday and the COVID Positivity Rate is 3.82 per cent. The positivity rate in the state has not come down yet,&rdquo; the minister said in a statement after a meeting with health department officials here.
Stating that neighbouring Kerala has started seeing a downward trend in Covid cases, he said he has asked officials to keep a close watch on those who are Covid positive.
Rao said he has asked officials to compulsorily carry out Covid screening among those adults showing symptoms of ILI and SARI.
Earlier only one in 20 of these cases were subjected to Covid testing but henceforth private and government hospitals have been instructed to conduct the test on all ILI/SARI patients.
&ldquo;Those with symptoms are being monitored and tested. Those who are in isolation at home have been told to take extra care. It is expected that the trend of decreasing Covid cases may start next week in Karnataka. Technical Advisory Committee met yesterday (Thursday) and gave some guidance. I have instructed the authorities to adopt them (the guidelines),&rdquo; Rao said.&nbsp;

Dr Venkat Ramesh revealed that there is no need to worry and precautions is the best way to ensure you stay safe. He told us, "As of now, there is really no need to be panicked or alarmed, we need to be cautious and vigilant. But certainly do not need to panic. The month of January will give us some clarity in terms of which direction we are headed. As infectious disease physicians, we have not seen an increase in the number of cases due to covid in our hospitals in case of patients being admitted with covid."
He further added, Another thing I would like to emphasise is that the three doses of vaccine may not provide gove great protection against infection with this new variant but it will definitely protect against serious infection, severe disease, ICU admission, and death. So will past infections also. So in that sense, as a country and society we are well protected."

We at Editorji spoke to Dr Venkat Ramesh, Infectious Disease Physician, regarding its characteristics and transmissibility. <h3>Is a booster dose necessary?</h3>
Speaking to us, Dr Venkat Ramesh revealed that anyone and everyone who is eligible to get a booster dose should definitely get it. He said, "What we as a society need to do, in my opinion, are two things: one is that those who are eligible for the third dose or the booster dose, or the so-called precaution dose for the vaccine and haven't taken it should do so because this is mandated by the ministry of health and welfare of India. Second those people who are in a high-risk group should engage in a covid appropriate behaviour and perhaps to a certain extent all of us. But definitely, those people who are in a high-risk group or more prone to severe covid should mask up, avoid crowded places, avoid areas with poor ventilation, indoor environments and so on."

India has logged 841 new cases of COVID-19, the highest in 227 days, while the number of active cases of the infection have been recorded at 4,309, the health ministry said on Sunday.
Three new fatalities due to Covid- one each from Kerala, Karnataka and Bihar -- have been reported in a span of 24 hours, according to the ministry's data updated at 8 am.
India had recorded 865 new cases on May 19.
The number of daily cases had dropped to double-digits till December 5, but cases have again gone up after emergence of a new variant and cold weather conditions.
The daily numbers were in lakhs at the peak of the pandemic, which began in early 2020 and has seen more than 4.5 crore people getting infected and over 5.3 lakh deaths in about four years since then across the country.
The number of people who have recuperated from the disease stands at over 4.4 crore with a national recovery rate of 98.81 per cent, according to the ministry's website.
According to the website, 220.67 crore doses of Covid vaccines have so far been administered in the country.

Delhi reports first case of Covid JN. 1 sub variant

In Delhi, a 28-year-old man, who had comorbidities, died, with Covid not being the primary reason.

Amid a surge in Covid-19 cases in the country, national capital New Delhi has reported first case of sub-variant JN.1.&nbsp; 
Delhi has more than 35 active cases with nine fresh infections being reported on Wednesday, an official said, adding that a 28-year-old man, who had comorbidities, died, with Covid not being the primary reason.
"The man was not from Delhi and was referred to a private hospital recently. He had multiple comorbidities and the Covid finding was incidental. The sample of the man has been sent for genome sequencing and a report is awaited," he added.
The official said multiple samples were sent for genome sequencing, and one of them tested positive for the JN.1 variant.
India recorded 529 fresh COVID-19 cases in a single day, while the country's active infection count stood at 4,093, the health ministry said on Wednesday.
Three new fatalities -- two from Karnataka and one from Gujarat -- were reported in a span of 24 hours, according to the ministry's data updated at 8 am.

Two Covid-19 related deaths and 20 fresh cases were reported in Karnataka, according to a Health bulletin issued on Wednesday. The bulletin stated that the deceased - both male aged 44 and 76 - died on December 16 and December 17 respectively in Bengaluru. One of them was asymptomatic while the other patient complained of breathlessness. Earlier in the day, Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said that a 64-year-old man died in the city due to Covid-19 infection five days ago. Asked if the cause of death was the new subvariant JN.1 of the SARS CoV-2 virus, he said it was not known so far. The person, who had comorbidities, was a resident of Chamarajpet and died on December 15, the Minister told reporters. In the last 24 hours, a total of 808 tests were done across various districts in the state, out of which 407 were RT-PCR and 401 were Rapid Antigen Tests. The covid positivity rate in the state stood at 2.49 per cent while the case fatality rate stood at 10 per cent, it stated. As of Wednesday, there are 92 active cases in Karnataka, of which, 72 are in home isolation, 20 in hospital, seven in ICU and 13 in general ward, it added. Rao, meanwhile, said the state government would increase testing to gauge the rate of Covid-19 infections. In the next three days, it intends to increase the number to 5,000 tests per day. RT-PCR tests have been made mandatory for all severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) cases, and at least 1 in 20 influenza-like illness (ILI) cases, he said. A meeting will be held with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) on Thursday to discuss further measures to be taken and preparations made, Rao said.

The Karnataka government on Tuesday issued an advisory asking people above 60 years, those with comorbidities, pregnant women and lactating mothers, to wear face masks when outdoor, and to strictly avoid visiting closed, poorly ventilated spaces and crowded areas, in the wake of current Covid-19 situation in the country and detection of JN.1 sub-variant in neighbouring Kerala.

21 cases of Covid sub-variant JN.1 found in three states

According to official sources 19 cases of COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 have been traced in Goa and one each in Kerala and Maharashtra.

&nbsp;As many as 21 cases of COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 have been detected across the country till now, NITI Aayog member (Health) Dr V K Paul said on Wednesday but asserted that there was no need to panic.
He said that the scientific community in India was closely investigating the new variant as he emphasised on the need for states to ramp up testing and strengthen their surveillance systems.
Paul highlighted that about 91 to 92 per cent of those infected are opting for home-based treatment.
According to official sources 19 cases of COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 have been traced in Goa and one each in Kerala and Maharashtra. Over the past two weeks, 16 deaths related to COVID-19 were recorded with the victims having serious comorbidities.
The Centre has asked states and union territories to maintain a constant vigil amid an uptick in COVID-19 cases and the detection of the new JN.1 variant in the country.
Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya Wednesday reviewed the preparedness of health facilities across the country and stressed on being alert against emerging strains of coronavirus.
Union Health Secretary Sudhansh Pant said that even though cases are increasing, 92.8 per cent of the cases are in home isolation, indicating mild illness.
"No increase in hospitalization rates has been witnessed due to COVID-19. The cases that have been hospitalized were due to other medical conditions and Covid was an incidental finding," he said.
A rise in daily positivity rate has been observed in a few states like Kerala, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Karnataka.
About the new JN.1 variant, Pant said the variant was currently under intense scientific scrutiny but not a cause of immediate concern.
Officials said that no clustering of cases due to the JN.1 variant has been observed in India. All the cases were found to be mild and the patients recovered without any complications, they said.
India recorded 614 new coronavirus infections in a day, the highest since May 21, while the active cases have increased to 2,311, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Wednesday.
The World Health Organisation has classified JN.1 as a separate "variant of interest" given its rapidly increasing spread but said that it poses a "low" global public health risk.
The JN.1 variant was previously classified as a variant of interest (VOI) as part of the BA.2.86 sublineages, the parent lineage that is classified as a VOI, the world body said on Tuesday. However, in recent weeks, JN.1 cases continued to be reported in multiple countries and its prevalence has rapidly increased globally.&nbsp;

5 Covid-19 deaths in India, 4 in Kerala: Health Ministry

The Union Health Ministry said that the number of people who have recuperated from Covid-19 has increased to 4,44,69,799.

&nbsp;The national recovery rate stands at 98.81 per cent, according to the health ministry's website.
The case fatality rate stands at 1.19 per cent.

Recently Disease X has been in headlines after UK medical experts claimed it is going to affect people way more than COVID. Speaking with editorji, Dr. Venkat Ramesh, Infectious Disease Physician, Apollo Hyderabad who cleared some doubts and busted myths.&nbsp;
What is Disease X?
Disease X is a hypothetical disease and is a fictitious entity which does not really exist. It is perhaps the worst case scenario that one can imagine for a particular disease. It is thought that this pathogen would cause a greater number of deaths and casualties than COVID and can lead to more long-term consequences than COVID and have far reaching economic and financial consequences for the entire world than COVID did. But we just do not know what this disease is. That is why it has been labeled Disease X.&nbsp;
What do we know about this disease?&nbsp;
We do not know what will cause such a disease. What we do know is that COVID is perhaps a benchmark to which we are going to compare this. And what is hypothesized is that it is going to be much worse than COVID in terms of all the effects. &nbsp;
Who is at risk the most?&nbsp;
When it comes to any infectious disease, people in certain age groups might be at much higher risk, like elderly people, or those with medical comorbidities such as diabetes or blood pressure or heart disease. Those who are immunosuppressed and those who are at the extremes of age also could be at risk. &nbsp;&nbsp;
What preventions should people take?&nbsp;
Even though it is a hypothetical scenario, I would suggest that people pay close attention to their lifestyle, reduce their blood sugar, maintain optimal weight, stop smoking and exercise and live a healthy lifestyle that will not just prevent the existing diseases. But if there was a hypothetical disease, it's most likely going to affect those who are unwell or at extremes of age.&nbsp;
Should people be worried about it?&nbsp;
I don't think there is anything one needs to be alarmed about. I'm sure that it will pass quite quickly as it is an unknown entity. That is why it's known as Disease X. We've had 22 pandemics in the last 100 years, one was the 1918 flu pandemic and then in late 2019, COVID started.&nbsp; So it's very possible that we have another pandemic, but we are unsure how devastating it's going to be. We all hope that we don&rsquo;t have a worse scenario as compared to COVID and we all lead healthier lives.&nbsp;

In a recent study conducted in India, researchers have found no significant association between the COVID-19 vaccines used in the country and an increased risk of heart attacks. The study, which sought to investigate any potential link between vaccination and heart attack cases, provides reassuring evidence about the safety of COVID-19 vaccination.
The study was published in the journal PLOS One looked at impact of COVID-19 vaccination on mortality following acute myocardial infarction (AMI) or heart attack.
They looked at information from 1,578 people who went to G B Pant Hospital in Delhi between August 2021 and August 2022. Out of these people, 1,086 (which is about 69%) got the COVID-19 vaccine, and 492 (about 31%) did not.
In the group that got the vaccine, most of them (about 96%) got both doses, and only a small number (about 4%) got just one dose.
Mohit Gupta, who led the study, from G B Pant Hospital told PTI that their study found that vaccines used in India are safe. &nbsp;There was no association between vaccination in India with heart attack. In fact, the study found that there were less chances of death after heart attack in vaccinated individuals.&nbsp;
The authors of the study in conclusion said that findings of their study showed that the 30-day and six-month all-cause mortality risk was significantly lower in the vaccinated subjects as compared to the unvaccinated population.
