Amid growing fear over blood clotting being caused by Covishield, former WHO chief scientist Dr Soumya Swaminathan has strongly supported the use of Covid-19 vaccine.
In a bid to dispel vaccine hesitancy, Swaminathan, while speaking to the Indian Express said that the risk of clotting due to Covid is many times, perhaps even a hundred times more than the clotting due to the vaccine.
She further said that the side effects occur within a few weeks of taking the vaccine and therefore, people who&rsquo;ve taken the vaccine in 2021 or 2022 need not worry now.
"Nobody can deny that any drug or vaccine could have side effects. Even the polio vaccine has had side effects but that hasn&rsquo;t stopped the polio eradication programme," Swaminathan was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

The WHO said that they were told by Chinese officials that there were no unusual or novel diseases.

Chinese officials say they did not detect any "unusual or novel diseases" in the country, the World Health Organization said on Thursday, following an official request by the UN health agency for information about a potentially worrying spike in respiratory illnesses and clusters of pneumonia in children.
WHO cited unspecified media reports and a global infectious disease monitoring service as reporting clusters of undiagnosed pneumonia in children in northern China and formally requested more details from China earlier this week.
Outside scientists said the situation warranted close monitoring but were not convinced that the recent spike in respiratory illnesses in China signalled the start of a new global outbreak.
The emergence of new flu strains or other viruses capable of triggering pandemics typically starts with undiagnosed clusters of respiratory illness. Both SARS and COVID-19 were first reported as unusual types of pneumonia.
WHO noted that authorities at China's National Health Commission on November 13 reported an increase in respiratory diseases, which they said was due to the lifting of COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. Other countries also saw a jump in respiratory diseases such as respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, when pandemic restrictions ended.
WHO said media reports about a week later reported clusters of undiagnosed pneumonia in children in northern China.
The UN agency said it held a teleconference with Chinese health officials on Thursday, during which the data it requested were provided. Those showed an increase in hospital admissions of children due to diseases, including bacterial infection, RSV, influenza and common cold viruses, since October.
"No changes in the disease presentation were reported by the Chinese health authorities," WHO said. It added that Chinese officials said the spike in patients had not overloaded the country's hospitals.
Dr Paul Hunter, a professor of medicine at Britain's University of East Anglia, doubted the wave of infections was sparked by a new disease.
"If it was (a new disease), I would expect to see many more infections in adults," he said in a statement. "The few infections reported in adults suggest existing immunity from a prior exposure." Francois Balloux of University College London said China was probably experiencing a significant wave of childhood infections since this was the first winter since lockdown restrictions were lifted, which likely reduced children's immunity to common bugs.
WHO said that northern China has reported a jump in influenza-like illnesses since mid-October compared to the previous three years. It is rare for the UN health agency to publicly ask for more detailed information from countries, as such requests are typically made internally. WHO said it requested further data from China via an international legal mechanism.
According to internal accounts in China, the outbreaks have swamped some hospitals in northern China, including in Beijing, and health authorities have asked the public to take children with less severe symptoms to clinics and other facilities.
The average number of patients in the internal medicine department at Beijing Children's Hospital topped 7,000 per day, exceeding the hospital's capacity, state-owned China National Radio said in an online article earlier this week.
China's National Health Commission, in a written Q&amp;A posted online by the official Xinhua News Agency, suggested on Thursday that children with mild symptoms "first visit primary healthcare institutions or pediatrics departments of general hospitals" because large hospitals are crowded and have long waiting times.
WHO said that there was too little information at the moment to properly assess the risk of these reported cases of respiratory illness in children. The agency has previously been stymied by a lack of cooperation from countries when new viruses have emerged -- particularly in China.
After SARS broke out in southern China in 2002, Beijing officials told doctors to hide patients, with some being driven around in ambulances while WHO scientists were visiting the country. That prompted WHO to threaten to close its office in China.
Nearly two decades later, China stalled on sharing critical details about the coronavirus with the UN health agency after the new virus emerged in late 2019. WHO publicly applauded China's commitment to stopping the virus -- weeks before it started causing explosive epidemics worldwide.
"While WHO seeks this additional information, we recommend that people in China follow measures to reduce the risk of respiratory illness," the agency said, advising people to get vaccinated, isolate if they are feeling ill, wear masks if necessary and get medical care as needed.

"We're very encouraged by the sustained decline in reported deaths from Covid-19, which have dropped 95 per cent since the beginning of this year," WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a press conference.
"However, some countries are seeing increases, and over the past four weeks, 14,000 people lost their lives to this disease.
"And, as the emergence of the new XBB.1.16 variant illustrates, the virus is still changing, and is still capable of causing new waves of disease and death."
Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO's technical lead on Covid-19, said XBB sub-lineages were now dominant worldwide.
They have an increase in growth advantage and are also showing immune escape, meaning people can be reinfected despite having been vaccinated or previously infected.
She called for increased surveillance through testing "so that we can monitor the virus itself and understand what each of these mutations means".
That knowledge could feed into vaccine composition and inform decisions on handling the virus, she said.
Tedros reiterated that the WHO remained hopeful of declaring an end to Covid-19 as a public health emergency of international concern, with the committee that advises him on the status due to convene next month for its regular quarterly meeting.

Early symptoms of COVID-19 differ amongst different age groups and sexes, as suggested by a recent study.

A recent study conducted by investigators from King&rsquo;s College London, found that early symptoms of&nbsp;COVID-19 differ amongst age groups as well as between the sexes. Findings from the study were published in the journal Lancet Digital Health.
For the study, the team of investigators analysed data from the ZOE COVID Symptom Study app between April and October of 2020. They then compared the prediction ability of the current National Health Service UK diagnostic criteria and a Hierarchical Gaussian Process model to detect early signs of COVID-19. The machine learning model incorporated characteristics such as age, sex and health conditions.
Findings from the study showed that the most important symptoms for early detection included loss of smell, chest pain, persistent cough, abdominal pain, blisters on feet, eye soreness and unusual muscle pain.
In people over the age of 60, loss of smell had less significance than in younger age groups. It was also discovered that men were more likely to report shortness of breath, fatigue, chills and shivers, while women were more likely to report loss of smell, chest pain and persistent cough.

The national capital on Sunday reported 3,194 Covid cases, the highest single-day rise since May 20, as the positivity rate rose to 4.59%, according to data shared by Delhi's health department.
The city also reported one death due to the disease. Sunday's tally of coronavirus cases was 17% higher than the 2,716 infections registered a day before.
If the positivity rate is over 5% for two consecutive days it would trigger a 'red alert' under the Delhi Disaster Management Authority-approved Graded Response Action Plan leading to a 'total curfew' and halting of most economic activities.

The Haryana govt has imposed further curbs in Gurugram, Faridabad, Ambala, Panchkula and Sonipat - the 5 districts that have the highest numer of infections. 
The new restrictions will be effective from January 2 to January 12. 
All cinema halls, theatres, multiplexes, sports complex, stadiums and swimming pools will remain closed in these districts. Sporting facilities however will open for training of sportspersons. 
All offices, govt and private, have been advised to function at 50% capacity. Bars and restaurants are allowed to operate with 50% seating capacity. 
Malls and markers are allowed to remain open till 5 pm. 
Only fully vaccinated people will be allowed entry into malls, markets, parks, religious places, public places, banks etc.
In the remaining districts of Haryana, gatherings of more than 100 people will be allowed only with prior permission of the deputy commissioner.

In case of marriages, whether in enclosed or open spaces, the maximum number of attendees shall be restricted to 50 persons, the order said.

There have been extensive deliberations on whether the precautionary dose of Covid vaccine for healthcare and frontline workers and citizens above 60 years with comorbidities should be the same as the first two doses and a decision is expected soon, the government said on Thursday.
Addressing a press conference, ICMR Director General Dr Balram Bhargava said the government will issue clear cut recommendations on this before January 10, when administering of the precautionary dose to healthcare and frontline workers and those above 60 years with comorbidities will begin.
According to guidelines issued by the govt, prioritisation and sequencing of the precaution dose would be based on completion of nine months from the date of administration of second dose, which is 39 weeks.
