India's Covid-19 panel chief, Dr NK Arora on Sunday said that Covaxin has shown that it has a very good immune response in children in trials.
While speaking to news agency ANI on govt's decision to roll out vaccination for the children aged 15-18 years, Dr Arora said that almost two-thirds of the deaths below 18 years which occurred due to Covid-19 in India are within this age group.
Dr Arora also said that there were two other advantages of immunizing adolescents. One is that they are quite mobile and their risk of getting infected is quite high especially in the wake of highly contagious Omicron variant.
Secondly, often these adolescents bring infection into their households where chances of elderly getting infected are quite high, he added.
Upon being asked about the efficacy of the vaccine, the Covid panel chief said that there's no effficacy study present at the moment for the age group. However, there is an immunogenecity study which indicates that adolescents produce better levels of antibodies as compared to the adults, he added.

A 'precaution dose' or an additional dose of the Covid-19 vaccine will available to people above 60 years of age with co-morbidities on doctors advice from January 10, 2022.

Dr Sharma said that the govt has specified 20 comorbidities, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, stem cell transplant, kidney disease or on dialysis, cirrhosis, cancer, sickle cell disease, and current prolonged use of steroids or immunosuppressant drugs.

Russia's Sputnik V on Monday became the third vaccine against <a href="https://www.editorji.com/covid-19" target="_blank">Covid-19</a> to receive emergency use approval in India. The vaccine has been developed by the Gamaleya Research Institute (GRI) of Russia, and funded and promoted outside by the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF).
In India, the RDIF's partner is Dr Reddy's Laboratories, which conducted clinical trials - mandatory for approval of a vaccine. Sputnik-V was also the first vaccine to be announced last year for protection against Covid-19.

Roll out of Sputnik is likely to begin end of April or early May, initially demand will be met by imports, domestic manufacturing will be boosted gradually. Vaccine can be given to people over 18 years of age. The RDIF&nbsp;is working on the pricing of the vaccine with the govt.

According to official data, over 7 crore vaccine doses have been provided by the Centre to states so far, out of which out which more than 3.46 crore vaccine doses have been administered. The govt says four states and a Union Territory have reported wastage above the national mark of 6.5%. Among them are Telangana (17.6%), Andhra Pradesh (11.6%), Uttar Pradesh (9.4%), Karnataka (6.9%) and J&amp;K (6.6%).
Top government officials, who are monitoring the vaccination drive across the country, have identified inadequate training of vaccinators and lack of detailed planning at vaccination sites as the two key gaps that have led to some states reporting wastage levels above the national average. The Centre has asked states to encourage optimum utilisation of vaccines and to significantly curtail squandering.

India&rsquo;s top committee for post-vaccination adverse reactions is expected to review data related to side effects of the Covishield and Covaxin <a href="https://www.editorji.com/covid-19" target="_blank" >Covid-19 vaccines</a> this week, to ensure they are not linked to blood clots as reported in some nations.
The National Adverse Event Following Immunisation (AEFI) committee, the body in charge of investigating such events, will look at both Covishield and <a href="https://www.editorji.com/story/it-s-safe-made-in-india-covaxin-gets-thumbs-up-from-lancet-1615274532292" target="_blank" >Covaxin</a>, the two vaccines in use in the ongoing immunisation programme.

Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech on Wednesday announced phase 3 clinical results of its indigenously-made Covid-19 vaccine candidate, <a href="https://www.editorji.com/story/covid-19-vaccination-drive-bharat-biotech-issues-covaxin-fact-sheet-1611033986884" target="_blank" >Covaxin</a>.
Covaxin, one of two <a href="https://www.editorji.com/covid-19" target="_blank" >Covid vaccines</a> to have been cleared for emergency use approval by the government, demonstrated an interim clinical efficacy of 81% against novel coronavirus, Bharat Biotech said.
The data come from 25,800 participants who received a vaccine in a 1:1 ratio and showed that the vaccine candidate was well tolerated, the company stated.
The trials were conducted in partnership with the Indian government's medical research body ICMR.
The company further stated that 'the clinical trial will continue through to final analysis at 130 confirmed cases in order to gather further data and to evaluate the efficacy of COVAXIN in additional secondary study endpoints'.

Israel Institute for Biological Research&nbsp;will start human clinical trials of its Covid-19 vaccine candidate Brilife from November 1. The institute has got all necessary approvals from the Ministry of Health and the Helsinki Committee that&nbsp;deals with research approval and human experiments.&nbsp;The three stages of the human clinical trial involving over 30,000 volunteers are likely to last till mid-2021 and if all goes well, the vaccine could be ready for mass use only after that.&nbsp;The first phase of the human trial will include a series of safety tests with the participation of 80 healthy volunteers.

Jerusalem, PTI: Israel Institute for Biological Research (IIBR) will start human clinical trials of its Covid-19 vaccine candidate Brilife from November 1. The institute has got all necessary approvals from the Ministry of Health and the Helsinki Committee, the Israeli Defence Ministry said.
The Helsinki Committee deals with research approval and human experiments.
The committee is mandated to ensure the well being and rights of trial volunteers and to ensure that the experiment is conducted as per the approved medical guidelines and ethics, besides various domestic laws, rules and regulations.
The guidelines are outlined in the Declaration of Helsinki and various relevant international conventions.
The three stages of the human clinical trial involving over 30,000 volunteers are likely to last till mid-2021 and if all goes well, the vaccine could be ready for mass use only after that.
"This is a day of hope for the citizens of Israel, thanks to the IIBR researchers. Just two months ago I received the first bottle of the vaccine. Today we already have 25,000 vaccine doses and are starting the next phase of the test," said Alternate Prime Minister-cum-Defence Minister Benny Gantz.
"I would like to thank the dozens of researchers who work day and night on this national mission in full cooperation with the Ministry of Health. In this complex period, you are the 'commando unit' paving the way for the citizens of Israel. You took on a mission of international and historical importance," Gantz was quoted as saying in an official statement.
"The defence establishment, the Israeli government, and I will continue to provide you with the support and resources required to produce a safe and effective 'blue-and-white' vaccine," he stressed.
"Blue and White" refers to the colours in the Israeli flag, which also happens to be the name of the defence minister's party.
The first phase of the human trial will include a series of safety tests with the participation of 80 healthy volunteers (aged 18-55), designated by Sheba and Hadassah medical centres.
The trial will begin on November 1 with two participants initially. Depending on their responses, the vaccine will then be gradually administered to a total of 80 volunteers -- 40 in each medical centre.
Each volunteer will receive an injection and discharged after a few hours of observation. They will then be monitored over three weeks.
