China began its most extensive COVID lockdown in two years Monday to conduct mass testing and control a growing outbreak in Shanghai as part of the nation's “zero-COVID” strategy. 
Shanghai, China's financial capital and largest city with 26 million people, had managed its smaller previous outbreaks with limited lockdowns.
The citywide lockdown that is being conducted in two phases will be China's most extensive since the central city of Wuhan confined its entire population for 76 days in early 2020.  
Shanghai's Pudong financial district and nearby areas will be locked down from Monday to Friday as mass testing gets underway. In the second phase of the lockdown, the vast downtown area west of the Huangpu River that divides the city will start its own five-day lockdown Friday. 
Residents will be required to stay home and deliveries will be left at checkpoints to ensure no contact. All non-essential business will be closed and public transport will remain suspended. Shanghai detected 96 new local infections and 4,381 asymptomatic cases of infection on Tuesday.  China has reported more than 56,000 confirmed cases nationwide this month. 
China has called its long-standing “zero-tolerance” approach the most economical and effective prevention strategy against COVID-19.

The government&nbsp;has made it mandatory to carry negative RT-PCR report for entering the state.&nbsp;This rule was earlier applicable only to the travellers coming in from the states marked as sensitive origin. The rule has been now been extended for people coming into the state from any part of the country.

Decomposing bodies washed up on the banks of Ganga at Bihar's Buxar on Monday, causing panic among the locals. Dozens of bodies were seen floating in the river at Chausa town on Bihar's border with Uttar Pradesh. The government has relaxed attendance rules for its employees in view of the Covid emergency. Persons with disabilities and pregnant women employees have been exempted from attending office, but &lsquo;they shall continue to work from home&rsquo;.
Officials in the containment zones are allowed to work from home "till the containment zone is denotified".
All central government departments will continue working with reduced office hours and 50 percent attendance of Under Secretary and below level employees to avoid over-crowding at their workplaces. The rules will continue to remain in place till May 31.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday announced his government's decision to extend the statewide 'Janata curfew' till May 15 and directed officials to enforce it without any laxity.
He informed that the positivity rate in the state has dropped to 18 per cent from 25 per cent earlier, while the recovery rate among is now 85.13 per cent.
He further asked people to defer wedding plans since such gatherings can prove to be super-spreaders. He said no weddings should be allowed in the month of May.
He also appealed to all political parties, civil society, and volunteers to rise above differences and work together against the coronavirus pandemic.
