As Christmas day neared an end, Prime Minister Modi addressed the nation to announce vaccines for children aged 15-18 years, booster shots for citizens above age 60 with co-morbidities and health workers. 
Vaccine drives for children to begin from January 3rd, he said while booster shots or 'precaution dose' as the PM termed them will start rolling out from January 10 onwards. 
But what is a 'precaution dose' and how is it different from a 'booster shot' that the rest of the world is talking about? 
Top government sources told The Indian Express that there is preliminary consensus in the country’s top technical advisory body on Covid vaccination that the third dose of Covid-19 vaccines must be different from the primary unit used for the first two doses. 
It is very likely that the precautionary dose will be a vaccine of a different platform, government sources were quoted as saying. 
'So, the preliminary consensus is,' a source continued, 'that a beneficiary cannot take three doses of Covishield or Covaxin.' 
What are alternatives for third doses then? 
According to top virologist, Dr. Gagandeep Kang, the best booster shots available are that of mRNA vaccines.
She also added that while India could get Pfizer or Moderna vaccines which are mRNA based or wait for the indigenous mRNA vaccine being developed by Pune-based Gennova Biopharmaceuticals Ltd.

While booster shots are being recommended by experts across the world, pharma company Cipla's CEO Umang Vohra is of the opinion that third doses will not be as beneficial in the long run. 
'Covid-19 will soon become a common flu so what happens with the flu vaccines is that every year booster doses are created around a particular strain of the flu that was seen last,' Vohra explained. 
In Covid, we have not been able to see that, he says. The booster is basically the prime dose. With time, we will see booster being engineered to a particular strain, be it Delta, Alpha or any other new strain and that will perhaps create a better booster cycle, the CEO elaborated.

Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) in its order on Friday said that all government employees and teachers who have not received at least one shot of Covid-19 vaccine will not be allowed to attend their workplaces from October 16.
The order stated that all such unvaccinated Delhi government employees, including teachers and frontline workers, will be treated as "on leave" till they get the jab, the order stated.
All private schools have been directed to follow the DDMA order. The private schools have been asked to ensure that their teaching and non-teaching staff get vaccine doses by October 15.
The heads of departments concerned will verify vaccinated employees through the Aarogya Setu app or vaccination certificate.
There are around two lakh employees working at various Delhi government departments, agencies and local bodies including, the three municipal corporations, officials said.
The order also mentioned the Union government &lsquo;may consider issuing similar directions in respect of its employees working in Delhi&rsquo;.

The Centre said all districts that have reported a positivity rate of more than 10 per cent in recent weeks should consider imposing strict restrictions to prevent further spread of the infection. The Centre asked states to ensure that effective measures are taken to prevent crowding and intermingling of people in these districts. It also advised states to ramp up Covid-19 testing and vaccination in the critical districts.

Reviewing the Covid scenario in 10 states that are either showing a rise in cases or have a high positivity rate, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan warned any laxity will result in deterioration of the situation in these districts.

Reviewing the Covid scenario in 10 states that are either showing a rise in cases or have a high positivity rate, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan warned any laxity will result in deterioration of the situation in these districts.

Government on Saturday drastically reduced its estimation of the number of Covid-19 vaccine doses that are projected to be available in India by December 31, 2021. The Centre told the Supreme Court that 135 crore doses of Covid-19 vaccines are projected to be available for use between August and December. On May 13, the Union Health Ministry in a presentation stated that over 216 crore doses of Covid-19 vaccines will be available between August and December, 2021 to vaccinate all adults by year-end. The difference between the two projected figures is a staggering 81 crore doses.
The government said that &lsquo;51.6 crore doses will be made available for administration by July 31, 2021 leaving a requirement of approximately 135 crore vaccine doses for complete vaccination to the eligible population&rsquo;.
