Cyclone Remal has caused significant disruptions in air, rail and road transportation in Kolkata and other parts of southern Bengal.

With winds gusting up to 135 kilometres per hour, severe cyclonic storm 'Remal' made landfall between the coasts of Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal, bringing heavy rains that flooded homes and farmland, and leaving a trail of destruction.
The landfall process began at 8:30 pm on Sunday over the adjacent coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh between Sagar Island and Khepupara, near the southwest of Mongla in the neighbouring country.
'Remal' flattened fragile dwellings, uprooted trees and knocked down electric poles. One person was injured after being hit by debris in the Gosaba area of the Sundarbans.
More than one lakh people were evacuated from vulnerable areas in West Bengal before the cyclone struck.
"Severe cyclonic storm Remal made landfall between Sagar Island in West Bengal and Khepupara in Bangladesh on Sunday night with wind speeds reaching up to 135 kmph," the meteorological office said.
News footage showed gigantic tidal waves crashing into a seawall in coastal resort town of Digha.
The vast coastline was blurred by thick sheets of rain as the cyclone made landfall, with surging waters sweeping fishing boats inland and inundating mud-and-thatch houses and farmlands in low-lying areas.
In Kolkata's Bibir Bagan area, one person was injured when a wall collapsed due to a heavy downpour.
Reports from North and South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore districts stated roofs of thatched houses were blown away, electric poles twisted and trees uprooted in several areas.
Streets and homes in low-lying areas adjoining Kolkata were inundated.
The West Bengal government shifted around 1.10 lakh people from coastal and vulnerable areas to cyclone shelters, schools and colleges by Sunday late afternoon.
Evacuation efforts focused on relocating people from South 24 Parganas district, especially Sagar Island, Sundarbans and Kakdwip, according to an official.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting to review the response and preparedness for the storm, while West Bengal Governor Dr CV Ananda Bose monitored the situation closely.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged people to stay at home and assuring them of her government's support.
Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) authorities evacuated people from high-rises and dilapidated buildings, according to Mayor Firhad Hakim.
Hakim mentioned that 15,000 civic employees were mobilised to address post-cyclone scenarios, with equipment ready for quick removal of large uprooted trees.
The cyclone caused light rains and winds in areas like Digha, Kakdwip and Jaynagar, which is expected to intensify on Monday.
The India Meteorological Department's eastern regional head Somnath Dutta indicated that southern Bengal districts would experience increasing winds and rainfall.
Fourteen National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams were deployed across districts in south Bengal, including Kolkata. The state government has readied SDRF teams and worked with the KMC. Relief materials and quick response teams were in place.
Cyclone Remal has caused significant disruptions in air, rail and road transportation in Kolkata and other parts of southern Bengal.
The Eastern and South Eastern Railways cancelled some trains, and the Kolkata airport suspended flight operations for 21 hours, affecting 394 flights.
The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata has also suspended operations.
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ensured no loss of life or property at sea, with remote operating stations alerting vessels and ships. Nine disaster relief teams were on standby.
The Indian Navy has readied two ships equipped with Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) and medical supplies, with aviation assets on standby for rapid response. Specialised diving teams and flood relief teams have also been prepared for deployment.

A total of 14 teams of the National Disaster Response Force have been deployed in West Bengal to assist in rescue and relief operations.

The landfall process of Remal, with its centre about 30 km from the coastline at 8.30pm, will continue for about four hours, it said.
"The landfall process of severe cyclonic storm 'Remal' commenced over the adjacent coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh between Sagar Island and Khepupara close to the southwest of Mongla in the neighbouring country," the Met said.
Gale wind speed reaching 110 to 120 kmph, gusting to 135 kmph, was prevailing along and off West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts and north Bay of Bengal and is likely to continue for the next six hours and decrease thereafter, the Met added.&nbsp;

Disruptions in road and rail transport are anticipated on Monday, due to the effects of the cyclone's landfall, expected by midnight on Sunday.
A total of 394 flights &mdash; both international and domestic &mdash; will not operate during the flight suspension period, an Airports Authority of India (AAI) official said. This precautionary measure was taken after a meeting with stakeholders of the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport, the official added.

This is the first cyclone over the Bay of Bengal this season.
The weather system, moving at a speed of 12 kmph over east-central Bay of Bengal, was 350 km south-southeast of Sagar Island in West Bengal at 5.30 pm on Saturday, the IMD said.
Moving in a northward direction, it is likely to concentrate further into a severe cyclonic storm by Sunday morning and cross West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara with a wind speed of 110 to 120 kmph, gusting to 135 kmph, by midnight of Sunday.
The IMD warned of extremely heavy rainfall in the coastal districts of West Bengal and heavy to very heavy rainfall in north Odisha on May 26 and 27 owing to the weather system.
Extremely heavy precipitation is also likely in Assam and Meghalaya, and heavy to very heavy rains in the other northeastern states such as Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Triupra on May 27 and 28.

&lsquo;Hamoon&rsquo; lay centred at 5.30 am at about 230 km east-southeast of Paradip (Odisha), 240 km south-southeast of Digha (West Bengal), 280 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh) and 410 km southwest of Chittagong (Bangladesh), it said.
&ldquo;The cyclone, which passes in the sea, will remain about 200 km from Odisha coast and therefore, no major impact is expected in the state other than light to moderate rainfall in the coastal areas,&rdquo; a Met Department official said.&nbsp;

The met department has predicted extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds in coastal parts of the Saurashtra-Kutch region, especially in the districts of Kutch, Porbandar and Devbhumi Dwarka.
After it makes landfall and weakens, Biparjoy is likely to remain north-eastward and is expected to move towards extreme south Rajasthan. It is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rain in north Gujarat between June 15-17.
Fishing activities have been suspended till June 16, ports are shut and ships are anchored as the sea turned turbulent and weather became inclement with extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds in the region due to the approaching cyclone.

The weather office on Wednesday said it has picked up early signs of a cyclone developing in the southeast Bay of Bengal and warned fishermen and the shipping community against venturing into the region.
Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of the India Meteorological Department, said a cyclone is likely to develop in the southeast Bay of Bengal on May 9 and a prediction of its path would be made in the next few days.
Addressing a press conference here, Mohapatra said a cyclonic circulation is likely to develop on May 6 with the possibility of the formation of a low-pressure area over the same region the next day.
The cyclone will be named Mocha, a name suggested by Yemen after the Red Sea port city.
The weather system is expected to concentrate into a depression on May 8 and intensify into a cyclone on May 9, Mohapatra said, adding that the cyclone was likely to move northwards towards the central Bay of Bengal.
"We are issuing a forecast even before the formation of a cyclonic circulation so that the marine community planning to venture into the sea could make their plans accordingly," he said.
He urged fishermen not to venture into the southeast Bay of Bengal as the region is expected to experience squally weather with a wind speed of 40-50 kmph.
"We will issue details about the cyclone track after the formation of a low-pressure area," Mohapatra said.
The pre-monsoon period of April-May-June is also the cyclone season for the Indian Ocean region and May witnesses the maximum frequency of cyclones. The other cyclone season is October-November-December.

A national emergency was declared Tuesday, enabling the government to support affected regions and provide additional resources. It is only the third national emergency ever declared.

McAnulty signed the declaration at first light as emergency services struggled to cope, the minister also added that the emergency will last for seven days.&nbsp;
"This is a significant disaster with a real threat to the lives of New Zealanders," he told reporters in Wellington.

Hipkins has promised an aid package of 11.5 million New Zealand dollars ($7.25 million) to help recovery efforts, but McAnulty admitted the cost of the clean-up was set to spiral.
It's been just two weeks since a record-breaking storm swamped Auckland, which is New Zealand's largest city, and killed four people.
This is only the third time New Zealand has declared a state of emergency -- the other two were the 2019 Christchurch attacks and the Covid-19 pandemic.

New Zealand: North Island braces for cyclone, weeks after fatal flood killed 4 in Auckland 

Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said everyone should be ready to face the threats posed by flooding, huge ocean swells and strong winds.

Auckland residents hunkered down Monday as they braced for a deluge from Cyclone Gabrielle, two weeks after a record-breaking storm swamped New Zealand's largest city and killed four people.
Much of Auckland ground to a halt as train services were canceled, libraries and most schools were closed, and authorities asked people to make only essential trips.
New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said the weather had made the start of the year "incredibly challenging&rdquo; for people in Auckland and other northern areas.
&ldquo;Extreme weather event has come on the back of extreme weather event,&rdquo; Hipkins said.
&ldquo;For families and businesses, I know that that has been just exhausting, and I want to acknowledge how hard many of them are doing it.&rdquo;
Air New Zealand canceled all domestic flights to and from Auckland through Tuesday morning, as well as many international flights.
Some international routes would continue operating, the airline said, although they might need to be diverted from Auckland.
The carrier also canceled domestic flights to and from the cities of Hamilton, Tauranga and Taupo.
In all, Air New Zealand canceled more than 500 flights.
More than 10,000 international customers had been affected, the airline said, with thousands still to be rebooked.
The cyclone, which was moving south, dumped more than 220 millimeters (9 inches) of rain in areas north of Auckland, cutting power to about 58,000 households and forcing many roads to close.

About 46,000 homes remained without power Monday afternoon.
Authorities declared a state of emergency in Northland, Auckland and some other regions, and were asking some residents in low-lying areas to evacuate.
Gabrielle was expected to pass Auckland overnight Monday. Its windspeed was downgraded as gusts abated to about 130 kilometers per hour (80 miles per hour).
Weather forecaster MetService said there was a very high likelihood of &ldquo;extreme, impactful, and unprecedented weather" over many regions, with heavy rain, strong winds and large waves.
With Hipkins and some other lawmakers unable to immediately travel from Auckland to the capital, Wellington, some events scheduled for this year's opening session of Parliament were rescheduled, including Hipkins' statement outlining his priorities for the year, which has been moved from Tuesday to Wednesday.
Two weeks ago, Aucklanders experienced the wettest day ever recorded in the city, as the amount of rain that would typically fall over an entire summer hit in a single day.
Quickly rising floodwaters and landslides killed four people, caused widespread disruption and left hundreds of homes unliveable.

Mandous, pronounced 'man-dous' is an Arabic word and it means treasure box and the name was reportedly picked by the United Arab Emirates.
Balachandran earlier told reporters that between Chennai and Puducherry, 12 cyclones have crossed the coast in the past 130 years from 1891 to 2021. "If this cyclone crosses the coast near Mamallapuram, it will be the 13th cyclone to cross the coast (between Chennai and Puducherry).
As many as 16,000 police personnel and 1,500 Home guards have been deployed here for security, relief and rescue tasks, and a 40-member team of TN State Disaster Response Force, in addition to 12 District Disaster Response Force teams, are on standby, police said.
Already, nearly 400 personnel of the NDRF and State Disaster Response Force teams have been stationed in coastal regions, including those near the Cauvery delta areas.

Tamil Nadu government has announced closure of all educational institutions on December 9 in at least eight districts including Chennai, Chengapattu, Kanchipuram, Viluppuram, Cuddalore, Ranipet, Vellore, Tiruvallur districts, as per multiple reports.

It has also predicted heavy rain in Tamil Nadu between December 8 and December 10.
Meanwhile, rescue preparations have been made by NDRF as it stays on alert in 10 districts which are likely to face destruction.
