Six men were arrested on Thursday in connection with the alleged rape and murder of two teenage Dalit sisters who were found hanging from a tree in sugarcane field here, police said.
Police sources said the post-mortem report revealed that the girls, aged 15 and 17, were raped and then strangled. The bodies were found hanging about a kilometre away from their home on Wednesday.
The Opposition has slammed the state’s BJP-led government over law and order, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday saying, "Women's safety cannot be expected from those facilitating the release of rapists and welcoming them." The former Congress chief was apparently referring to the release of 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano gangrape after the BJP-led Gujarat government allowed it under its remission policy.
Meanwhile, the girls' relatives demanded a government job for a family member, adequate compensation and the death sentence to the six accused before the victims' last rites are performed.
Lakhimpur Kheri Superintendent of Police (SP) Sanjiv Suman told reporters that according to preliminary probe the girls had left their home on Wednesday afternoon with two of the accused, Junaid and Sohail.
The girl’s mother had earlier alleged that they were abducted.
"Junaid and Sohail have confessed to strangling the girls after raping them," the SP said.
He said both were in a relationship with the two sisters, who insisted on marriage, after which they were strangled. The others arrested were identified as Hafizur Rehman, Karimuddin, Arif and Chottu.
Junaid was arrested following an encounter around 8.30 am, police said. A motorcycle, country-made pistol and ammunition were recovered from him.
Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar said Junaid was injured in the encounter.
"The bodies have been handed over to family members, who will conduct their last rites," Kumar said.
SP Suman said clothes of the other accused have been sent for an examination.
Suman also dismissed claims that police used force to send the bodies for a post-mortem, which he said was conducted with their family's consent. A videography of the post-mortem examination was also done, the SP added.
The girls’ father, a landless labourer, expressed satisfaction over the police action in the case.
"We are satisfied with the police action in the case so far," said the sobbing father.
The victims' mother had lodged a complaint at the Nighasan Kotwali police station on Wednesday night, alleging that her daughters were raped and murdered.

A nine-year-old Dalit boy died on Saturday allegedly after he was beaten up by a teacher for touching a drinking water pot in a private school in Jalore district of Rajasthan, police said.
Police have arrested the teacher, Chail Singh, 40, and charged him with murder and under sections of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Indra Meghwal, a student of the private school in Surana village, was beaten up on July 20 and succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Ahmedabad on Saturday.
The state education department has initiated an inquiry into the matter and Rajasthan SC Commission chairman Khiladi Lal Bairwa ordered that it be taken up under the case officer's scheme for fast investigation.
Superintendent of Police of Jalore Harsh Vardhan Agarwalla said the boy was beaten up badly and added that the reason cited for it -- touching a drinking water pot -- was yet to be investigated.
"We have filed a case against the teacher, Chail Singh, under section 302 of the IPC and the SC/ST Act and have arrested him," the police officer said.
The boy's father said he suffered injuries in his face and ear and almost became unconscious. The boy was taken to the district hospital, from where he was referred to a hospital in Udaipur.
"He remained admitted at the hospital in Udaipur for about a week, but seeing no improvement, we took him to Ahmedabad. But his condition did not improve even there and he finally succumbed on Saturday," the boy's father Devaram Meghwal said.
The state education department has asked two officials to probe the matter and submit a report to the block education officer.

Police have arrested seven persons after a minor Dalit girl was allegedly told not to attend school by a group of local residents on the ground that other girls, too, were not studying in a village here in Madhya Pradesh, an official said on Tuesday.
A clash between members of two families -- the girl's and those of the arrested accused - erupted following the alleged incident in Bawaliyakhedi village, leaving some people injured, the police said.
Kotwali Police Station in-charge Avdhesh Kumar Shesha, while quoting a complaint, said the incident occurred when a 16-year-old girl of the Scheduled Caste community was going home after attending local school on Saturday afternoon.
Some persons allegedly accosted and snatched the girl's school bag and told her not to attend school as other girls of the village were not doing so, he said.
Later, a clash erupted between the girl's family and relatives of the accused, he said.
Following the complaint, the police arrested seven people on Monday under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and also the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, he said.
A cross-complaint by the other side, alleging assault, was also registered against the girl's brother and three others, the police officer said.
Shesha said those injured in the clash were being treated in the district hospital, but did not give their exact number.
The girl issued a video in which she alleged the accused snatched her school bag and objected to her attending classes.
She alleged the accused assaulted her brother when he objected to their comments and also beat up other family members.
