An army soldier on leave to testify in a murder case was allegedly shot dead in the Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, police said on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as 27-year-old Vikrant Gurjar. A resident of Mudikhedi village here, he was posted in Jammu and Kashmir. Vikrant came home on Tuesday on a four-day leave to testify in the case, they said.
The alleged murder happened between Wednesday night and Thursday morning. &nbsp;According to Vikrant's family, he went out for a walk after dinner, but when he did not return, they tried to contact him over the phone. However, his phone was found switched off.
Early Thursday morning, some villagers contacted the family after finding his body near a road with gunshot wounds to his head and chest, Sagar Jain, Superintendent of Police (Rural), told PTI.
The family says he was the key witness in the murder of his cousin Rajat, who was stabbed to death four years ago. &nbsp;
Police have yet to receive a formal complaint in the matter, but they have sent the body for post-mortem. &nbsp;Besides, senior officers are present in the village and have deployed an additional police force to check for any untoward incident, Jain added.

A 56-year-old Home Guard jawan was found dead at the judicial sub-divisional magistrate's (SDM) residence here, police said on Thursday.
The deceased, identified as Raj Kishore, who was found dead on Wednesday, was a resident of Paniyar in the Gauriganj police station area.
He was posted on duty at the residence of SDM (Judicial) Mohammad Aslam, police said.
According to Gauriganj Station House Officer (SHO) Shyam Narayan Pandey, the body has been sent for post-mortem, and an investigation is underway.
"The cause of the death will be ascertained after the post-mortem report is received," he added.

Police said the woman was pronounced dead by Water&rsquo;s Edge Rehab and Nursing Center in Port Jefferson at about 11.15 am on February 5. She was subsequently taken to OB Davis Funeral Homes at 1.30 pm but was discovered breathing at about 2.09 pm.
The woman was reportedly hospitalized again, though update on her condition is not available yet, The Guardian added.
The apparent premature death declaration in the US is the second this year. In a silimar case on January 3, a 66-year-old woman was declared dead only to be found alive later. She later died on January 5.
