One person died and at least five others were injured as heavy rain led to the collapse of a portion of the canopy at Delhi Airport's Terminal 1, early morning on Friday.
&ldquo;Due to heavy rain since early this morning, a portion of the canopy at the old Departure forecourt of Delhi Airport&rsquo;s Terminal 1 collapsed around 5 am. There are injuries reported, and emergency personnel are working to provide all necessary assistance and medical aid to those affected,&rdquo; a Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) spokesperson said in a statement.
"As a result of this incident, all departures from Terminal 1 are temporarily suspended, and check-in counters are closed as a safety measure. We sincerely regret this disruption and apologize for any inconvenience caused," the statement read. &nbsp;
The newly appointed Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said he was "Personally monitoring the roof collapse incident at T1 Delhi Airport."
"First responders are working at site. Also advised the airlines to assist all affected passengers at T1. The injured have been evacuated to hospital. Rescue operations are still ongoing," he added.
Pictures show several cars were damaged when parts of the roof collapsed on them.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police said that traffic going to Terminal 1 departure gateshas been diverted at the CISF check post toward the arrival gates.
The incident occurred when Delhi-NCR was hit by a spell of heavy rains on Friday. Various parts of the national capital experienced intense water-logging.

Delhi airport introduces Self Baggage Drop facility for passengers

Currently, domestic passengers will be able to use the facility, and it will be made available for international passengers post mandatory approvals.

Delhi airport operator DIAL on Monday said it has introduced Self Baggage Drop (SBD) facility at Terminal 3 that will help reduce the waiting time for passengers at the airport.
SBD aims to streamline the baggage drop-off process, reduce the wait time for passengers by around 15-20 minutes and further enhance the overall airport experience. The facility can cater to up to three passengers per minute, according to the Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL).
Currently, domestic passengers will be able to use the facility, and it will be made available for international passengers post mandatory approvals.
A total of 14 SBD machines, including 12 automated and two hybrids, have been installed.
"While currently, passengers travelling IndiGo will be able to use the facility, five other airlines, including Air India, Vistara, Air France, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and British Airways, are likely to allow usage of self-baggage drop for their passengers in the near future," DIAL said in a release.
Passengers can use the SBD facility through a two-step process. After generating their boarding passes and baggage tags at the Self Check-In kiosk, passengers have to tag their check-in baggage.
At the SBD facility, they will have to scan their boarding pass, declare that their luggage is free of prohibited/ dangerous items, and load their baggage onto the designated belt. Once the process is completed, the baggage will be automatically transferred to the sorting area and subsequently onto the aircraft.
In case the weight of the check-in baggage is beyond the limit allowed by the airline, then the check-in baggage will not be accepted by the machine. There will be airline staff near the facility to help passengers.
"DIAL has been working relentlessly towards maximising passenger experience at the Delhi airport through various digitisation and automation initiatives. The Self-Baggage Drop facility aims to make the passengers self-reliant while at the same time reduce the time taken for baggage processing significantly...," DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar said.

CISF said that its personnel caught a passenger with foreign currency worth around ₹50 lakhs at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. The cash was concealed inside the passenger's clothes. CISF personnel were seen peeling back layers of a dress, with cash stuck to pages hidden beneath the creases.
A day later, the force added news about two different incidents of passengers carrying a high volume of foreign currency. People with 2,00,000 UAE Dirham and 36,400 USD worth approximately ₹74 lakhs were handed over to the Customs Department.

A female cancer patient, who recently underwent a surgery, was allegedly offloaded from a New York-bound flight of American Airlines at Delhi airport after she sought assistance from a flight attendant to keep her hand-bag in overhead cabin.
The incident was reported on January 30, and it came to light after the United Statesbased traveller, identified as Meenakshi Sengupta, lodged a complaint against the flight attendant accusing them of refusing to help her put the handbag weighing more than 5 pounds in the overhead cabin as she was unable to do so because of weak limbs.
In her complaint to the Delhi Police and the Civil Air, Meenakshi Sengupta said that she had also requested for wheelchair assistance to her seat, "I was also wearing a brace which was visible to everyone and they would know that I have some discomfort...because I CANNOT carry any weight in my hands at all and I'm weak from the surgery and don't need to strain myself by walking a lot." She said, "The ground staff was very supportive and helped me get into the aircraft and put my handbag on the side of the seat. Once inside the flight, I had a conversation with the air hostess and I explained my health condition to them...None of them mentioned about putting my handbag away. After the flight was about to take off, cabin lights were dimmed. At that time an air hostess came to put my hand bag in the overhead compartment. I requested her to help me put it but she refused to do so and told me it's not her job to do.

The incident also went viral on social media, and people urging the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) and Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) to take note of the matter.
Meanwhile, India's regulator- the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has taken cognisance of the case and asked American Airlines to submit its report.
The airline, in its official statement, said that its Customer Relations team has reached out to Sengupta to refund the unused portion of her ticket.

Besides, citing officials, a CNN-News 18 report said, the Delhi International Airport Ltd has been asked to demolish its lounge this week to create more space for security gates. Immigration has also been identified as an area of concern vis-a-vis overcrowding, the report added.&nbsp;
It also pointed at the security check, which are apparently a major bottleneck.&nbsp;

Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) on Wednesday said necessary actions taken to reduce congestion at the Delhi airport have resulted in "least wait time" for boarding at check points and entry gates.
In recent weeks, there have been rising passenger complaints about long waiting hours at the airport here and authorities have taken various measures to deal with the situation.
Listing out the measures, the ministry in a series of tweets said more Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) manpower are underway and four X-ray machines have been added for baggage check.

There is a command centre and count meter for crowd management. Besides, display boards have been installed at all departure entry gates of the airport, which provides real-time data and is being shared via social media, according to the ministry.
The ministry said in order "to curb congestion and waiting time at @DelhiAirport, necessary actions have been taken which have resulted in least wait time for boarding at checkpoints, entry gates and smooth transit of passengers". &nbsp; &nbsp; On Tuesday, the ministry asked airlines to deploy adequate manpower at all check-in and baggage drop counters well in advance to ensure decongestion and smooth flow of passengers at airports.
Civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Monday inspected the arrangements at Terminal 3 (T3) of the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) amid complaints about congestion.

The latest action plan follows civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia inspecting the arrangements at Terminal 3 (T3) to deal with the congestion.
Apart from posting real-time updates on waiting time on social media, a command centre will monitor crowding at the gates on a real-time basis, officials said.
Crowd managers and usherers will guide travellers. Further, airlines will be notified about the crowd numbers so that check-in points can be made congestion-free, they added.
Amid rising passenger complaints about long queues and waiting hours at the country's largest airport in recent days, the civil aviation ministry and the stakeholders have taken various measures to deal with the situation.
The officials said an action plan has been drawn up after the visit of the minister to T3 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) on Monday morning.
After the visit, Scindia told a television channel that various measures have been taken and that the situation would be resolved in the coming days.
As part of the action plan, number of flights during 5 am to 9 am will be reduced and it will also be explored to move some flights to T1 and T2 or to non-peak hours at T3, they said.
The peak hours are from 5 am to 9 am and 4 pm to 8 pm.
IGIA has three terminals -- T1, T2 and T3. All international flights and some domestic services operate from T3. On an average, it handles around 1.90 lakh passengers and about 1,200 flights daily.
At T3 domestic, additional ATRS (Automatic Tray Retrieval System) machines for baggage check will be deployed to help reduce the congestion, the officials said.
Before the coronavirus pandemic, there were 13 ATRS machines installed on the ground -- 11 for passengers + 2 for crew and specially-abled.
This number has been increased to 16 (10 ATRS + 6 conventional X-ray machines) in the last few days. This will be increased further to 17 soon, and subsequently to 20, the officials said.
Further, they said an analysis of the manpower requirements at immigration counters will be undertaken immediately, and if required, additional manpower will be deployed.
Among other steps, all airlines will be required to keep their counters completely manned, especially during peak hours.
According to the officials, digital display boards showing waiting time at each entry gate and at least one waiting time board at the terminal checkpoint will be put in place.
Over the past few days, passengers have been complaining about long waiting hours at the airport and some also shared pictures of the crowd at the airport on social media.
On December 7, Scindia held a detailed discussion with heads of all major Indian airports, CISF and immigration officials on capacities deployed.
The discussion was also on the capacities required at every point to process domestic and international passengers smoothly through the peak travel season.
During the meeting, various initiatives, including plans for peak hour capacity based on passenger processing capacity at each airport, were also discussed.

The latest instance led to a subsequent flight being impacted. Akasa Air said that its customer service team was assisting passengers and arrangements were being made to accommodate their journeys.

Commissioner of customs at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport Zubair Riaz Kamili said it is the biggest seizure, in value terms, of commercial or luxury goods.
“In value terms, it is equivalent to seizing around 60 kgs of gold in one instance,” he added.
The accused passenger, an Indian national, was intercepted by the customs officials after his arrival from Dubai on Tuesday, an official statement said.
Besides these watches, a diamond-studded gold bracelet and an iPhone 14 Pro 256 GB having a total value of Rs 28.17 crore were also recovered from the passenger, said the statement issued by Delhi Customs.
The watches were seized and the passenger was arrested, it said.
A senior customs official said the accused passenger and his uncle have a retail outlet of expensive watches in Dubai with branches at other places in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
"He was carrying them for delivery to a high-profile client in Delhi. The passenger was to meet this client, said to be from Gujarat, at a five star hotel in Delhi. The client did not turn up for the meeting. So far, the accused has also not disclosed the name of the client saying he fears for his life," the official said, wishing anonymity.
Chief Commissioner, Delhi Customs Zone, Surjit Bhujabal said, “Alert customs officers at Delhi Airport has made this (seizure) possible in spite of having such high passenger traffic.
“Indian Customs have always ensured maximum facilitation with minimal disturbance to genuine passengers and simultaneously ensuring to safeguard of economic frontiers by curbing smuggling,” Bhujbal said.

A senior customs official said the accused passenger and his uncle have a retail outlet of expensive watches in Dubai with branches at other places in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
"He was carrying them for delivery to a high-profile client in Delhi. The passenger was to meet this client, said to be from Gujarat, at a five star hotel in Delhi. The client did not turn up for the meeting. So far, the accused has also not disclosed the name of the client saying he fears for his life," the official said, wishing anonymity.
Chief Commissioner, Delhi Customs Zone, Surjit Bhujabal said, &ldquo;Alert customs officers at Delhi Airport has made this (seizure) possible in spite of having such high passenger traffic.

The Central Intelligence Security Force (CISF) and airport authorities apprehended a passenger on Tuesday for illegally trying to smuggle Saudi Riyals. The passenger was found to be carrying Saudi Riyals worth 41 lakh Indian Rupee stuffed in lehenga buttons.&nbsp;
According to a <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/explained-adani-group-to-acquire-stake-in-ndtv-1661298069635">NDTV</a> report, the passenger identified as Misam Raza was flying to Dubai from Delhi on a <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/case-against-social-media-influencer-for-smoking-inside-spicejet-plane-1660657225967">SpiceJet</a> flight.&nbsp;
The airport authorities noticed Raza&rsquo;s suspicious activity based on behaviour detection at Terminal-3 of the airport.
The passenger was then put under thorough check along with his luggage. At the X-ray baggage inspection system, buttons in bulk were detected. Although he was allowed to complete his check in formalities, the officials maintained a close watch on him.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, on thorough checking of his luggage, the officials found Saudi Riyals concealed in lehenga buttons. The currency notes were made into small bundles and packed inside oversize buttons.&nbsp;
Raza was then intercepted by <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/local/1-dead-1-injured-as-cisf-jawan-opens-fire-inside-kolkata-museum-1659806448493">CISF</a> officials who failed to produce valid documents related to Saudi Riyals. Raza was handed over to the custom officials.&nbsp;

Pilots at Lufthansa called a one-day strike following the collapse of wage talks. German carrier Lufthansa said that it is canceling almost all passenger and cargo flights on Friday from its two biggest hubs, Frankfurt and Munich, due to planned strike. 
According to a statement from Germany's largest airline, 800 Lufthansa and Lufthansa Cargo flights on September 2 will be affected, with the strike "provisionally impacting 130,000 passengers."  
The pilots' union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) says it is demanding a 5.5% pay rise this year for its more than 5,000 pilots, as well as automatic inflation adjustments for 2023, but said discussions had failed.
"We have not received a sufficient offer today either," said spokesperson Matthias Baier. "This is sobering and a missed opportunity."
