Police in Dhaka fired tear gas on Saturday to disperse supporters of Bangladesh's opposition party who were holding sit-in protests at all the entry points to the capital to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, led by ailing former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, has been protesting over who should oversee the next general election, expected to be held early next year.
Hasina hopes to return to power for a fourth consecutive term and says the election should be held under her government's supervision, as specified in the constitution.
But Zia&rsquo;s party and its allies accuse Hasina of vote rigging in 2018 and say she must step down to allow the installation of a non-party caretaker government to ensure a free and fair vote.
Zia and Hasina are archrivals and have led the country at different times since 1991.
The United States, the European Union and the United Nations have urged both sides to demonstrate restraint and work toward holding a credible election.

Eleven people were killed and dozens more injured in Bangladesh's capital after an explosion inside an office building in a bustling commercial district, police said.
The cause of the blast was not immediately known but fatal building fires and explosions are common in Bangladesh, where safety enforcement is often lax.
The blast shook the fourth and fifth floors of a seven-storey building in Gulistan, a major hub for wholesale goods in the capital Dhaka, shortly before 5 pm local time (1100 GMT).
Police inspector Bacchu Mia told AFP that at least 45 people were taken to hospital for treatment, of whom 11 had died.
"Two of the dead are women," he said. "The rest are injured and being treated."
No fire broke out in the building but more than 150 firefighters were at the site to assist in rescue efforts, a fire services spokesperson said.
The cause of the blast was still being investigated, he said.
A middle-aged man in a blood-soaked shirt told reporters he had been injured in the blast, which shattered windows and damaged a wall of the building.
"There were people lying on the floor. I escaped by climbing out from the window," he said.
An explosion at an oxygen plant near the southern port city of Chittagong on Saturday killed three people.

KL Rahul will continue to lead the team in his absence and will go into the 2nd Test looking to seal the 3-match series that India are currently leading 1-0.

At least 12 worshippers, including a child,, succumbed to their injuries after six air conditioners exploded in a mosque on the outskirts of Bangladesh's capital Dhaka, around 9 pm on Friday. Dr Samantha Lal Sen, chief of state-run Dhaka Medical College Hospital's burn unit confirmed the toll. He also informed 25 others are now being treated at the unit, adding their conditions are "very critical&rdquo; as the burn caused more than 90 per cent damage to their bodies. Fire officials suspect accumulated gas from a leaked pipe line caused a fire that might have triggered the AC explosion. Police and fire service departments have launched separate investigations into the incident.
