Prime Minister Narendra Modi-chaired Cabinet Committee on Security on Thursday reportedly cleared a proposal to design and manufacture India&rsquo;s indigenous fifth generation stealth fighter aircraft&mdash; Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).
The project, pegged to be around Rs 15,000 crore, would be taken up by the Defence Research and Development Organisation's Aeronautical Development Agency in partnership with various public and private sector agencies.
ANI news agency, quoting government sources, reported that around five prototypes would be developed in five years.
Five prototypes will be built by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) along with state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and private companies.&nbsp;
The first prototype is expected to be powered by the GE-414 engine and is earmarked for rollout by 2026, The Print reported.
"The Defence Ministry envisages that the fifth generation aircraft project would generate lakhs of jobs and the Indian Air Force orders can generate business worth lakhs of crores for Indian entities and also generate jobs at a mass scale," ANI reported quoting sources.
The indigenous fighter aircraft projects have received a major boost from the Indian Air Force under the Narendra Modi government as the government has ordered over 200 Light Combat Aircraft along with clearance for engines for the LCA Mark-2 project.
Presently, there are four operational fifth generation fighters in the world. The US has two&mdash; F-22 Raptor and F-35A Lightning II. China has the J-20 and the Russians have the Su-57, which has not been recongised by the world as the aircrafft lacks stealth technology &mdash; a primary requirement to be termed fifth generation, according to The Print.
China also has the J-31 fighters whose fifth generation credentials are questionable as well.

DRDO scientist Pradeep Kurulkar was attracted to the Pakistani Intelligence Operative, who used the alias 'Zara Dasgupta', and chatted with her about Indian missile systems among other classified defence projects, the chargesheet has said.
The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of the Maharashtra police filed the chargesheet against Kurulkar, who was the director of one of the labs of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in Pune, in a court last week.
He was arrested on May 3 under the Official Secrets Act and is now in judicial custody.
Kurulkar and 'Zara Dasgupta' were in contact through WhatsApp as well as voice and video calls, the chargesheet said.
'Dasgupta' claimed to be a software engineer based in the UK and befriended him by sending obscene messages and videos. During the investigation, her IP address was traced to Pakistan, the ATS said in the chargesheet.
The Pakistani agent tried to get classified and sensitive information regarding the Brahmos Launcher, Drone, UCV, Agni Missile Launcher and Military Bridging System, among other things, it said.
"Kurulkar, who was attracted to her, stored the classified and sensitive information of DRDO on his personal phone and then allegedly shared it with Zara," the chargesheet said.
He chatted with her about various projects, including surface-to-air missiles (SAM), drones, Brahmos and Agni Missile Launchers and UCV, it said.

23 of 53 DRDO projects missed deadlines: Centre informs Parliament

Of the 23 numbers of ongoing MM projects which did not meet the deadlines, nine have undergone cost overruns.&nbsp;

Twenty-three of the 55 high-priority projects being implemented by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) could not meet the deadlines, the government informed Parliament on Monday.
The high-priority projects included developing anti-air field weapons, surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship missiles, long-range radars, combat vehicles, combat suits for submarines and submarine periscopes.
Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt provided the details in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.
"Currently, there are 55 numbers of ongoing MM (Mission Mode) projects such as anti-air field weapons, solid fuel ducted ramjet technology, surface to air missiles, anti-ship missiles, long range radars, combat vehicles, high endurance autonomous underwater vehicles, combat suits for submarines, submarine periscopes etc.," he said.
"Of these 55 numbers of ongoing MM projects, 23 numbers did not meet deadlines. Of the 23 numbers of ongoing MM projects which did not meet the deadlines, nine have undergone cost overruns. However, not all cost overruns were necessitated due to time overruns," Bhatt said.
The minister, however, did not provide the details about the deadlines and period of implementation of the projects.

Amid the government's 'atmanirbhar', or self-reliance, push, a new generation Agni Prime missile was successfully tested on 21 October 2022.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) test-fired the indigenously-developed medium-range ballistic missile near the Odisha coast. The Agni Prime was fired from a mobile launcher at the APJ Abdul Kalam Island around 9:45 am.
All mission parameters were fulfilled, according to DRDO sources, quoted by news agency PTI. The missile's trajectory was closely tracked using radar and telemetry equipment positioned at various points.
The Agni Prime is a solid-fuelled canisterised missile, with a strike range of 1,000-2,000 km. The missile was last tested almost a year ago. The test-firing on 18 December 2021 from the same island had also been successful.
