The European Central Bank (ECB) has reduced interest rates for the first time since 2019, lowering the key deposit rate by a quarter point to 3.75%. This move comes as inflation in the eurozone gradually eases, following a series of rate hikes initiated in mid-2022 to combat surging energy and food prices. Despite the reduction, ECB President Christine Lagarde warned of an uncertain path ahead, describing it as a "bumpy road."

The ECB's decision marks a divergence from the US Federal Reserve, which, despite aggressive rate hikes, is not expected to start cutting rates for several months due to robust economic data. Lagarde emphasized that the ECB is not "pre-committing to any particular rate path," acknowledging the unpredictability of the journey towards economic stability.
Updated forecasts from the ECB reflect ongoing challenges. The central bank has raised its inflation projections for this year and next, now expecting inflation to reach 2.2% in 2025, rather than hitting the two-percent target. Additionally, the growth forecast for 2024 has been revised upward, while slightly lowering it for the following year.
Recent data showed a faster-than-expected rise in inflation to 2.6% year-on-year in May, and stronger-than-anticipated economic expansion in the first quarter. Although inflation has moderated, Lagarde noted that wage growth remains elevated but is expected to ease throughout the year.
Lagarde also highlighted risks to the eurozone economy, including a weaker global economy, escalating trade tensions, and geopolitical uncertainties stemming from conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
Analysts suggest the ECB might reduce rates every other meeting, aligning with their updated projections. However, ING economist Carsten Brzeski cautioned that negative inflation surprises could alter this trajectory. Concerns persist about the ECB's faster rate cuts compared to the Federal Reserve, potentially leading to a depreciating euro and higher import costs, which could fuel inflation.

The European Central Bank (ECB) opted to maintain its current interest rates for the second consecutive meeting, coinciding with similar decisions from other major central banks like the US Federal Reserve, Bank of England, and Swiss National Bank, all choosing to keep rates unchanged.
Although the ECB emphasized maintaining sufficiently restrictive policy rates, it shifted its stance on inflation, foreseeing a gradual decline next year instead of expecting it to persist at high levels for an extended period.
Revised macroeconomic projections revealed slightly tempered growth forecasts for the coming years, with real GDP expansion estimates adjusted downward, indicating more subdued economic growth. Likewise, the ECB adjusted its inflation forecasts, acknowledging sustained elevated domestic price pressures, particularly in labor costs.
Highlighting tightened financing conditions as a means to curb inflation, the ECB anticipates a sluggish short-term economic outlook but foresees a recovery driven by increased real incomes and improved foreign demand.
Maintaining its key rate at a historic high of 4%, the ECB announced the completion of reinvestments under its pandemic emergency purchase program (PEPP) by the end of 2024. The gradual reduction of the PEPP portfolio aims to pave the way for the normalization of the Eurosystem's balance sheet.
According to CNBC report, market analysts expressed surprise at the timing of the PEPP announcement, suggesting potential implications for future rate debates.

England's female international cricketers will be paid the same match fees as their male counterparts on the back of record attendances and viewing figures for the Women's Ashes played over June and July.
The move toward abolishing the pay gap between male and female players in England had already been recommended in a report by the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket, which was published two months ago and highlighted deep-rooted discrimination in the English game.
That report said the average salary for England Women players was 20.6% of what players in the men's team received for limited-overs games.
A total of 1,10,00 people came to watch the drawn Women's Ashes series between England and Australia, with crowds of around 20,000 at several of the limited-overs matches. More than 23,000 tickets were sold for the five days of the test at Trent Bridge.
Broadcast viewing figures of 5.3 million were double those in 2019.
The pay increase will take effect immediately, starting with this week's Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka.
&ldquo;We all want cricket to be the team sport of choice for female athletes," said Richard Gould, chief executive of the England and Wales Cricket Board," and, with the investments we are making and increasingly lucrative opportunities around the world, we are seeing cricketers become some of the highest-earning female athletes in UK team sports.
&ldquo;However, we know there is still much further to go as we ultimately strive for equality across the game." The International Cricket Council said in July that men's and women's teams will receive equal prize money at cricket's biggest international tournaments with immediate effect. (

The European Central Bank launched a survey Monday asking citizens to weigh in on the redesign of euro banknotes, with rivers, birds and European culture among the shortlisted themes.
"We want Europeans to identify with the design of euro banknotes, which is why they will play an active role in selecting the new theme," ECB president Christine Lagarde said in a statement.
The online survey, running until August 31, asks respondents to share their opinions on seven possible themes for the new notes.
These include "Birds: free, resilient, inspiring" and "Rivers: the waters of life in Europe", as well as more abstract ideas such as "The future is yours", "European culture" and "Our Europe, ourselves".
The ECB, which has also tasked a research company with asking a representative sample of euro area citizens the same questions, will announce the chosen theme next year.
A design competition will follow and Europeans will then again be asked to choose their favourite options for the euro bills, which come in six denominations.
The ECB will announce the final decision on the future design, and on when the new notes will be produced and issued, in 2026.
The Frankfurt institution announced in late 2021 that it wanted a fresh look for the 20-year-old banknotes.
The original design for the bloc's single currency was fraught with political tension, and ended up consisting of symbolic illustrations of architecture to avoid stirring national rivalries.
ECB officials have expressed the hope that by involving the public in the facelift, younger Europeans will feel more connected to the single currency.
Regularly updating banknotes is also necessary to stay a step ahead of counterfeiters "in a world where reproduction technologies are rapidly evolving", the statement added.
"We are working on a new series of high-tech banknotes with a view to preventing counterfeiting and reducing environmental impact," said ECB executive board member Fabio Panetta.
"We are committed to cash and to ensuring that paying with public money is always an option."
In an interview last year, Lagarde said she could imagine Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci or pioneering French politician Simone Veil gracing the new bills as examples of "great, true Europeans".

The highly-anticipated report released on Monday by the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC) spoke at length about structural inequalities plaguing English cricket.&nbsp; From racism to class-based discrimination and sexism, the 317-page report 'Holding Up a Mirror to Cricket', relied on evidence from more than 4000 respondents since the commission was constituted in 2020.&nbsp; Among its findings, racism was 'entrenched' in the English game, women were treated as 'second-class citizens', and cricket was a rare option in state schools. The report then went on to state that complaints were not paid heed to as the system was confusing and not fit for purpose.&nbsp; Calling for rapid reforms, the report submitted 44 recommendations and a number of sub-recommendations.&nbsp; In the first recommendation, the ICEC report demanded a public apology from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for its own failings and those of the game it governs.&nbsp; It also asked the governing body to 'acknowledge that racism, sexism, elitism and class-based discrimination have existed, and still exist, in the game, and recognise the impact on victims of discrimination.' Among the most prominent suggestions, the ICEC recommended equal pay for women cricketers, calling it a fundamental overhaul. It asked for the implementation at domestic level by 2029 and international level by 2030. It also paid careful attention to school cricket that has a history of discrimination as elite, private schools and their clubs have been given precedence over state schools. The preferences do play a role in obstructing good talent from reaching their potential. It called for an immediate reform and make it more meritocratic, inclusive, accountable, transparent and consistent.&nbsp; Another important recommendation was the creation of a regulatory body separate from the governing England and Wales Cricket Board. It said, 'The new regulatory body, not the ECB, should be responsible for investigating alleged regulatory breaches and for making decisions about whether to bring charges,' adding that breaches should include anti-discrimination rules.&nbsp; The ECB said some reforms could be 'implemented swiftly' but others would require 'fundamental, longer-term changes to cricket in England and Wales, and its funding model.'

England grabbed back-to-back wins in Pakistan for the first time ever as they beat Babar Azam's side by 26 runs to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the 3-match series at the Multan Cricket Stadium on Monday.
This was only England's fourth Test they've won in the country, which got them their first series victory in Pakistan since 2000-01.
Pakistan on the other hand have lost three consecutive Tests at home for the first time since 1959. It proved to be a double whammy as they are now out of the World Test Championship final race as well after dropping down to 6th place in the standings.
Chasing 355 runs, Pakistan got close and at one stage were threatening to take the game away from England, but Mark Wood bowled an inspired spell to send both the set batters - Mohd Nawaz for 45 before snaffling the well-set Saud Shakeel (94) six short of his hundred. In the end, the hosts were bowled out for 328.

Rafiq had alleged that he was subjected to racist abuse and bullying during his two tenures at the club between 2008&ndash;2014, and 2016&ndash;2018 and accused the club of being institutionally racist.
However, Rafiq has himself been accused of making &ldquo;anti-Semitic&rdquo; comments in the past, for which he has now apologised. He apologised for using anti-Semitic language in a Facebook exchange from 2011. While Gale was suspended by the club in November for a tweet he sent out in 2010.
England batter Danni Wyatt, Somerset fast bowler Jack Brooks and Birmingham Phoenix&rsquo;s Eve Jones have also been reprimanded. All five admitted to the posts.
Wyatt and Jones&rsquo; charge relates to a &ldquo;Blackface&rdquo; Instagram post from 2013 while Brooks used racist language in old tweets.

The England Cricket Board has floated an idea of an India-Pakistan Test series on English soil. Reportedly, the deputy chairman of ECB, Martin Darlow, held talks with the Pakistan Cricket Board and offered England's grounds as venues for ideally a 3-match Test series in future.
A senior BCCI official told PTI that a series against Pakistan is not something that the BCCI will decide but it is the decision of the government.

Indian Women's cricket team player Taniya Bhatia got her bag stolen from her hotel room which had the player's personal properties inside. The player took to Twitter to criticize the authorities concerned.

The Indian player took to her Twitter account to slam the hotel security and asked the England Cricket Board to further investigate into the matter as soon as possible. She admitted to be shocked at the level of security that had been arranged for the players as well.
Taniya was with the team for India's ODI and T20I series against England from 10-24 September.
"Shocked and disappointed at Marriot Hotel London Maida Vale management; someone walked into my personal room and stole my bag with cash, cards, watches and jewellery during my recent stay as a part of Indian Women's Cricket team. @MarriottBonvoy @Marriott. So unsafe," Taniya Bhatia said in a tweet.
"Hoping for a quick investigation and resolution of this matter. Such lack of security at @ECB_cricket's preferred hotel partner is astounding. Hope they will take cognisance as well," she added.
The hotel had later responded to her tweet asking for her personal details as well.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Friday announced the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup which is scheduled to be played in Australia in October. While Jos Buttler will lead the side, opener Jason Roy who has been out of form for almost a year has been dropped from the 15-member squad.
But the big blow for the Three Lions came in the form of wicket keeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow. The in-form Yorkshireman was named in the squad when it was first revealed, but subsequently, ECB issued a statement that he has been ruled out for the rest of the summer due to a &lsquo;freak accident&rsquo; whilst playing golf.&nbsp;

 According to the statement, Bairstow sustained a lower limb injury and will see a specialist next week. His replacement will be announced in due course.
