The Election Commission on Wednesday asked the BJP and the Congress to desist from campaigning along caste, community, language, and religious lines, asserting that India&rsquo; socio-cultural milieu cannot be made a casualty to elections.
This comes nearly a month after it issued notice to BJP president J P Nadda on opposition charge that Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a divisive speech in Rajasthan's Banswara, the poll watchdog rejected his defence and asked him and his party's star campaigners to desist from campaigning on religious and communal lines.
It also asked the BJP to stop campaign speeches that may divide society.
Along with Nadda, the EC had issued a similar notice to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge asking him to respond to the complaints filed by the BJP against him and the main opposition party's senior leader Rahul Gandhi regarding their remarks.
The EC also rejected his defence and asked the Congress not to politicise defence forces and make potentially divisive statements regarding socio-economic composition of the armed forces.
It also asked the Congress to ensure that its star campaigners and candidates do not make statements which give false impression that the Constitution may be abolished or sold.
The EC asked the presidents of the two national parties to issue formal notes to their star campaigners to correct their discourse, exercise care and maintain decorum.&nbsp;

The Election Commission of India (ECI) Tuesday imposed a 24-hour ban on campaigning by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Calcutta High Court judge, Abhijit Gangopadhyay. The decision followed his recent controversial remarks against West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mamata Banerjee, Bar and Bench reported.&nbsp;
As per a report by the legal portal, the ban commences at 5 PM on May 21. Condemning strongly Gangopadhyay's remarks, The ECI noted Gangopadhyay, "made a low-level personal attack and thus violated the provisions of Model Code of Conduct, adding that his comments tarnished the state's reputation, which is known for its respect for women.
During a public meeting in Haldia on May 15, Gangopadhyay allegedly made offensive comments about Mamata Banerjee, questioning her integrity and making derogatory remarks about her appearance and gender. These remarks prompted the All-India Trinamool Congress to file a complaint with the ECI.
Notably, the former judge is not new to controversy. Earlier, he had accused fellow judge Justice Soumen Sen of political bias, leading the Supreme Court to intervene and transfer related proceedings. Gangopadhyay resigned in March, months before his scheduled retirement.&nbsp;

The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the Madhya Pradesh High Court order asking political parties to conduct their campaign for the November 3 assembly bypolls virtually instead of holding physical rallies due to COVID-19. The bench asked the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take an appropriate decision with regard to political rallies as per law and keeping in mind the pandemic guidelines. The top court was hearing pleas of the ECI and Madhya Pradesh Energy minister Pradyuman Singh Tomar challenging the state high court&rsquo;s order of October 20.
