In the fast growing ride hailing market, electric cab operator BluSmart is seeking to raise more than $300 million in three years to add thousands of cars to its fleet, reported Bloomberg. BluSmart's co-founder Punit Goyal in an interview to Bloomberg said that the company will increase its Indian fleet of electric vehicles to 13,000 by March from 7,500 currently. In three years, the firm aims to have 25,000 cars
The EVs are supplied by Tata Motors Ltd., BYD Co., SAIC Motor Corp.&rsquo;s MG Motor and Stellantis NV&rsquo;s Citro&euml;n
<h3>BluSmart funding</h3>
As per Bloomberg, part of the funding it raises will go toward the company&rsquo;s expansion beyond Delhi and Bengaluru. Next month, the company will launch in Dubai with about 100 Audi EVs, and plans to run 300 Audi and Tesla Inc. vehicles there by December.
BluSmart's expansion plans come even as Uber and Ola dominate India's ride-hailing market share. However, both the companies are struggling to make profit consistently and are facing a slew of complaints about deteriorating services. Meanwhile, BluSmart is planning to tap into customers who are willing to pay more for a better experience. As per Bloomberg, the startup says it can deliver because it exclusively operates its fleet of cars on long-term leases whereas the drivers who work for its rivals must own their own vehicles.
&ldquo;We don&rsquo;t want to go to small cities because that&rsquo;s not where the revenue comes from,&rdquo; said Goyal. &ldquo;Cheap rides, cheap quality, cheap service and cheap pricing are not our forte.&rdquo;
The company also estimates that it will almost double annual revenue to $110 million by March 2025, based on its current monthly financial performance.
<h3>Electric vehicle penetration</h3>
BluSmart's rivals are also rolling out greener options to its customers. Uber last year said it will add 25,000 electric vehicles to its platform in India, though didn&rsquo;t specify a timeline, and Ola began deploying 10,000 electric scooters earlier this year.
BluSmart, which has secured $200 million in equity and long-term growth debt so far, is currently raising $25 million that Goyal said includes investment from its founders, existing investors, family offices and founders of other startups.The funding round, which is part of its three-year $300-million plan, will close by late June

Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD is planning to cover 90% of Indian Electric Vehicle (EV) market this year. As per PTI, this comes as the company is looking to strengthen leadership positions in EVs priced above Rs 30 lakh category.
"Our target is that we cover 90 per cent of the EV market in India. That is what we are planning to do by this year, which means we will be present in major towns, and tier I cities", BYD India, Senior Vice President of Electric Passenger Vehicle Business Sanjay Gopalakrishnan told PTI.
"Wherever we see the electric vehicle penetration is high, wherever the electric vehicle sales are, where it is growing," he added.
<h3>BYD eyes India</h3>
BYD India, which launched its electric sedan SEAL priced between Rs 41 lakh and Rs 53 lakh, is working to achieve homologation certification from ARAI for its electric SUV Atto 3 which will lift the restriction on import volume of 2,500 units.
Homologation is the process of certifying vehicles for roadworthiness under rules specified by the government for all vehicles made or imported into the country.
At present, BYD India's passenger vehicles division has a dealership network with 24 showrooms across 21 cities selling two products in its portfolio - the BYD ATTO 3 and the e6.&nbsp; Passenger EVs in India are mostly sold in metros and tier I cities currently and are gradually covering tier II as well in lower priced models.
"If you look at the Rs 30 lakh-plus luxury EV sales, we are the market leader there. So with the BYD seal, we are adding one more car to that category. We want to be the market leader in that segment," Gopalakrishnan said.

When asked if the government's rejection of the company's plans to set up a USD 1 billion manufacturing plant at Hyderabad has hindered its progress in India, he said, "Whatever is the demand, we are trying to cater to that as per the government regulations, that is what we are going to do because we are in the Rs 30 lakh-plus category. It's a limited market. So, we are playing within that market." As and when things start up well and when the demand is going to increase, he said, "Then we will see what the next plans are and how to do that." Asked about the need for local assembly in India for the company to enter the lower-priced segment of the EV market in India, Gopalakrishnan declined to comment saying "when the right time comes then we will come back with plans".
BYD India is importing its SEAL sedan under the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) vehicle certification, while for its Atto 3 electric SUV, he said, "We are selling as per the GSR 870 CIRT certificate".
It puts a cap on the total number of vehicles allowed to be imported to 2,500 units per model.
"Once we get a homologation certificate, the number restriction goes away so we can always import more cars. We need an ARAI certificate and we will get that also. Atto 3 will have a homologation certificate from ARAI soon," he said.&nbsp;

Electric Vehicle Transition:&nbsp;A new report by London-based think-tank Carbon Tracker has revealed that nations that are slow in adapting to electric vehicle are at a major risk of accumulating used gasoline based cars.
Senior automotive analyst at Carbon Tracker, Ben Scott wrote in the report that automakers may resort to selling older, polluting models in Africa, Asia and South America as China, North America and Europe are phasing out internal combustion engine vehicles.
<h3>Countries with weak decarbonisation target</h3>
The report has identified India, Australia, Thailand, Turkey, Indonesia, Malaysia, Russia and South Africa as the countries with weak or no targets to decarbonise cars. As the momentum to use recycled materials for battery production is rising in some places, it would be difficult for many of the countries to to import second-hand EVs from them.

Scott also mentioned that the financial burden of imports on developing nations will also get worse without clear goals to end sales of gasoline vehicles. For Instance, Africa spends $80 billion a year on importing transport fuels, accounting for 2.5% of its gross domestic product.
The report also mentions that Asia and South America together could save over $100 billion a year on fuel imports and reduce trade deficits through policies that aid EV adoption.
<h3>Steps to aide energy transition</h3>
The Carbon Tracker report also lists down the steps that the governments have to take for the EV transition. It says, government should incentivise &nbsp;the shift with policies such as import bans and age restrictions on used cars, emission limits and the removal of tariffs on EVs. Increasing domestic production and recycling of EVs are also crucial steps to cut transport emissions.&nbsp;
The report further mentions that, accelerating the switch to battery-powered vehicles will open up economic opportunities ranging from mineral mining and manufacturing to sales, infrastructure and recycling for developing markets

After punitive action by department of heavy industries, sales of electric two-wheelers have dropped by nearly a fourth in the month of April

Electric two-wheeler sales in the month of April has fell by nearly a fourth to 62,581 from 82,292, as per data from VAHAN. This has come after the department of heavy industries took punitive action against Hero Electric and Okinawa, based on a whistleblower complaint. The department is conducting audit investigation on the two companies, after allegations of breaking the localisation requirement of 50% on their scooters surfaced. Without this localisation requirement, subsidies can't be claimed.
After this, the two companies' registration plunged by 43% in April over March. The companies together hold 10% of the market share whereas the total share in 2022 was 31%.&nbsp;
As per Business Standard, electric two-wheeler companies, including Okinawa, Hero Electric, Ather Energy, and TVS, have all clocked their lowest registrations in the four months of this calendar year. However, Ola electric has recorded 21,560 registrations in April which is the highest in the year so far.&nbsp;
The department of heavy industries has with-held &nbsp;as much as Rs 1,200 crore of subsidies. A huge amount belongs to Hero Electric and Okinawa. Action against Ather, Ola, TVS, and Hero Motocorp has also been taken for &nbsp;allegedly violating subsidy norms by charging customers separately for an accessory for the charger, rather than incorporating it within the ex-factory price. As per Business Standard, there is a cap of Rs 1.5 lakh on the ex-factory price on electric two-wheelers for availing the FAME 2 subsidy.
Ather's sales have fallen by 37% registering 7,675 in April while TVS's registration has fallen by nearly 50% to 8,718 in April.

Electric vehicle sales in India stood at 49,800 last year, accounting for just 1.3% of 3.8 million passenger vehicles sold. The report also observed that smaller SUVs are becoming popular as they easily maneuver through India&rsquo;s potholed roads and bad traffic, while offering aspirational buyers a status symbol.&nbsp;
However, India is still lagging behind nations like China and the U.S. in adopting electric vehicles. In India, most carmakers are hesitant to make the switch because electric cars are costlier than internal combustion engines. Similarly, lack of public charging stations also prevent customers from buying.&nbsp;
Warren Buffett-backed BYD Co. seeks to capture 40% of India&rsquo;s EV market by 2030, while SAIC Motor Corp. is planning to launch three EVs by the end of 2024. Domestic manufacturer, Tata Motors Ltd., is planning to invest $2.2 billion, while the nation&rsquo;s biggest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. has committed $1.2 billion.&nbsp;

Mahindra is likely to raise capital in multiple tranches over the next two fiscal years, primarily through stake sales in the EV subsidiary.&nbsp; Mahindra is preparing to establish a new EV factory near Pune and developing platforms for its upcoming electric sport utility vehicles. The conglomerate has estimated an investment requirement of at least ₹10,000 crore for its EV business over the next 2-3 years.
Last year, Mahindra and British International Investment (BII) signed a binding agreement to invest as much as $250 million each into Mahindra&rsquo;s EV subsidiary.&nbsp;

Currently, India is import-dependent for many minerals like lithium, nickel and cobalt.

Gadkari launches Toyota's pilot project on flex fuel-strong hybrid EV. Here's all you need to know

Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday launched Japanese car maker Toyota's first-of-its-kind pilot project on flex fuel-strong hybrid electric vehicle (FFV-SHEV) that can run on 100 per cent ethanol.

A flex-fuel engine offers the owner the flexibility of running the car on petrol, ethanol or a blend of petrol and ethanol.

&nbsp;Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday launched Japanese car maker Toyota's first-of-its-kind pilot project on flex fuel-strong hybrid electric vehicle (FFV-SHEV) that can run on 100 per cent ethanol.
During the launch, the Toyota Corolla Altis FFV-SHEV, which has been imported from Toyota Brazil for the pilot project, was unveiled.
Speaking on the occasion, Union Road Transport minister Nitin Gadkari said pollution is a big concern in India and the transport sector is contributing to pollution.
"Therefore, there is a need to encourage use of electric vehicles and vehicles that run on biofuels like ethanol and methanol," he added.
Besides Gadkari, union ministers Mahendra Nath Pandey, Bhupinder Yadav and senior officials of Toyota Kirloskar Motor were present at the event.
In Brazil, flex fuel-strong hybrid electric vehicle technology has been introduced by Toyota Brazil.
An FFV-SHEV has a flex-fuel engine and an electric powertrain, thus providing dual benefit of higher ethanol use and greater fuel efficiency, as it can run for a significant time period on its EV mode, wherein the engine is shut off.
Flex-fuel compatible cars can run on more than one type of fuel and also a mixture. Typically, a blend of petrol and ethanol or methanol is used.
FFVs provide an opportunity of greater substitution of petrol by ethanol as it is capable of using any of the higher blends of ethanol mix from 20 per cent up to 100 per cent.
Flex-fuel vehicles are available in Brazil, the USA and Canada.
Ethanol is a major alternate fuel used globally and Brazil has the highest average blending of 48 per cent.
Toyota Corolla Altis FFV-SHEV will be able to run on fuel that has ethanol blending between 20 and up to 100 per cent.
The government is working to encourage the use of green and alternative fuels.
Last year, the government issued an advisory to carmakers to introduce flexible-fuel engines in vehicles.
In March this year, Gadkari had launched India's first green hydrogen-based advanced fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), Toyota Mirai, and had said this is the first-of-its-kind project in India that aims to create an ecosystem for such vehicles in the country.
Toyota's Kirloskar's vice chairman Vikram Kirloskar said India has achieved 10 per cent ethanol blending in the shortest time and will achieve 20 per cent by 2025.
Union environment minister Bhupendra Yadav said the next 40 days will be the most difficult time for Delhi because of stubble burnings in neighbouring states. "We can manage 24 lakh tonnes of stubble this year by mechanisation," Yadav added.
Gadkari further said a 6 to 8 per cent increase in agricultural growth rate is necessary for Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
He emphasized on the importance of converting surplus foodgrain and sugar into ethanol for boosting the rural economy.
Encouraging 'Anndatas' to become 'Urjadatas', Gadkari said the success of this pilot project will create an ecosystem of electric vehicles and make New India, a global leader in manufacturing these electric vehicles.

Incidents Of Explosions In Four Weeks
On March 26, the first fire incident came to light after a video of an Ola EV ablaze went viral on social media. The same day, a father and daughter duo were killed in an Okinawa electric scooter explosion in Vellore, Tamil Nadu. On March 30, an e-scooter manufactured by Pure EV caught fire. In another incident, on April 11, a container truck carrying 20 EVs owned by Jitendra Electric Vehicles caught fire in Nashik.
 On April 18, an Okinawa Autotech dealership was gutted to fire in Tamil Nadu, owing to a possible short circuit.
 In the recent and sixth fire incident which took place last week, a Pure EV explosion claimed the life of an 80-year-old, while two others sustained serious injuries.

These 'voluntary' recalls were announced just as the&nbsp;&nbsp;Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari asked EV makers to take &ldquo;advance action&rdquo; immediately. Gadkari said the companies found negligent will be penalised. There is also a buzz that the govt is looking to douse the problem by coming out with a battery policy which will cover performance testing and manufacturing standards, along with heat resistance of these batteries.

Thermal runaway is a chain reaction within a battery cell that can be very difficult to stop once it has started. This chemical reaction produces even more heat, which drives the temperature higher, causing further chemical reactions that create more heat. Sudden acceleration or prolonged charging/fast charging of the vehicles can aggravate the issue.&nbsp;

Despite science fiction predictions, our four-wheelers have not yet been replaced by their flying cousins. But this technology has caught the attention of the US military.&nbsp;

The US military has reportedly identified over 60 uses for flying vehicles. Some of the main ones include infiltration and exfiltration of special operations forces, rescuing downed personnel from enemy territory, quickly setting up bases in conflict zones, and transporting cargo and personnel.
Flying vehicles might end up playing an important role in conflict, especially in light of the Russia-Ukraine war. eVTOL aircraft might help the US military apply lessons from the Russia-Ukraine war. Russia is yet to control Ukrainian airspace despite having a larger air force. Ukraine is reportedly keeping its planes safe by moving them from one airbase to another.
eVTOLs would help protect overseas US airbases in a similar fashion. The flying vehicles would help in transportation from airbases which are under attack, or have been extensively damaged. eVTOLs would reportedly be cheaper, more fuel efficient, and easier to maintain than helicopters.

Another reason behind America's push to gain an advantage in the flying vehicle arena is its growing competition with China. The Pentagon has already been blamed for allowing Beijing to gain control of the commercial drone market. Frustrated with the services of Ola, a man in Maharashtra’s Parli Vaijanath tied his electric scooter to a donkey with a rope and paraded it around the town. The bizarre act was a mark of protest against its manufacturer for not fixing the fault in the two-wheeler after it stopped working just 15 days post delivery.
The man identified as Sachin Gitte, tied a donkey to the “faulty” e-scooter and paraded it around Beed with posters and banners urging people not to trust the company.

As per the reports, the owner of the Ola S1 Pro, burned the scooter because he was unhappy with its performance and range of the scooter. The reports further say that he received the electric scooter three months prior to the incident and has faced issues with the scooter.
The whole incident fueled frustration and anger and Prithviraj poured petrol over the e-bike and set it on fire.

EV fire latest news : With increasing incidents of electric two-wheelers catching fire, Union minister Nitin Gadkari said the government will issue necessary orders on defaulting companies after receiving the report of an expert panel that has been formed to enquire into the matter.
In a series of tweets, Gadkari said several mishaps involving electric two-wheelers have come to light in the last two months.
"We have constituted an expert committee to enquire into these incidents and make recommendations on remedial steps.
"Based on the reports, we will issue necessary orders on the defaulting companies," the road transport and highways minister said.
Gadkari added: "We will soon issue quality-centric guidelines for Electric Vehicles." The minister asserted that if any company is found negligent in its processes, a heavy penalty will be imposed and a recall of all defective vehicles will also be ordered.
Meanwhile, companies may take advance action to recall all defective batches of vehicles immediately, Gadkari tweeted. "Under the leadership of PM Shri @narendramodi ji, our government is committed to ensure safety of each and every commuter," he tweeted.

<h3>Road tax on vehicles to make EVs more lucrative</h3>
The proposal for raising road tax on specific categories of vehicles has been forwarded by the transport department to the finance department.
Depending on the vehicle's fuel variant and price band, road tax in Delhi varies between 4% and 12.5% on individually owned private cars.
The road tax on private vehicles in Delhi is presently up to 12.5 per cent depending on fuel type and price range.
<h3>No tax for&nbsp;Electric Vehicles</h3>
Under the&nbsp;Delhi Electric Vehicles Policy, which was announced in 2020, EVs &mdash; both two-wheeled and four-wheeled &mdash; are exempted from paying any road tax.
