1. Running the AC at a minimum temperature doesn&rsquo;t ensure better cooling. So, set the temperature at 24 degrees or higher to save energy and cut the electricity bills.
2. When the AC is not in use, turn off the power switch. While most people prefer turning off the system using a remote, it is not ideal as electricity is wasted when the compressor is set to idle load.&nbsp;
3. Similar to other electrical appliances, air conditioning systems also need servicing. Thus, you should get your AC serviced at least twice a year for better maintenance.&nbsp;
4. To prevent overusing the AC, use the timer. Set it to turn off the cooling after four or five hours so you can sleep comfortably without compromising your energy bills.&nbsp;

As India braces itself for a scorching summer ahead, power prices are on the rise on exchanges, signalling potential challenges in meeting the escalating energy demand.
In response to the soaring temperatures forecasted by the Indian Meteorological Department, with maximum and minimum temperatures expected to surpass normal levels, the nation is preparing for a surge in power consumption. The IMD predicts that peak power demand may hit 260 GW this summer, exceeding the previous record of 243 GW established last year.
Recent data from the Indian Energy Exchange reveals a noticeable uptick in power prices. On April 2nd, the market clearing price in the day-ahead market segment soared to ₹4.6 per unit, marking a significant increase from ₹3.5 per unit just a week prior. This surge in prices correlates with a spike in energy demand, which reached 4,722 million units on April 2nd, reflecting a 10.8% increase compared to the previous month, as per Mint.
To address concerns of potential power shortages, the government has announced proactive measures. The Ministry of Power disclosed plans to mandate power plants utilizing imported coal to operate at full capacity until September, extending the current mandate beyond its initial expiration in June, reported Mint. Additionally, similar mandates are being considered for gas-based power plants to ensure uninterrupted power supply throughout the summer months.

As temperatures soar, India's electricity demand touches a record-high of 2,15,882 MW on 18th April, which is 2% higher than last summer's demand of 2,11,856 MW that was met on 10th June 2022

India's electricity demand has touched a record-high of 2,15,882 MW on 18th April, said Grid Controller of India Ltd. As per the report, the rise in demand is due to soaring temperatures across the country and high manufacturing capacity utilisation.
The data showed that the demand on 18th April 2023 was 2% higher than last summer's demand of 2,11,856 MW which was met on June 10, 2022. Likewise, this year's demand is 4% higher than the demand met in April last year.
As per Financial Times, the maximum electricity demand met in April 2022 was 2,07,111 MW (207 GW) with a peak shortage of 8,120 MW on April 29, 2022. As per the daily reports of Grid India, there was a peak shortage of 2,021 MW, despite meeting the demand of 2,15,882 MW. Hence the actual demand for power on 18th April was 2,17,903 MW.&nbsp;
As per the Ministry of Power, for the current year the peak demand is expected to be around 2,29,000 MW during the summer. The months of April and May of 2023 is projected as high-demand period.
According to Central Electricity Authority&rsquo;s daily coal data update, out of the 180 thermal plants across the country, 47 plants have coal stocks that are at critical levels, as on April 17.
The gvernment has also taken several steps such as ensuring availability of the generation capacity, coordination with ministries of coal and railways to increase production and dispatch of coal, and directions to gencos to import coal to fill any supply gap to meet the increased demand for power.

The scheduled screening of the banned BBC documentary in Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University was disrupted after power was knocked out and internet services were halted by varsity's administration, as per an NDTV report.&nbsp;
The screening was reportedly planned at the Students' Union office at 9 pm on Tuesday dispite the disapproval from the authorities, the report said.&nbsp;
It further said, the JNU administration had warned of disciplinary action against students if the documentary was screened.

In Bangladesh, most schools are closed on Fridays, but now will also close on Saturdays, Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam said Monday.
He said government offices and banks will cut their workdays to seven hours from the previous eight hours, but private offices will be allowed to set their own schedules.
Supply disruptions caused by the Ukraine war have led to soaring world prices for energy and food.
Bangladesh has been taking measures in recent weeks to ease pressure on its declining foreign currency reserves. Last month, fuel prices were raised by more than 50%.
The government says it is exploring options to get cheaper fuel from Russia under a special arrangement.
The decision has drawn criticism, but the government said it is necessary to cut losses amid rising international fuel prices.

The country's opposition has accused the government of failing to control corruption and eliminate losses in the energy sector.
In July, Bangladesh sought an unspecified loan from the International Monetary Fund, becoming the third country in South Asia to do so recently after Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
Rahul Anand, division chief in the IMF's Asia and Pacific Department, said in a recent consultation that Bangladesh was not in a crisis situation and its external position was &ldquo;very different from several countries in the region.&rdquo; &ldquo;Bangladesh has a low risk of debt distress and is very different from Sri Lanka,&rdquo; he was quoted as saying by the Dhaka-based The Business Standard Daily.
Bangladesh's foreign currency reserves have dwindled to around $40 billion.

Amid a deepening crisis in coal shortage, the Delhi government  warned of a possible setback in providing uninterrupted electricity supply to important establishments in the capital, including Metro trains and hospitals.
Power Minister Satyendar Jain held an emergency meeting to assess the situation and wrote to the Centre requesting it to ensure adequate coal availability to power plants that supply electricity to the national capital.
"Due to disruption of power supply from Dadri-II and Unchahar power stations, there may be a problem in 24-hours power supply to many essential institutions, including Delhi Metro and Delhi government hospitals," a government statement read.
Presently, 25-30 per cent of the electricity demand in Delhi is being met through these power stations, and they face a shortage of coal, Jain said.
He said the government was monitoring the situation closely and making every possible effort to ensure that people did not face power outages in some areas of the capital.
"These power stations play an important role in preventing blackouts in some parts of Delhi and are also essential to ensure the continuous supply of electricity to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, hospitals and people in the upcoming summer season," the minister said.
National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC)'s Dadri-II and Jhajjar (Aravali) were established primarily to meet the power requirement in Delhi. However, there is very little stock of coal left even in these power plants, the statement further said.
The Dadri-II, Unchahar, Kahalgaon, Farakka and Jhajjar power plants supply 1,751 megawatt (MW) of electricity per day to Delhi. The capital gets the maximum supply of 728 MW from Dadri-II power station, while it receives 100 MW from the Unchahar station.
According to the daily coal report of the National Power Portal, all these power plants face an acute shortage of coal.
This, coupled with sweltering summer, has triggered blackouts across many parts of the country as states struggle to manage the record demand for electricity.
Besides measures to increase coal supplies to power plants, the Union government has asked states to step up its imports for the next three years to build up inventories.

The Delhi Chief Minister made 4 guarantees- first, 300 units of free electricity per month for every Goan household which will result in 87% of the state receiving zero electricity bills. Second, a &lsquo;clean slate&rsquo; or a promise to waive off all old or pending electricity bills. Third, an uninterrupted 24/7 power supply. And fourth, free electricity to the farmers.
Kejriwal has made similar promises for subsidised electricity to voters in Uttarakhand and Punjab, two more states which will go to polls next year.

300 units of free electricity to every household in Goa- Kejriwal&nbsp;is taking a leaf out of his own book with electoral promises that helped AAP&nbsp;win big in Delhi.&nbsp;

On a 2-day visit to Goa, Aam Aadmi Party National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal sounded the poll bugle in the state with electoral promises in the power sector, similar to those that helped him win the 2014 Delhi Assembly elections.&nbsp;
The Delhi Chief Minister made 4 guarantees- first, 300 units of free electricity per month for every Goan household which will result in 87% of the state receiving zero electricity bills. Second, a &lsquo;clean slate&rsquo; or a promise to waive off all old or pending electricity bills. Third, an uninterrupted 24/7 power supply. And fourth, free electricity to the farmers.
Kejriwal has made similar promises for subsidised electricity to voters in Uttarakhand and Punjab, two more states which will go to polls next year.

Filmmaker and actor Pooja Bhatt has highlighted how the parts of Maharashtra have 'plunged into darkness' due to no electricity supply and said that she is speaking on behalf of 'countless people who have no voice'.
She called out the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Corporation (MSEDCL) on Twitter for their 'substandard service' and 'zero accountability'.
In a series of tweets, the 'Bombay Begums' star wrote, 'How do you expect people to cope through a pandemic with no electricity for 56 hrs?'.
Bhatt pointed out that the Cyclone Tauktae has come and gone but still the service provider has failed to resume the services in Khalapur, Kalote Mokashi, and Vasai/Virar.
Meanwhile, MSEDCL was quick to reply on Pooja Bhatt's tweet and said their team is working to figure out a solution as soon as possible.
