The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light to allow up to 100% foreign direct investment (FDI) in select activities within the space sector.
This decision marks a pivotal shift from the previous policy, which mandated government approval for any FDI in satellite establishment and operation. The new policy aligns with the Indian Space Policy 2023 and aims to foster a more liberalized approach towards foreign investment in the space domain.
Under the revised FDI framework, the space sector has been delineated into three distinct categories. Firstly, activities such as satellite manufacturing and operation, satellite data products, as well as ground and user segments will now permit up to 74% FDI via the automatic route, with government approval required for investments beyond this threshold.
Secondly, FDI of up to 49% will be permissible through the automatic route for endeavors related to launch vehicles, associated systems or subsystems, and the establishment of spaceports. Again, any investments exceeding this limit will necessitate government clearance.
Thirdly, in a move aimed at stimulating indigenous manufacturing capabilities, the government has paved the way for up to 100% FDI in the manufacturing of components and systems/sub-systems for satellites, ground, and user segments, with approvals granted automatically.
According to government statements, this decision follows extensive consultations with key stakeholders including IN-SPACe, ISRO, NSIL, and various industrial entities. The move is expected to attract significant investment, enabling Non-Government Entities to enhance their technological prowess, scale operations globally, and capture a larger share of the global space economy, reported CNBC TV18

FDI equity inflows in April-September plummet by 24%, totaling $20.4 billion year-on-year. This decline encompasses various sectors, notably services, computer software, and hardware, with significant drops observed in these segments.
Services, including finance and business outsourcing, experienced a dip from $4.1 billion to $3.8 billion in Apr-Sep this year. Inflows into computer software and hardware drastically reduced to $920 million from $3.2 billion, while trading fell to $525 million from $4.7 billion.

After a surge in FY 2021-22, reaching $58 billion, FY 23 saw a decline in overseas equity investments, dropping back to $46 billion, reminiscent of previous years' levels.
Singapore emerged as the primary source for FDI in the April-September period, accounting for around $5.2 billion, followed by Mauritius at $2.9 billion, Japan at $2.09 billion, and the US at $2.05 billion.

Yahoo has shut down its news websites in India due the new foreign direct investment (FDI) rules that limit foreign ownership of media companies that operate and publish digital content in India.
This includes Yahoo News, Yahoo Cricket, Finance, Entertainment and MAKERS India. This, however, will not affect users' Yahoo e-mail, and search experiences in India.
"As of August 26th, 2021 Yahoo India will no longer be publishing content. Your Yahoo Account, Mail and Search experiences will not be affected in any way and will operate as usual. We thank you for your support and readership," a notice on the Yahoo website said.
US tech major Verizon had acquired Yahoo in 2017.
In the FAQ section, Yahoo said effective August 26, 2021, the company has ceased publication of content in India and has shut down Yahoo's content operations in the country.
"We did not come to this decision lightly. However, Yahoo India has been impacted by changes to regulatory laws in India that now limit the foreign ownership of media companies that operate and publish digital content in India. Yahoo has had a long association with India and we're really proud of the premium, local content we have provided our users here for the last 20 years," it said.
It added that given that Yahoo Cricket has a 'news' component, "it was impacted under the new FDI regulations that limit foreign ownership of media companies that operate and publish digital content in India in the 'News and Current Affairs' space".
Thanking all its users in India for the "support and trust" over the past two decades, it noted that it remains "open to opportunities that connect us to users here".
As per the new FDI regulations that will come into effect in October, digital media companies in India can accept up to 26 per cent investment in the form of foreign investment, subject to approval from the central government.
"In case you are a Yahoo Mail user, this change does not affect you in any way. This development does not impact our products Yahoo Mail and Yahoo Search, where we will continue to serve users in India as before, without any change," it said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Govt allows 74% FDI via automatic route in defence sector

The government has permitted foreign direct investment of up to 74% under the automatic route in the defence sector.
However, foreign investments in the defence sector would be subject to scrutiny on the grounds of national security, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade said in the note.
As per the current FDI policy, 100% overseas investments are permitted in the defence industry -- 49% under the automatic route, while beyond that government approval was required.
