The Indian men's team suffered a heartbreaking 0-3 defeat in the shootout to nemesis Australia after holding its mighty opponents to a 2-2 draw in the regulation time of the FIH Pro League match here on Saturday.
Australia also earned a bonus point for the win.
In their fourth shootout of the season, India failed to score a goal while Australia struck all three as Johan Durst enjoyed a memorable night at the Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium.

Skipper Harmanpreet Singh (20th minute) and Amit Rohidas (29th minute) scored for the home team, while Govers Blake and Tom (53rd minute) found the target for the visiting Australian side in regulation time.
In the shootout, Tim Brand, Ogilvie and Tom Wickham scored for Australia, but Akashdeep Singh, Sukhjeet Singh and Lalit Kumar Upadhyay missed their attempts for India.
This was India's second shootout defeat in a draw even though they added a pointb to their tally for holding their opponents to a 2-2 draw in regulation time.
"I think we played well overall. Australia are a good team and we gave our best right till the end. Compared to the last match, we were much better in defence," India captain Harmanpreet said after the match.
In search of an equaliser after trailing 1-2, Australia launched into a wave of attacks, but the Indian defence was equal to the task, with veteran goalkeeper S Sreejesh pulling off a brilliant save with a few minutes left for the final hooter.
However, Tom found Australia's much-needed equaliser with a field goal to send the match into the shootout, where India came a cropper.
The home team failed to convert a single penalty, while Australia scored all three, earning a bonus point for the win.
Australia had won all five of their matches in the Odisha leg of the league so far.
The Indians had squandered a two-goal lead to lose 4-6 to the Kookaburras earlier this month in Bhubaneswar.
Harmanpreet and Co will be back in action on Sunday to end the Odisha leg with a match against Ireland.&nbsp;

World no.1 Netherlands broke the deadlock through Floris Middendorp (4th minute) before vice-captain Hardik Singh (38th) equalised for India, who are ranked fourth.
In the shootout, Araijeet Singh Hundal and Lalit Kumar Upadhyay scored for India, while Sukhjeet Singh and Shamsher Singh missed from the one-on-one situation.
The win gave the Netherlands two points, while India pocketed one point.
India applied early pressure on the Dutch with some threatening circle penetrations but failed to yield any positive results.
The Netherlands, in turn, took the lead from their first circle entry in the fourth minute through Middendorp, who scored his first international career goal.
Middendorp scored from a rebound after India goalkeeper Krishan Bahadur Pathak saved Koen Bijen's initial try from an acute angle.

The final quarter was a hard fourth battle between the two sides as they penetrated each other's circles several times but the final touch eluded them.
The Netherlands then secured a penalty corner but India's first rusher Manpreet Singh's brave defending denied the Dutch.

Experienced goalkeeper PR Sreejesh&rsquo;s heroics saw India pull off a thrilling 8-7 shootout win against Spain in their fifth match of the FIH Hockey Pro League here on Monday.
Sreejesh made one save in the shootout, while Harmanpreet Singh, Sukhjeet Singh, Lalit Upadhyay, Abhishek and Raj Kumar Pal converted their chances to help India bag a bonus point.
Jarmanpreet Singh (1st minute) and Abhishek (35th) scored a goal each for India, while Jose Basterra (3rd) and Borja Lacalle (15th) were on the scoresheet for Spain in regulation time.
India started the game on aggressive note as Jarmanpreet Singh scored an excellent field goal in the first minute from an acute angle.
Spain responded well after going down and started playing a fast counter-attack game, which helped them earn a PC. Spain equalized as Jose Basterra found the back of the net.
India kept constant pressure on Spain&rsquo;s defenders. Akashdeep earned a PC soon but Harmanpreet Singh&rsquo;s shot went wide.
With just seconds remaining in the end of the first quarter, Spain took the lead as Borja Lacalle found the back of the net after receiving a pass from captain Marc Miralles from the right flank.
India made an aggressive start in the opening minutes of second quarter. India enjoyed greater possession of the ball but Spain defence stood tall, not allowing the Indian forwards to equalize. Going into the half-time, Spain led India 2-1.
With India trying to find ways to bounce back, the third quarter was entertaining with both teams displaying quick-fire hockey and both stepping up the ante in attack.
India earned a PC on which they capitalized as Abhishek reacted quickly and fired the ball in the back of the net to make the score 2-2. At the end of the third quarter, the score was tied at 2-2.
With 15 minutes left on the clock, India started mounting pressure on Spain. With constant attacking moves, India earned a PC with six minutes remaining, but failed to convert as Amit Rohidas' shot was blocked well by the Spain goalkeeper.
Sreejesh made some superb saves in the last five minutes of the game as Spain gave their all, but couldn&rsquo;t find the back of the net, ending the regulation time in a 2-2 scoreline.

The regulation period ended in a 1-1 stalemate with India scoring in the 19th minute through young drag-flicker Deepika Kumari and the US equalising through Ashley Seesa in the 45th minute.
Mumtaz Khan and Sonika were on target in the shootout, while Leah Crouse scored for the losing team.
Despite the win, the Indian chief coach, Janneke Schopman, would be unhappy with the way the Savita Punia-led side dominated for most part and still could not win the contest in regulation time despite earning several penalty corners.
The win on Sunday came after India had thrashed the US 3-1 in the Bhubaneswar leg of the Pro League. The victory would have soothed the nerves of the 20,000-odd crowd at the stadium, who saw US score the equaliser in the dying minutes of the third quarter.

India found themselves under pressure early in the first quarter as Australia was awarded a penalty corner in the third minute.
However, the Indian captain and goalkeeper Savita Punia did well to keep the ball out.
A few minutes later Jane Claxton took a shot at goal but it went on to hit the goalpost. The first quarter was plenty of action but ended without any goals being scored.
The second quarter started with India being awarded a penalty corner early on but it wasn&rsquo;t converted. The Aussies won their second penalty corner in the 20th minute but failed to convert it.
Both the teams made plenty of circle entries but the first-half ended goalless.
India brought a whole new level of intensity to their game in the third quarter and were justly rewarded with a goal as they broke the deadlock courtesy a stunning goal from Katariya who dived to put the ball into the back of the net off a penalty corner.
Sangita Kumari, who was playing her 50th international match, won India yet another penalty corner but it wasn&rsquo;t converted. The Indians were well in control of the third quarter as it ended 1-0 in favour of the home team.
Australia started the final quarter with a penalty corner but it was kept out.
Navneet won India another penalty corner in the 52nd minute but it didn&rsquo;t get past the Australian defence.
India continued to play a tight defence.
The Australians were awarded a penalty corner with just over a minute left to try and take the game into a penalty shootout but India successfully reviewed the decision to have it overturned.
Another penalty corner was awarded to Australia with just about half a minute left but it was a botched attempt as India went on to win their second game of the tournament.

Skipper Harmanpreet Singh's brace went in vain as the Indian men's hockey team conceded three goals in the final quarter to lose 4-6 to Australia in a FIH Pro League match on Thursday.
It was Australia who started and finished the match in style with the Indians dominating in the middle period.
Harmanpreet (12th, 20th minutes) converted two penalty corners, while Sukhjeet Singh (18th) and Mandeep Singh (29th) were the other goal-getters for India.
Blake Govers struck twice for Australia in the second minute besides Aran Zalewski (40th), Lachlan Sharp (52nd), Jacon Anderson (55th) and Jack Welch (58th). The Kookaburras took India for a surprise at the start of the match with Govers handing the visitors a 2-0 lead in the second minute.
He first scored from Australia's first penalty corner past India custodian Krishan Bahadur Pathak and then doubled his side's lead with an unstoppable shot past the goalkeeper.
It was full press from the Kookaburras in the first 10 minutes as they secured another penalty corner soon but the Indians defended stoutly.
It was relentless pressure from Australia and it took a save from Pathak to deny Welch from a penalty corner.
In the 12th minute, India secured their first penalty corner and Harmanpreet made no mistake, firing in with a rocket flick which Australia goalkeeper Andrew Charter had no answer to.
India grew in confidence with the goal and started to dominate the proceedings and minutes later Abhishek's shot from Sukhjeet's feed was saved by Charter.
The hosts continued their attacking game and secured their second penalty corner soon but it was wasted.
Sukhjeet levelled the scores for India in the 18th minute, putting in a wobbly ball from Abhishek.
Two minutes later, Harmanpreet gave India the lead by converting another penalty corner and then a minute from half-time Mandeep scored with a bullet shot from the top of the D after receiving a defence splitting 45-degree ball from his skipper.
Trailing by two goals, Australia pressed hard after the change of ends and earned a couple of penalty corners and from one such chance, Zalewski deflected in Govers' flick.
The fourth and final quarter completely belonged to Australia as they pumped in three more goals through Sharp, Anderson and Welch to pocket three points from the game.
India will next play Ireland on Friday.
