The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has ordered Food Business Operators (FBOs) and e-commerce platforms to remove claims regarding 'A1' and 'A2' types of milk and milk products from product packaging. The food safety regulator has given businesses a six-month window to comply with this directive. Why Stop A1, A2 Labeling? In its order, the FSSAI stated that the differentiation between A1 and A2 milk stems from the structural variance in beta-casein proteins. However, it noted that the current regulations in India do not recognize this differentiation. Order to Brands, E-Commerce Companies Now that the FSSAI has clarified that Indian regulations do not recognize the A1 and A2 differentiation for milk and milk products, the regulator has instructed both food business operators (FBOs) and e-commerce platforms to remove such claims from their products and packaging.The regulator has given FBOs and e-commerce platforms six months to exhaust pre-printed packaging for these products. The regulator has stated that there will be no extension to this deadline. A1 Versus A2 Milk: The DifferenceAs the Indian food safety regulator noted, the A1 versus A2 differentiation in milk and milk products is based on the structural variance in beta-casein proteins in cow milk. A2 milk mostly lacks the form of beta-casein proteins called A1 and instead predominantly contains the A2 form. A1 Versus A2: The Debate New Zealand-based The a2 Milk Company Limited, one of the biggest A2 milk brands across the globe, claims that milk containing A1 proteins is harmful. However, this claim was rejected by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in 2009. In its review, the EFSA found there was insufficient evidence to prove that bioactive peptides in standard milk have a negative effect on health. Brands Selling A2 Milk in India In India, Amul is the biggest brand selling A2 milk. While Amul offers a cow milk variant with A2 labeling, it also sells buffalo A2 milk. Apart from Amul, there are several new direct-to-consumer (D2C) dairy brands selling A2 milk. Some of the key names in this list include Country Delight, Humpy Farms, Captain Farm, and Provilac.

Summer is the time when many of us stack our refrigerators with packaged fruit juices. However, we don't understand how unhealthy they are and what harm they may cause us. Even though many of these juice companies claim to be '100%' fruit juices, they are actually not.
<h3>FSSAI orders packaged fruit juices to remove '100%' claim</h3>
Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has asked all packaged fruit juices available in the market which claim to be 100% fruit juices, to immediately remove the 100% claim from their labels and advertisements.
<h3>FSSAI asks food companies to phase out existing pre-printed packaging materials&nbsp;</h3>
FSSAI has also directed all food companies to phase out their existing pre-printed packaging materials before September 1, 2024. Let us tell you that these packaged juices contain only water as the main ingredient and bare minimum quantity of their primary ingredient that&rsquo;s fruit or its pulp.
Making juice by adding water is called reconstituted, hence the label of these juices should say reconstituted instead of 100% fruit juice.
Whereas if the nutritive sweeteners in the juice are more than 15gm/kg, then 'Sweetened Juice' should also be written on the label of the product. Apart from this, FSSAI says that as per the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulation 2018, there is no provision for making '100%' claim.
<h3>Why are packaged juices harmful?</h3>
High Sugar Content: Packaged juices contain added sugars, which can contribute to obesity, diabetes, and other metabolic disorders. Even those labeled as '100% juice' are high in natural sugars, which impact blood sugar levels and overall caloric intake.
Lack of Fiber: Unlike whole fruits, packaged juices typically lack dietary fiber, which is essential for digestion and maintaining stable blood sugar levels.&nbsp;
Preservatives and Additives: To extend shelf life and enhance flavour, most packaged juices contain preservatives and artificial additives that have negative health effects, including allergies, liver issues and weight gain.
Nutrient Loss: The process of making packaged juice often involves pasteurization, which destroys vitamins and antioxidants found in fresh fruits.&nbsp;
Empty Calories: Drinking packaged juice can lead to the consumption of empty calories which means calories that provide little to no nutritional benefit. This can contribute to weight gain and nutritional deficiencies.
Dental Health: The high sugar and acid content in packaged juices can erode tooth enamel, leading to dental cavities and other oral health issues.

Many of us get confused with an 'expiry date' and 'best before date'. Let us know what is the difference between the two.
<h3>What is expiry date?</h3>
While buying any food product, it is essential that you read labels and know the ingredients and nutritional value. Certain foods become more susceptible to bacterial growth over time, while others taste fine after their 'best before date.'
Explaining what 'Expiry date' means, FSSAI said, &ldquo;If the expiry date is June 30, 2020, then after this date, the food item is unsafe to use and can be harmful to you. Never consume food whose expiry date has passed, as it may be unsafe to eat and may cause health hazards."

<h3>What is 'best before date'?</h3>
&ldquo;While buying food products, always check the date of manufacture, best before date, and expiry date,&rdquo; says a video posted by the FSSAI on X.
The video further explains that the date of manufacture indicates when the product was made and packaged. The best-before date signifies the period during which the food is in its optimal condition for consumption.
&ldquo;After the best-before date, the food product may lose its taste, freshness, aroma, or nutrients. It does not necessarily mean that the food is no longer safe to eat,&rdquo; explains the FSSAI.

After The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India warned consumers from eating moong & masoor daals regularly, as they contain Glyphosate, a press release by FSSAI now states that 'imported pulses and beans are safe'. Tests were conducted in the past month to show that only 7 out 319 consignments tested had glyphosate. These were within the prescribed Maximum Residue Levels. The food safety regulator will continue to monitor imported pulses for some time.

Recent studies conducted by the national food safety authorities show that pulses imported from Canada and Australia, into India are masked with toxins.
