Amid languishing sales, Clothing retailer GAP is eliminating 500 corporate jobs in San Francisco and New York.
The news of job cuts, confirmed by a company spokesperson. The Wall Street Journal reported  news of Gap's layoffs on Tuesday.
According to Gap latest annual report, the company had a workforce of roughly 97,000 employees; 9% of them or roughly 8,700, work in corporate sites.
In August, Gap's executive chairman Bob Martin, who is also the interim CEO of Gap Inc. told that the company plans to reduce operating costs to increase profitability.
Clothing retailer reported an 8% dip in net sales.

As the global clothing brand, GAP struggles with the ongoing weak financial performance, the brand has decided to eliminate roughly 500 jobs. According to reports, these jobs cover a variety of departments and are mostly located at Gap&rsquo;s offices in San Francisco and New York and Asia. News of the layoffs comes a few months after the Gap reported weak first-quarter earnings, with sales sliding at its flagship brand and its more popular Old Navy chain. The shares of the San Francisco-based company are down more than 40% so far this year. As the company struggles to get sales back on track, Gap is also still looking for a new leader after CEO Sonia Syngal abruptly stepped down in July after about two years on the job.
News of the layoffs comes a few months after the Gap reported weak first quarter earnings, with sales sliding at its flagship brand and its more popular Old Navy chain.

Sonia Syngal was head of Old Navy, which generates more than half of the company&rsquo;s revenue before taking on the CEO post.&nbsp; The apparel retailer said its executive chairman Bob Martin, a former Walmart Inc executive, would serve as interim CEO effective immediately while it searches for a permanent replacement.
