In a shocking incident, a far-right anti-Islam activist Michael St&uuml;rzenberger, 59, was stabbed multiple times by an assailant while he was preparing to address a small political rally of Citizens' Movement Pax Europa or BPE in Germany's Mannheim.
The assailant dressed in a black hooded jacket tackled Michael to the ground and swung the knife at him while the onlookers were left terrified and panicked.
As the other BPE members jumped to save Michael from the attacker, the attacker climbed on top of the victim's blood-drenched body and stabbed him a second time. The police immediately rushed to the spot, however, the attacker already had injured two people.
While one of the policemen tried to stop the knifemen, he failed to gain control over the weapon. The suspect then stabbed the policeman leaving him injured. Listening to the frantic cry of the injured cop, the other policeman warned the attacker to pull back.
After the attacker did not respond to the warnings, the officer shot him at close range.
The entire incident was streamed online on the BPE's YouTube channel. The video was later removed from the page.&nbsp;
Mannheim police in a statement confirmed the incident saying multiple people, including a policeman, were injured. The attacker was also injured.

Nuremberg&rsquo;s department for heritage conservation explained that the remains were found during an archaeological survey prior to the construction of new residential buildings.
The mass graves mean &ldquo;a large number of dead people who needed to be buried in a short time frame without regard to Christian burial practices,&rdquo; Melanie Langbein of the department said.
A representative of the excavation company Terra Veritas said that the number of remains may cross 2000. This would make it the largest mass grave in Europe, as per CNN.
Langbein said the plague that may have killed the people buried in the mass grave was made worse because of the Thirty Years War, a phase that saw intense fighting in Europe.

German lawmakers on Friday approved a government plan to liberalise rules on cannabis, paving the way for the country to decriminalise limited amounts of marijuana and allow members of &ldquo;cannabis clubs&rdquo; to buy it for recreational purposes.
Parliament's lower house, or Bundestag, backed the legislation, a prominent reform project of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's socially liberal governing coalition, by 407 votes to 226. There were four abstentions.
Health Minister Karl Lauterbach said the government's aim is to &ldquo;fight the black market&rdquo; and better protect young people. He said current laws in the European Union's most populous nation have failed, with consumption rising and increasing problems with contaminated or overly concentrated cannabis.
&ldquo;Whatever we do, we can't carry on like this,&rdquo; he told lawmakers. &ldquo;You can stick your head in the sand...but we won't solve a single problem that way.&rdquo; Lauterbach, who noted that he himself long opposed legalising cannabis, argued that addiction researchers say removing the taboo around marijuana and giving information on its risks is the right approach.
The bill foresees legalising possession by adults of up to 25 grams (nearly 1 ounce) of marijuana for recreational purposes and allowing individuals to grow up to three plants on their own. That part of the legislation is supposed to take effect on April 1.
German residents who are 18 and older would be allowed to join nonprofit &ldquo;cannabis clubs&rdquo; with a maximum 500 members each, starting July 1. The clubs would be allowed to grow cannabis for members' personal consumption.
Individuals would be allowed to buy up to 25 grams per day, or a maximum 50 grams per month &mdash; a figure limited to 30 grams for under-21s. Membership in multiple clubs would not be allowed. The clubs' costs would be covered by membership fees, which would be staggered according to how much marijuana members use.
The government plans a ban on advertising or sponsoring cannabis, and the clubs and consumption won't be allowed in the immediate vicinity of schools, playgrounds and sports facilities. An evaluation of the legislation's effect on protection of children and youths is to be carried out within 18 months of the legislation taking effect.
The main centre-right opposition bloc vehemently opposes the change.
&ldquo;You're asserting here in all seriousness as health minister...that we will curb consumption among children and young people with the legalisation of further drugs,&rdquo; conservative lawmaker Tino Sorge said to Lauterbach. &ldquo;That's the biggest nonsense I've ever heard.&rdquo; Lauterbach told reporters after the vote that &ldquo;dealers have no reason at all to celebrate.&rdquo; He noted that, under the new legislation, dealers who are caught selling to children or youths can expect to face a sentence of at least two years.
The plan falls significantly short of the government's original ambitions, which foresaw allowing the sale of cannabis to adults across the country at licensed outlets. The project was scaled back following talks with the European Union's executive commission.
Parliament's upper house, which represents Germany's 16 state governments, could in principle delay the legislation, though it doesn't formally require the chamber's approval. Bavaria's conservative state government has said it would examine whether legal action against the liberalisation plan is possible.
The legislation is one of several that Scholz's coalition, which has since become highly unpopular as a result of economic weakness and persistent infighting, pledged when it took office in 2021.
It has eased rules on gaining citizenship and ended restrictions on holding dual citizenship. Among other policies, it also plans to make it easier for transgender, intersex and nonbinary people to change their gender and name in official registers.

The weather has caused accidents and incidents across the region.

"We are on site with a large contingent of emergency services. We are currently assuming a static hostage situation," Hamburg police said on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The car remained parked in the apron area of the airport.
Police added later Saturday that they believed "that a custody dispute is the background to this operation".

The video, which was posted on social media on Tuesday and could not immediately be independently verified, shows a man in a T-shirt depicting a Nazi-era soldier and the words &ldquo;Wehrmacht wieder mit?&rdquo; on the back. The phrase is a play on words that roughly translates as &ldquo;Who's going to join again?&rdquo; The man is also wearing red, white and black shorts &mdash; colours that are usually associated with the German Reich &mdash; as he takes blue balloons from his car and hands them to excited children on the other side of a fence. The car bears the words &ldquo;volunteer deportation helper&rdquo; on the back, and one of the balloons in the car appears to have the swoosh logo of the anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany party. Blue is the party's signature colour.
The party's candidate won a run-off election Sunday for Sonneberg County commissioner. It was the first time Alternative for Germany, or AfD, has taken charge of the executive at a county level, prompting concerns about a rise in voter support for far-right ideology in a country still grappling with its Nazi past.

A bronze sword made more than 3,000 years ago that is so well-preserved it almost still shines has been unearthed in Germany, according to officials.
Bavaria's state office for the preservation of historical monuments says the sword, which is believed to date back to the end of the 14th century B.C., the middle of the Bronze Age was found during excavations last week in southern Germany.
It has a bronze octagonal hilt and comes from a grave in which three people&mdash;a man, a woman and a boy&mdash;were buried with bronze objects, the Bavarian office said in a statement this week.
It is not yet clear whether the three were related to each other and, if so, how.
"The sword and the burial still need to be examined so that our archaeologists can categorise this find more precisely," said the head of the office, Mathias Pfeil. "But we can already say that the state of preservation is extraordinary. A find like this is very rare."

Europe's largest economy Germany has contracted in the first quarter of 2023 compared with the previous three months. Data from Germany's Federal Statistical Office has shown that the country has entered recession.
The Gross Domestic Product of the country has fallen by 0.3% in the period from January to March. During the last quarter of 2022, the GDP slipped by 0.5%. This, after Germany faced an energy crisis due to the Russia-Ukraine war. Decline in two consecutive quarters makes it a technical recession.&nbsp;
As per Reuters, household consumption was down 1.2% quarter-on-quarter after price, seasonal and calendar adjustments. Government spending also decreased significantly by 4.9% on the quarter.&nbsp;
The federal statistics agency of Germany has revised the initial GDP figure from 0% to negative this quarter. The recession, however, was less severe than early predictions that were made at the start of the conflict. But the mild winter season and the easing of supply chain problems did not help much in preventing recession.
However, the investments in Germany was up in the last three months of the year, after a weak second half of 2022.

Parents of Indian kid in German child care deny sex abuse claim. Here's what they said

Parents of an Indian child in German child rights' custody landed in Mumbai on Thursday to meet Indian authorities in a bid to expedite the process of getting their daughter's custody from the German government.
Their three-year-old daughter has been in the custody of German authorities for the last one-and-a-half years.
At a press conference in Mumbai on Thursday, the girl's mother said, "In September 2021, our daughter was taken away by German child services. She accidentally hurt her private part and we took her to a doctor. The doctors sent us back saying that she was fine. Then we went for a follow-up check. My daughter was again said to be fine, but the doctors, this time, called child services and gave them my daughter's custody. And we later learned that because of the nature of her injury, they suspected sexual abuse."
"In the interest of clarification, we even gave our DNA samples. After the DNA test, police investigation, and medical reports, the case of sexual abuse was closed in February 2022. And in December 2021, an expert from the same hospital ruled out any suspicion of sexual abuse," she added.
The child's father said, "After all this, we thought that our girl would be back with us. But the German child services opened a case against us for the termination of custody. We went to court for that. The court ordered that we have to make a parental ability report. We got the 150-page parental ability test report after a year during which the psychologist spoke to us for only 12 hours."
"We got the next trial date after receiving the report. The report suggested the bond between the parents and the child is very strong and the child should return to the parents but the parents don't know how to bring up the child. For that, we should stay in a family house till the girl attains the age of 3 to 6 years. The girl of that age would be able to decide whether she wants to stay with her parents or in foster care," he added.
Her father said, "They reasoned that we let her eat as much as they want, let her play like she wants, and they don't discipline her enough. They also mentioned that the child has an attachment disorder. They alleged that the attachment disorder was because the child wanted to do things by herself."
"We asked them to let the child come to India since the court case was going to last long. They said that they cannot send her to India as she does not know any Indian language, which can result in trauma. We have been asking them to let us teach her at least one Indian language. A teacher, a volunteer or a mentor is also not needed. Our friends and family could easily do that. There were many Indians in Germany, who were ready to volunteer to teach her Hindi or Gujarati but they refused," he added.
He further stated, "Like many others, I was also laid off from the IT company that I worked for. I don't know how we are going to manage. We are already in INR 30-40 lakhs in debt."
The mother said, "We are allowed to meet the girl for an hour every month under the supervision of a social worker. She reported positively about our attachment with the girl. We demanded more visits but they refused saying that it could exhaust the girl. But in September 2022, we were allowed to meet her twice a month. But German child services are not following the court order as well. It was after the Indian government intervened in December 2022 that they started obeying the court order."
"We have been saying that she is an Indian baby, she must know an Indian language and acquire cultural knowledge. We also demanded consular access for her. Criminals also get consular access but our daughter is being treated worse than a criminal," she added.
"We want to bring her to India as we have not got a fair trial. There are cultural differences which are difficult to explain to the German authorities. We request PM Modi to help us bring her back to India. We also request Foreign minister S Jaishankar to look into this problem and help us bring our child back. Matters will be resolved if PM Modi takes matters into his hands," she added.
