July witnessed extreme heat, breaking temperature records worldwide, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the EU's Copernicus Earth observation program.
The surge in global temperatures is driven by the burning of fossil fuels, which contributes to the greenhouse effect, intensifying extreme weather events.
Guterres urged the international community to work together to limit global temperature rise to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels, thereby avoiding the worst consequences of climate change.&nbsp;

The UN's World Meteorological Organization said claimed that there are 66 percent chance that the annual surface temperature will surpass the 1.5C above the pre-industrial levels for at least one of the years 2013-2017, and the temperature will range between 1.1C to 1.8C in these five years.
The predictions toss the 2015 Paris goal of capping global warming at below two degrees Celsius above average levels measured between 1850 and 1900.
The hottest eight years ever recorded were between 2015 and 2022.
"There is 98 percent likelihood that at least one of the five years and the five-year period as a whole will be the warmest years on record," WMO said.
Now as it is evident that 2023-2027 will be the warmest years ever recorded the UN on Wednesday warned as greenhouse gases and El Nino will create a soaring temperature.
The WMO claimed that the increase in temperature will not be a permanent phenomenon and doesn't mean that we exceed the Paris benchmark. the 1.5C level remains for some time with increasing frequency.
 Since 1960 the global mean land and sea temperature has been increasing. However, the chances of temperature temporarily exceeding 1.5C above 1850-1990 have increased since 2015.
As there are 66 percent chances that the temperature will exceed 1.5C in one of the years between 2023-2027, now 32 percent chances are that the temperature will raise 1.5C entire 5 years duration.

"Glaciers are critical to all life on earth. Over centuries, they carved out the landmasses we call home. Today, they cover 10 per cent of our world. Glaciers are also the world's water towers," Guterres said in his remarks to an event on the International Year of Glaciers&rsquo; Preservation Wednesday.
Guterres voiced concern that human activity is driving the planet's temperature to dangerous new levels and "melting glaciers are the canary in the coalmine".
Antarctica is losing an average of 150 billion tons of ice mass every year while the Greenland ice cap is melting even faster &mdash; losing 270 billion tonnes per year.

Major droughts and pluvials - periods of excessive precipitation and water storage on land - have indeed been occurring more often, confirmed a new National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA)-led study.
Droughts and floods will become more frequent and severe as our planet warms and climate changes, scientists have predicted, but detecting this on regional and continental scales has proven difficult, the study said.
Two NASA, US, scientists examined 20 years of data from the NASA/German GRACE and GRACE-FO satellites to identify extreme wet and dry events, the study published in the journal Nature Water said.
Floods and droughts account for more than 20 per cent of the economic losses caused by extreme weather events in the US each year. The economic impacts are similar around the world, though the human toll tends to be most devastating in poor neighbourhoods and developing nations.
The scientists also found that the worldwide intensity of these extreme wet and dry events - a metric that combines extent, duration, and severity - is closely linked to global warming.
From 2015-2021 - seven of the nine warmest years in the modern record - the frequency of extreme wet and dry events was four per year, compared with three per year in the previous 13 years.
This makes sense, said the authors, because warmer air causes more moisture to evaporate from Earth's surface during dry events; warm air can also hold more moisture to fuel severe snowfall and rainfall events.
"The idea of climate change can be abstract. A couple of degrees warmer doesn't sound like much, but water cycle impacts are tangible," said Matt Rodell, study co-author at NASA.
"Global warming is going to cause more intense droughts and wet periods, which affects people, the economy, and agriculture around the world. Monitoring hydrological extremes is important for preparing for future events, mitigating their impacts, and adapting," said Rodell.

Rodell and study co-author Bailing Li studied 1,056 extreme wet and dry events from 2002 to 2021, as observed by the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and GRACE-Follow-On (GRACE-FO) satellites.
The satellites use precise measurements of Earth's gravity field to detect water storage anomalies - specifically, how the amount of water stored in soils, aquifers, lakes, rivers, snow cover, and ice compares to normal, the study said.
"It's like watching the level of the water in your bathtub.
"You can see how much it rises and falls without knowing the total amount of water in the tub," said Rodell.
Because GRACE and GRACE-FO provide a new map of water storage anomalies around the world every month, they provide a comprehensive view of the severity of hydrological events and how they evolve over time, the study said.
In their study, Rodell and Li applied an "intensity" metric that accounts for the severity, duration, and spatial extent of droughts and extreme wet events.
They found the global total intensity of extreme events increased from 2002 to 2021, mirroring Earth's rising temperatures over the same period.
According to the study, by far the most intense event identified in the study was a pluvial that began in 2019 in central Africa and is still ongoing.
It has caused the level of Lake Victoria to rise by more than one metre.
A 2015-2016 drought in Brazil was the most intense dry event of the past two decades, leading to empty reservoirs, and water rationing across some Brazilian cities, the study said.
"Both events were associated with climate variability, but the Brazilian drought occurred in the warmest year on record (2016), reflecting the impact of global warming," said Li.
"The recent southwestern US and southern Europe droughts were also some of the most intense events, in part, due to anthropogenic warming," said Li.
"Global warming has had broad and profound impacts on terrestrial water storage, such as reduction of annual snow in high elevations and depletion of groundwater by people when surface waters are scarce," Li added.
"Reflecting these changes, GRACE data provide us a unique perspective of how hydrological extremes have been changing around the world," said Li.&nbsp;

On February 16, the ocean surface covered by ice around the frozen continent shrank to 2.09 million square kilometres (nearly 800,000 square miles), the lowest level since satellite records began, according to figures provided to AFP by the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S).
"Antarctic sea ice reached its lowest extent in the 45-year satellite data record," said Samantha Burgess, Deputy Director of C3S.
US government scientists confirmed a new record last month but indicated an even lower figure of 1.79 million sq km, a difference Copernicus attributed to "different sea ice retrieval algorithms".
Sea ice concentrations during the southern hemisphere summer were well below average in all sectors of the Southern Ocean.

Startlingly, the record lows this year and in 2022 are about 30 percent below the 1981-2010 average.
"These low sea ice conditions may have important implications for the stability of Antarctic ice shelves and ultimately for global sea level rise," said Burgess.
"Polar ice caps are a sensitive indicator of the climate crisis."
Melting sea ice has no discernible impact on sea levels because the ice is already in ocean water.
But diminished ice cover is nonetheless a major concern because it helps accelerate global warming, including in the Arctic region.
About 90 percent of the Sun's energy that hits white sea ice is reflected back into space. But when sunlight hits dark, unfrozen ocean water, nearly the same amount of that energy is absorbed instead, contributing directly to global warming.

At COP26 in Glasgow, countries agreed to limit global heating to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels, a threshold set out in the 2015 Paris climate agreement, which would avoid the worst ravages of climate change. Even a fraction of a degree more can lead to many more lives lost. China, the United States, Europe and India have all failed to reduce their emissions enough to meet their Paris Agreement goals.
The inequality that led to and is propagated by climate change was at the forefront of COP27. Poorer nations, which have historically contributed the least to climate change, but bear the brunt of its most devastating consequences today, are seeking more reparations from rich countries, many of which have grown their economies and amassed wealth by burning fossil fuels.
The Indian contingent at COP27 was led by Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav, who also campaigned for a new fund for addressing loss and damage. India has launched the LiFE - Lifestyle for Environment movement, which encourages people the world over to live a lifestyle that is in tune with our planet and does not harm it.

Climate cooperation has also been harmed by the Ukraine-Russia war, which has thrown global markets in turmoil in addition to causing widespread damage and loss of life in Ukraine. It has led to a global energy crisis and driven up the price of food, fuel and fertilisers.
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the gathering virtually, stressing that there can be no global climate policy without peace.
The message from Climate scientists and experts is clear - time is running out, and fast. The goal of limiting temperature rise to 1.5C, in order to avoid large scale damage, may already be unreachable. At COP27, most agreed that if humanity is to save itself, drastic action is required, and required immediately.&nbsp;

The European region has on average seen temperatures rise 0.5 degrees Celsius each decade since 1991, the UN's World Meteorological Organization and the European Union&rsquo;s Copernicus Climate Change Service found in a joint report.
As a result, Alpine glaciers lost 30 metres (just under 100 feet) in ice thickness between 1997 and 2021, while the Greenland ice sheet is swiftly melting and contributing to accelerating sea level rise.
Last year, Greenland experienced melting and the first-ever recorded rainfall at its highest point.
And the report cautioned that regardless of future levels of global warming, temperatures would likely continue to rise across Europe at a rate exceeding global mean temperature changes.
"Europe presents a live picture of a warming world and reminds us that even well-prepared societies are not safe from impacts of extreme weather events," WMO chief Petteri Taalas said in a statement.
The new report, released ahead of the UN's 27th conference on climate set to open in Egypt on Sunday, examined the situation in Europe up to and including 2021.
It found that last year, high-impact weather and climate events -- mainly floods and storms -- led to hundreds of deaths, directly affected more than half a million people and caused economic damage across Europe exceeding $50 billion.

At the same time, the report highlighted some positives, including the success of many European countries in slashing greenhouse gas emissions.
Across the EU, such emissions decreased by nearly a third between 1990 and 2020, and the bloc has set a net 55-percent reduction target for 2030.
Europe is also one of the most advanced regions when it comes to cross-border cooperation towards climate change adaptation, the report said.
It also hailed Europe's world-leading deployment of early warning systems, providing protection for about 75 percent of the population, and said its heat-health action plans had saved many lives.

From The Conversation: Finally, after what was arguably the worst summer on record for glaciers, snow has begun to fall in the European Alps. It is much needed.
This year Switzerland&rsquo;s glaciers have lost an average of 6.2 per cent of their ice &ndash; extreme indeed.
The new flurries of snow will form a protective blanket to shield and reflect 90% of the sun&rsquo;s radiation back into the atmosphere and limits the warming and melting of the ice beneath.
When snow falls over the winter, and then subsequently doesn&rsquo;t melt over the summer, it adds to the mass of a glacier. Over a few similar years, gravity would take over and glaciers would start to advance downhill.
However over the past century, that has not been the case. The protective layers of snow have not been thick enough to offset the warming summer temperatures and on average glaciers around the world have been wasting away since the end of the little ice age in the mid-late 1800s.
Saharan sand and a huge heatwave Back to this summer. Across the Alps, the preceding winter had very limited snowfall and therefore glaciers were not well insulated against the forthcoming summer melt season.
Spring was particularly harsh as natural atmospheric weather patterns carried Saharan dust to Europe and blanketed the Alpine landscape. Since dust absorbs more solar energy than snow (which is white and therefore more reflective), the now orange-tinted snow melted faster than ever.
Then a major heatwave saw temperature records smashed across Europe, with parts of the UK reaching 40&deg;C for the first time. The Alps were not spared. For instance Zermatt, a famous car-free Swiss village in the shadow of the Matterhorn, recorded temperatures up to 33&deg;C despite being 1,620 meters above sea level.
Glaciers in particular took a beating. By July, the Alps looked like they normally look in September: snow free, with snow and ice-fed rivers flowing at their peak. This was not normal.
The last time glaciers had an extreme melt season was in 2003 when, again, temperatures were very high across Europe, and a heatwave killed at least 30,000 people (more than 14,000 in France alone). That calendar year, 3.8% of glacier ice melted across Switzerland.
This year, for the first time ever, Zermatt closed its summer skiing. Guides stopped leading high mountain expeditions as permafrost &ndash; the frozen ground that binds rocks together &ndash; was thawing and causing almost constant rockfalls. Mont Blanc was closed.
50 years of data We are able to put this in historical context thanks in part to work by the charitable organisation Alpine Glacier Project which was established in 1972 and, along with the University of Salford where I work, has led scientific expeditions to glaciers near Zermatt every summer for 50 years.
Scores of students have helped to observe the effect of our warming climate through chemically monitoring changes in meltwater, topographically surveying the landscape and by taking photos from the same position over the years. Over the project&rsquo;s five decades, Gorner Glacier and Findel Glacier have retreated 1,385 metres and 1,655 metres respectively.
In Switzerland these glacial meltwaters are used for hydropower. In fact, water falling on 93% of Switzerland ultimately passes through at least one electric power plant before even leaving the country. So one consequence is that melting glaciers help to compensate for low rainfall in times of drought, filling reservoirs to supply the nations energy supply.
You could argue that not all glaciers were equally affected by this summer&rsquo;s catastrophic retreat and ice loss. In part, this is true. The extent to which a glacier has melted does depend on the altitude at which it is located, how steep the glacier tongue is, and how heavily it is covered with debris. There may too be localised climate factors.
However, research just published has shown that Austrian glaciers have also lost more glacial ice in 2022 than they have in 70 years of observations and therefore it is quite clear that severe melt has been the norm in 2022.
Visiting and viewing the geography of high mountain environments is a breathtaking experience, but my fear is that the continued ice melt and extreme temperatures seen this year are not an anomaly. Many more glaciers could be lost entirely within a generation.

One of the most important glaciers of Iceland, Jakobshavn Isbrae is reportedly travelling much more slowly, and its trunk has even begun to thicken and lengthen. This is perhaps the most unexpected consequence of climate change. According to a new study, published in the Journal of Environmental Research Letter, climate change could affect fertility including longevity and child mortality.
The researchers claimed that human adaptation to climate change may include changes in fertility as people decide how much time and money they wish to devote in having children and invest in their future.
 

A new research claims that some of the biggest world heritage glaciers, such as the Grosser Aletschgletscher in the Swiss Alps, Khumbu Glacier in the Himalayas and Greenland's Jakobshavn Isbrae may get wiped out completely by 2100 if the current emission rates continue to soar.
According to the study, published in the Journal of Earth's Future, scientists have combined data to analyse the current state of World Heritage glaciers. The authors predict glacier extinction in 21 natural world heritage sites. Several iconic landscapes will be impacted by rising temperatures. The study states that conservation of these iconic endangered features could promote global efforts and climate mitigation benefits.

Experts have said that this is the first time icebergs of this proportion have broken off in such quick succession. The study finds that even if global emissions were to halt overnight, this increase is locked into the climate system by greenhouse gases already emitted and ocean heat storage. In addition, the pollution and acidification of oceans will pose a threat to the Arctic, and thawing permafrost may derail the global climate goals altogether. The members of the UN Environment assembly are currently working on setting environmental priorities for the coming years and committing to action.
