The India Meteorological Department has declared 'red alert' for the state till Tuesday.

All 80 people stuck at Pali waterfall in Goa's Sattari taluka were rescued on Sunday by the state's Fire and Emergency Services and the police, an official said.
These persons had got stranded after sudden increase in water upstream and the river that has to be crossed to reach the waterfall got swollen by afternoon amid heavy rains in the region through the weekend, the official said.
There was heavy rush of visitors at the site since it was a Sunday, he said.
"All 80 people have been rescued from Pali waterfall. No casualty has been reported. The rescue operation was carried out along with Goa Fire and Emergency Services," Superintendent of Police (North) Akshat Kaushal told PTI in the evening.
According to officials, the rescue operation began after people stranded there alerted Valpoi police station and sought help.
In another development, the state education department declared holiday for schools on Monday in view of the incessant rains.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has declared 'red alert' for the state till Tuesday.
"In view of incessant rains and alert issued by IMD, Goa centre predicting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, and keeping in mind safety of young children, it has been decided to declare holiday on Monday for all schools in the state," the circular issued by state education director Shailesh Zingade said.
"It is also clarified the holiday is for the students as well as teachers. However, teachers deputed for training shall report for training," the circular added.
The education department asked students to stay indoors and not venture into flooded streets, riversides and other such hazardous locations amid heavy rains.

"We found gold pieces weighing 2.23 kilograms, 5,000 antique coins, 307 copper coins of different dates cumulatively weighing 3.15 kilograms, 814 coins weighing 4.78 kilograms with inscriptions in Arabic, 786 copper coins with Queen Victoria written, household items like tumblers etc," Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant said.
He added said that the strongbox was opened just for the second time since Goa was liberated in 1961. It was first opened in 1991.&nbsp;
The Indian Express reported that the treasure included items from the reign of William IV of the British Empire, the Victorian era and &nbsp;King Joao VI of Portugal.&nbsp;
The Directorate of Accounts office was recently shifted from Panaji to the new 'Lekha Bhavan' in Porvorim and the strongbox was opened as it needed to be moved to the new structure, Sawant said.
"All the items were documented and kept back in the box. Some samples of these items would be displayed in the state museum," the CM told reporters.&nbsp;

Tension prevailed in a village near Margao town in Goa after some people installed a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, while another group took objection, leading to a police posse being stationed there to maintain peace, an official said on Monday.
The day marks the 394th birth anniversary of the Maratha emperor and events are held across the state to celebrate it.
The life-size statue was installed in Sao Jose De Areal village on Sunday, which led to a verbal altercation between two groups, the official said.
"The situation is under control and police personnel have been deployed in the village," Superintendent of Police (South) Sunita Sawant said.
Goa social welfare minister Subhash Phal Desai, who visited the village on Sunday, said the statue was installed on private land and all permissions from the local panchayat were obtained and the deputy collector was informed.
"No one must have any objection to the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Some political forces are instigating locals against the installation of the statue," he said.
Taking to X on Monday, local BJP leader Savio Rodrigues said, "As an Indian Christian I have the highest respect for the contribution of Chhatrapati Shivaji towards protecting our motherland. I am disappointed that some in Goa equate his sacrifices for our motherland as a point of contention to play their communal politics." Shivaji was a hardcore nationalist and every Indian must be inspired by him because of his immense valour and devotion to Bharat Mata, Rodrigues further said.

The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC), late last month, unanimously banned Gobi Manchurian stalls in Shree Bodgeshwar Zatra in Mapusa. They cited hygiene issues as the main cause. The concern stems from poor hygiene, the use of artificial colors, and the inclusion of powdered laundry detergent and questionable sauces.
A senior food safety officer (FSO) at the FDA said that sellers had been fined by the authorities for using low quality. &ldquo;They keep the quality sauce on display but use substandard ones for the preparation of gobi manchurian. They use some kind of powder in the flour and cornstarch in the batter so that after deep frying, the cauliflower florets remain crispy for a long time,&rdquo; the FDA officer told TOI.
According to the officer, this powder is a sort of reetha, used in washing clothes.
The Mapusa Municipal Council chairperson Priya Mishal further spoke about the ban and said, &ldquo;The councillors opined that such vendors operate in unhygienic conditions and use synthetic colours for making gobi Manchurian and that is what has prompted us to ban the sale of this dish.&rdquo;
Previously in 2022, the FDA had raided food stalls in Ponda, for unhygienic health conditions.
For the uninitiated, Gobi Manchurian is an Indian Chinese dish which originated in India. Manchurian is said to have been invented in 1975 by Nelson Wang, a cook at the Cricket Club of India in Mumbai

Stranger's video reveals Goa hotel manager drowned wife, arrested by police

A 29-year-old manager of a luxury hotel in South Goa was arrested on Saturday for allegedly drowning his wife at Cabo de Rama beach in Goa a day before, police said.
The accused, identified as Gaurav Katiyar, tried to project the death of his wife Diksha Gangwar (27) as an accident after committing the crime, but a video shot by a man exposed his claim.
Police found the body of Gangwar near the popular beach on Friday afternoon.
Prima facie, Katiyar killed Gangwar, whom he married a year ago, over his extramarital affair, an official said.
"The incident occurred at around 3.45 pm on Friday after Katiyar took his wife for a stroll on the beach, located not far from his workplace," the official said.
He took her to a rocky area of the beach and drowned her in the sea. "Injury marks were found on her body," the official added.
After committing the crime, Katiyar created commotion and tried to pass off the incident as an accident, he said.
Cuncolim police had also arrived at the spot.
According to the official, a video shot by a local exposed Katiyar's claims.
The video clip shows Katiyar coming out of the beach and returning apparently to ensure whether his wife has died, before raising the alarm to create the entire drama, he added.
The accused and the victim hail from Lucknow.

Suchana Seth, the chief executive officer (CEO) of an artificial intelligence start-up, was apprehended in Chitradurga in Karnataka on Monday night while she was on her way from Goa to Bengaluru, and the boy's body was found in a suitcase. She was arrested on the directions of the Goa Police.

The Goa government has made it mandatory for beach shacks to sell the state's staple fish curry-rice.

Shacks on Goa&rsquo;s beaches will now have to mandatorily serve &ldquo;fish curry-rice&rdquo;, a staple of the coastal state, along with other Indian and international cuisines, said tourism minister Rohan Khaunte on Sunday.
The compulsory inclusion of the coconut-based preparation, savoured for its tangy and spicy taste, in the menu of the joints is part of the state&rsquo;s new Shack Policy that aims to promote the Goan cuisine, the minister said.
Up until now, shacks along the shoreline offered North Indian food but Goan dishes were not available at these places, he said.
The government has now made it compulsory for shacks to "display and serve" the Goan food, including "fish curry-rice", he said.
"We have to project our rich cuisine to tourists,&rdquo; Khaunte said.
The tourism minister said that the Shack Policy, which was recently passed by the cabinet, also intends to address the challenge of illegal hawking and vending on the beaches.
He said that many women, who were involved in illegal hawking and vending on beaches, would pretend to be working at the shacks when they were apprehended by tourism department officials.
&ldquo;The new policy has mandated that each shack will have to submit the list of its staff to the department,&rdquo; he said. Those indulging in illegalities on beaches will face action, he said.
Khaunte said the department is cooperating with shack operators in possible ways, but they should also ensure that tourism is not hampered due to their actions.
He said that the state is working with a vision of quality over quantity but that won&rsquo;t happen overnight.
&ldquo;We have to work on our basic infrastructure. Anything related to tourism, we have to ensure that Goa as a tourism state has to have all the infrastructure to support the tourism industry,&rdquo; he said.
The minister said that hotels in Goa are recording an average of 80 per cent occupancy. &ldquo;The hoteliers are happy over the occupancy. But you cannot take things for granted. If there is a drop in occupancy, the hotel owners will blame the government,&rdquo; Khaunte said.
He said that the state has to step up efforts to promote tourism for which the department and other stakeholders will have to work together.

Goa's BJP govt to learn disaster management from Communist-ruled Kerala

190 claims amounting to Rs 32 lakh in connection with the destruction to the property due to heavy rains.&nbsp;

The Goa government will study Kerala's disaster management mechanism, state minister Atanasio Monserratte said in the Assembly on Monday.
Speaking during demands for grants of the revenue department, Monserratte said a state disaster management authority had been formed in Goa.
"We will be sending our team to Kerala to study their disaster management model. Kerala has a good disaster management plan," he said in response to Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, who had sought an efficient disaster management plan for Goa.
Monserratte also informed the House that his department had recently cleared 190 claims amounting to Rs 32 lakh in connection with destruction to the property due to heavy rains.&nbsp;

The chief minister said that every migrant labourer working in the state should have a labour card given by the state government.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has said that about 90 per cent of the crimes in the coastal state are committed by migrant labourers from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and other areas, urging contractors to obtain "labour cards" before employing them.
Sawant made the claim at a Labour Day function on May 1 in Panaji.
The chief minister said that every migrant labourer working in the state should have a labour card given by the state government.
The Goa government issues labour cards to those working in the private, unorganised and industrial sectors to keep a record of employment as well as extend welfare measures to this category.
Sawant said that it is necessary to track the details of labourers as &ldquo;after committing a crime in Goa, migrant labourers often return to their state and it becomes difficult to locate them&rdquo;.

After that the accused returned with a knife, assaulted the local person, further assaulted the complainant, and fled away from the spot."
The SP further said that the Dutch tourist and the local person were shifted to the hospital for treatment.
"The knife used for the commission of the crime has been recovered. FIR has been registered under section 452,354,307,506(II) of IPC," said Nidhin Valsan.

The Goa State Commission for Persons with Disabilities has issued a notice to the Dabolim airport director after a 62-year-old British woman alleged that two airport staffers extorted Rs 4,000 from her to provide wheelchair service to her.
An employee of the ground handling agency was suspended following the incident which took place on January 29, while the airport entry permits of two others were confiscated, the airport director said on Tuesday.
The commission, a quasi-judicial body, asked the director to submit an action taken report by February 13.
Katherine Frances Wolfe, who has mobility issues, had filed a complaint with the airport director, Goa's director general of police and the commission, narrating her ordeal of January 29 when she was heading back to London.
When she arrived at the Dabolim airport, the manager assigned two men to assist her with her wheelchair and baggage, said the complaint, filed by one Mikhil Vasant on her behalf.

After being alerted, police rushed to the spot and started the rescue operation. A four-year-old girl injured in the accident was taken to a hospital in Mangaon.
The bodies were sent to a government hospital for post-mortem, he said. The cause of the accident was yet to be ascertained, the police said.

Several passengers missed their flight from Dabolim airport, while office-goers were inconvenienced as they could not reach their workplace on time.
A tempo dashed an SUV on Zuari bridge, around 15 km from Panaji, disrupting vehicular movement in the morning, a senior police official said.
The traffic was held up for 45 minutes before the two vehicles were towed away by a special crane. But the congestion continued as vehicles kept queuing up on the national highway, he said. Several vehicles were stranded for more than three hours.
Avit Narvekar, who was travelling to the airport from Panaji, said that he missed his flight to Mumbai. &ldquo;We left well before time, but could not reach the airport,&rdquo; he said.
When contacted, a senior Airport Authority of India (AAI) official said they had not received any formal complaints about the delay in reaching the airport.
