In 2021, the outfit won the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, defeating the BJP and the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT).

It's the first electoral battle of 2023, with one year to go for the Lok Sabha elections. And even though established forces like BJP, Congress, and the Left Front are facing-off in the Tripura elections, a lot of attention is also directed towards a newcomer.
The Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance, or TIPRA Motha, was founded in 2021 by a member of the erstwhile royal family and former Congress leader, Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma. The same year, the outfit won the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, defeating the BJP and the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT).
In the Assembly elections, the TIPRA Motha is contesting on 42 of the 60 seats, with tribal communities as its main constituency, and a promise of pushing for creation of a separate state of Greater Tipraland for indigenous groups. But the party is mainly expected to perform well on 20 tribal-dominated seats.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has claimed that the TIPRA Motha has a secret understanding with the Congress-Left alliance to bring back Communist rule in the state. Meanwhile, there is also speculation that the party may end up hurting chances of the Opposition alliance because it is contesting on even non-tribal-dominated seats.
Even though the TIPRA Motha has said that it will only ally with a party if it supports the Greater Tipraland promise, many believe that the best-case scenario for the outfit is its emergence as a kingmaker in the Assembly elections.

The Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance, or TIPRA Motha, is just over a year old. But the fledgling party is capturing serious attention in the Tripura Assembly elections.
This could be attributed to a variety of factors, like its performance in tribal council polls, or its main poll plank of creating a separate state.
Here is what the party, led by erstwhile royal Pradyot Debbarma, is promising to electors.
The foremost promise is to make a concerted push for the creation of the state of Greater Tipraland for indigenous tribes. Secondly, TIPRA Motha says it would create a police force under the command of the existing Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), and would recruit around 6,000 youth for it.
The party says it will not force non-tribals to be relocated from TTAADC areas. It's promising a stipend of ₹25,000 per month to 'samajpatis' of indigenous tribes.
The party would create 20,000 new jobs, and also grant land rights to those denied so far. It has promised a one-time package for surrendered militants, and also a welfare board for the Manipuri community.

Days ahead of voting in Tripura for the Assembly elections, Chief Minister Manik Saha rejected the demand for a separate Greater Tipraland demand being raised by the TIPRA Motha political outfit.
CM Saha on 4 February 2023 said that the TIPRA Motha was trying to create divisions between people, and disturbing the good relations between tribal and non-tribal communities in the state.
Saha, a BJP leader, claimed that he had heard that the boundaries of the proposed Greater Tipraland pass through Assam, Mizoram, and Bangladesh, and none of them would accept the demand.
Saha claimed that the Centre is focusing on the development of all the Northeastern states. In a veiled attack on the CPI(M), the CM said, "What the BJP-IPFT government has done in five years, the others could not achieve in 35 years." Saha said the CPI(M) and the Congress have forged an alliance because of the vibrant democracy prevailing in the state.
"It is very strange that Congress leaders are coming out of CPI(M) offices and Communist workers are visiting Congress offices. How has the Congress joined hands with the CPI(M) which had killed 69 Congress leaders and workers," he asked. The chief minister, who addressed two more rallies, urged Congress leaders and workers to join the BJP.
Elections to the 60-member Assembly will be held on 16 February, and votes will be counted on 2 March.
