In a move to make an entry into India's healthcare services sector, Blackstone has officially announced an agreement to acquire a majority stake in Hyderabad-based CARE Hospitals from Evercare, a TPG RISE funds platform, for approximately $700 million (around Rs 5,827 crore).&nbsp;
Private equity funds managed by Blackstone have secured a 72.5% stake in CARE Hospitals at an enterprise value of Rs 6,600 crore.
Additionally, in a separate transaction, CARE Hospitals and TPG will jointly acquire an 80% stake in Kerala-based KIMSHEALTH, involving an investment of approximately $400 million. Blackstone will contribute $300 million, and TPG will provide the remaining $100 million as part of the arrangement.

Overall, Blackstone's investment commitment in the entire deal totals $1 billion. The incorporation of KIMSHEALTH into the CARE Hospitals network will create one of India's largest hospital platforms, spanning 23 facilities in 11 Indian cities, with a combined capacity of more than 4,000 beds.
TPG, holding its CARE Hospitals stake through the Evercare Health Fund, will maintain a substantial minority interest in the merged platform.

As per a Bloomberg report, the genetic test kit will be rolled out in the next few weeks. In 2021, Reliance acquired the Bengaluru based firm Strand Life Sciences, which developed the product. Reliance now owns 80% of the firm.&nbsp;
The genome test will be about 86% cheaper than other similar products that are available.&nbsp;
Ramesh Hariharan, chief executive officer of Strand Life told Bloomberg that this test will be able to reveal a person's predisposition to cancers, cardiac and neuro-degenerative ailments and also identify inherited genetic disorders. "It will be the cheapest such genomic profile in the world. We're going out at an aggressive price point to drive adoption as it gives us a chance to build a viable business in preventive healthcare", he went on to say.&nbsp; This project will potentially bring personal gene-mapping to India's population and can be a treasure trove of biological data that can aid drug development and disease prevention.&nbsp;

Ahead of the Budget, Medical Technology Association of India (MTaI) has urged the government to reduce customs duties and removal of health cess on imported medical devices.
MTaI, which represents medical technology companies, appreciated the various reforms undertaken by the government during the previous year, but said that more was needed to be done as 80 per cent of the medical devices used are imported.
MTaI Chairman and Director General Pavan Choudary said the customs duties and taxes levied on medical devices in India are one of the highest in the world and highest among the neighbouring countries which directly impacts patients' affordability.
"As the preparation for the Union Budget 2023 gets underway, we expect a correction in the customs duties and taxes levied on medical devices," Choudary said.
The sector, he added, requires more focus in government outlays and one way to achieve this is by increasing the public health spending to meet the current gaps in healthcare demand and supply. He also suggested the government should consider a separate budget allocation for promoting and marketing medical device sector globally.
MTaI said the high customs duty has adversely impacted the costs of medical devices in India and it should be reduced to 2.5 per cent. Also, the 5 per cent health cess ad valorem imposed on imported medical devices has further compounded the burden on the industry and should be removed.

&nbsp;The Supreme Court Friday directed the Centre and the states to file their responses on a plea seeking directions for a uniform standard of healthcare for citizens in line with the Constitution by adopting provisions of the Clinical Establishments Act, 2010.
A bench of Justices B R Gavai and Vikram Nath granted four weeks to the Union of India and the state governments to file their replies.
The top court was hearing a plea filed by Jan Swasthya Abhiyan, Patients' Rights Campaign and K M Gopakumar which had also sought directions for operationalising all the provisions of the Act, as well as Clinical Establishment Rules, 2012 in order to ensure affordable and quality healthcare.

The plea had sought directions for notification and implementation of the conditions for registration of clinical establishments such as observance of minimum standards, display of rates for procedures and services, compliance with the standard treatment protocol, as provided in Sections 11 and 12 of the CEA read with Rule 9 of the Rules, 2012.
The petition had also sought directions that a grievance redressal mechanism be created for the patients at the district, state and national level national level till the lacunae in the CEA are filled by a suitable legislation.
The PIL said the duty to provide healthcare to citizens was put on the government under Article 47 of the Constitution; however, the public healthcare system did not proceed as conceived and treats only 30 per cent of the patients, while the rest are treated by the private sector.
The petition contended that the public healthcare system suffers from a lack of public health infrastructure and human resources, non-availability of medicines, lack of public investment and forced dependency on the private sector.
The plea had submitted that there is an urgent need to develop the public healthcare system in India by providing proper infrastructure and sufficient budget to ensure that the maximum facilities exist in the public domain, not only in normal times but also at the time of emergencies such as Covid-19.

The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) had identified the list of 300 drugs, which include widely used medicines, such as painkillers, contraceptives, vitamins, blood-sugar, and hypertension medicines.
These brands would include the top-selling popular medicines in the Indian pharma market such as Allegra, Dolo, Augmentin, Saridon, Calpol, and Thyronorm among others.

A pregnant tribal woman was carried in a makeshift stretcher due to lack of proper road in a village in Maharashtra's Palghar district and she delivered a baby midway in a dense and dark forest, officials said on Monday.
The 21-year-old woman, from Eina village in Jawhar taluka, went into labour on the intervening night of Saturday-Sunday, a medical officer said.
As there was no proper road connectivity to the nearest hospital, villagers carried her in a 'dholi' (makeshift stretcher) through a thick forest at around 3 am for five kilometres.
A video showing some people carrying the woman through the forest surfaced on social media platforms.
The woman delivered a baby girl midway in the forest, the medical officer said.
The mother and child were admitted to Jawhar Patangshah Sub District Hospital in the early hours of Sunday. Both of them are fine now, the hospital's medical superintendent Dr Ramdas Marad said.

The village is situated in a remote area and does not have proper road connectivity.
Last month, a 26-year-old pregnant tribal woman was carried in a makeshift stretcher due to lack of a proper road in a village in Mokhada taluka here amid heavy rains. She lost her twin infants at birth as a result of the delay in reaching a medical centre.
Palghar Zilla Parishad president Vaidehi Wadhan told reporters on Sunday that villages in remote areas do not have proper road connectivity.
Health authorities have been instructed to take steps and avoid such incidents, she said.&nbsp;

Out Of Breath: The Okhla Landfill

Not only are these landfills unaesthetic to the eye, but they also assume the role of disease epicentres; hereby, risking the lives of neighbouring populations. Nabina and Ohida examine the effects of the mountain on the physical, psychological and social well being of its neighbours. Among the worst affected by the resultant skin diseases, air-borne diseases and polluted water bodies are the nearby regions of Tehkhand and Tughlaqabad.
Although things do seem bleak based on this description, it should be noted that South Delhi Municipal Corporation has taken certain measures to reduce the negative impact of the landfill. As of July 2019, the height of the garbage mound had been brought down from 58m to 38m. Furthermore, the MCD had initiated the process of converting parts of the Okhla landfill into a green eco-park in March of 2018.

According to a new study published in The Lancet Journal, taking vitamin D supplements has no impact on bone health. It only helps in preventing rare conditions like rickets and osteomalacia. Contrary to common belief, the supplements, irrespective of the dose, do not prevent falls or fractures. Researchers from the University of Auckland, reviewed 81 studies and found no meaningful effect of vitamin D supplementation when it came to reducing any fractures or falls.
