As the ongoing heat wave grips several parts of the country, manufacturers of cola, beverages, ice creams, and other hydrating products are witnessing a significant rise in demand. Companies like PepsiCo India and Coca-Cola have reported skyrocketing consumption both in-home and out-of-home across the east, north, and central regions of India.
<h3>Thirst for beverages on rise</h3>
To meet the anticipated surge, these companies have strategically maintained high inventory levels and ensured product availability across various retail platforms, including e-commerce. A spokesperson from PepsiCo India noted, "With temperatures soaring, consumers are seeking refreshing and hydrating beverages to beat the summer heat. We are ensuring our products like 7UP, Nimbooz, Pepsi, Slice, Mountain Dew, Gatorade, and Sting are widely available."
Similarly, Coca-Cola India is experiencing consistent growth in sales as the summer season reaches its peak. The company's portfolio, which includes popular brands such as Coke, ThumsUP, Maaza, Sprite, and Minute Maid, is seeing robust demand. A spokesperson from Coca-Cola India stated, "We remain optimistic about our sparkling, hydration, and juice segments. Our goal is to scale distribution through both traditional and emerging channels to refresh consumers."
<h3>Ice-cream demand soars</h3>
Ice cream manufacturer Havmor, now part of South Korean confectionery giant LOTTE Wellfood Co, has also ramped up production to cater to the increased demand. "Last year was one of the warmest summers, and this year has surpassed it with the highest temperatures recorded," said Havmor Ice Cream Managing Director Komal Anand. To address this, Havmor has expanded production capacity and plans to open a new factory in Pune by July-August 2024.
Additionally, FMCG maker Dabur India is experiencing growing demand for its summer-centric products, particularly within its Real brand juice and glucose portfolio. Anshul Gupta, Dabur India Sales Head, highlighted the increasing need for instant energy and hydration. "With intensifying heatwave conditions, we have expanded our glucose portfolio and entered the ready-to-drink glucose category to meet the growing demand," he said.

The soaring temperatures also caused water scarcity in some parts of the country including Delhi.

India Friday reported at least 40 suspected heat-related deaths, 25 of them of staff deployed on Lok Sabha poll duty in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, as heatwave conditions gripped a large swathe of the country.
According to officials, heat-related deaths were reported from Odisha (10), Bihar (8), Jharkhand (4) and Uttar Pradesh (1) on Thursday also. Rajasthan has reported at least five heat-related deaths so far.
Among the fatalities recorded on Friday, the maximum 17 were from Uttar Pradesh, 14 from Bihar, five from Odisha and four from Jharkhand, where officials said more than 1,300 people are hospitalised with heatstroke conditions.
The soaring temperatures also caused water scarcity in some parts of the country including in Delhi where the residents faced continued acute shortages, with people in long queues struggling to secure enough to meet their daily needs.
"I stand in line from 4 am, but due to the crowd, I cannot reach the water tanker... It's hard to get water," said Vibha Devi, a resident of Delhi's Geeta Colony.
According to the India Meteorological Department, the Kanpur (IAF) weather station recorded the maximum temperature in the country at 48.2. Haryana's Sirsa was the second hottest place at 47.8 degree Celsius. Delhi's Ayanagar recorded the maximum temperature for the city at 47 degrees Celsius.
Overall, the IMD said heatwave to severe heatwave conditions prevailed over many parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh; in some parts of Bihar, east Madhya Pradesh; in isolated pockets of Odisha, Jharkhand.
Heatwave conditions also prevailed in some parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Vidarbha, West Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Heat wave conditions have been prevailing over Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi.
These conditions are likely to abate during the next two-three days, the India Meteorological Department said the prevailing heatwave.
Meanwhile, officials in Uttar Pradesh -- where 13 seats including in Sonbhadra district and Mirzapur are going to polls on Saturday -- said at least 15 election staff died after suspected heatstroke.
Dr Raj Bahadur Kamal, the principal of Mirzapur's Maa Vindhyavasini Autonomous State Medical College, told PTI 13 poll staff died at the hospital. The deceased include seven home guard jawans, three sanitation workers, one clerk posted at the Chief Medical Officer's office, one chakbandi adhikaari (consolidation officer), and one peon in the home guard team.
He said they were brought to the facility with high fever and high blood pressure.
In Sonbhadra district, two polling staff died due to heat-related causes while nine personnel are being treated at a hospital, officials said.
Officials in Uttar Pradesh's in Kaushambi said two people, including an elderly woman, died following heat stroke on Thursday, at the district hospital.
In neighbouring Bihar -- where eight Lok Sabha seats are voting on Saturday -- officials said fourteen people, including 10 polling personnel, have died due to heatstroke in the past two days.
Three election officials died in Rohtas, and one each died in Kaimur and Aurangabad districts, it said. Four other people died in different parts of the state, it added.
Due to the heatwave conditions, all schools, coaching institutes and anganwadi centres were shut till June 8.
The Odisha government, meanwhile, Friday confirmed five sunstroke-related deaths so far, while an inquiry into 18 more casualties suspected to be linked to heat-related illness is currently underway.
Four persons died of sunstroke in Jharkhand on Friday, while 1,326 others were admitted to hospital amid sweltering heat in most parts of the eastern state, officials said.
All district hospitals and other medical facilities have been asked to set aside air-conditioned rooms and empty beds for heatstroke patients, they said.
"Four persons - three in Palamu and one in Jamshedpur - died of heatstroke in Jharkhand. These deaths did not occur in hospitals. As many as 1,326 people were admitted to hospitals in different districts of the state due to heat-related issues. Out of these, 63 are confirmed cases of heatstroke so far," Dr Alok Trivedi, Mission Director, National Health Mission (Jharkhand), told PTI.
Meanwhile, the IMD said the Southwest Monsoon has advanced into remaining parts of northeast Bay of Bengal and some parts of northwest Bay of Bengal, remaining parts of Tripura, Meghalaya and Assam and most parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.

&nbsp;Large parts of northern and central India remained in the grip of a sweltering heat wave on Wednesday with the maximum temperature in the national capital soaring to a 79-year high.
While Delhi's primary weather station Safdarjung observatory recorded a maximum of 46.8 degrees Celsius, the weather officials in the city were left baffled when Mungeshpur reported 52.9 degrees prompting the IMD to examine the automatic weather station in the locality for possible errors in its sensors.
Cities and towns across Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh sizzled at maximum temperatures in excess of 47 degrees Celsius with Rohtak and Prayagraj logging 48.8 degrees, the highest temperatures recorded in the country on Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
According to the IMD, both Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh and Rohtak in Haryana broke records for the highest maximum temperature ever recorded for the month.
Prayagraj had clocked a maximum of 48.4 degrees Celsius on May 30, 1994. For Rohtak, the previous all-time high maximum was 47.2 degrees on June 6, 1995.
But, it was the maximum temperature of 52.9 degrees Celsius in Mungeshpur, a densely populated locality amid fields and open spaces on the fringes of the national capital that left weather scientists flummoxed.
"It looks abnormal and it is an outlier when compared with other weather stations in the national capital region," IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said in a statement.
Earth Sciences Minister Kiren Rijiju also directed the IMD to verify the weather station in Mungeshpur for possible errors as the maximum temperatures had witnessed a slight decline on Wednesday from the 49.9 degrees recorded at three weather stations in the national capital.
The weather office has said the heat wave conditions were likely to abate over the next couple of days due to a western disturbance, rainfall, thunderstorms and moist south-westerly winds blowing from the Arabian Sea to northwest India.
Una, one of the entry points for Himachal Pradesh, logged a maximum temperature of 46 degrees Celsius, breaking the previous record of 45.2 degrees observed on May 24, 2013.
Karwar in coastal Karnataka also recorded a maximum temperature of 38 degrees, the hottest in May in the state. The previous record for 37.6 degrees was on May 5, 2022.
Amid intense heat wave conditions in the state, the Bihar government ordered the closure of all private and government-run schools, coaching institutes and anganwadi centres until June 8.
The decision came in response to reports of several students fainting due to extreme heat wave conditions. Incidents of students fainting were reported from Sheikhpura, Begusarai, East Champaran, and other regions due to the scorching heat.
Meanwhile, the IMD has forecast that heat wave conditions are expected to persist for another three or four days in the state. Officials from the Bihar Disaster Management Department advised people to avoid heat exposure, stay cool, and prevent dehydration.
In Haryana, intense heat prevailed in Hisar, which recorded a maximum temperature of 48.5 degrees Celsius. Mahendragarh recorded a high of 48.3 degrees Celsius while Sirsa sweltered at 48.2 degrees.
Extremely hot weather conditions also prevailed in Jhajjar and Faridabad, which recorded respective maximums of 48.4 degrees Celsius and 48 degrees Celsius. Ambala recorded a high of 44.3 degrees and Karnal 42.2 degrees.
Meanwhile, Rohtak and Hisar received light showers in the evening, providing temporary respite from the sizzling weather.
In Punjab, Bathinda was the hottest with a high of 48.5 degrees Celsius. The mercury reached 46.1 degrees Celsius in both Ludhiana and Pathankot.
Faridkot recorded a high of 46 degrees Celsius, Amritsar 45.8 degrees, Patiala 45.7 degrees, and Gurdaspur 44.5 degrees.
Intense heat conditions also prevailed in Rajasthan despite the maximum temperatures falling by one to three degrees Celsius.
Pilani town in Jhunjhunu district was recorded as the hottest place in the state with 48.2 degrees Celsius, followed by Churu, where the day temperature was 47.7 degrees Celsius.

The analysis was done based on hospital admissions related to high temperatures during summer over more than a decade in Spain. It found that extreme heat impacted people with these conditions the most.
Hicham Achebak, a researcher at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health said, "There are a number of reasons to explain this. For example, in people with obesity, heat loss responses work less efficiently, as body fat acts as an insulator, making them more susceptible to heat disorders."&nbsp;

According to the report, the researchers examined data from over 11.2 million emergency hospital admissions recorded between 2006 and 2019 across 48 provinces in mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, a Mediterranean archipelago off the eastern coast of Spain.
Utilizing statistical analysis techniques, the team assessed the impact of temperature variations on various causes of hospitalizations during the summer months (June to September) in each province. Their analysis also accounted for daily average temperatures, relative humidity, and air pollution levels, including PM2.5 concentrations.
<h3>Ways to stay safe from heatwave</h3>
1. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don&rsquo;t feel thirsty.
2. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks, as they can dehydrate you.
3. Remain indoors during the hottest parts of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
4. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing.
5. Limit outdoor activities and avoid strenuous exercise during peak heat hours.
6. Keep blinds, curtains, or shades closed during the day to block out the sun and keep your home cooler.
7. Eat smaller, lighter meals that are easier to digest, and avoid hot and heavy foods.
8. Visit a healthcare expert in case of any health issue caused due to high temperature.

Mumbai temp hits 39.4 degrees Celsius, highest in country for second time in March: IMD

The Santacruz observatory and the Colaba observatory recorded a temperature of 39.4 degrees Celsius and 35.8 degrees Celsius, respectively, on Sunday.

For the second time in the current month, Mumbai recorded the highest maximum temperature in the country at 39.4 degrees Celsius on Sunday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said, attributing the rise in mercury to absent or delayed wind breeze.
The IMD had warned of a heat wave for Sunday and Monday.
The Santacruz observatory and the Colaba observatory recorded a temperature of 39.4 degrees Celsius and 35.8 degrees Celsius, respectively, on Sunday.
"This is for the second time this month that Mumbai has recorded the highest maximum temperature in the country. On March 6, Santacruz (observatory) recorded 39.1 degrees Celsius, also the highest in the country. On Sunday, it recorded 39.4 degrees Celsius," said IMD scientist Rajendra Jenamani.
He said the temperature recorded in the coastal Konkan region, which encompasses Mumbai, was 4-6 degrees Celsius above normal on March 12.
This was also observed between March 5-7 when the temperature was 5-7 degrees above normal, Jenamani added.
"Normally, Konkan witnesses low temperatures during this time because of the sea breeze at around 11.30 am to 1 pm. However, in the last seven-ten days the sea breeze is absent or delayed because of the dominant easterly winds which have resulted in high temperatures," he said, adding that the temperature should reach highest between Rajasthan and Gujarat but it is controlled due to thunderstorm cloud and favourable wind.

The previous record was 38.7C set in 2019 at Cambridge Botanic Garden in eastern England. The Meteorological (Met) Office said the reading was provisional as the temperatures are expected to soar further with other regions reporting their readings at different times of the day.
The country was braced for “unprecedented” temperatures on Tuesday after the ongoing heat wave resulted in the hottest night on record at 26 degrees Celsius in parts of London overnight on Monday.
The Met Office red warning of danger to life from extreme heat remains in place for much of central, northern, and south-east England, including the capital city. At least five people are believed to have drowned after attempting to escape the heat in rivers and lakes.
“Tuesday will be a pretty unprecedented day, with the mercury possibly reaching highs of 41C in spots in England. This will make it the hottest day on record and the first time we have seen temperatures as high as 40C," said Rachel Ayers, a Met Office forecaster.
“There are likely to be delays on roads, with road closures, as well as possible delays and cancellations to trains and maybe issues with air travel. This could pose a significant health risk to those stuck on services or roads during the heat,” she said.
A high of 38.1C was reached in Suffolk, eastern England, on Monday, just short of the UK record of 38.7C set in 2019. Scotland and Wales are also forecast to see their hottest days on record after a scorching Monday, when the latter set a new high temperature mark at 37.1C.
Network Rail issued a "do not travel" warning for Tuesday, affecting services travelling through the "red zone" under the Met Office warning map. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said the UK's rail network could not cope with the extreme heat, adding that it would take "many years" before upgrades would mean services could handle the hotter climate.
"The simple answer is no, the network cannot cope with the heat right now," he told the BBC.
"In 40C heat, tracks can reach 50C, 60C, and even 70C, and there's a severe danger of tracks buckling and a terrible derailing. We are building new specifications, creating overhead lines that can withstand higher temperatures. But with the best will in the world, this is infrastructure which has taken decades to build, with some of our railways stretching back 200 years," he said.
The country’s infrastructure structured around cold temperatures has struggled to cope with the extreme heat since the weekend. Runways at Luton Airport and Royal Air Force (RAF) Brize Norton were also impacted by the heat on Monday, forcing aircraft to divert.
There have been warnings of pressure on hospitals and ambulance services as temperatures are set to peak on Tuesday. Monday saw a number of schools close ahead of a scheduled annual summer break.
Water companies in southern and eastern England have warned increased demand is leading to low pressure, and even interrupted supply, for some households.
According to experts, heatwaves are becoming more likely and more extreme because of human-induced climate change. The world has already warmed by about 1.1C since the industrial era began, and temperatures are set to keep rising unless sharp cuts are made to carbon emissions.

A high of 38.1C was reached in Suffolk, eastern England, on Monday, just short of the UK record of 38.7C set in 2019. Scotland and Wales are also forecast to see their hottest days on record after a scorching Monday, when the latter set a new high temperature mark at 37.1C.
Network Rail issued a "do not travel" warning for Tuesday, affecting services travelling through the "red zone" under the Met Office warning map. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said the UK's rail network could not cope with the extreme heat, adding that it would take "many years" before upgrades would mean services could handle the hotter climate.
"The simple answer is no, the network cannot cope with the heat right now," he told the BBC.
"In 40C heat, tracks can reach 50C, 60C, and even 70C, and there's a severe danger of tracks buckling and a terrible derailing. We are building new specifications, creating overhead lines that can withstand higher temperatures. But with the best will in the world, this is infrastructure which has taken decades to build, with some of our railways stretching back 200 years," he said.
The country&rsquo;s infrastructure structured around cold temperatures has struggled to cope with the extreme heat since the weekend. Runways at Luton Airport and Royal Air Force (RAF) Brize Norton were also impacted by the heat on Monday, forcing aircraft to divert.

In order to avoid the heatwave, Kumar decided to grow some plants on the rooftop of his auto which helps him and as well as the passengers stay cool in the vehicle. Plants on his vehicle's rooftop protect passengers from the direct sunlight. So far, Kumar’s garden has almost 25 types of plants, such as tomatoes, okra, snake gourd, and spinach.
Kumar has not recently implemented this idea instead he had implemented this in 2020 itself, he told Reuters 'I thought that this will provide a cooling effect during summer so that is why I grew plants on it.' A fresh spell of heatwave is likely to begin over northwest India from May 7 and over central India from May 8, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday.
Heatwave conditions are predicted over Rajasthan on May 7 to May 9, and over south Haryana, Delhi, southwest Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha region of Maharashtra on May 8 and May 9, it said.
With scanty rains owing to feeble western disturbances, northwest and central India experienced the hottest April in 122 years with average maximum temperature touching 35.9 degrees Celsius and 37.78 degrees Celsius, respectively.
 
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday chaired an important meeting to review preparations for heatwave management and monsoon preparedness in which he stressed on the need to take all measures to avoid deaths due to heatwave or fire incidents.
During the meeting, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) briefed about the persistence of high temperatures in March-May 2022 across the country, the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement.
Prime Minister Modi observed that "we need to take all measures" to avoid deaths due to heatwave or fire incidents, according to the statement.
He also added that the response time towards any such incidents should be minimal.
Modi stressed that in view of rising temperatures, regular hospital fire safety audits need to be done.
The prime minister also spoke about the need to work to substantially reduce the vulnerability of forests across the diverse forest ecosystems in the country against fire hazards, enhance the capabilities of forest personnel and institutions for timely detection of a possible fire and for fighting fires, and to speed up recovery after a fire event, according to the statement.
Modi directed that in view of upcoming monsoon, arrangements for monitoring the quality of drinking water need to be ensured to avoid contamination and resultant spread of water-borne diseases, it said.
The PMO said that the need for effective coordination between central and state agencies to ensure preparedness of all systems for any incidents in the wake of heatwave and upcoming monsoon was also discussed in the meeting.
States and UTs have been advised to prepare 'Heat Action Plans' as a standard response at the state, district and city levels, it said.
Regarding southwest monsoon preparedness, all states have been advised to prepare 'flood preparedness plans' and undertake appropriate preparedness measures, the PMO said.
NDRF has been advised to develop its deployment plan in flood-affected states, it said, adding that active use of social media for sensitisation of communities has to be widely adopted.
The meeting was attended by the principal secretary to the prime minister, advisors to PM, cabinet secretary, secretaries in the ministries of home, health, Jal Shakti, member NDMA, DGs of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and DG NDRF.

India's weather forecasting agency also said that northwest and west central parts of the country - Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana - will continue to experience above normal temperatures in May as well.
Nights would be warmer in May in most parts of the country, except some regions of south peninsular India. 
Speaking about rainfall, India Meteorological Department's Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said that the average rainfall in May 2022 over the country is most likely to be above normal but parts of northwest and northeast India as well as the extreme southeast Peninsula are expected to get below normal rainfall.

It is hardly the end of spring and the India’s weather bureau has already predicted heatwaves across northwest India over the next 2-3 days.
People living in places like Delhi,  western Rajasthan, Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, parts of Saurashtra, Kutch and western Madhya Pradesh have been experiencing a warmer March. In the past few days, maximum temperatures have been 4°C to 6°C above normal with temperatures soaring above 40°C in some cities
The higher temperatures and heatwave conditions are being attributed to scarce rainfall in March. According to the Met Dept, The rainfall deficit in March so far stands at 72% to 88% over northwest India, 85% over central India, 59% over east and northeast India, and 14% over the south peninsula, 
On March 1, the met department had predicted normal rainfall , i.e 83%-117% for the month across the country.
Another reason for the rise in mercury levels in north India according to the weather dept is the hot wind blowing from Pakistan and Rajasthan.

The higher temperatures and heatwave conditions are being attributed to scarce rainfall in March. According to the Met Dept, The rainfall deficit in March so far stands at 72% to 88% over northwest India, 85% over central India, 59% over east and northeast India, and 14% over the south peninsula,&nbsp;
On March 1, the met department had predicted normal rainfall , i.e 83%-117% for the month across the country.
Another reason for the rise in mercury levels in north India according to the weather dept is the hot wind blowing from Pakistan and Rajasthan.

Climate scientist for UCLA Daniel Swain&nbsp;tweeted&nbsp;that the wildfire was the "singularly most extreme" he had ever seen on satellite."This is a literal firestorm, producing thousands of lightning strikes and almost certainly countless new fires," he wrote.
