Delhi, which is facing a severe water crisis, recorded a maximum temperature of 44 degrees Celsius over five notches above the normal.

Large parts of northern and eastern India remained in the grip of a sweltering heatwave on Tuesday, driving power demands to record highs with warmer-than-usual nights further exacerbating people's distress.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said heat wave to severe heatwave conditions prevailed in parts of Uttar Pradesh, south Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab and pockets of north Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar and the Jammu division.
Maximum temperatures ranged from 44 to 46 degrees Celsius in many parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and some parts of north Madhya Pradesh, south Bihar and north Rajasthan.
The blistering heat has left a large number of people scrambling for water, with storage levels in reservoirs and rivers hitting record lows. The shortage of water for irrigation is impacting agriculture in some areas.
The power grids are under immense pressure and there has been an increase in incidents of short circuits and fires.
Delhi, which is facing a severe water crisis, recorded a maximum temperature of 44 degrees Celsius over five notches above the normal. The minimum temperature in the city was 33.8 degrees Celsius, at least six notches above what is normal for this time of the year.
The national capital's peak power demand on Tuesday afternoon reached 8,647 MW, the highest ever for the city. According to officials, cooling load due to the increased use of air conditioners and other cooling appliances amid the relentless heat wave has led to the record rise in power demand.
Hospitals in Delhi-NCR have been seeing an influx of patients with complaints of heat stroke and heat exhaustion as the mercury continued to soar, with doctors advising the elderly and immuno-compromised patients to avoid stepping outdoors.
IMD officials said high minimum temperatures or warm nights are exacerbating the impact of the deadly heat.
High night temperatures are considered dangerous because the body does not get a chance to cool down. Increasing nighttime temperature is more common in cities because of the urban heat island effect, in which metro areas are significantly hotter than their surroundings.
At least 10 places in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab and Haryana reached or surpassed 45 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, with Orai in Uttar Pradesh being the warmest place in the country at 46.4 degrees Celsius.
"This is scaring me. The minimum temperature in cities is not going down. People are not getting a chance to recover which means that we are getting more deaths at night than during the daytime, because normally the minimum temperature would fall and you would be able to recover to go back to work the next day, just not getting that," noted environmentalist Sunita Narain told PTI editors here.
India is experiencing one of its hottest summers this time. Multiple heat waves have pushed millions in the country to their limits and many states have reported heat-related deaths.
According to IMD, around 40 per cent of the country has recorded double the number of heat wave days than it usually does.
In Rajasthan, Sangaria was the hottest place in the state with a maximum temperature of 44.9 degrees Celsius. The night temperature in all cities of the state was two to 7.3 degrees higher than normal.
Rajasthan has hit 50 degrees Celsius twice over the last few weeks, and Delhi has recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius for 36 consecutive days.
The IMD also said heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam and Meghalaya during the next two days.
According to data compiled by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), 46 heat-related deaths and over 19,000 cases of suspected heat stroke were reported in the country in May. Officials say this data does not include deaths from many states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Delhi, and could just be the tip of the iceberg.
Experts attribute the scorching heat to climate change and the naturally occurring El Ni&ntilde;o phenomenon -- which is basically unusual warming of the ocean surface in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean.
While heat waves are common in India during April and May, scientists say climate change has made them more frequent and intense.
Data shows that 12 of the warmest years in India have occurred since 2006, with 2016 experiencing the highest temperatures to date.
The World Weather Attribution Group said similar heatwaves, which once occurred every 30 years, have become about 45 times more likely due to climate change.
Experts say urban regions like Delhi-NCR have become heat chambers due to the loss of green cover and water bodies, and mindless concretization, which causes a heat multiplier effect.
Severe and frequent heat waves have a bigger impact on low-income households, which often have limited capacity to deal with extreme heat due to poor access to water and electricity. Also, the design and construction of informal houses often result in poor ventilation and little shelter from heat.
The heat is testing the endurance of outdoor workers, forcing them to take frequent breaks, which leads to a loss of income.
According to a survey conducted by Greenpeace India and the National Hawker Federation, over 80 per cent of the street vendors surveyed in Delhi reported a decline in customers during heatwave days in April and May, and around 50 per cent experienced significant income loss.
Governments are ensuring that the less privileged have enough water and electricity. As immediate response measures, water-filled tankers are being sent to places grappling with water shortages. Gas-fired power generation is being increased to avoid power cuts.
As long-term measures, central and state governments are updating their heat action plans, identifying vulnerable communities, and implementing solutions such as cool roofing, improving green cover, and recharging water bodies. Governments are also installing subsidized rooftop solar systems to help households not yet connected to the power grid access electricity.&nbsp;

India&rsquo;s diesel demand saw a significant decline in June due to extreme heat conditions that curtailed travel, according to preliminary data from state-owned firms. Traditionally, fuel sales surge during election periods, but this year, the trend has reversed, with month-on-month declines even after the general elections.
<h3>Diesel Demand Decline</h3>
In the first half of June, petrol sales from three state-owned firms, which control 90% of the market, remained steady at 1.42 million tonnes, nearly identical to the 1.41 million tonnes consumed in the same period last year. However, month-on-month consumption dropped by 4.6%.
Diesel sales decreased by 3.9% to 3.95 million tonnes from June 1-15 compared to the same period last year. This followed declines of 2.3% in April, 2.7% in March, and 1.1% in May. Despite the summer harvest season and increased air conditioning use due to the scorching heat, fuel consumption did not rise as expected.
In mid-March, petrol and diesel prices were reduced by Rs 2 per litre, ending a nearly two-year hiatus in rate revisions, which was anticipated to boost sales. Despite this, month-on-month petrol sales fell by 3.6% compared to the 1.47 million tonnes consumed from May 1-15. Diesel demand remained flat month-on-month at 3.54 million tonnes for the first half of May.
Diesel, accounting for almost 40% of India's petroleum product consumption, saw a 10.5% drop from June 1-15, 2022. It was, however, 14% higher compared to the same period in 2020. The transport sector, which consumes 70% of all diesel sales, and agriculture sectors using diesel for harvesters and tractors, were significantly affected.
Jet fuel (ATF) sales rose 2.3% year-on-year to 331,000 tonnes during the first half of June but were 4.5% lower month-on-month compared to early May. ATF demand exceeded pre-Covid levels by 10.1% over June 1-15, 2022, and by 6.1% compared to 2020.
Cooking gas (LPG) sales slightly increased by 0.1% year-on-year to 1.24 million tonnes for the same period in June 2024. However, LPG consumption was 0.9% lower than in June 2022 and 32% higher than in June 2020. Month-on-month, LPG demand fell by 5.2% from 1.3 million tonnes in early May.

The blistering heatwave this year has skyrocketed the demand for room air-conditioners across the country, expecting a record annual sale of around 14 million units, according to the Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association.
The industry had "record-breaking figures" for sales of air-conditioners in May and expects a surge of 30 to 40 per cent in volume growth in summers alone, Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association (CEAMA) President Sunil Vachani told PTI.

Soaring temperatures and heat waves have now made AC a "quintessential requirement" for households across urban areas, he said.
The Indian AC market is also evolving helped by energy-efficient models that are suitable across income brackets and by investment by the companies in indigenous manufacturing units of components.
"As the market evolves, we expect annual sales volumes to be around 14 million units, highlighting the sector's robust expansion," Vachani said.
The Indian residential AC market is expected to be around 10-11 million units, in which brands like Voltas, LG, Hitachi Johnson, Lloyd, Panasonic, Daikin, and Godrej compete.

A government doctor in Odisha said that the deaths in the state occurred within a span of six hours from 2 pm onwards.&nbsp;

As many as 19 people died due to heatstroke in Bihar as the state experienced intense heatwave conditions, with the temperature exceeding 44 degrees Celsius on Thursday.
Aurangabad registered the maximum number of deaths at 12 while four people lost their lives in the Kaimur district, including a worker on election duty. The scorching heat has also claimed three lives in Arrah.
Dr Sahil Raj, a doctor at Kaimur&rsquo;s Mohania sub-divisional hospital, told ANI news agency that a total of 40 people had come to the hospital who had been affected by heat stroke.
In Odisha, 10 people died of suspected heatstroke in Rourkela city.&nbsp;
The director-in-charge (DIC) of Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH), Dr Sudharani Pradhan, told PTI news agency that the deaths occurred within a span of six hours from 2 pm onwards on Thursday.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Eight people were dead by the time they reached the hospital, while the rest died while undergoing treatment here. This was likely due to the intense heatwave,&rdquo; she said.
&ldquo;The body temperatures were around 103-104 degrees Fahrenheit, which is very high given the weather conditions. This could be the possible reason behind the deaths. The history could not be studied as they arrive dead,&rdquo; she said.
A few more people were undergoing treatment.
&ldquo;At this moment the real cause is not known. It could be ascertained tomorrow after the post-mortem examination,&rdquo; said Pradhan.

Temperatures in 17 locations breached 48 degrees Celsius on Monday, with the relentless heat affecting health and livelihoods across large parts of northwestern and central India.
However, some relief from the scorching heat is expected after three days due to a western disturbance and moisture incursion from the Arabian Sea, India Meteorological Department (IMD) chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said.
"There could be thunderstorm activity in northwest India and rain in the western Himalayan region," he said.
The national capital stayed under the grip of searing heat as maximum temperatures in parts of the city crossed 48 degrees Celsius. The city was on red alert on Monday and will remain so for the next three days, the weather office said.
The IMD has predicted a higher number of heatwave days in northwest India and adjoining parts of the central region in June.
"Normally, northwest India and the adjoining areas record two to three heatwave days in June. This time, we expect four to six days of heatwave in this region," Mohapatra said at a press conference.
Except for a few parts of southern peninsular India, normal to above-normal maximum temperatures are expected across the country in June, he added.
People endured the deadly heat on Monday, with temperatures crossing 48 degrees Celsius in 17 places.
At 49.4 degrees Celsius, Rajasthan's Phalodi was the warmest place in the country. At least eight more locations in the desert state recorded temperatures above 48 degrees Celsius.
The mercury surged to 48.4 degrees in Haryana's Sirsa, 48.8 degrees in Delhi's Mungeshpur, 48.4 degrees in Punjab's Bathinda, 48.1 degrees in Uttar Pradesh's Jhansi, and 48.7 degrees in Madhya Pradesh's Niwari.
Even the hills of Himachal Pradesh, a preferred destination to escape the punishing heat in the plains, experienced sizzling temperatures. Una sizzled at 44 degrees Celsius, while Mandi recorded a high of 39.4 degrees.
With the heat testing the disaster preparedness of states, Delhi's Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj announced that government-run hospitals would reserve two beds each for heatstroke patients.
The scorching heat prompted the Haryana government to advance summer vacations in state-run and private schools to Tuesday.
The deadly heatwave is testing power grids and leading to water shortages in parts of the country.
According to the Central Water Commission, water storage in 150 major reservoirs in India dropped to just 24 per cent of their live storage last week, exacerbating water shortages in many states and significantly affecting hydropower generation.
The Maharashtra irrigation department said that the water stock in Jayakwadi dam in the drought-prone Marathwada region stood at a mere 5.19 per cent of its capacity on Monday after recording an evaporation loss of 1.15 MCM (million cubic metres) in a single day due to the heat.
The intense heat has already driven India's power demand to 239.96 gigawatts, the highest so far this season, with air conditioners and coolers in homes and offices running at full capacity.
Experts anticipate that power demand could rise even further and surpass the all-time high of 243.27 GW recorded in September 2023.
Severe heat waves have impacted a large number of people in parts of India for three consecutive years, affecting health, water availability, agriculture, power generation, and other sectors of the economy.
The heatwave in May has seen several places across the country, including Assam, Himachal Pradesh, and Arunachal Pradesh, recording their all-time high temperatures and Rajasthan reporting several heat-related deaths.
Parts of India saw record-breaking maximum temperatures in April as well, with Kerala reporting at least five deaths due to suspected heatstroke.
Similar heatwaves could occur once every 30 years, and these have already become about 45 times more likely due to climate change, according to 'World Weather Attribution', a group of leading climate scientists.
Experts say those working outdoors, the elderly, and children are at higher risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. According to the World Health Organization, more than 166,000 people died as a result of heatwaves between 1998 and 2017.
India reported 3,812 deaths due to heatwaves between 2015 and 2022, with Andhra Pradesh alone logging 2,419 fatalities, the government informed Parliament in July last year.
In the absence of adequate cold-chain infrastructure, extreme heat can cause major damage to fresh produce. Studies show India faces food losses worth USD 13 billion a year, with only four per cent of fresh produce covered by cold chain facilities.
According to a World Bank report, India could account for 34 million of the projected 80 million global job losses from heat stress-associated productivity decline by 2030.

Kuldeep Srivastava, IMD Scientist told Hindustan Times, "Easterly winds began to impact Delhi from Tuesday and gained strength on Wednesday when the HI crossed 55&deg;C. Despite strong wind speed on Thursday, which led to a drop in Delhi&rsquo;s maximum temperature, the HI remained high as there was a lot of moisture in the air."

FMCG major Dabur India expects a stronger and longer summer would be good for the company's summer-centric products, particularly for its beverages and glucose portfolio

With a gradual rise in temperature and the start of heatwave, FMCG and dairy firms selling cola-based fizz drinks, juices, mineral water, ice creams and milk-based beverages expect a spike in sales and have ramped up their production and stocks to meet the anticipated consumer demand.
The makers are launching new products keeping in mind the evolving consumer preferences and also investing substantially on promotions and expansion of the channels this season, company executives of beverage and ice cream makers said.
Beverages major PepsiCo said summer months are naturally the most favourable season for its category and it is "optimistic" that its portfolio of brands will continue to delight consumers during the period.
The company which owns brands as -- Pepsi, 7up, Mirinda, Mountain Dew, Slice, Gatorade &amp; Tropicana, has launched campaigns taking on board leading stars such as Ranbir Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Hrithik Roshan, Mahesh Babu, Kiara Adani and Nayanthara to woo consumers.
"We are excited about our high octane 2024 summer campaigns which have been rolled out over March and April. Our early read is that consumers are responding very positively to all our campaigns," said a PepsiCo India Spokesperson.
FMCG major Dabur India expects a stronger and longer summer would be good for the company's summer-centric products, particularly for its beverages and glucose portfolio.
"We have started building inventory for the same, both at the retail and stockist end," said Dabur India Ltd Head of Sales Anshul Gupta.
Anticipating demand in the summer season, Dabur has expanded capacity at its beverage plant at Pantnagar, in Uttarakhand.
"In addition, a new unit has been set up in Indore for beverages and in Jammu for aerated fruit beverages to gear up for the summer demand," he said.
Coca-Cola India said it is always attuned to market dynamics and consumer preferences and is also ramping up production.
"As the summer season approaches, we are adopting a segmented approach and strategically ramping up distribution to stay connected with our consumers and embrace this time of year," said a Coca-Cola India Spokesperson.

To prevent heat stroke, stay hydrated and drink 8-10 glasses of water daily, use fans or coolers indoors and block sunlight with shades or curtains. Remember to wear, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and light-coloured loose clothing when you step outside. In this scorching heat avoid intense workouts to prevent heat stroke.
Also, refrain from going out on an empty stomach during heat waves to avoid dizziness.

Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration. Aim for at least 8-10 glasses of water daily, and avoid sugary or caffeinated drinks, as they can contribute to dehydration. 
Keep Cool Indoors: Use fans or air conditioning to stay cool indoors. If you don't have access to air conditioning, consider visiting public places like malls or libraries that are air-conditioned. 
Block Sunlight: Close curtains, blinds, or shades to block out direct sunlight and keep your home cooler. 
Wear Appropriate Clothing: Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing to help reflect sunlight and heat. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses can also provide additional protection from the sun. 
Limit Outdoor Activities: Try to limit outdoor activities, especially during the hottest parts of the day (typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.). If you need to be outside, seek shade whenever possible and take frequent breaks in a cool or shaded area.

Amid the unusual rise in temperature across many regions like Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Telangana among others are recording scorching heat with the temperature crossing over 40 degrees Celsius.&nbsp;
The IMD anticipates that the heatwave conditions in Delhi will persist until June 15, with the sudden urge in a heatwave.&nbsp;
Keeping, the extreme heat weather in mind, the Ministry of Health has released the warning signs of heat stroke in children.
According to the health ministry, here are some symptoms of heat stroke.&nbsp;

<li>Excessive irritability</li>
<li>Decreased urine output</li>
<li>Dry oral mucosa and absence of tear/sunken eyes</li>
<li>Lethargy/altered sensorium</li>

The health ministry has also suggested seeking immediate medical attention if you observe any of these symptoms.&nbsp;
To prevent your children from heat stroke here are some measures you can follow

<li>Keep them hydrated with cold fluids and hydration drinks</li>
<li>Feed them with a sufficient amount of seasonal fruits</li>

After days of intense heat in the entire country, the weather department on Wednesday said that the heatwave has ended in entire India.
As per IMD Scientist, &nbsp;RK Jenamani, from Wednesday onwards temperature will decrease and will remain under 40 degree Celsius in most parts of the country, adding that it will remain cloudy.
However, the weather office has issued Orange Alert for hailstorms, storms and rain in Rajasthan, Punjab, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Chandigarh.
Additionally, there is a possibility of heavy rains in the hilly areas for the next 2-3 days. There are chances of storms in East India as well.
