After purported videos of a late-night scuffle between tourists and locals near Himachal Pradesh's Manikaran Sahib went viral, the state's police said the situation is totally peaceful and urged people not to fall prey to fake news and hate speech. It also clarified that all tourists and pilgrims are welcome to the state.
The clarification was issued after reports emerged of tourists reportedly from Punjab creating a ruckus at Manikaran Sahib Gurudwara.&nbsp;
Several videos have gone viral with people seen pelting stones at locals and their houses.
According to Kullu SP Sakshi Verma, a scuffle had broken out between the locals and pilgrims following a verbal spat, however, the situation was brought under control and there was no damage to the gurdwara.

Tourists made a beeline to resorts in Shimla, Manali and Kufri after a fresh snowfall, increasing the occupancy in hotels to almost 70 per cent.
As many as 7,164 vehicles had entered Shimla through Shoghi border in 12 hours till 8 pm on Friday.
The occupancy in hotels is expected to further rise by 10 per cent by the evening, vice president of Shimla Hotel and Restaurant Association Prince Kukreja said.
Manali received 23 cm of snow followed by 16 cm in Khadrala, 16 cm in Shillaro, 12 cm in Kufri, 10 cm in Bharmour, 6 cm each in Shimla and Gonda, 4 cm each in Dalhousie and Kalpa and 3 cm each in Hansa and Keylong.
The meteorological station in Shimla has predicted dry weather in the region for the next four days and cautioned of dense fog and cold waves in low hills from January 14 to 17.
In Uttarakhand, the pilgrimage sites of Badrinath and Gangotri were covered in a blanket of white on Saturday after fresh snowfall.&nbsp;
Meanwhile the Kashmir Valley's connectivity with the rest of the country was restored on Saturday with the Srinagar-Jammu national highway reopening for traffic and flight operations also resuming here a day after a snowfall, officials said.

"The snow from the runway, taxiway and apron has been cleared and the visibility has improved up to 3,000 metres. Flight operations have resumed," an official said.
The Srinagar-Jammu national highway -- the only all-weather road connecting the Valley with the rest of the country -- has been reopened for traffic after the snow was shovelled off, officials said.
While the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir experienced moderate to heavy snowfall on Friday, many other areas, including Srinagar, received light snow.
Meanwhile, night temperatures settled below the freezing point across the Valley. Srinagar recorded a low of minus 0.1 degrees Celsius on Friday night, down from 1 degree Celsius the night before.
Kashmir is currently under the grip of 'Chillai Kalan', the 40-day harshest weather period when the chances of snowfall are maximum and most frequent. Chillai Kalan begins on December 21 and ends on January 30. The cold wave continues even after that with a 20-day-long 'Chillai Khurd' and a 10-day-long 'Chillai Bachha' following it.&nbsp;

Himachal Pradesh govt restores old pension scheme; 1.36 lakh employees to get benefit

The Congress party had promised to take a decision to restore Old Pension Scheme (OPS) at the first meeting of the government and it stood by the promise.

The Himachal Pradesh government on Friday approved restoration of Old Pension Scheme in its first cabinet meeting, calling it a "Lohri gift" to 1.36 lakh employees who currently are under the New Pension Scheme.
The Congress party had promised to take a decision to restore Old Pension Scheme (OPS) at the first meeting of the government and it stood by the promise. &nbsp;The Cabinet also decided to adopt the Election Manifesto of the Congress party as policy document of the Government.
Briefing media persons after the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said: "During her election tour, AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi had told us to promise restoration of OPS and we included it in the Pratigya Patra and fulfilled the promise at very first cabinet meeting".
He further added that the benefit of old pension scheme would be given from today (January 13, 2023) and notification in this regard would be issued soon.
Asserting that the promise to provide Rs 1,500 per month to women in the age bracket of 18 to 60 years would be implemented, the chief minister said that a cabinet sub-committee headed by Agriculture Minister Chander Kumar and Dhani Ram Shandil, Anirudh Singh and Jagat Negi as members has been constituted to prepare a road map for disbursement of Rs 1,500 per month in 30 days.

A 30-year-old tourist from Maharashtra fell to his death during paragliding in the Dobhi area of Kullu district in Himachal Pradesh on Saturday while a 50-year-old South Korean man died after falling 50 feet to the ground while paragliding in Gujarat's Mehsana district, police said on Sunday.&nbsp;
The victim from Maharashtra was identified as Suraj Sanjay Shah (30) of Shirval village in Maharashtra&rsquo;s Satara district. He was visiting Manali with his friends. According to eyewitnesses, the victim fell hundreds of feet possibly due to harness failure during a tandem flight.&nbsp;
Superintendent of Police, Kullu, Gurdev Sharma said on Sunday that police received information that a person had fallen from a paraglider that was flying at a very high altitude in the Dobhi area.
&ldquo;The pilot is safe but the passenger (tourist) succumbed to injuries on the spot," he said "A case of negligence act has been registered under sections 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC Act,&rdquo; the SP said.
Meanwhile, in Gujarat, Shin Byeong Moon was killed after the canopy of his paraglider failed to open properly, because of which he lost balance and fell from a height of about 50 feet, inspector Nikunj Patel of Kadi police station said.
The accident took place at around 5.30 pm on Saturday at a school ground in Visatpura village near Kadi town of the district.

The victim's friends rushed him in a semi-conscious state to a private hospital where he died during treatment, he said.
According to doctors, the man suffered a cardiac arrest due to the shock of falling, the official said.
"Shin was on a trip to Vadodara. He and his Korean friend were visiting their acquaintance, who is into paragliding, at Visatpura village near Kadi town. On Saturday evening, Shin and his Korean friend went paragliding," Patel said.
"The man fell from a height of around 50 feet after the canopy failed to open properly," he said.
A case of accidental death was registered at Kadi police station and the victim's relatives and friends in Vadodara and the Korean Embassy were informed about the incident, he said.
A process was underway to send the man's mortal remains to his home country, the official said.
Due to increasing injuries and deaths during tandem paragliding in Himachal Pradesh, all adventure sports activities in the state were banned by the state's High Court in January 2022.&nbsp;

The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted that there will be no snowfall during Christmas in the tourist destinations of Himachal Pradesh, which came as a huge disappointment for the visitors who arrived in the capital city to witness the picturesque view of the snowfall.
The state weather centre at Shimla has forecasted snowfall in higher reaches of the Kullu, Chamba, Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur districts of the state after a fresh western disturbance (WD) is expected on December 26.
"During the past 24 hours, there were cold wave conditions in the districts of Una, Bilaspur and Hamirpur. There is a fresh Western disturbance on December 26, and there will be rain and snowfall in higher reaches of the state. On 28th and 29th, another western disturbance is approaching and it will impact the districts of Chamba, Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti districts of the state. There is no scope for snowfall during Christmas in tourist destinations of the state. The night temperatures have dropped and in days to come it may increase," Bui Lal, Sr Scientist IMD HP said.

Ahead of the Congress Legislature Party meeting, chief minister hopefuls Pratibha Singh, Mukesh Agnihotri and Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu reached the party office in state capital Shimla along with their supporters, who raised slogans in their favour.
The Congress wrested power from the BJP in the hill state winning 40 of the 68 assembly seats. The polling was held on November 12 and the results were declared Thursday.
Addressing the media after the over two-hour meeting, AICC in-charge for Himachal Pradesh Rajeev Shukla said the one-line resolution was passed unanimously and the party's observers would submit their report to its high command on Saturday.
Refuting that there is factionalism within the Congress party as several leaders were lobbying for the chief minister's post, Shukla said no name came forward for the post of the legislature party leader and the MLAs unanimously decided that the party leadership would take the call.

He said the Congress was happy at the opportunity to form the government in the state and asserted it would do everything to fulfil the 10 guarantees it gave to the people and provide better governance.
Stating that the entire Congress party respects former chief minister Virbhadra Singh, Shukla parried the questions on the possibility of the state getting its first woman chief minister or the top post being represented by a leader from lower Himachal.
Shukla was flanked by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and former chief minister of Haryana Bhupinder Singh Hooda on one side and Pratibha Singh and Sukhu on the other.
Earlier, as the party's central observers Baghel and Hooda worked to find a consensus candidate, a group of supporters of Pratibha Singh, the state party chief and wife of former CM Virbhadra Singh, blocked their vehicle and raised slogans in her support.
It happened as the central observers, along with Shukla, were going to meet Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. The central leaders submitted a list of the party's winning MLAs to the governor and "sought time" to formally stake claim to form the government.

The poor performance of AAP dashed its hope of emerging as a strong third force in the state to challenge the hegemony of BJP and Congress, which have been alternately ruling the state for almost four decades.
AAP which mounted its campaign on a high note a month before the November 12 elections with party convener Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann holding rallies and road shows failed to maintain the tempo till the end as the top party leadership shifted focus to Gujarat.
Absence of a mass leader demoralised the workers and arrest of Satyendar Jain and raids on the premises of Manish Sisodia further dampened the spirits of the candidates.
The party fielded candidates on 67 out of 68 seats &ndash; the exception being Darang assembly constituency - but maintained silence on its Chief Minister face, with no tall leader in the state to carry on the campaign.
"We were expecting to perform well in Paonta Sahib, Indora, and Nalagarh but the results were not favourable. We have just started and there is a long way to go. This is our first election and not the last election," AAP state President Surjit Singh Thakur told the PTI.
He said that the organisation will be strengthened in the state.
None of the much talked about AAP candidates manage to secure a win, including four times MLA and former MP Rajan Sushant, former BJP leader Harmel Dhiman from Kasauli, Manish Thakur from Paonta Sahib, former Congress leader Dharam Pal Chauhan from Solan, and country's youngest sarpanch Jabna Chauhan from Nachan.
In the run up to the campaign, the party had made several promises and came out openly in support of restoration of the Old Pension Scheme for employees in the government sector.
It had also given six guarantees to the voters which were free electricity, a &lsquo;Samman Rashi&rsquo; of Rs 1,000 to women, jobs for youths, quality education and health facilities, and improvement in rural infrastructure

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge congratulated the people of Himachal and credited them and party leaders for the victory of his party.
He said Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra has also helped in this win and thanked former Congress president Sonia Gandhi for her support in these elections. He said it is a long journey ahead and "we will all sit together and discuss the way forward".

Congress leader and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said his party would protect its MLAs from the fear of poaching by the BJP. Baghel was the party's senior observer for Himachal Pradesh.
Himachal Pradesh Congress chief Pratibha Singh congratulated the people of the state for the party's victory in the state.
"Hearty congratulations and best wishes to all the people of Himachal and party workers for the huge victory of the Congress in Himachal assembly elections. This is the victory of all of you," Singh said in a tweet in Hindi.
Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath said, "The beauty of democracy lies not in the power of any party but in the power of the people." AICC in-charge for party affairs in Himachal Pradesh Rajeev Shukla said the party workers did well and thanked all the leaders for campaigning in the elections.
Senior Congress leader and former union minister Anand Sharma hoped the Congress victory in Himachal Pradesh will have ripple effect in states going to poll next year.
He said he was happy that the people of Himachal Pradesh demonstrated wisdom and maturity to give the Congress a decisive victory and a stable majority.
"Delighted over the victory of Congress in my home state Himachal Pradesh. I thank our people, the voters and people of Himachal who have demonstrated wisdom and maturity to give Congress a decisive victory and stable majority," he said.
"The victory will have resonance and a ripple effective in states that will go to elections next year," he also said.
Sharma, a member of the G23 grouping, had campaigned for the party in Himachal assembly polls, but later had lamented that the party did not utilise his services well.
"Equally also congratulating all the Congress workers for their spirited campaign and not overwhelmed by BJP's carpet bombing and unprecedented use of resources. Devbhomi has sent a message, loud and clear -- withdraw the Agniveer scheme and restore the old pension scheme," he said on Twitter.
He said a united congress will provide a government that will take forward the developmental agenda and fulfil the promises made to the people.
Congress general secretary Randeep Surjewala congratulated people party workers.
"Truth and progress have won while lies and deceit have failed," he said in a tweet in Hindi. The Congress has achieved a simple majority in Himachal Pradesh, winning 39 seats and leading in another.

The grand old party surged ahead of the ruling BJP, winning or leading in 39 of 68 assembly seats.
In the latest results and trends available, the Congress won 26 seats and was leading in 13, while the ruling BJP had registered a win on 14 seats and was leading in 12 others.

Three Independents also emerged victorious. The Aam Aadmi Party failed to open its account. Himachal Pradesh has not voted any incumbent government to power since 1985.
The Congress has convened a meeting of all its newly-elected MLAs in Himachal Pradesh in Chandigarh after the declaration of results on Thursday, and the meet was likely to pass a resolution authorising the Congress president to elect the CLP leader.
As trends indicated a comfortable win for the grand old party, AICC in charge of Himachal Pradesh Rajeev Shukla said the party was happy that it is getting an opportunity to form the government in the state and asserted that it will do everything to fulfil the 10 guarantees made to the people of the state and would provide better governance to people.

Pratibha Singh is also in the reckoning. She is the current state unit chief, and wife of ex-CM late Virbhadra Singh. She is not contesting the current polls as she is an MP.
The other names doing the rounds were of Kaul Singh Thakur, an 8-time MLA and a former minister, and Asha Kumari, a former minister and 6-time legislator. But both lost.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, who won for the sixth time from Seraj assembly seat in Mandi district, said he respects the mandate of the people and submitted his resignation to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar.
The vote share difference for the Congress and the BJP was less than one per cent. While the Congress polled 43.9 per cent votes, the vote share for the BJP was 43 per cent.
Anti-incumbency against the ruling BJP government coupled with the issue of price rise with Congress promising restoration of the old pension scheme and providing Rs 1,500 to every adult woman in the state seemed to be the main factors that worked in favour of the grand old party.
With the BJP slogan of 'Raj nahin, riwaaj badlenge' (changing tradition and not the government) being rejected by voters, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi thanked the people of the hill state for the "decisive win" and assured them that every promise made by the party will be fulfilled.
All India Congress Committee (AICC) in charge of Himachal Pradesh Rajeev Shukla hailed Priyanka Gandhi's campaign and leadership, lauding the "hard work" put in by her.
Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma also complimented her for her "spirited" campaign in the state.
He said the Congress victory in Himachal Pradesh will have resonance and ripple effect in poll-bound states next year.&nbsp;
The AAP, which had fielded candidates in 67 seats, failed to make a debut and had a meagre vote share of 1.1 per cent.

Six-time Congress MLA Asha Kumari is trailing in Himachal Pradesh's Dalhousie assembly seat with BJP candidate D S Thakur in the lead, according to the Election Commission.
Kumari is among the chief ministerial probables in case the Congress wins the assembly elections. Dalhousie in Chamba district shot into limelight after veteran Congress leader and former chief minister Virbhadra Singh's aide Harsh Mahajan joined the BJP and queered the pitch for arch rival Kumari, who is seeking re-election from the constituency.
Kumari, who is from the erstwhile royal family of Chamba, was elected for the first time in 1985 and got reelected in 1993, 1998, 2003, 2012 and 201.&nbsp;
Pratibha Singh, wife of former chief minister late Virbhadra Singh, said the Congress is hoping to win at least 40 to 42 seats.
"We are confident that results will be in favour of the Congress and we will form the government," she told reporters.
Virbhadra Singh died last year. His MLA son Vikramaditya contested the November 12 polls from Shimla Rural where he is leading the tally.&nbsp;
Counting of votes for the 68-member assembly began at 8 am and the results of the elections will also reveal whether the BJP's all-out personalised campaign led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to buck the 'alternative government' trend has worked or not.&nbsp;

This year, the BJP is escalating the agenda by promising to implement the Uniform Civil Code in the state if it wins. The party has also said that it would conduct a survey of all Waqf properties to prevent their illegal use. There's also a scheme to spend ₹12,000 crore over 10 years to boost infrastructure and facilities near religious places.

The BJP would also resolve discrepancies in government employee remuneration if it is re-elected.
Healthcare has become a major part of the development rhetoric because of the Covid pandemic. In 2017, the BJP's promises included provision of emergency healthcare services in remote areas and initiation of helicopter ambulance services. While Republic TV P-MARQ predicted that the BJP would get 34-39, Congress 28-33 and AAP 0-1, the Times Now-ETG said the average seats BJP was likely to get was 38 and the Congress 28.
