Students of IITs are facing a significant job placement crisis. Data obtained through Right to Information applications filed by IIT Kanpur alumnus Dheeraj Singh indicates that about 8,000 students across 23 campuses remain unplaced this year.
In 2024, of the 21,500 students registered for placements, only 13,410 secured jobs, leaving 38 percent not getting placed. This is a notable increase from two years ago when 3,400 students, or 19 percent, were unplaced. The older nine IITs are particularly affected, with 16,400 students registering for placements this year, of which 6,050, or 37 percent, are yet to find jobs.
The newer 14 IITs fare slightly worse, with 2,040, or 40 percent, of 5,100 registered students unplaced. As IITs navigate these challenges, addressing the job placement issue remains a critical priority.&nbsp;

 This season, numerous companies have refrained from campus hiring altogether. Even among those who have participated, job offers have ranged from Rs 60,000 to Rs 80,000 as well.

This season, many companies have opted out of campus recruitment entirely. Among those who have engaged, job offers have varied between Rs 60,000 and Rs 80,000.

As more and more layoffs surface in the tech sector, final-year students in IITs are facing a major hurdle of fewer jobs and small packages.&nbsp; A report by the Times of India indicates that final-year students in major IITs are being offered packages ranging between Rs 10-15 lakh annually.&nbsp;
Colleges are contacting multiple companies and NGOs for campus placement as traditional companies that usually hire dozens of freshers have dropped the hiring to one or two students at best.
Students who have been placed are looking for better opportunities through online job portals and with other companies due to relatively lower payscale jobs in placements&nbsp;
The report indicated that placement offices in the colleges are having a tough time attracting more companies and getting a lower pay scale for students.

The decreased job opportunities can be attributed in part to the influence of AI and the absence of major players like FAANG companies. Many IIT-Delhi students are currently utilizing the services provided by the Office of Career Services for employment opportunities. However, 40% of the registered students are still awaiting job offers. The scenario seems more promising for those enrolled in BTech+dual degree programs. Notably, HCL Software extended an offer of Rs 21.9 lakh, Bharat Petroleum Corp proposed an annual package of Rs 19.5 lakh, while TCS and Larsen &amp; Toubro offered annual packages of Rs 9 lakh and Rs 7 lakh respectively to certain IIT-D students.

The placement season for the graduating class of 2024 at IITs seem to be marred by uncertainty amid a significant rise in the number of unplaced students. An RTI application filed by Dheeraj Singh, an alumnus of IIT Kanpur, says that around 45% IIT Madras students may not receive placement offers by the end of the season. Singh, who analyzed the RTI data, anticipates a notable increase in the count of students without placements compared to prior years. The statistics show that out of 2,100 students enrolled for placements, merely 1,150 have clinched offers in either Phase 1 or Phase 2. This leaves a concerning 950 students awaiting employment opportunities. Based on the current trends, Singh estimates that nearly half (approximately 45.2%) of the registered students might not receive placement offers by the end of the season. This raises serious concerns for graduating students and their families, who often rely heavily on securing placements at IITs to kickstart their careers. Earlier, reports suggested that as many as 36% of IIT Bombay students were not getting placements. In response, in a post on X, IIT Bombay says that as per an exit survey conducted among graduating students in 2022-23 only 6.1% of students are still actively seeking employment.

 However, speaking to Hindustan Times, an IIT Bombay official said that for the first time registered students from the computer science and engineering branch, which are usually most in demand, have not seen 100% placement. Meanwhile, as per a report by Times of India, IIT Delhi's 2024 placements have also been lacklustre so far and that students were feeling the pressure.&nbsp;
At IIT Delhi, the placement process occurs in three stages: initial phases in December and February, and the final phase in May. Students without placements explore alternatives like LinkedIn, networking with peers for recommendations, or pursuing further qualifications and exams like CAT for advanced degrees.&nbsp;

IIT placements:&nbsp;The placement season in India's premium engineering colleges Indian Institute of Technology begun on December 1 which will go on till May. Like always, companies from across the globe has hired the over 1,000 IITians from Delhi, Kharagpur, Roorke and BHU campuses.
<h3>IIT Delhi</h3>
The class of 2024 from IIT Delhi has baaged 480 full time jobs including pre-placement offers, with around 450 unique selections by the end of Day 1 of the placement season on Friday. Many students have also received multiple job offers.

The institute in a statement mentioned that more than 360 national and international companies have registered for the hiring process, offering more than 660 job profiles across multiple sectors so far. The top recruiters on Day 1 include Microsoft, Goldman Sachs and Texas Instruments in terms of number of offers given. Around 25 students have received international job offers at locations such as Hong Kong, Japan, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Korea, the UK and the US.
<h3>IIT Roorke</h3>
Meanwhile, IIT Roorkee saw 31 companies offer multiple profiles till Saturday evening. With this, a total of 62 companies have visited the campus since the start of placements on December 1. Companies who made job offers on Day 2 include Accenture, Barclays, Clear (ClearTax), DCM Shriram, Deutsche Bank, Flipkart Internet Pvt. Ltd, Groww, Hilabs, ICICI Lombard, Jaguar Land Rover, Javis, Mastercard, according to a statement shared by the institute. A total of of 440 offers were received.
<h3>IIT Kharagpur</h3>
IIT Kharagpur has bagged over 700 offers including pre placement offers. More than 61 companies made offers at IIT Kharagpur for software, analytics, finance&ndash;banking, consulting and core engineering roles.
Apple, Arthur D.Little, Da Vinci, Capital One, DE Shaw, EXL Services, Glean, Google, Graviton, Microsoft, McKinney, Quantbox, Databricks, Square point and TSM, Palo Alto were among the companies that participated in the campus placements.&nbsp;
IIT Kharagpur in a statement mentioned that the students received more than 19 overseas offers with six students being offered Rs 1 crore-plus packages on the first day of the placement drive.&nbsp;
<h3>IIT-BHU</h3>
IIT-BHU saw 230 offers along with around 307 PPOs from 68 companies. The packages offered to IIT-BHU students ranged between Rs 12.5 lakh and Rs 1.68 crore. Companies that came to the campus include, Google, Flipkart, Deutsche Bank, Tata Capital, Deloitte among others
<h3>Hiring slowsdown</h3>
However, the macroeconomic challenges have reduced the offers made compared to last year. As per Times of India, the number of participating companies at IIT-Bombay are almost the same as last year&mdash;around 350. The number of job announcement forms(JAFs), however, are fewer as compared to last year.
IIT Bombay saw a marginal increase in the number of pre-placement offers (PPOs) accepted - from 194 last year to 200.

Explaining the issue, an IIT Delhi professor said the students may be finding non-IIT options to be more attractive post-pandemic.

First IIT outside India to come up in Tanzania

The first IIT campus outside India will come up in Tanzania's Zanzibar, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed for the setting up of a campus of IIT Madras in Zanzibar, which is a Tanzanian archipelago off the coast of East Africa.
The agreement was inked on Wednesday in the presence of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Zanzibar's President Hussein Ali Mwinyi. Jaishakar is on a visit to Tanzania.
"The first IIT campus to be set up outside India will be in Zanzibar," the MEA said. It said an MoU was signed between India's education ministry, IIT Madras and Zanzibar's Ministry of education and vocational training.
"This campus is reflective of the longstanding friendship between India and Tanzania and a reminder of the focus India places on building people-to-people ties across Africa and the Global South," the MEA said.
"Recognising the strategic partnership between Tanzania and India, the relationship of educational partnership has been formalised by signing the document which provides the framework for the parties to detail out the setting up of the proposed campus of IIT Madras in Zanzibar-Tanzania, with plans to launch programmes in October 2023," the MEA said.&nbsp;

Two research students at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) were allegedly hit by a speeding car on the night on 17 January 2023.
