IIT Bombay, often hailed as India&rsquo;s top tech institute, has just concluded its placements for the 2024 batch. And data reveals that the institute was unable to place all graduates who were seeking jobs this year.
But that&rsquo;s not all. There&rsquo;s also been a sharp drop in the lowest packages offered &mdash; from ₹6 lakh per annum last year to just ₹4 lakh per annum now. Ten students who were offered jobs at the lowest end of the spectrum accepted those positions.
However, it&rsquo;s not all doom and gloom. There&rsquo;s a silver lining too: the average annual package for the 2024 batch rose to 23.5 lakh rupees per annum &ndash; a 7.7 percent increase over last year.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has fined students ₹1.2 lakh each for staging a play called "Raahovan" during the institute's annual performing arts festival. The play, loosely based on the Indian epic 'Ramayana', faced massive backlash on social media for being derogatory to Lord Ram and disrespectful of Hindu culture.
Raahovan was performed on March 31 by students from various departments and years. Videos of the play went viral, showing the audience cheering during a conversation between the characters of Sita and Lakshman. Critics claimed the play showed these characters in a negative light and mocked Hindu culture. Complaints were filed, leading to the formation of a disciplinary committee at IIT Bombay.
After thorough deliberation, the committee decided to impose fines and other disciplinary measures. Graduating students involved in the play were fined Rs 1.2 lakh each, a sum equivalent to a semester's fee at the institute. Additionally, these students will not receive any recognition in the gymkhana awards. Junior students faced a fine of Rs 40,000 each and were banned from hostel facilities.
The institute issued the penalty notice on June 4, following a disciplinary committee meeting on May 8. The fined students were required to pay the amount by July 20, 2024, to the office of the Dean of Student Affairs. Any breach of this penalty would result in further sanctions.

The global economic headwinds seem to have hit the 2024 placement season at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay. As per Hindustan Times, 712 of around 2,000 students registered for the 2024 placements in IIT-Bombay are yet to be placed. The 712 students translate to about 36% of all those who have registered.
<h3>Lacklustre placement season</h3>
The placement season in IIT Bombay began in December and the job season will end in May. Last year too, 32.8% of the registered students remained unplaced. Only 1,485 out of the 2,209 registered students in the institute secured jobs last year.
IIT- Bombay alumnus and founder of Global IIT Alumni Support Group Dheeraj Singh while talking to Hindustan Times attributed the "global economic meltdown" behind the slow placement drive.&nbsp;

The report quoted a placement cell official and mentioned that it was a struggle &ldquo;to invite companies to the campus compared to last year due to the global economic meltdown&rdquo;.
&ldquo;Most companies were unable to accept salary packages pre-decided by the institute. It took many rounds of negotiations before they agreed to come over,&rdquo; the official told Hindustan Times.
The Hindustan Times report further noted that a large chunk of the 380 companies that visisted the campus were from domestic market. Usually international firms outnumber domestic companies.
&ldquo;For the first time, registered students from the computer science and engineering branch, which are most in demand, have not seen 100% placement among those registered,&rdquo; the official told Hindustan Times.
The report quoted another professor from the institute and said that it is focussing on big packages to maintain the high mark of average salary packages.

However, it is not focusing on the salary bagged by an average student &ndash; this has created a system where despite getting offer letters, most students reject them later and choose other ways to seek employment,&rdquo; said a professor from the institute.
<h3>Support system for students</h3>
&nbsp;Global IIT Alumni Support Group Dheeraj Singh also pointed out the need to create a support system for unplaced students who have high levels of anxiety and stress staring at the bleak job scenario.
"The institute hardly has any placement support for approximately 700-750 students left unplaced in phase two&rdquo;, Said Singh. This is a disheartening state of affairs in IIT-Bombay, which is ranked the third engineering college in India (as per NIRF). The administration should inform unplaced students how they are going to help them find a job,&rdquo; he added.
The report also quoted a final year student who spoke the anxiety he experienced during the interview.
&ldquo;I prepared hard but was unable to tackle real-time pressure and failed to get a job. Some company representatives informed us they cut down hirings by 50% compared to last year,&rdquo; the Student told Hindustan Times.&nbsp;

Students have raised the issue of food discrimination at the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) after &ldquo;vegetarians only&rdquo; posters were put up on the walls of a canteen in one of the hostels, a student representative said on Sunday.
Posters stating &ldquo;vegetarians only are allowed to sit here&rdquo; were put up on the walls of the canteen of hostel 12 at the prestigious institution last week, and a photograph of the same went viral on social media.
An official from the institute claimed that while they had found out about the posters, they did not know who had put them up in the canteen.
There are no fixed seats for people consuming different categories of food and the institute is unaware about who put up the posters, he said.
Representatives of the student collective Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle (APPSC) condemned the incident and tore the posters.

Nandan Nilekani, co-founder and chairman of Infosys and the founding chairman of UIDAI, has donated Rs 315 crore to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay.
This builds on his previous grants of Rs 85 crore to his alma mater. The donation will help foster world-class infrastructure, stimulate research in emerging areas of engineering and technology, and nurture a deep tech startup ecosystem at the famed institution.
The donation, which is one of the largest donations made by an alumnus in the country, will serve as the anchor for IIT-B's vision to become a global leader among engineering and technology institutes and contribute significantly towards nation-building, a joint statement from the institute and Nilekani said on Tuesday.
The tech leader joined IIT-B in 1973 for a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.
"IIT-Bombay has been a cornerstone in my life, shaping my formative years and laying the foundation for my journey. As I celebrate 50 years of my association with this esteemed institution, I am grateful to give forward and contribute to its future. This donation is more than just a financial contribution; it is a tribute to the place that has given me so much and a commitment to the students who will shape our world tomorrow," Nilekani said.
The donation will significantly accelerate the growth of IIT-B and will firmly set it on a path of global leadership, said IIT-B director Prof Subhasis Chaudhuri.
Nilekani's contribution will catalyse philanthropic contributions towards advancing research &amp; development at universities in the country, he added.
Over the past 50 years, Nilekani has stayed connected with the institute in multiple roles. He served on the board of the IIT-B Heritage Foundation for a decade from 1999 and was on the board of governors from 2005 to 2011.
His initial contribution of Rs 85 crore was instrumental in constructing new hostels, co-financing the school of information technology, and establishing the country's first university incubator, thereby significantly boosting the startup ecosystem.
He was awarded the distinguished alumnus award in 1999, followed by an honorary doctorate in 2019 as part of the 57th convocation of the institution.
IIT-B's strategic plans for the coming decade includes setting up world-class centres of excellence in strategic areas like artificial intelligence, green energy, quantum computing and others, nurturing a deep tech startup ecosystem, and providing best-in-class research, living, and academic facilities to the students and the faculty.
The plan envisages fundraising of about USD 500 million over the next five years and Nilekani's anchor contribution of USD 38.5 million will help the institute kick-start its plans and inspire others to join this transformative initiative.

He also told his mother during telephonic conversations that the behaviour of fellow students changed when they learned about his caste, it claimed.
The statement of Solnaki's mother is part of the chargesheet filed by the city police on Tuesday before a special court for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The chargesheet named fellow student Arman Khatri who is out on bail after being arrested for allegedly abetting the suicide.

The 12-member commission formed to probe the alleged suicide has concluded that Solanki took the extreme step due to his 'deteriorating academic performance'.
The committee headed by Professor Nand Kishore of the Chemistry department submitted its interim report on March 2 and a copy has also been shared with the Union government.
Solanki, a first-year chemical engineering student from Ahmedabad, allegedly died by suicide on February 12, a day after his semester exams ended.
Solanki&rsquo;s family alleged he was subjected to caste-based discrimination on campus which drove him to suicide.

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has formed a panel to conduct a &ldquo;parallel&rdquo; probe into the death of a first-year B.Tech student amid allegations of caste bias and has urged its students to come forward if they have &ldquo;relevant&rdquo; information.
The panel is headed by Professor Nand Kishore and also has SC/ST Students Cell members, including faculty and students, a few student mentor coordinators and the in-charge chief medical officer of IIT Bombay hospital, said a statement by institute Director Subhasis Chaudhuri on Saturday.
Darshan Solanki (18), who belonged to a Scheduled Caste community, allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the seventh floor of a hostel building on the Powai campus of the IIT on February 12, but his family suspects foul play in his death and said he faced discrimination.
The Powai police are investigating the matter and have also visited Solanki&rsquo;s home in Ahmedabad.
Highlighting that Prof. Nand Kishore was the chief vigilance officer of IIT Bombay till recently and is experienced &ldquo;in these matters&rdquo;, Chaudhari said that the committee is actively meeting everyone who might have relevant information.
&ldquo;If you have any information that you believe may be relevant, please reach out to the committee by either meeting any of the committee members, or by emailing Prof. Nand Kishore or to the Powai Police,&rdquo; Chaudhari appealed through the statement.
IIT Bombay and police are actively investigating the &ldquo;environment, incidents, and reasons behind Darshan's tragic death&rdquo;, it said. The police have interviewed a large number of people, and also taken Solanki&rsquo;s phone and laptop for forensic analysis, Chaudhari said.

The family of the 18-year-old IIT Bombay student who died allegedly by suicide has claimed that he was discriminated against on the basis of caste on the campus.
Some of his friends stopped talking to him when they learnt that Darshan Solanki was a Dalit, NDTV reported quoting Solanki's sister.
The IIT Bombay however has rejected charges of caste bias in the institute.
Solanki, a first year student of BTech (Chemical) died allegedly after jumping off the seventh floor of a hostel building on the Powai campus of the premier institute on 12 February.&nbsp;
The Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle, a student group, had called Solanki's death an &ldquo;institutional murder&rdquo;.
However, the institute on Tuesday said it takes utmost precautions to make the campus as inclusive as possible and it has zero tolerance for any discrimination by faculty.

A student group at IIT Bombay has alleged that a first-year Dalit student was driven to end his life due to discrimination against SC students on campus.&nbsp;
In a series of tweets, Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle alleged that Darshan Solanki&rsquo;s death was an &lsquo;institutional murder&rsquo; due to &lsquo;harassment&rsquo; and &lsquo;lack of representation of faculty and counsellors from the marginalised&rsquo;.
According to the police, 18-year-old Solanki allegedly died by suicide by jumping off the seventh floor of a hostel building located on the campus on February 12.&nbsp;
No suicide note has been recovered and the police are probing a case of accidental death, PTI reported.
The deceased, who hailed from Ahmedabad, was a first-year student of the B.Tech (Chemical) course.
The incident came to light after security guards on the campus spotted the youth lying in a pool of blood, a police official said.

The institute reportedly said, "The majority of our students realise that the government cannot keep subsidising them beyond a point. IIT Bombay is trying to convince the remaining few students to stop the stir by talking with them."
The fee hike was approved in 2020, but implementation was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, according to news reports.
Students began their protest after a 35% hike in postgraduate programmes was proposed in July 2022. Increased hostel fees, and tuition fees for PhD and MTech students are reportedly major points of contention. Protesting students have demanded a rollback of the hike.
