The 2025 QS Sustainability Rankings evaluated 1,740 universities across 107 countries, a significant increase from the previous year.

The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2025 for sustainability have been released, showcasing global leaders in environmental and social impact. Among Indian institutions, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has secured the top spot, ranking 171st globally with an impressive 81.1 percentile in the Environmental Sustainability metric.
Top Indian Universities in QS Sustainability Rankings
IIT Kharagpur follows in second place among Indian institutions, securing the 202nd rank globally, while IIT Bombay claims the third spot with a global rank of 234. Here&rsquo;s a detailed look at the rankings of Indian universities:

A total of 78 Indian universities featured in this year&rsquo;s rankings, with nine of the top 10 institutions showing an improvement and 21 universities entering the list for the first time.
Global Leaders in Sustainability
The University of Toronto has claimed the top global position, excelling in Environmental Sustainability (91), Environmental Education (99.7), and Environmental Research (98.5). It is followed by ETH Zurich in second place. Lund University (Sweden) and the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) share the third spot globally.

Methodology and Observations
The QS Sustainability Rankings evaluate universities based on their impact in three categories: Environmental Impact, Social Impact, and Governance. The assessment incorporates indicators such as health and wellbeing, equality, employability, and operational sustainability.
Ben Sowter, Vice President at QS, lauded the performance of Indian universities, highlighting that 34 institutions improved their rankings this year, demonstrating their growing commitment to sustainability initiatives. However, he also noted that Indian universities could enhance their scores in areas like health, equality, and education impact.
Jessica Turner, CEO of QS, emphasized the importance of sustainability to prospective students. "Nine out of ten students identify sustainability as important, and 40% actively research a university's sustainability strategies during the application process," she said, underscoring the growing demand for environmentally conscious education.

We often hear about those few IIT graduates bagging packages over 1 crore, even 2 crore rupees. But the reality for many is starkly different. According to recent reports from Deloitte and TeamLease, the class of 2024 from the IITs is seeing a drop in annual pay, now ranging between 15-16 lakh rupees.This isn&rsquo;t just about salaries.
There&rsquo;s also a noticeable decrease in the number of students being recruited. This raises concerns about the current state of affairs at India&rsquo;s premier educational institutes.As per a reply to an RTI query filed by &nbsp;IIT Kanpur alumnus Dheeraj Singh, 22% of IIT Delhi students registered for placements between 2019 and 2023 remained unemployed.
In a LinkedIn post in May, the IIT Kanpur alumnus and placements mentor Singh shared three years' placement data based on 23 RTIs or Right to Information, annual reports, media reports, and student insights.In 2024, out of 21,500 students registered at IITs, 13,410 secured placements, leaving 8,090 still seeking jobs.
This marked a significant increase in the number of unplaced students, nearly double that of 2023. In 2023, 20,000 students registered for campus placements, with 15,830 obtaining jobs at an average annual package of 17.1 lakh rupees, while 4,170 remained unplaced.
In the previous year, that is, 2022, over 3,000 out of 17,900 registered students were unable to secure placements through IIT campus facilities. Singh noted on LinkedIn that the median CTC for that year was 17.2 lakh rupees per annum.
The job scarcity affecting top engineering graduates has led to immediate worries about oversupply, skills mismatches, and unrealistic salary expectations.
This has also sparked AI-led existential concerns for a talent pool that's been a cornerstone of India's software services industry, contributing 7% to the country&rsquo;s GDP.

The Ministry of Education and Abu Dhabi's Education and Knowledge Department (ADEK) have signed an agreement for setting up the campus of IIT Delhi in the gulf country.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ongoing visit to the UAE. The MoU is part of the "IITs go global" campaign. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi is the second IIT to announce setting up an offshore campus. Last week, IIT Madras had signed an MoU for setting up its campus in Tanzania's Zanzibar.
"MoU for establishment of @iitdelhi campus in Abu Dhabi in the presence of Hon. PM @narendramodiji unfolds a new chapter in internationalisation of India&rsquo;s education," Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan tweeted.
"An exemplar of #NewIndia's innovation and expertise, the IIT Delhi campus in UAE will be an edifice of India and UAE friendship. It will set a brand new template for leveraging the power of knowledge for both mutual prosperity and global good as envisioned in NEP," he added.
While the Masters courses will be offered at the Abu Dhabi campus from January next year, the Bachelor-level programmes will be offered from September.

A 30-year-old IIT Delhi student was killed and his friend was injured after they were allegedly hit by a car outside the campus here, police said on Wednesday. &nbsp;The 31-year-old driver of the vehicle has been nabbed, they said.
Ashraf Nawaz Khan and Ankur Shukla (29), both PhD students, went to a restaurant in SDA market on Tuesday night and were crossing the road after having dinner when the car hit them, a senior police officer said. &nbsp;Khan died during treatment at the Safdarjung hospital while Shukla is admitted to the Max hospital in Saket with a fractured leg, he said. &nbsp;The car, which hit the duo, was found abandoned at some distance, police said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Manoj C said, "We have apprehended driver Avihant Sherawat, resident of Mahipalpur, and further interrogation is on."
