The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted further drops, predicting a minimum temperature of 4 degrees Celsius on Thursday. On Wednesday, Delhi recorded a minimum of 4.9 degrees Celsius, highlighting the intense cold wave conditions sweeping the region.
The chill has extended beyond the capital, affecting Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and other northern states, while Jammu and Kashmir experienced fresh snowfall on Wednesday, intensifying the winter weather.
The regional meteorological center in Delhi issued a forecast for Thursday, anticipating a "mainly clear sky with cold wave conditions at isolated places." It also warned of smog and mist in the morning and evening, with temperatures expected to range between 23 degrees Celsius (maximum) and 4 degrees Celsius (minimum).
According to a report by PTI, this December's early days have recorded minimum temperatures below 5 degrees Celsius for the first time in 14 years. IMD data reveals that the last comparable minimum temperature during this period was on December 6, 1987, when Delhi saw a record low of 4.1 degrees Celsius.

Cold Wave Forecast for Delhi For December 12, the IMD predicts cold wave conditions at isolated places with predominant surface winds from the northwest, starting at less than 8 kmph in the morning and increasing to 16 kmph in the afternoon. Evening and night will likely see reduced wind speeds and persistent smog or mist.
For December 13, similar conditions are expected, with northwest winds gradually increasing to 10-12 kmph during the afternoon before easing in the evening. The city is likely to see mist or smog during both morning and night.

IMD's Cold Wave Warnings The IMD forecasts that minimum temperatures in northwest and central India will remain consistent over the next four to five days, keeping the cold wave's grip firmly intact across the region.

Official data showed that at least 24 places in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh recorded maximum temperatures of 45 degrees Celsius or above on Wednesday.
Barmer in Rajasthan recorded a high of 48 degrees Celsius, the highest in the country this season so far. Churu logged a high of 47.4 degrees, Phalodi 47.8 degrees, and Jaisalmer 47.2 degrees.
Maximum temperatures settled at 45 degrees in Madhya Pradesh's Ratlam, 44.8 degrees in Maharashtra's Akola, 47.7 degrees in Haryana's Sirsa, 46.6 degrees in Punjab's Bhatinda, 46.1 degrees in Gujarat's Kandla, and 45 degrees in Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh.
Conditions are set to deteriorate further with the India Meteorological Department predicting a rise of three to four degrees in northwest India over the next few days.
The Met department issued a red warning for Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and west Uttar Pradesh, emphasising a "very high likelihood" of heat illness and heatstroke in all ages.
It said warm night conditions could further exacerbate heat-related stress in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Rajasthan over the next four days.
High night temperatures are considered dangerous because the body doesn't get a chance to cool down. Increasing nighttime heat is more common in cities because of the urban heat island effect, in which metro areas are significantly hotter than their surroundings.
The punishing heat is straining power grids and drying up water bodies, triggering drought-like conditions in parts of the country.
According to the Central Water Commission, water storage in 150 major reservoirs in India plunged to their lowest level in five years last week, exacerbating water shortages in many states and significantly affecting hydropower generation.
Reports said Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan suffered a heatstroke during a T20 match in Gujarat's Ahmedabad, which reeled from a deadly combination of high heat and humidity.
In April, Union minister Nitin Gadkari fainted due to heat while addressing an election rally in Maharashtra, while a TV host fell unconscious during a live broadcast in West Bengal.
Severe and frequent heat waves are further burdening low-income households in the country, which often have poor access to water and cooling, and testing the endurance of outdoor workers toiling in the searing sun, forcing them to take frequent breaks.
Experts say outdoor workers, the elderly, and children are at higher risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. According to the World Health Organization, more than 1,66,000 people died as a result of heatwaves between 1998 and 2017.
India reported 3,812 deaths due to heatwaves between 2015 and 2022, with Andhra Pradesh alone logging 2,419 fatalities, the Union health ministry told Parliament in July last year.
People are less productive during hot weather, and children struggle to learn.
According to a World Bank report, India could account for 34 million of the projected 80 million global job losses from heat stress-associated productivity decline by 2030.
With 75 per cent of workers in India experiencing heat-related stress, lost labour from rising heat and humidity could result in a loss of up to 4.5 percent of India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) (equivalent to approximately USD 150-250 billion) by the end of this decade, according to a report by the McKinsey Global Institute.&nbsp;

The searing heat pushed the city's peak power demand to its highest for May, while the Delhi government directed the schools that have not closed for summer vacations to do so with immediate effect.
Delhi has been seeing a steady rise in temperature in recent days, culminating in the highest temperature recorded this summer on Sunday when the overall temperature reached 44.4 degrees Celsius. Saturday's temperature was 43.6 degrees Celsius, up from 42.5 degrees Celsius on Friday.
On Monday the national capital experienced the second-highest maximum temperature, 3.7 degrees above normal.
Najafgarh recorded a high of 47.4 degrees Celsius on Monday, a day after the southwest Delhi area had recorded 47.8 degrees Celsius -- the highest in the country so far this season.
Mungeshpur recorded 47.1 degrees, Aya Nagar recorded 45.7 degrees, Pusa recorded 46.1 degrees, Pitampura recorded 46.6 degrees, and Palam recorded 45.2 degrees.
The crippling heat is especially straining low-income households, which often have poor access to water and cooling, and testing the endurance of people who have to venture outside for work and other chores.
In a circular, the Directorate of Education in Delhi said all the schools were directed to observe summer vacation from May 11 to June 30 for this academic year.
"...all the govt. schools are closed wef 11.05.24. However, it has been observed that some of the govt. aided and unaided recognised private schools are still open during ongoing severe heat waves.
"Therefore, all the heads of govt. aided and unaided recognised private schools of Delhi are advised to close the schools for summer vacation with immediate effect," read the circular.

India is set to experience extreme heat during the April to June period, with the central and the western peninsular parts expected to face the worst impact, the IMD said on Monday as the country prepares for the seven-phase general elections starting April 19.
Addressing a press conference, Union Minister for Earth Sciences Kiren Rijiju said India is anticipated to experience extreme weather conditions in the upcoming two-and-a-half months and this coincides with the general elections in which around a billion people are expected to exercise their franchise.
"It is going to be very challenging for all of us. Since we are the most populous country in the world and face extreme weather conditions, it makes it absolutely necessary for India to prepare in advance," he said.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said the anticipated increase in outdoor activities during the 2024 general elections could heighten public vulnerability to heat waves.
With greater exposure, there's an elevated risk of heatwave-related health issues among the electorate and election staff, he said.
The IMD chief said above-normal maximum temperatures are likely over most parts of the country during the April-June period, with a high probability over central and western peninsular India.
Normal to below-normal maximum temperatures are likely over some parts of the western Himalayan region, northeastern states and north Odisha, he said.
Above-normal heatwave days are likely over most parts in the plains during April-June. Ten to 20 days of heat wave are expected in different parts of the country against a normal of four to eight days, he added.
Mohapatra said Gujarat, central Maharashtra, north Karnataka, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, north Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh are likely to experience the worst impact of heat waves.
Though El Nino conditions -- the periodic warming of waters in the central Pacific Ocean -- are weakening, these will continue during April and May, according to the IMD chief.
"It is in agreement with the forecast of above-normal maximum temperatures and heatwave conditions in India," he added. The prevailing El Nino conditions fuelled record temperatures and extreme events the world over, with 2023 being the warmest on record. El Nino is associated with unusually dry and warm conditions over southeast Asia.
La Nina conditions -- associated with bountiful monsoon rain in India -- are likely to set in by the second half of the monsoon season, the IMD said.
The Met office said above-normal maximum temperatures are likely over most parts of the country in April, with a high probability over central south India.
Normal to below-normal maximum temperatures are likely over some parts of the western Himalayan region and northeastern states in April, the IMD said.
Above-normal heatwave days are likely over many areas in central India and the adjoining areas of the northern plains and south India in April, it said.
"Two to eight days of heat wave are expected in these regions against a normal of one to three days," Mohapatra said.
Gujarat, Maharashtra, north Karnataka, Odisha, west Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh are predicted to experience the worst impact of heat waves in April.
The IMD said the country is "most likely" to gauge normal rainfall (88-112 per cent of the long-period average of 39.2 mm) in April.
"Normal to above-normal rainfall is likely over most parts of the northwest, and some parts of central and north peninsular India. Below-normal rainfall is likely over the east and the west coasts, parts of east, northeast and south peninsular India," Mohapatra said.
Elevated temperatures pose significant risks, especially for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children and those with pre-existing health conditions as they are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke, the IMD said.
Lok Sabha polls in India will take place in seven phases between April 19 and June 1.
