Notably, the government has elevated the salary requirement for individuals seeking to reside in the UK. This pivotal adjustment, part of a broader reform agenda, marks a critical shift in the eligibility criteria for those aspiring to live and work in the country. The recent measures are anticipated to significantly reduce migration to the UK, affecting an estimated 300,000 individuals who would no longer meet the criteria for entry.
Expressing his determination to address what he referred to as an excessively high level of net migration, Sunak heralded these changes as historic. "We've just announced the biggest ever cut in net migration. No Prime Minister has done this before in history," Sunak remarked in a social media update.
The pivotal modifications outlined by Sunak's government encompass a spectrum of stringent regulations. These include restrictions on dependents entering the UK, a substantial increase in minimum salary requirements for overseas workers and sponsors, and tighter controls on the Health and Care visa, notably impacting care workers and their families.
Moreover, the crackdown extends to labor strategies, with plans to abolish salary discounts for shortage occupations and the implementation of an Immigration Salary List, aligned with elevated salary thresholds. Simultaneously, measures addressing student dependents seek to curb the influx, potentially impacting around 153,000 visas granted to dependents of sponsored students in the year ending September 2023.
The government asserts that these measures are designed to underscore the principle that individuals relocating to the UK must be self-sufficient, economically contributing, and not reliant on state support. However, Labour's home affairs spokesperson, Yvette Cooper, rebuked the Conservatives, labeling their actions as a "chaotic panic" response to immigration.

The number of Indians illegally crossing over into the United Kingdom across the English Channel has increased sharply to 683 last year from 67 in 2021, data from the British government has shown.
The figure, according to the latest UK Home Office report showed that no Indians had crossed over into Britain in 2018 and 2019.
However, this saw an increase in 2020 when 64 Indians crossed over illegally in small boats followed by a small rise to 67 in 2021.&nbsp;

The UK has a returns agreement with India under the Migration and Mobility Partnership (MMP), something which was referred to by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in Parliament last week.

The Biden administration said Tuesday that it will generally deny asylum to migrants who show up at the US southern border without first seeking protection in a country they passed through, mirroring an attempt by the Trump administration that never took effect because it was blocked in court.
The measure, while stopping short of a total ban, imposes severe limitations on asylum for any nationality except Mexicans, who don't have to travel through a third country to reach the U.S.
The measure is almost certain to face legal challenges. President Donald Trump pursued a similar ban in 2019 but a federal appeals court prevented it from taking effect.
The Biden administration rule proposed Tuesday has to first go through a 30-day public comment period before it can be formally adopted. If adopted it would remain in place for two years.
Administration officials expect the rule will take effect when a pandemic-era rule that denies asylum on grounds of preventing the spread of COVID-19 ends. That rule, known as Title 42 authority, is set to expire May 11 but has been delayed twice by legal challenges from Republican-led states.
The Homeland Security and Justice Departments argued that surging numbers of migrants left them little choice. They anticipate illegal crossings to climb to between 11,000 and 13,000 a day if no action is taken after Title 42 ends; that's even higher than the 8,600 daily crossings in mid-December as anticipation spread among migrants and smugglers that Title 42 was about to end. At the last minute the Supreme Court kept it in place.
The proposed rule establishes &ldquo;a rebuttable presumption of asylum ineligibility&rdquo; for anyone who passes through another country to reach the U.S. border with Mexico without first seeking protection there, according to a notice in the Federal Register. Exceptions will be made for people with an &ldquo;acute medical emergency,&rdquo; &ldquo;imminent and extreme threat&rdquo; of violent crimes such as murder, rape or kidnapping, being a victim of human trafficking or &ldquo;other extremely compelling circumstances.&rdquo; Children travelling alone will also be exempted, according to the rule.
The rule largely calls on prospective migrants to follow legal pathways to apply for asylum such as using the CBP One app, through which prospective migrants can schedule an appointment to apply to appear at a border entry point to apply for asylum. The administration portrayed these efforts as a way to protect migrants from the dangerous journeys as they travel north to the U.S. and allow the U.S. border entry points to manage the migrant flows in a &ldquo;safe and efficient manner.&rdquo; But critics have said the app has been beset by technical problems and its not clear how many appointments are available every day.
U.S. officials insist the measure proposed Tuesday is different from Trump's, largely because there is room for exemptions and because the Biden administration has made other legal pathways available, particularly humanitarian parole for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, Venezuelans and Ukrainians.

In a major move that will benefit thousands of Indian professionals and other foreigners in Canada, the North American country will expand its work permit eligibility to the family members of Open Work Permit (OWP) holders from next year to address acute labour shortages.
The OWP allows foreign nationals to work in Canada for any employer and any job. Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Sean Fraser on Friday announced that his department is extending work permits to family members of temporary foreign workers.
"Canada is expanding work permits for family members! Starting in 2023, spouses and children of a principal applicant will be eligible to work in Canada," Fraser tweeted.
"Expanding the eligibility for work permits to family members accompanying the principal applicant to Canada will help address labour shortages by assisting employers in finding the workers they need," he said in a press statement.
Employers across the country continue to identify a lack of workers as their biggest obstacle, Fraser said.
The new measure, he said, will help employers find the workers they need to fill their labour gaps by expanding work permits to family members at all skill levels, resulting in family members of over 200,000 foreign workers being able to work in Canada.
Prior to this announcement, spouses were only eligible for a work permit if the principal applicant was working in a high-skill occupation.
The new measure aims to improve the emotional well-being, physical health and financial stability of workers by keeping families together. As a result, it is expected that the worker will better integrate into their overall work environment and community, Fraser said.
Starting in January 2023, through a temporary two-year measure, Canada will expand eligibility to work in the country to spouses and working-age children through a phased approach for workers at all skill levels, the statement said.
The measure will be implemented in 3 phases to ensure its successful implementation.&nbsp;

A 20-year-old Indian student was killed after he was hit and dragged by a pickup truck while crossing a road on a cycle here, according to a media report. Though the police have not yet identified the victim, news website cbc.ca in a report published on Friday quoted the victim's cousin Parveen Saini as saying that Kartik Saini came to Canada from India in August 2021. Parveen Saini spoke from Karnal, Haryana, where their family is from, the report said. The family is hoping that Kartik's body will be sent to India as soon as possible for proper burial, Parveen said. Sheridan College has confirmed that Kartik was a student there, the report said. According to police the fatal collision happened at the intersection of Yonge Street and St Clair Avenue at about 4:30 pm on Wednesday evening. The cyclist died after being struck and dragged by a pickup truck in midtown, it said in a press release on Thursday.

Immigrants with prior work experience were paid more within one year of arrival while those with no 'work-ex' had a median pay of CA$39,300 in 2019.
Canada granted permanent residency to 401,000 foreigners in 2021, though there is no official data on how many were Indians past trends would suggest nearly 40% of the pool would be from the subcontinent.
