The government is also advancing plans to extend social security benefits to gig and platform workers. A comprehensive scheme under finalization may include health coverage, provident funds, and financial aid for disabilities. A committee of stakeholders is developing a framework to operationalize these benefits, as outlined in the Code on Social Security, 2020, which formally recognized gig workers and their welfare needs.
Addressing employment trends, the Labour Secretary noted a sharp drop in unemployment rates from 6% in 2017 to 3.2% today. She also highlighted growth in workforce participation, with the Labour Force Participation Rate and Worker Participation Ratio climbing steadily to 58%, reflecting increased employment levels.

The Supreme Court of India will hear petitions challenging the constitutionality of the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991, which prohibits altering the religious character of worship places to their pre-1947 state and bars related legal proceedings.

A special bench, consisting of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justices PV Sanjay Kumar and KV Vishwanathan, will deliberate on the matter at 3:30 pm today.

The Supreme Court of India is scheduled to hear petitions challenging the constitutionality of the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991, which prohibits the alteration of the religious character of places of worship to their pre-August 15, 1947 state. This law also disallows any legal proceedings aimed at reclaiming or altering such sites.
A special bench, consisting of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justices PV Sanjay Kumar and KV Vishwanathan, will deliberate on the matter at 3:30 pm today. The petitions argue that the Act infringes upon the rights of Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, and Sikhs, preventing them from reclaiming places of worship and pilgrimage that were destroyed or altered by invaders.
Notable individuals, including Maharaja Kumari Krishna Priya of the Kashi Royal Family, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, former MP Chintamani Malviya, and religious leaders such as Swami Jeetendranand Saraswati, have filed petitions against the Act. They contend that it violates the principles of secularism and deprives them of their right to manage, maintain, and restore sacred sites.
The petitioners also criticize specific provisions within the law, including Sections 2, 3, and 4, which they claim restrict religious practices and the right to judicial recourse. Section 3 bars the conversion of places of worship, while Section 4 prevents the initiation of lawsuits that seek to change the religious character of any place of worship from that of August 15, 1947.
The Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, along with other Muslim organizations such as the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, has opposed the petitions, arguing that allowing these lawsuits would lead to widespread litigation targeting mosques across the country. The Anjuman Intezamia Masjid, responsible for managing the Gyanvapi mosque, has also intervened in the case to urge the dismissal of these pleas.
One of the petitioners raised concerns about the Act's exclusion of certain religious sites, claiming inconsistency in how the law treats different religious communities. The petitions also argue that the law unjustly limits the rights of Hindu, Jain, Buddhist, and Sikh communities while allowing Muslim communities to reclaim religious properties through separate provisions, such as those in the Waqf Act.
In essence, the petitioners contend that the Places of Worship Act not only violates several fundamental rights under the Constitution, including the rights to religious freedom, cultural heritage, and judicial remedy, but it also perpetuates an arbitrary and unjust status quo that prevents religious communities from reclaiming or managing their sacred spaces.

The Nepal government replaced the old map used in all the official documents with the new map despite India&rsquo;s objection.

The economic advisor to Nepal's President Ram Chandra Paudel has resigned after his controversial remarks on the government&rsquo;s decision to issue new hundred-rupee notes with a map that includes three Indian territories, a move already rejected by India.
The President approved Chiranjivi Nepal's resignation on Sunday, according to a press release issued by the Office of the President.
&ldquo;I made the remarks as an economist and a former governor of the central bank but some news media have twisted it in an attempt to unnecessarily drag the respectful institution of the president into controversy, which made me feel sad,&rdquo; Chiranjivi Nepal PTI on Monday.
The new map includes territories such as Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura.
India maintains Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura belong to it.
&ldquo;I, therefore, tendered my resignation taking the moral obligation of the attempt made by some online news portals which have tried to drag the president into controversy based on my statement,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;My intention in the statement was just to make people aware as a conscious citizen that such acts could create practical problems to the country and the people at a time when discussions are underway at diplomatic levels (on the map),&rdquo; he clarified.
A Cabinet meeting last week decided to replace the old map with the new one while printing new notes of Rs 100.
CPN-UML chairman and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had publicly criticised Chiranjivi Nepal for his remarks.
Earlier, a group of civil society leaders had demanded the removal of Chiranjivi Nepal over his remarks against the government's decision to print new hundred-rupee notes with the map of Nepal as per the amended Constitution.
They argued that he had gone against national interest and breached decorum while speaking to the national and international media on the matter.
Nepal's government unveiled its new political map with the inclusion of Lipulek, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura areas within its territory in May 2020 during the government led by Oli. It was later endorsed by the Parliament unanimously. After that, the government replaced the old map used in all the official documents with the new map despite India&rsquo;s objection.
&ldquo;This artificial enlargement of claims is not based on historical fact or evidence and is not tenable. It is also violative of our current understanding to hold talks on outstanding boundary issues," India's External Affairs Ministry said at that time.
External Affairs Minister S Jayashankar last week expressed discontent over the Nepal government's decision to issue the new notes.
Jaishankar said that it is not going to change the situation on the ground.

India ranks third among countries with the worst air quality, behind Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Bihar's Begusarai emerged as the world's most polluted metropolitan area while Delhi was identified as the capital city with the poorest air quality, according to a new report.
With an average annual PM2.5 concentration of 54.4 micrograms per cubic metre, India had the third worst air quality out of 134 countries in 2023 after Bangladesh (79.9 micrograms per cubic metre) and Pakistan (73.7 micrograms per cubic metre), according to the World Air Quality Report 2023 by Swiss organisation IQAir.
In 2022, India was ranked as the eighth most polluted country with an average PM2.5 concentration of 53.3 micrograms per cubic metre.
Begusarai stood out as the most polluted metropolitan area globally with an average PM2.5 concentration of 118.9 micrograms per cubic metre. The city did not even figure in the 2022 rankings.
Delhi's PM2.5 levels worsened from 89.1 micrograms per cubic metre in 2022 to 92.7 micrograms per cubic metre in 2023.
The national capital was ranked the most polluted capital city in the world four times on the trot starting 2018.
It is estimated that 1.36 billion people in India experience PM2.5 concentrations exceeding the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommended annual guideline level of 5 micrograms per cubic metre, the report said.
Also, 1.33 billion people, 96 per cent of the Indian population, experience PM2.5 levels more than seven times the WHO annual PM2.5 guideline. This trend is reflected in city-level data, with more than 66 per cent of the country's cities reporting annual averages greater than 35 micrograms per cubic metre.
IQAir said the data utilised to create this report was aggregated from the global distribution of more than 30,000 regulatory air quality monitoring stations and low-cost air quality sensors operated by research institutions, governmental bodies, universities and educational facilities, non-profit non-governmental organisations, private companies and citizen scientists.
The 2022 World Air Quality Report included data from 7,323 locations in 131 countries, regions and territories. In 2023, those numbers have grown to include 7,812 locations in 134 countries, regions and territories.
Causing an estimated one in every nine deaths worldwide, air pollution is the greatest environmental threat to human health.
According to the WHO, air pollution is responsible for an estimated seven million premature deaths worldwide every year.
Exposure to PM2.5 air pollution leads to and exacerbates numerous health conditions, including but not limited to asthma, cancer, stroke and lung disease.
Exposure to elevated levels of fine particles can impair cognitive development in children, lead to mental health issues, and complicate existing illnesses, including diabetes.&nbsp;

Jaishankar said that resolving the tension sooner and not later will be good for both India and China

&nbsp;In the backdrop of the nearly-four-year border row with China in eastern Ladakh, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday said the "tension" seen during this period has "not served either of us well".
He also asserted that India remains committed to finding a "fair and reasonable outcome" but one that is respectful of agreements and recognises the Line of Actual Control.
During a panel discussion at an event, the minister said India "never closed doors to talking to Pakistan" but the terrorism issue should be "fair, square at the centre of the conversation".
Jaishankar, who recently returned from an official visit to South Korea and Japan, shared his thoughts on a range of issues, from the changing nature of diplomacy to the evolving world order, during the 'Express Adda' in New Delhi.
Later, he also took questions from a section of the audience that included diplomats, businessmen, academics, entrepreneurs, journalists and foreign policy enthusiasts.
Asked about his views on "offers made from the Chinese side in the past" to resolve the border issue, and whether there was any scenario where he could think that this could actually be resolved, the minister said, "Any country involved in a boundary dispute negotiating, it has to believe &hellip; there has to be a solution."
Questioned on if the current dispensation will get "more empowered with more seats in (Parliament) to talk on the issue", the Union minister interjected and said, "To me, the territory of India and the fairness of a boundary solution has nothing to do with how many seats &hellip; Either it's a good deal or not a good deal. The issue today is not whether you have a political majority or not. It is whether you have a fair deal on the table that is the issue."
Jaishankar, a former foreign secretary, also responded to a query from an audience member on the India-China relationship.
"I think it is in our common interest that we should not have that many forces on the Line of Actual Control. I think it is is our common interest that we should observe agreements that we have signed. And, I believe that it is not just in common interest, I believe it is in China's interest as well. This tension that we have seen for the last four years has not served either of us well," he said.
"So, the sooner we resolve it, I genuinely believe it is good for both of us. I am still very much committed to finding a fair, reasonable outcome. But one which is respectful of agreements, recognises the Line of Actual Control, doesn't seek to change the status quo. That, I think, will be good for both of us," the minister added.
The eastern Ladakh border standoff erupted on May 5, 2020, following a violent clash in the Pangong Lake area.
Ties between the two countries nose-dived significantly following the clash in the Galwan Valley in June 2020 that marked the most serious military conflict between the two sides in decades.
India and China recently held a fresh round of high-level military talks to resolve the border row that witnessed both sides agreeing to maintain "peace and tranquillity" on the ground but there was no indication of any breakthrough.

At least 5 students with Indian roots have been found dead in the US since January 2024.

India&rsquo;s external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal doused fire on claims that India-origin students were being targeted in the US. The MEA representative said that the five killings reported this year were not interconnected.
&ldquo;There are 5 Indian students who have died...that also includes students from India diaspora. 2 are India nationals and rest 3 are of Indian origin but US nationals,&rdquo; Jaiswal said in a press conference on February 8.
The MEA spokesperson also clarified that there was no &ldquo;foul play&rdquo; in the killing of Shreyas Reddy, who was found dead in Ohio&rsquo;s Cincinnati. However, India still awaits the final medical reports provided by US authorities.
Last month, 25-year-old Indian student Vivek Saini was hammered to death by a homeless drug addict in Georgia. Syed Mazahir Ali, pursuing a Masters in IT, was brutally attacked by unidentified men near his house in Chicago.

Uttarakhand Assembly passed the Uniform Civil Code Bill on February 7, becoming the first Indian state to approve such legislation. As the bill now moves to the Governor for final approval, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami celebrated the Assembly&rsquo;s decision.
The passing of the UCC bill, which refers to a common set of laws for all Indian citizens, is likely to push other BJP-ruled states to adopt similar legislation.
&ldquo;This law is of equality, uniformity and equal rights. There were many doubts regarding this but the two-day discussion in the assembly clarified everything. This law is not against anyone,&rdquo; CM Dhami said in a press conference after the bill was cleared by the Assembly.
Once the Bill gets the governor's consent, Uttarakhand will become the first state after independence to get a common law on marriage, divorce, land, property and inheritance for all citizens, irrespective of their religion.
Speaking on the Bill before its passage, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said &ldquo;it is not an ordinary legislation. The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will create equal laws for men and women across all faiths and will help create a non-partisan and non-discriminatory society,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;It will especially protect the rights of women and put an end to their exploitation. It fulfills a commitment we had made to the people of the state in the run-up to the 2022 assembly polls," the chief minister added.

In a bid to enhance security along the Myanmar boundary, India will erect a fence along the porous border.

India has decided to fence the entire 1,643-km-long India-Myanmar border, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Tuesday.
The move could virtually put an end to the Free Movement Regime (FMR) prevalent along the porous border.
The FMR allows people residing close to the India-Myanmar border to venture 16 km into each other's territory without any document.
The 1,643-km-long India-Myanmar border, which passes through Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, currently has FMR. It was introduced in 2018 as part of India's Act East policy.
Fencing along the border has been a persistent demand of the Imphal Valley-based Meitei groups which have been alleging that tribal militants often enter into India through the porous border.
The Meitei groups also allege that narcotics are being smuggled into India taking advantage of the unfenced international border.
In a post on X, Shah said the Narendra Modi government is committed to building impenetrable borders.
"It has decided to construct a fence along the entire 1643-kilometer-long Indo-Myanmar border. To facilitate better surveillance, a patrol track along the border will also be paved," he said.
The home minister said a 10-km stretch of the border in Moreh in Manipur has already been fenced.
Furthermore, two pilot projects of fencing through a hybrid surveillance system are under execution.
"They will fence a stretch of 1 km each in Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. Additionally, fence works covering approx 20 km in Manipur have also been approved, and the work will start soon," he said.
Manipur shares around 390 km of border with Myanmar, but only about 10 km has been fenced so far. In July last year, the state government shared data that around 700 illegal immigrants entered the state.
Besides, Mizoram has seen an influx of anti-Junta rebels in thousands since the military coup in Myanmar on February 1, 2021. According to government estimates, several thousand refugees are living in different parts of Mizoram since the coup.
Mizoram shares a 510-km-long border with Myanmar.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh had also said that several persons from Myanmar tried to enter into his state but returned on seeing the presence of a large number of security personnel.
Apart from Manipur and Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh shares a 520-km border with Myanmar and Nagaland shares a 215-km border with the country.
On February 3, after meeting Shah, the Manipur chief minister said the Centre is set to take "some important decisions" in the interests of the people of the state.
Singh had also held a meeting with senior officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs at the North Block and had "a productive discussion on the strategic measures undertaken for fostering peace in Manipur".
Manipur has been witnessing sporadic violence.
Ethnic violence broke out in Manipur on May 3, 2023 after a tribal solidarity march was organised in the hill districts to protest against the majority Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status. More than 200 people have been killed in the violence.
While a section of Kukis has demanded a separate administration or separation from the Manipur government, the Meitei groups are dead against it and warned legislators against any such design and asked them to foil such attempts.
Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur's population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley, while tribals, which include Nagas and Kukis, constitute 40 per cent and reside mainly in the hill districts.
The rest belong to other communities.
Shah paid a four-day visit to the state as part of his efforts to calm down the warring communities. However, intermittent violence continued.

India on Tuesday advised its citizens not to travel to Myanmar's Rakhine state in view of deteriorating security situation.
In an advisory, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) asked Indian citizens who are already in Rakhine state to leave it immediately.
"In view of the deteriorating security situation, disruption of means of telecommunications, including landlines, and severe scarcity of essential commodities, all Indian citizens are advised not to travel to the Rakhine State of Myanmar," it said.
"Those Indian citizens who are already in Rakhine State are advised to leave the State immediately," the MEA said.&nbsp;

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday met his Maldivian counterpart Moosa Zameer and the two leaders had a "frank conversation" on ties between the two countries.
The meeting between Jaishankar and Zameer in the Ugandan capital city of Kampala came amid an unease in the Maldives' bilateral ties with India.
Jaishankar is in Kampala to represent India at the two-day summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) beginning Friday.
"Met Maldives FM @MoosaZameer today in Kampala. A frank conversation on India-Maldives ties. Also discussed NAM related issues," Jaishankar posted on X, sharing a photograph of the meeting.
In a post on X, Zameer said it was a pleasure to meet Jaishankar in the margins of the NAM Summit.
"We exchanged views on the ongoing high-level discussions on the withdrawal of Indian military personnel, as well as expediting the completion of ongoing development projects in the Maldives, and cooperation within SAARC and NAM," he wrote.
"We are committed to further strengthening and expanding our cooperation," the Maldivian minister wrote. He also posted a photograph of the meeting.
The India-Maldives ties came under some stress as Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, widely seen as a pro-China leader, maintained after assuming charge as the president in November that he will keep his election promise of evicting Indian military personnel from his country.
A row erupted on social media earlier this month when a minister and some other leaders in the Maldives used derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he posted a video of him on a pristine beach in Lakshadweep.
Muizzu suspended the three ministers after their social media postings, which stirred concern in India and calls for a boycott by Indian tourists who ranked highest in numbers followed by Russia. Chinese tourists figured third.
The Maldives is one of India's key maritime neighbours in the Indian Ocean Region and the overall bilateral ties including in areas of defence and security witnessed an upward trajectory under the previous government in Male.
In May last year, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited the Maldives during which he handed over a fast patrol vessel and a landing craft to the island nation.
In August, Prime Minister Modi and then Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih kick-started the India-funded Greater Male connectivity project, billed as the largest infrastructure initiative in the island nation.
Under the Greater Male Connectivity Project (GMCP), a 6.74-km-long bridge and causeway link will be built to connect the capital city Male with adjoining islands of Villingli, Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi.
The Maldives is also one of the biggest beneficiaries of India's Neighbourhood First policy.&nbsp;

Reacting to Iran bombing terror bases in Pakistan, India said it "understands" actions that nations take in their self defence.&nbsp; &nbsp;

India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that it "understands" Iran's actions against terror groups based in Pakistan, and said that it holds an uncompromising position of zero tolerance towards terrorism.&nbsp;
India's reaction came hours after Tehran confirmed that it bombed militant group Jaish al-Adl's bases in Balochistan, the region bordering both countries.&nbsp;
"This is a matter between Iran and Pakistan. Insofar as India is concerned, we have an uncompromising position of zero tolerance towards terrorism. We understand actions that countries take in their self defence,&rdquo; MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a statement.
 The airstrikes were vehemently condemned by Pakistan, calling it a &ldquo;blatant violation" of its airspace. It also claimed the missiles also killed two children. Tuesday's strike hit a village in the vast south-western border province of Balochistan.&nbsp;
In a statement, Pakistan said it &ldquo;reserves the right to respond&rdquo; to what it called an illegal and unprovoked attack.
&ldquo;The responsibility for the consequences will lie squarely with Iran,&rdquo; it added.
However, Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, speaking in Davos, insisted that they only targeted Iranian terrorists on the soil of Pakistan.
Meanwhile, China has urged Pakistan and Iran to show "restraint" and "avoid actions that would lead to an escalation of tension".&nbsp;
Foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said that Beijing saw the countries as "close neighbours".

India on Thursday expressed&nbsp;shock and grief over the twin blasts that rocked the Iranian city of Kermin which left more than 100 dead and over 200 injured.
Taking to social media X, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal conveyed India's solidarity with the government and people of Iran.
"We are shocked and saddened on the terrible bombings in the Kerman City of Iran. At this difficult time, we express our solidarity with the government and people of Iran. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and with the wounded," he posted.
Explosions happened on death anniversary of Soleimani
The explosions occurred on Wednesday when the government was commemorating commander Qassem Soleimani who was killed by a US drone in 2020.&nbsp;
The attacks took place in the southeastern city of Kerman along the road leading to Kerman&rsquo;s Martyrs&rsquo; Cemetery, &nbsp;around 800 kilometers from the capital Tehran city.
Iranian state television reported the two blasts occurred over a gap of 20 minutes during a crowded fourth-anniversary event at the cemetery where Soleimani is buried, reports Reuters news agency.
An unnamed official told state news agency IRNA that "two explosive devices planted along the road leading to Kerman's Martyrs' Cemetery were detonated remotely by terrorists".
Iran vows revenge
While no one has claimed responsibility, Iranian authorities vowed revenge for the "terror" attacks.
&ldquo;The evil and criminal enemies of the Iranian nation once again created a disaster and martyred a large number of dear people in Kerman,&rdquo; Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in a statement. &ldquo;This disaster will have a harsh response, God willing.&rdquo;
Iran&rsquo;s President Ebrahim Raisi, too, vowed harsh punishment for the culprits. &ldquo;Undoubtedly, the perpetrators &hellip; of this cowardly act will soon be identified and punished for their heinous act by the capable security and law enforcement forces. The enemies of the nation should know that such actions can never disrupt the solid determination of the Iranian nation.&rdquo;
&nbsp;Is Israel involved?
Though Iran has often blamed Israel for any attacks on crowded places or individual people within its borders, Washington on Wednesday said that there was no indication that Tel Aviv was behind the blasts.
&ldquo;We don&rsquo;t have any more detail in terms of how it happened or who might be responsible for it,&rdquo; John Kirby, a White House spokesperson for national security, told reporters.
&ldquo;We have no indication at this time at all that Israel was involved in any way whatsoever,&rdquo; he added.

India has cautioned Indians seeking employment abroad against fake job offers

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday called upon Indians seeking employment abroad to not fall prey to fake job offers and urged them to use safe and legal services of registered recruiting agents.
In an advisory, the MEA also warned all unregistered agencies promising jobs abroad not to involve in overseas recruitment saying such activities are in violation of Emigration Act 1983 and amount to human trafficking, which is a punishable criminal offence.
It has been noticed that there has been a huge rise in the number of overseas job seekers being cheated by unregistered recruitment agents by fake job offers and also overcharging to the tune of Rs 2 to 5 lakh, it said.
The MEA said these unregistered and illegal agents operate without obtaining a licence from the ministry which is mandatory for any recruitment abroad.
"It is reported that many illegal agents operate through Facebook, WhatsApp, text message and other such mediums. These agencies provide little or no details of their whereabouts and contacts," it said.
"They usually communicate only through WhatsApp, making it difficult to ascertain the location and identity of the caller and genuineness of the job offer," it added in the advisory.
The MEA also cautioned that such agents lure workers to work in difficult and life threatening conditions and that such cases are being reported for recruitment to work in several East European countries, some of the Gulf countries, Central Asian countries, Israel, Canada, Myanmar and Lao People's Democratic Republic.
A valid job offer comes along with an employment contract duly signed by foreign employer, recruitment agent and the emigrant worker, the MEA said.
It said the employment contract must mention terms and conditions of the job being offered and the salary and other emoluments, adding valid job offers must allow the workers to emigrate on strength of employment or work visa or other similar visa except tourist visa.
Normally, reputed foreign employers provide for the cost of airfare, boarding and lodging and insurance cover, it mentioned.
The MEA urged people seeking jobs abroad to use the safe and legal services of registered recruiting agents (RA) only.
"All registered RAs are issued a license number which is prominently displayed in their office premises and in their advertisements, including newspapers and social media," it said.
The MEA said prospective emigrants should cross check the genuineness of the RA by visiting the government website www.emigrate.gov.in and click the link "List of active RA".
According to the Emigration Act 1983, no recruiting agent shall collect from the prospective emigrant the service charges more than Rs 30,000 plus GST (18%), and the recruiting agent shall issue a receipt to the emigrant for the amount collected by it in this regard.
"Going abroad through any other channel of recruitment involves serious risk of being defrauded of money, not landing in the promised job and difficult living conditions abroad," the MEA said in the advisory.
"All unregistered agencies are being warned not to involve in overseas recruitment activities. Such activities are in violation of Emigration Act 1983 and amount to human trafficking, which is a punishable criminal offence," it said.

The United States has charged an Indian man over an alleged plot to assassinate an Indian-origin American citizen who advocates for a separate Sikh state.
The indictment filed by the United States in the New York district states that Nikhil Gupta has been charged with 'murder-for-hire' with the prosecutors saying he was being directed by an employee of the Indian govt.&nbsp;
'Murder-for-hire' charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, and conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.&nbsp;
The indictment has not named the US citizen but The Financial Times, citing unnamed sources, last week reported that US authorities thwarted a plot to assassinate banned Sikhs for Justice&rsquo;s Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, and issued a warning to the Indian government over concerns it was involved in the plot.
