Having won the toss and opting to field first, team India restricted Zimbabwe to a below-average score of 115 and Shubman Gill led side looked as firm favourites at the halfway stage.
But it was Sikandar Raza's side that kept Team India on the toes throughout the chase by picking up wickets at regular intervals.&nbsp;
Abhishek Sharma was dismissed in the first over and by the end of the powerplay, Team India had lost four crucial wickets and from there on, India seemed to be playing a catching-up game throughout the innings.
Skipper Shubman Gill held on to one end while wickets kept tumbling from the other before the skipper too was dismissed after scoring 31 runs in 29 deliveries.
As soon as Shubman Gill lost his wicket, The Indian chase looked in all sorts of trouble but, Washington Sundar played some attacking shots in the 18th over but Zimbabwe's Muzarabani gave away just 2 runs in the penultimate over. India needed 16 in the final over but some death bowling and some fine fielding took the hosts over the line. Team India was all out for 102 runs which is also their sixth-lowest total in T20 International history.
India's playing XI consisted of three debutants. Abhishek Sharma, Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel. But the trio failed to leave a mark in their maiden T20I as Abhishek Sharma departed on a duck whereas Riyan Parag scored just 2 runs before losing his wicket. Dhruv Jurel, on the other hand, was impressive behind the stumps but he too failed to contribute with the bat and scored 7 runs in 14 deliveries.
Earlier, Ravi Bishnoi was the pick of the bowlers from the Indian team as the spinner took 4 wickets and gave away 13 runs in his 4-over spell and he was well supported by Washington Sundar, who took 2 wickets.
The 2nd T20 match of the 5-match series will take place tomorrow and it will be interesting to see if skipper Shubman Gill decides to go with the same playing XI or makes some changes.&nbsp;

A new-look Indian T20 team would embark on a journey of self-discovery without their constant talismans, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, hoping to unearth their mainstays for the future in a five-match series against Zimbabwe starting here on Saturday.
Even as the euphoria of T20 World Cup triumph sweeps through the length and breadth of India, Shubman Gill, who was a reserve in that squad, will hit a refresh button along with a bunch of IPL performers.
All the fresh faces are expected to make their international debut during the series scheduled to be played entirely in the Zimbabwean capital.
Two young men, who are lined up for debut could be Punjab's Abhishek Sharma, who had a stupendous IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad and the young Assamese lad Riyan Parag, who has given ample demonstration of his capabilities as a competent T20 batter. Both of them tick all the boxes for this format.
While over the past few years, Rohit and Kohli have skipped a lot of bilateral series, especially in the shortest format, their international retirement from the format is bound to be felt more strongly.
The skills and quality that the two modern greats brought to the table will be hard to replicate but as it is the order of nature, the old guard has to make way for the new one.
Zimbabwe certainly isn't the most formidable opposition but in the T20 format, the gulf between sides is comparatively lesser than the other two traditional forms of the game.
The hosts, led by the gutsy Sikandar Raza, who played for Punjab Kings in the IPL recently, could prove to be a handful on nippy afternoons at the Harare Sports Club where the ball will jag around during the afternoon starts.
Some solid performances in this series will keep these youngsters in contention for the future when the first-team players of the world champion side are back on national duty.
Shivam Dube, Sanju Samson, and Yashasvi Jaiswal will be available from the third match onwards and some of the young men will only get a couple of games to prove their mettle.
In future, the likes of T20 captain-in-waiting Hardik Pandya, his likely deputy Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, and Kuldeep Yadav will also be back playing the format and there won't be too many vacancies in the playing eleven. From now till the 2026 T20 World Cup in India, the national team will play 34 games in the shortest format.
While skipper Gill is expected to open, one needs to see whether his best friend Abhishek gets his maiden India cap or the seasoned CSK skipper and captain of the Asian Games gold medal-winning team Ruturaj Gaikwad ends up being the chosen one.
In case Abhishek opens, Gaikwad could come in at No.3 or swap positions with the Punjab southpaw. Parag's chances of a debut are brighter compared to Abhishek's as he can bat at No. 4 in the first match, a slot he made his own for the Royals.
Rinku Singh, the designated finisher of the Indian T20 team for years to come, is expected to arrive at No. 5 in this new look line-up while one among Jitesh Sharma or Dhruv Jurel will bat at No. 6 while donning the big gloves.
If one looks at the selection pattern, Jurel was the second keeper behind Sanju Samson for this series and Jitesh was a late entrant because of the unavailability of the World Cup squad members.
Hence Jurel, who made an impressive Test debut against England is likely to play in the first two games before Samson arrives.
In the bowling department, Avesh Khan and Khaleel Ahmed, the two standbys during the T20 World Cup are certainties and Mukesh Kumar, who is a very steady death bowler could be the third seamer pipping Harshit Rana, who is a better slogger with the willow.
Washington Sundar with his all-round abilities will hold his place till Dube arrives while leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi is expected to play all games.

The opposition INDIA bloc has emerged in the lead in Uttar Pradesh, with 43 of the 80 Lok Sabha seats from the state.
Six of these MPs are facing criminal charges, putting them at the risk of losing their Parliament membership down the road. If any of them are convicted and attract a jail term of more than two years, they would stand disqualified from the House.&nbsp;&nbsp;
<h3>Afzal Ansari (Samajwadi Party) - Ghazipur</h3>
Afzal Ansari won the Ghazipur seat. He has already been sentenced to four years in prison in a Gangster Act case. However, the conviction was later stayed by the Allahabad High Court, allowing him to contest polls. Hearing of the case will continue in July when the court reopens after summer vacations.
<h3>Dharmendra Yadav (Samajwadi Party) - Azamgarh</h3>
Dharmendra Yadav won the Azamgarh seat. He has four cases pending against him, including a forgery case.&nbsp;
<h3>Rambhual Nishad (Samajwadi Party) - Sultanpur</h3>
Rambhual Nishad defeated BJP's Maneka Gandhi in Sultanpur. He has eight cases registered against him, including one under the Gangsters Act.&nbsp;
<h3>Virendra Singh (Samajwadi Party) - Chandauli</h3>
Virendra Singh won the Chandauli seat by defeating former minister Mahendra Nath Pandey. He is facing 3 criminal cases including a house trespassing case
<h3>Babu Singh Kushwaha (Samajwadi Party) - Jaunpur</h3>
Babu Singh Kushwaha ended his 10-year exile in politics by winning the Jaunpur seat. He is facing several cases related to the NRHM scam under the Mayawati regime when he was a minister. Charges have been framed in eight of the 25 cases filed against him.
<h3>Imran Masood (Congress) - Saharanpur</h3>
Imran Masood won from Saharanpur with 44.6% votes. Eight cases are registered against him, including one related to money laundering. Charges have been framed against him in two cases.
<h3>Chandrashekhar Azad (Azad Samaj Party) - Nagina</h3>
Chandrashekhar Azad registered his maiden win in the Lok Sabha polls from Nagina. He promised to support the INDIA bloc from outside, when neccessary.
He has over 30 cases registered against him, but has not been convicted in any so far.&nbsp;
There are several BJP leaders too from Uttar Pradesh who won the polls and are facing criminal charges. Some of them are Mohd Azam Khan, his son Abdullah Azam of SP, Khaboo Tiwari, Vikram Saini, Ram Dular Gond, Kuldeep Sengar and Ashok Chandel.&nbsp;

The one common factor connecting the Israel-Hamas conflict and the Russia-Ukraine war is how the warring countries have been prolifically using 'kamikaze' drones or loitering aerial munitions (LAM), changing the game of modern warfare.&nbsp;
Sensing the importance of being equipped with such killer drones, India has been working with local manufacturers to come up with indigenously developed kamikaze drones.
According to a report by The Week magazine, Bengaluru-based aerospace company Kadet Defence Systems in collaboration with the Defence Research Development Organisation has developed India's first Loitering Aerial Munitions for the armed forces under a unique Development cum Production Partner (DCPP) model.
Multiple versions of the drones are being developed to meet different operational requirements with weight varying from 15 kg to 120 kg with explosives payloads of 2 to 40 kg, according to The Week.
The biggest version of the drone can loiter for about 12 hours.
&ldquo;The LAM systems encompass a diverse array of cutting-edge technologies, including Canister Aerial Loitering Munition (CALM), Combat UAVs with stand-off capabilities for munition release, Tactical VTOL UAVs, and a versatile mix of systems capable of swarming and manned-unmanned teaming operations,&rdquo; a release from the Kadet Defence Systems said.&nbsp;
While the company has already inked a contract for the delivery of over 50 such systems in 2024, it can scale up production to deliver an estimated 5,000 within the next 2-3 years.
The market size of LAMs in India is estimated to be around Rs 15,000 crore.

"Had I not been serious, I would not have rushed to Rahul Gandhi's residence in Delhi at 6 am. We were willing to have an alliance with the Congress in Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal, and despite state Congress president Adhir Ranjan Choudhury's barbs at our party for months we did not react for a long time," he said.
"We gave Congress time till December but we cannot wait indefinitely as we have to make preparations. Till December 31, 2023, not a single spokesperson of our party, including Mamata Banerjee, reacted to what Choudhury was saying," he added.
Banerjee, the MP of Diamond Harbour, said the seat-sharing talks failed because of the state Congress's belligerence.&nbsp;

India on Wednesday successfully flight tested the supersonic missile-assisted release of torpedo (SMART) system from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast, a defence official said.
The system was launched around 8.30 am from the ground mobile launcher.
Several state-of-the-art mechanisms such as symmetric separation, ejection and velocity control have been validated in this test, the defence official said.
SMART is a next-generation missile-based light-weight torpedo delivery system, designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to enhance the anti-submarine warfare capability of the Indian Navy far beyond the conventional range of lightweight torpedo, he added.

According to a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, India was the fourth largest military spender in the world in 2023 with the expenditure reaching $83.6 billion. The report further stated that India was spending 4.2% higher than the previous year.&nbsp;
The report published on Monday said that despite India's military spending rising by 4.2% from 2022, it was mainly a result of growing personnel and operations costs, which made up almost 80% of the total military budget in 2023.
The SIPRI report reflects India's defence spending going towards pension payouts. According to the Interim Union Budget 2024-25, Rs 1.41 lakh crore of the total Rs 6.21 lakh crore went towards pensions. &nbsp;

The US military expenditure has seen an increase given its direct support to Ukraine on the one hand and Israel on the other.
China, the world&rsquo;s second-largest military spender, allocated an estimated $296 billion to its military in 2023, an increase of 6% over the previous year, according to SIPRI data.
The US and China together accounted for around half of global military spending last year.&nbsp;
The report mentions that the total global military expenditure increased by 6.8% in real terms. The reasons for rise in global military spending has been attributed to the ongoing war in Ukraine and escalating geopolitical tensions in Asia and Oceania and the Middle East.&nbsp;
This, it said, resulted in Europe, Asia, Oceania and the Middle East becoming some of the highest-spending regions in the world.

Elon Musk on January said that India not having a permanent seat in the UNSC was 'absurd.' He said that nations with excess power don't want to relinquish it.
"At some point, there needs to be a revision of the UN bodies. Problem is that those with excess power don't want to give it up. India not having a permanent seat on the Security Council, despite being the most populous country on Earth, is absurd. Africa collectively should also have a permanent seat imo (sic)."
India has long sought a permanent seat on the Security Council to better represent the interests of the developing world. The nation's quest has gained momentum with support from the international community.
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is composed of 15 member states, including five permanent members with veto power and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms.

In a rejoinder to the Irish Times newspaper which made critical remarks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the envoy termed the editorial "highly biased and prejudiced" and praised the Modi government's fight against corruption.
The editorial titled "Modi tightens his grip" mentioned the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and tax cases against opposition leaders while predicting a third term for Modi.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Most recent was the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal&hellip; over an alleged &lsquo;scam&rsquo; involving alcohol sales&hellip; And Congress, India&rsquo;s largest Opposition party, has seen the tax authority freeze millions in its bank accounts, crippling its ability to campaign,&rdquo; the editorial said.
Contesting the claims, the Indian embassy said it cast aspersions on the Prime Minister, democracy, law enforcement institutions, and the "Hindu-majority" people of India.
"The fight against the deeply entrenched ecosystem of corruption (created by the 55-year rule, including first 30 years, by a single dynastic party in India) is a major factor behind Mr Modi's ever-growing popularity. The remarks sparked an angry reaction from Congress, with its communications in charge Jairam Ramesh questioning the ambassador's "unprofessional and disgraceful behaviour".
"Defending the Government of India is one thing and is to be expected. But to attack Opposition parties openly in this manner like a party apparatchik is not expected from an Ambassador even if he be a political appointment. This is unprofessional and disgraceful behaviour on his part-but is par for the Modi course I guess," he said.
