Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge sharply criticized Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Wednesday, calling him the "biggest spokesperson" for the government. In response to the opposition&rsquo;s motion to remove Dhankhar, Kharge stated that the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha was the primary cause of disruptions in the upper house. He emphasized that the position of Vice President, historically seen as impartial, had never been subject to such a motion since 1952, as previous officeholders had always been unbiased and adhered to the rules of the House.
Kharge accused Dhankhar of deviating from the tradition of neutrality, arguing that his actions reflected more politics than procedure. He further accused the Rajya Sabha Chairman of stifling important discussions raised by the opposition, claiming that Dhankhar regularly prevented opposition leaders from speaking and deliberately blocked debates on critical issues.
The Congress leader also alleged that Dhankhar was more loyal to the ruling BJP than to the Constitution, describing him as a spokesperson for the government instead of an impartial chair. Kharge remarked that the Vice President seemed more focused on advancing his political agenda than on upholding the dignity of the House.

The INDIA bloc claims the BJP-led Mahayuti coalition&rsquo;s overwhelming victory&mdash;securing 235 of the 288 seats&mdash;was influenced by tampered EVMs. The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance managed only 46 seats in the assembly.
Sharad Pawar has been meeting party leaders who suffered defeats in the election, fueling the bloc's determination to challenge the results. During the meeting, Arvind Kejriwal also raised concerns about voter lists in Delhi, where assembly elections are scheduled early next year.

Yadav&rsquo;s endorsement comes after the Trinamool Congress intensified its push for Banerjee&rsquo;s leadership, with MP Kirti Azad calling her the most suitable candidate due to her consistent victories over the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal.
Banerjee, who has expressed interest in heading the alliance, also emphasized her readiness to lead. &ldquo;If given the opportunity, I would ensure its smooth functioning. I don&rsquo;t want to go outside West Bengal, but I can run it from here,&rdquo; Banerjee said in an interview on December 6.
The leadership question has gained prominence following the opposition bloc&rsquo;s electoral setbacks. While many in the alliance, including NCP's Sharad Pawar and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, have expressed support for Banerjee&rsquo;s leadership, a formal decision is yet to be made.
This isn&rsquo;t the first time Lalu Yadav has backed Banerjee. In a 2023 INDIA bloc meeting ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Yadav criticized Left and Congress leaders in West Bengal for their continuous criticism of the TMC leader.

The Congress and its INDIA bloc allies are trying to undermine the integrity of India's electoral process, the BJP alleged on Sunday and urged the Election Commission to prevent any attempts of "violence and unrest" during the counting of votes for the Lok Sabha polls on June 4.
A BJP delegation comprising Union ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Piyush Goyal also urged the poll panel to take cognisance of the "systematic attempts" being made to undermine the electoral process and initiate stringent action against those responsible.
The delegation submitted a memorandum to the Election Commission (EC) in this regard.
"We had to call upon the Election Commission today in light of the repeated attempts by a section of political parties, like the Congress and their INDI alliance partners, and also by certain motivated civil society groups and NGOs who are trying their level best to undermine the integrity of India's electoral process," Goyal told reporters after meeting EC officials.
Their efforts against India's "very robust" electoral process are a direct attack on the country's democratic institutions and pose a risk to public order and trust in the electoral system, he said.
The BJP delegation urged the EC to ensure enhanced monitoring and security measures are put in place during the counting of votes to prevent "any attempts at violence or unrest".
Earlier in the day, a delegation of opposition INDIA bloc leaders, including Congress' Abhishek Singhvi, met the EC and urged it to ensure that all the guidelines, including declaring the postal-ballot results before the outcome of the EVMs is announced, are followed on June 4.
Union minister Goyal said, "I think the mandate given by the people of India both in 2014 and 2019 and the likely mandate of the 2024 general elections expected on June 4 has unnerved the opposition parties and certain non-governmental organisations, so-called civil society groups, who cannot accept a popular leader of the masses who has delivered for the well-being of 1.4 billion Indians." Exit polls on Saturday predicted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will retain power for a third straight term, with the BJP-led NDA expected to win a big majority in the Lok Sabha polls.
Terming the exit polls "bogus", the Congress on Sunday said they were a "deliberate attempt to justify rigging" of the elections and part of "psychological games" being played by Prime Minister Modi to lower the morale of the INDIA bloc workers. Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi dubbed the exit polls as "Modi media poll".
Goyal said the BJP delegation urged the EC to ensure that every official engaged in the counting process is fully conversant with the "minutest details" of the exercise and engages diligently with all protocols of counting so that there can be no deviation whatsoever.
The delegation also urged the poll panel "to ensure safety and security of the electoral process during the counting and announcement of results, including enhanced monitoring and security measures to prevent any attempts at violence or unrest", he said.
Goyal said the BJP delegation asked the EC to take cognisance of the "systematic attempts" being made to undermine the electoral process and take stringent action against those responsible.
"We also urged the EC to issue a public statement affirming the integrity of the electoral process and warning against any attempts to disrupt the democratic process," he added.
Goyal lashed out at Gandhi for terming the exit polls "Modi media poll" and said the Congress leader has passed "very uncharitable comments about the media".
"I strongly condemn the effort to put pressure on the media, the effort to try and paint the media black and to undermine the work that the media is doing," he told reporters.
Those who are not able to accept Prime Minister Modi's leadership and his government's work in the last 10 years are continuously coming out with a toolkit to undermine India's institutions, be it the Supreme Court, various regulatory bodies or the EC, he said.
"The toolkit has now come out with a Delhi resolution of May 28, we don't know who are the parties and the people behind this Delhi resolution, there are no signatories, no names but certain political parties tend to now support such an effort to undermine India's democracy," he charged.
"This is a regular sinister attempt carried out by certain bodies in the guise of civil societies who are very often fronting for the opposition," Goyal said adding, "The BJP and the NDA strongly condemn such efforts by the opposition parties and certain civil society groups." The senior BJP leader said Indians are "extremely proud" that for 30 years now the country has had an unblemished track record in which elections are held in a free and fair manner.
The world today looks up to India's electoral system as one of the most robust, transparent and high-integrity election systems, he said.
"We strongly condemn the Congress and the toolkit and their associates who are working against India's interest and are damaging India's credibility and India's rich tradition of democracy across the world. We are proud of our electoral process," Goyal said.&nbsp;

The top leaders of the opposition INDIA bloc are likely to meet in the national capital on June 1 to assess their performance in the Lok Sabha elections and chalk out their strategy ahead of the results.
The proposed meeting, sources said, will be convened in the afternoon of June 1 when the last phase of polling will be underway.
During the meeting, the opposition leaders will discuss their strategy ahead of the June 4 results and assess their performance in the seven-phase elections, they said.
Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, who is one of the senior-most leaders of the opposition bloc, has convened the meeting, sources said.
West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee has said that she would not be able to attend the June 1 meeting in view of voting in West Bengal and the cyclone.
Asked about the meeting, she said the INDIA bloc had earlier said that they would hold a meeting on June 1.
"I told them I couldn&rsquo;t go as we will still have polls here like a few other states. How could I go with cyclone relief on one side and elections on the other?" Banerjee said in Kolkata.
"My priority is ensuring relief for the people. I am doing a meeting here but my heart lies with the affected people," she added.
Sources in the Trinamool Congress (TMC) said party supremo Mamata Banerjee, party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and other top leaders will be voting on the day and hence will be unable to attend the meeting and pointed out that the party has so far attended all meetings of the opposition bloc.
The TMC has conveyed this to the organisers, they added.
Voting will take place on nine seats, including two seats in Kolkata - Kolkata Dakshin and Kolkata Uttar, in West Bengal on June 1.
The other constituencies that go to polls in the state include Jadavpur, Dum Dum, Barasat, Basirhat, Jayanagar, Mathurapur and Diamond Harbour.
During the meeting, the opposition leaders will get together to evaluate the poll outcome and discuss their future strategy ahead of the June 4 results, sources said.
The opposition alliance has been claiming that it will be able to stop the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) from returning to power at the Centre and cobble together a government of its own.
The first meeting of the opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc was held in Patna on June 23 last year, followed by a meeting in Bengaluru on July 17-18, 2023, and then in Mumbai between August 31 and September 1, where the opposition parties adopted resolutions to unitedly contest the Lok Sabha elections.
The fourth meeting of the opposition bloc was held in Delhi on December 19. The next time the opposition leaders came together was in Delhi on March 31, when top leaders shared the stage at the 'Save Democracy' rally held against the arrests of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren. A similar 'Ulgulan' rally was held in Ranchi on April 21.
While the TMC, which is in power in West Bengal, does not have any seat-sharing deal with the Congress or any other INDIA bloc party in their home state, its candidate Laliteshpati Tripathi in Uttar Pradesh's Bhadohi has been supported by ally Samajwadi Party.
Meanwhile, the ruling alliance led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also claimed that it will form the government at the Centre for the third successive time after the elections.
Twenty-eight opposition parties came together to form the INDIA bloc. However, some parties such as Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United) and the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) later switched over to the NDA.&nbsp;

The event is expected to start at 10 am.
Other prominent political leaders incuding TMC's Derek O'Brien, DMK's Tiruchi Siva, NC's Farooq Abdullah and Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren of JMM are also expected to attend the rally.
Kalpana Soren, the wife of former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren, who is currently in jail, will also attend the rally, he said.
The party leaders said they are also in touch with PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti, who may join the rally.
The AAP has made a three-tier plan to motivate the people to come to the rally. First the meetings were held at the Vidhan Sabha level, then all the 2600 polling stations level and now a door-to-door campaign has started.
"We are going door-to-door to distribute invitation letters and urging people to come to Ramlila Maidan and raise their voices peacefully against democracy and dictatorship," AAp leader Gopal Rai said.
