Being a Communication and Electronic Warfare specialist, Tripathi has had a long and distinguished service spanning nearly 39 years.&nbsp;
Prior to taking over as the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, he had served as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command.

The Indian Navy has freed an Iranian fishing vessel that was hijacked by pirates and rescued its crew of 23 Pakistani nationals, following "intense coercive tactical measures" as part of an anti-piracy operation at sea that lasted for more than 12 hours, officials said.
Following Friday's operation, specialist teams from the Navy undertook a thorough sanitisation and seaworthiness check of the fishing vessel in order to escort it to a safe area for resuming normal fishing activities, according to an official statement shared by a Navy spokesperson.
The Navy said late on Friday evening that it was engaged in an operation to free the fishing vessel from pirates. Nine armed pirates had reportedly boarded the vessel.
The hijacked vessel was intercepted on Thursday, the Navy said.
"INS Sumedha intercepted FV 'Al Kambar' during early hours of Friday and was joined subsequently by the guided missile frigate INS Trishul," it said.
"After more than 12 hours of intense coercive tactical measures as per the SOPs, the pirates on board the hijacked fishing vessel were forced to surrender. The crew, comprising 23 Pakistani nationals, have been safely rescued," the Navy added.
The fishing vessel was approximately 90 nm (nautical miles) southwest of Socotra when the pirates reportedly boarded it, it said.
The Indian Navy said it remains committed to ensuring maritime security in the region and the safety of seafarers, "irrespective of the nationalities".
The Socotra Archipelago is in the northwest Indian Ocean near the Gulf of Aden.
The Navy will take "affirmative action" to ensure a safer and more secure Indian Ocean Region, its chief, Admiral R Hari Kumar, told a press conference on March 23 while citing the anti-piracy and other maritime security operations undertaken by the naval force in the preceding 100 days under "Op Sankalp".
As part of the maritime security operations, the Navy has undertaken anti-piracy, anti-missiles and anti-drones operations. A total of 110 lives -- 45 Indians and 65 foreign nationals -- were saved during "Op Sankalp" in that 100-day period, according to a PPT presentation given by a naval officer before the Navy chief's press conference.
It was also mentioned in the presentation that from November last year till March, "more than 90 maritime incidents have happened", including 57 drone or missile attacks or sightings and 39 incidents of piracy, hijacking and suspicious approaches.

The fishing vessel was boarded by 9 armed pirates around 90 nautical miles southwest of Socotra late on March 28.
The Indian Navy in its official handle on X stated that two Naval ships, who were deployed in the Arabian Sea for maritime security operations, were diverted to intercept the hijacked fishing vessel.
The statement further said that the operation to rescue the crew and hijacked vessel is currently underway.&nbsp;
"Inputs received on a potential piracy incident onboard Iranian Fishing Vessel 'Al-Kambar' late evening on #28Mar 24, approx 90 nm South West of Socotra," it said.
"Two Indian Naval ships, mission deployed in the #ArabianSea for #maritimesecurityoperations were diverted to intercept the hijacked FV, reported to have been boarded by nine armed pirates. The hijacked FV has been intercepted on #29Mar 24. The operation is currently underway by the Indian Navy towards rescue of hijacked FV &amp; its crew."
"IndianNavy remains committed to ensuring #maritimesecurity in the region &amp; safety of the seafarers, irrespective of the nationalities," it said.

On 16th March, the navy intercepted the ship, which had been hijacked in December 2023 and was under the control of the Somalian Pirates.

The Indian Navy on 17th March released photos and visuals of MARCOS commandos rescuing 17 crews on board the hijacked merchant vessel Ruen and coercing 35 Somalian pirates into surrender in the Arabian Sea.
On 15th March, the navy had intercepted the ship, which had been hijacked in December 2023 and was under the control of the Somalian Pirates.&nbsp;
The Navy said that it received information during routine surveillance and was able to track the moment of MV Ruen. It then directed INS Kolkata to intercept the ship approximately off Somalian coast.
"Kolkata intercepted Ruen in the morning of 15 Mar 24, and confirmed the presence of armed pirates through a ship-launched drone," it said in a statement.
"In a reckless hostile act, the pirates shot down the drone and fired at the Indian Naval warship. In a calibrated response iaw International Laws, Kolkata disabled the ship's steering system and navigational aids, forcing the Pirate Ship to stop," it added.
"INS Kolkata undertook precisely measured actions while maintaining her position close to the Pirate Ship and also engaged in forceful negotiations, which resulted in the Pirates surrendering and releasing the pirate ship MV Ruen and its original crew present onboard," it said.&nbsp;
The navy said it would assess the seaworthiness of Ruen and will safely bring the vessel to India which is carrying 37,800 tonnes of cargo estimated at around 1 million dollars.

The Indian Navy has foiled attempts by a group of Somali pirates to hijack ships in the high seas off the east coast of Somalia as it intercepted their vessel, officials said on Saturday.
The armed pirates had sailed out on board a cargo ship named Ruen that was hijacked around three months ago, they said.
"The ex-MV Ruen, which had been hijacked by Somali pirates on 14 December, was reported to have sailed out as a pirate ship towards conducting acts of piracy on high seas," the Navy said.
The vessel was intercepted by an Indian Navy warship on March 15, it said.
The Navy said the pirates opened fire on the Indian warship, which took appropriate actions in self-defence as per international law and to counter piracy and used minimal force to neutralise the pirates' threat to shipping and seafarers.
"The pirates onboard the vessel have been called upon to surrender and release the vessel and any civilians they may be holding against their will," the Navy said in a statement.
"The Indian Navy remains committed to maritime security and safety of seafarers in the region," it added.
On Friday, the Navy said an Indian warship and a long-range maritime patrol aircraft extended assistance to a Bangladeshi-flagged cargo vessel after it was hijacked.
It said the safety of the crew held hostage by the armed pirates was ascertained and the Indian Navy warship continued to maintain its presence in close vicinity of the vessel till its arrival in the territorial waters of Somalia.
In the last few weeks, the Indian Navy has extended assistance to a number of merchant vessels in the Western Indian Ocean following attacks on them.
The Indian Navy, earlier this month, foiled a piracy attempt on an Iranian-flagged fishing vessel having a crew of 11 Iranian and eight Pakistani nationals along the east coast of Somalia.
In January, Indian warship INS Sumitra rescued 19 Pakistani crew of an Iranian-flagged fishing vessel after it was attacked by pirates off the east coast of Somalia.
The Navy on January 5 thwarted an attempted hijacking of the Liberian-flagged vessel MV Lila Norfolk in the North Arabian Sea and rescued all its crew members.
Liberian-flagged vessel MV Chem Pluto, with 21 Indian crew members, was the target of a drone attack off India's west coast on December 23.
The Navy has already enhanced the deployment of its frontline ships and surveillance aircraft for maritime security operations in view of the maritime environment in the critical sea lanes, including in the North and Central Arabian Sea.
There have been mounting global concerns over Houthi militants launching a series of attacks on cargo vessels in the Red Sea in the last few months.&nbsp;

Indian warship INS Kolkata has rescued 21 crew members, including one Indian national, after their Barbados-flagged cargo vessel was hit by a missile in the Gulf of Aden, a Navy spokesperson said on Thursday.
The crew members had abandoned bulk carrier MV True Confidence after it caught fire following the attack on Wednesday.
INS Kolkata, deployed for maritime security operations in the Gulf of Aden, arrived at the scene of action at 4.45 pm and rescued 21 crew members, including one Indian national, from a life raft using its integral helicopter and boats, Navy spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal said.
Critical medical aid was provided to the injured crew by the ship's medical team, he said.
The rescued crew, including the critically injured personnel, have been evacuated to Djibouti by INS Kolkata.
The Indian Navy warship swiftly responded to the maritime incident in Gulf of Aden, Madhwal said.
The Barbados-flagged vessel was reportedly hit by a drone approximately 55 nm south west of Aden resulting in the fire on board and critical injuries to some of the crew members forcing the crew to abandon the ship, he said.
The fresh incident came amid increasing global concerns over attacks on various commercial vessels in the Red Sea by the Houthi militants.

Walking a diplomatic tightrope between India and China, Maldives has ordered all Indian troops to leave the country before March 15.
After the latest round of bilateral talks, India said on February 2 that a "set of mutually workable solutions" was agreed upon with the Maldives for continuing the operations of Indian aviation platforms in the island nation.
The Maldives' proximity to India -- barely 70 nautical miles from the island of Minicoy in Lakshadweep and 300 nautical miles from the mainland's western coast -- and its location at centre of commercial sea lanes running through the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), gives it significant strategic importance.
The development comes days after Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, widely seen as a pro-China leader, in his maiden address to Parliament on February 5 announced that the first group of Indian military personnel will be sent back from the island nation before the deadline.

A &ldquo;matching pocket square&rdquo; can be used in the sleeveless and straight-cut waistcoat or jacket.
There are similar instructions for women officers who want to wear &ldquo;kurta-churidaar&rdquo; or &ldquo;kurta-palazzo&rdquo;.
The new dress code, however, is not applicable for warships or submarines, an officer said.

The Indian Navy thwarted yet another hijacking attempt by pirates along the east coast of Somalia on February 2.
A total of 11 Iranian and 8 Pakistani nationals were rescued on board FV Omari, an Iranian-flagged fishing vessel, after INS Sharada fended off the seven Somalian pirates.
The Navy said that INS Sharada, which was already engaged in anti-piracy operations, coerced the pirates into releasing the hostages unharmed.
"IndianNavy foils another #Piracy attempt along East coast of Somalia. #FVOmari, an Iranian 🇮🇷 Flagged Vessel, had been boarded by seven pirates who had taken the crew as hostages," Navy&nbsp; spokesperson said in a statment.
"Information regarding piracy attempt on Fishing Vessel was monitored on 31 Jan 24. Indian Naval RPA, undertaking surveillance in the area, successfully located FV Omari, &amp; #INSSharda deployed for anti-piracy mission in the region was diverted to intercept the boat. INS Sharda intercepted the vessel in early hours of 02 Feb 24 and used her integral helo and boats to coerce the pirates for safe release of crew along with the vessel," they said.
Meanwhile, Union Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt informed the Lok Sabha earlier in the day that the navy units are being deployed to Djibouti, Gulf of Aden, and the North Arabian Sea to provide security to the merchant vessels amid rising concerns over Houthi militants' attack.
Responding to a question, Bhatt said the Navy is also sharing information with friendly foreign countries to identify the sources and players involved in the attacks.

In a statement, the Indian Navy said that it intercepted the hijacked vessel through coercive posturing and deployed helicopters and boats to secure the release of the crew.
The operation was carried out hours after INS Sumitra thwarted a piracy bid by rescuing another Iranian-flagged MV Iman.&nbsp;
"Having thwarted the Piracy attempt on FV Iman, the warship has carried out another successful anti-piracy ops off the East Coast of Somalia, rescuing Fishing Vessel Al Naeemi and her Crew (19 Pakistani Nationals) from 11 Somali Pirates," said Indian Navy spokesperson on X.
"This rescue of hijacked Vessels, through swift, persistent and relentless efforts by Mission Deployed #IndianNavy warship in the Southern Arabian Sea approx 850 nm West of Kochi, also prevents misuse of Fishing Vessels as Mother Ships for further acts of Piracy on Merchant Vessels," the spokesperson added.

Indian Navy's elite marine commandos on Friday rescued all 21 crew members including 15 Indians from a bulk carrier after boarding it from a warship in a swift operation in the North Arabian Sea that followed after around five to six armed pirates attempted to hijack the Liberian-flagged vessel.
The Navy deployed a warship, maritime patrol aircraft P-8I, helicopters and MQ9B Predator drones to assist the vessel MV Lila Norfolk after it sent a message on the UK Maritime Trade Operations portal, saying unknown armed personnel had boarded it on Thursday evening.
Indian Navy spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal said frontline warship INS Chennai intercepted the cargo vessel at 3:15 pm and that MARCOs commandos "sanitised" it.
All the crew members were hiding in a safe room on the vessel since last evening when the pirates boarded the cargo ship, it is learnt.

According to a Hindustan Times report, Jagannathan said that the crew members included 17 Indians and five Filipinos.
Earlier, the Indian Navy had said that INS Chennai intercepted the hijacked vessel and the marine commandos started the sanitisation operation. It added that the ship was kept under continuous surveillance using a helicopter.
Meanwhile, citing military officials, news agency ANI said that the Navy issued a warning to pirates to abandon the hijacked vessel. The officials later said that the top deck of the hijacked vessel was sanitised.

The Indian Navy has deployed a warship following an incident of hijacking of a Liberian-flagged merchant vessel, with some Indian crew members, in the Arabian Sea.
The incident of hijacking of the cargo ship MV Lila Norfolk was reported on Thursday by the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a British military organisation that tracks movements of various vessels in strategic waterways.
Indian Navy's mission deployed platforms responded swiftly to a maritime incident in the Arabian Sea involving the hijacking on board a Liberia-flagged bulk carrier, a Navy spokesperson said.
He said the vessel sent a message on UKMTO portal indicating boarding by around five to six unknown armed personnel on Thursday evening.
Responding swiftly to the developing situation, Indian Navy launched a maritime patrol and has diverted INS Chennai deployed for maritime security Operations to assist the vessel.
It is learnt that the crew of the vessel comprised a number of Indians.
Indian Navy's maritime patrol aircraft overflew the vessel early Friday and established contact with the vessel, ascertaining the safety of the crew, the official said.
"Naval aircraft continues to monitor movement and INS Chennai is closing the vessel to render assistance," he said.
"The overall situation is being closely monitored, in coordination with other agencies in the area," he said.

According to a Hindustan Times report, INS Kolkata, INS Kochi, INS Mormugao, INS Chennai and INS Visakhapatnam have been positioned to thwart any future attacks.
This comes amid increased maritime hostilities owing to the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, with Houthi rebels targeting ships linked to Israel.
Apart from the five warships, Boeing P 8 I anti-submarine warfare aircraft and long endurance Sea Guardian drone have also been deployed in the region.

Chemical tanker MV Chem Pluto was struck by a drone off India's west coast but the origin of the strike and the amount of explosive used for it could be known after further forensic and technical scrutiny, according to an analysis by the Indian Navy on Monday following an initial inspection of the vessel after it arrived at Mumbai harbour.
The Navy's explosive ordnance disposal team carried out a detailed inspection of the Liberian-flagged vessel on its arrival at Mumbai harbour, two days after the ship was hit by a drone off in the Arabian Sea when it was on its way to New Mangalore port.
A Pentagon spokesperson said on Sunday that MV Chem Pluto was hit by "a one-way attack drone fired from Iran".
In view of spate of attacks on commercial vessels in the Arabian Sea, the Navy deployed P-8I long-range patrol aircraft for surveillance, and warships INS Mormugao, INS Kochi and INS Kolkata in the region to maintain "deterrent presence", Navy officials said.
Saturday's drone attack on MV Chem Pluto came amid increasing concerns over various commercial vessels being targeted reportedly by Iran-backed Houthi militants in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden amid the Israel-Hamas conflict.
The vessel with 21 Indian and one Vietnamese crew, anchored at outer anchorage off Mumbai at 3:30 pm. It was escorted on its way to Mumbai by Indian Coast Guard ship ICGS Vikram.
"On her arrival, the Indian Navy explosive ordnance disposal team inspected the vessel to make a preliminary assessment of the type and nature of attack. The analysis of the area of attack and debris found on the ship points towards a drone attack," a Navy spokesperson said.
"However, further forensic and technical analysis will be required to establish the vector of attack including type and amount of explosive used," he said.
The spokesperson said a joint investigation by various agencies commenced following completion of the analysis of the vessel by the explosive ordnance team.
"MV Chem Pluto has been cleared for further operation by her company-in-charge at Mumbai. The ship is scheduled to undergo mandatory checks by the various inspecting authorities before undertaking ship to ship transfer of cargo," he said.
"This is likely to be followed by docking and repairs of the damaged portion of MV Chem Pluto," he said.
The official said three guided missile destroyers have been deployed in the Arabian Sea in view of spate of attacks on commercial vessels in the region.
MV Chem Pluto, carrying crude oil to New Mangalore port from Al Jubail port in Saudi Arabia, was struck about 217 nautical miles from Porbandar on Saturday. No one was injured in the incident.
A Gabon-flagged commercial crude oil tanker with 25 Indian crew members also came under a drone attack in the Southern Red Sea on Saturday but no one was injured, according to Indian officials and the US military.
"Considering the recent spate of attacks in the Arabian Sea, the Indian Navy has deployed guided missile destroyers, INS Mormugao, INS Kochi and INS Kolkata in various areas to maintain a deterrent presence," the official said.
He said long-range maritime reconnaissance P8I aircraft are being regularly tasked to maintain domain awareness.
"Western Naval Command's Maritime Operations Centre is actively monitoring the situation in close coordination with Coast Guard and all concerned agencies," he said.

The Indian Navy on Saturday said it swiftly responded to a maritime incident in the Arabian Sea involving the hijacking of a Malta-flagged vessel with 18 crew members on board.
The Navy's maritime patrol aircraft undertaking surveillance in the area and its warship on anti-piracy patrol in the Gulf of Aden were deployed to locate and assist the vessel -- MV Ruen -- after receiving a distress call from it.
The hijacking attempt was reported on Thursday and the Indian Navy sent its mission deployed platforms to the area of the incident early on Friday, officials said.
The Navy said its aircraft flew over the hijacked vessel and it has been continuously monitoring movement of the vessel, which is now heading towards the coast of Somalia.
"Responding swiftly to the developing situation, the Indian Navy diverted its naval maritime patrol aircraft undertaking surveillance in the area and its warship on anti-piracy patrol in the Gulf of Aden to locate and assist MV Ruen," an Indian Navy spokesperson said.
"The aircraft overflew the hijacked vessel on early morning of December 15 and the aircraft has been continuously monitoring movement of the vessel, which is now heading towards the coast of Somalia," he said.
The official said the Indian Navy's warship deployed in the Gulf of Aden for anti-piracy patrol also intercepted the MV Ruen on Saturday morning.
The overall situation is being closely monitored, in coordination with other agencies in the area, he said.
