Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL) reached a significant milestone in its journey towards operational readiness with the successful completion of its first flight validation test, an essential step ahead of its anticipated commercial launch in April 2025. On a momentous Monday, an IndiGo aircraft, manned by a full crew and accompanied by experts from the Airports Authority of India (AAI), performed the pivotal trial, marking a crucial advance in the airport's development strategy.
The trial was not just a symbolic gesture but a thorough technical assessment, encompassing various aspects of aviation operations. The centerpiece of the exercise involved takeoff and landing maneuvers on the newly constructed runway. The importance of such validation flights&mdash;or proving flights&mdash;cannot be overstated. They are integral to the certification lattice, serving as a means to ensure compliance with stringent safety, operational, and regulatory standards.
During these flights, the airport's ability to handle real-world scenarios is put to the test, assessing whether its infrastructure, procedures, and systems align seamlessly with the guidelines laid down by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). These simulations play a critical role in ascertaining the preparedness for handling commercial flights and ensuring passenger safety and operational efficiency.
Following the meticulous collection of data during the exercise, the subsequent review by the DGCA will determine the way forward. Approved data will pave the way for the airport authorities to apply for an aerodrome license, an indispensable step before the airport can fully commence operations and serve as a lynchpin in India's aviation sector.
The validation phase is programmed to run between November 30 and December 15, reflecting a strategically planned schedule moving forward. This follows the airport's achievement in October when critical milestones were accomplished with the successful calibration of its Instrument Landing System (ILS) and Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) systems. These sophisticated systems are crucial for ensuring aircraft can land safely, especially under challenging conditions, underscoring the airport's commitment to safety and technological excellence.
As NIAL progresses, officials reported that the project&rsquo;s first phase has achieved 85% completion. The impressive 3.9 km runway is already operational, signaling readiness to accommodate various aircraft types. Meanwhile, the terminal building is fast approaching the final stages of construction. This structure is envisaged to offer an array of world-class amenities, promising a seamless experience for travelers and setting new benchmarks in airport infrastructure.

IndiGo takes flight toward inclusivity with gender-neutral 'Mx' Title & LGBTQ+ support

IndiGo is evaluating introducing the gender-neutral option of honorific 'Mx' for internal candidates as part of larger efforts to boost inclusivity.
Besides, the country's largest carrier, which has a domestic market share of 62 per cent, aims to increase by two-fold the number of individuals with disabilities employed by it.
An airline spokesperson said it is evaluating introducing the option of honorific 'Mx' for internal candidates.
Sukhjit S Pasricha, Group Chief Human Resources Officer at IndiGo, told PTI that the airline has implemented various initiatives for the LGBTQ+ community, including employee referral programmes specifically designed to encourage hiring of LGBTQ+ individuals.
"This has strengthened candidate mobilisation through internal resources and fostered a more inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ employees... we partner with agencies specialising in LGBTQ+ recruitment," he said.
According to him, there is a steady induction of LGBTQ+ individuals and they are working in various functions, including flying, at the airline.
"Our benefits like gender reassignment surgery, inclusion of live-in partners in the medical insurance, has created an even more inclusive space, and has been one of the attractive features in our outreach to aspiring candidates from the community," he added.
At the end of March 31, 2024, the airline had 36,860 permanent employees, including 5,038 pilots and 9,363 cabin crew.
"Our organisation has over 240+ individuals with disabilities across 60+ cities in customer facing roles. The placement of individuals with disabilities is determined based on multiple factors, including safety, accommodation requirements, and skill mapping.
"We prioritise merit-based hiring and have primarily employed individuals with disabilities as customer service officers/executives for airport operations roles, with some also serving in cargo teams," Pasricha said.
He also said the airline aims to increase the number of individuals with disabilities employed by it by at least two-fold in the coming financial year.&nbsp;

An IndiGo flight from Chennai made an emergency landing at Mumbai airport after receiving bomb threat on Saturday.&nbsp;
IndiGo in a statement said that the crew found a note in the lavatory that mentioned there is a bomb.&nbsp;
The flight landed safely and passengers were deboarded at the isolation bay.&nbsp;
Further security checks are underway.
"IndiGo flight 6E 5314 operating from Chennai to Mumbai had received a bomb threat. Upon landing in Mumbai, the crew followed protocol and the aircraft was taken to an isolation bay as per security agency guidelines. All passengers have safely disembarked the aircraft. The aircraft is currently undergoing inspection. Post completion of all security checks, the aircraft will be positioned back in the terminal area," the statement read.
This is the second time in less than a week that the airline received bomb threat. On May 28, an IndiGo flight from Delhi to Varanasi received similar threat. It was later found to be hoax.&nbsp;

&ldquo;It is specifically tailored to PNRs (Passenger Name Records) with women travellers &mdash; solo as well as part of family bookings.&hellip; (this is) currently in pilot mode aligning with our &lsquo;girl power&rsquo; ethos,&rdquo; the airline said in a statement.

As per the airline, this feature has been introduced after market research to make the &ldquo;travel experience more comfortable for our female passengers.&rdquo;&nbsp; The feature is specifically tailored to Passenger Name Records (PNR) with women travellers - solo as well as part of family bookings
The feature has come after multiple untoward incidents against women travellers on flights occured. In January 2023, a male passenger urinated on an elderly women traveller on an Air India flight, in July 2023 a male professor sexually assaulted a doctor on a Delhi-Mumbai IndiGo flight and a woman was groped on a Mumbai-Guwahati IndiGo flight in September 2023.
As per Directorate General of Civil aviation data (DGCA), IndiGo is India's largest air carrier with a domestic market share of 60.5% in 2023.

Indigo reported profit in FY19 before covid hit the aviation industry. As per The Economic Times, the chief human resource officer of Indigo Sukhjit Pasricha in an email told the employees that the airline took 2 and a half years to recover from the losses incurred during Covid.
&ldquo;The losses incurred during Covid had a very significant impact and washed away profits of the years before. We started our path to recovery in the 2nd half of the year 2022 and since then we demonstrated a solid and strong performance, &ldquo;Sukhjit Pasricha, chief human resource officer of IndiGo, said in a mail to employees which was reviewed by The Economic Times.

An IndiGo aircraft grazed the wings of an Air India Express plane at the Kolkata airport on Wednesday, leaving wings of both aircraft damaged, officials said.
The IndiGo flight was headed to Darbhanga, while the Air India Express plane was scheduled to leave for Chennai.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched a probe and de-rostered two IndiGo pilots involved in the incident, a senior DGCA official said.
Both aircraft had passengers on board at the time of the accident but no injuries have been reported.
Air India in a statement said the aircraft has returned to the bay and further investigations are underway.
"The wingtip of a taxiing aircraft of another airline grazed one of our aircraft, which was stationary and awaiting clearance to enter the runway at Kolkata for a scheduled operation to Chennai," an Air India Express spokesperson said in a statement.
The aircraft has since returned to the bay and further investigation is underway, "for which we are coordinating with the regulator and airport authorities," the airline said.
The incident took place on the taxiway near the runway around 11 am, sources at the airport said.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) said in a statement that the wingtip vortices of both planes were badly damaged.
"A minor graze between a taxiing IndiGo aircraft and that of another carrier was reported from Kolkata Airport. The aircraft returned to bay for inspection and necessary action, as per protocol," IndiGo said in a statement.
Consequently IndiGo flight 6E-6152 between Kolkata and Darbhanga has been delayed, it said, adding that an alternate aircraft has been arranged to minimise delay and inconvenience to passengers.
IndiGo also said that "an incident report will be submitted to DGCA in due course, as per protocol".&nbsp;

Our cabin crew promptly informed the customers who were allotted these seats. This is a standard practice for cleaning during transit as and when required."
Social media users suggested that the woman should go to consumer forum and ask for compensation.&nbsp;

The aircraft, with 162 passengers on board, was on the tarmac and ready to take off. Right at that time, the first officer was informed about his grandmother's demise. The pilot refused to take off saying he was not in the right frame of mind to fly.&nbsp;
The Hindustan Times reported, "The first officer received information of the sudden demise of his grandmother. An alternate crew was arranged for the flight, and the passengers were served refreshments." IndiGo has not yet issued any statement on the matter.&nbsp;
IndiGo has been in the headlines lately for icreasing inctances of flight delays. In one such incident, a video went viral that showed a passenger hitting the pilot announcing the delay.&nbsp;
In another case, &nbsp;IndiGo passengers were seen having dinner on the tarmac after a flight was delayed for hours and later diverted. Several internet users on X claimed that a Goa to Delhi Indigo flight was delayed for almost 18 hours on January 14 and later diverted to Mumbai.&nbsp;
