Initial Mission Plans and Setbacks
Williams and Wilmore launched aboard Boeing's Starliner on June 5, 2024, as part of its first crewed flight under NASA's Commercial Crew Program. The mission, initially intended to last just one week, aimed to evaluate the Starliner's performance in launch, docking, and landing phases. However, technical issues with the spacecraft forced an early return of the capsule to Earth&mdash;without the astronauts onboard&mdash;leading to significant delays in their planned journey back. 
Challenges with Return Timelines
Originally expected to return in February 2025, their return has now been postponed to late March or early April 2025. The delay arises from additional time required by SpaceX to prepare a new Crew Dragon capsule to accommodate the astronauts. NASA explored alternate options, including using a different SpaceX capsule, but ultimately decided to extend their stay until the new capsule is ready for launch.

SpaceX Steps in to Provide a Solution
After deeming Boeing&rsquo;s Starliner unsuitable for the astronauts' return due to persistent malfunctions and safety concerns, NASA partnered with SpaceX to adjust its Crew-9 mission. SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule will now bring Williams and Wilmore back to Earth, underscoring its pivotal role in NASA's current operations.

Significance of Starliner&rsquo;s Mission Despite the setbacks, the Starliner mission marked a critical milestone as Boeing's first crewed flight. This mission was essential for NASA to evaluate the spacecraft's readiness for future crewed missions to the ISS. The astronauts should reach the orbiting lab on Tuesday. They will replace a crew from the US, Denmark, Japan and Russia, who have been there since August.

There was almost another postponement Sunday night. A small crack in the seal of the SpaceX capsule's hatch prompted a last-minute flurry of reviews, but it was deemed safe for the whole mission.
The new crew's six-month stay includes the arrival of two rocketships ordered by NASA. Boeing's new Starliner capsule with test pilots is due in late April. A month or two later, Sierra Space's Dream Chaser, a mini shuttle, should arrive. It is for delivering cargo to the station, but not passengers yet.

She's the second Black woman assigned to a long station mission. She said before the flight that she is especially proud to be a role model for Black girls, demonstrating that spaceflight &ldquo;is an option for them, that this is not just for other people.&rdquo; An engineer, she worked for Ford Motor Co. and the CIA before becoming an astronaut in 2009. Epps should have launched to the space station on a Russian rocket in 2018, but was replaced for reasons never publicly disclosed.
Also new to space are Dominick, a Navy pilot, and Grebenkin, a former Russian military officer.
Barratt, a doctor on his third mission, is the oldest full-time astronaut to fly in space. He turns 65 in April.
&ldquo;As long as we stay healthy and fit and engaged, we're good to fly,&rdquo; he said.
Flight controllers are monitoring a growing cabin leak on Russia's side of the space station. The leak has doubled in size in the past few weeks and the area has been sealed off, NASA programme manager Joel Montalbano said. He stressed there is no impact to station operations or crew safety.&nbsp;

One video created in memory of the series' author Douglas Adams garnered over 17 million views on the video-blogging platform.

China on Sunday successfully launched three astronauts on a six-month mission to complete the construction of the country’s space station currently orbiting the earth.
The Shenzhou-14 spacecraft carrying astronauts Chen Dong, Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe, was lifted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China.
Minutes later, the official at the ground control declared the mission a “great success”, saying the spacecraft has reached its designated orbit.
The trio will cooperate with the ground team to complete the assembly and construction of the Tiangong space station, developing it from a single-module structure into a national space laboratory with three modules -- the core module, Tianhe and two lab modules -- Wentian and Mengtian.
The launch was telecast live all over the country.
The mission will build the space station into a national space laboratory, Lin Xiqiang, the deputy director of the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) announced on Saturday.
The Shenzhou-14 crew will work with the ground team to complete the rendezvous, docking and transposition of the two lab modules with the core module, Lin said at a pre-launch press conference.
They will enter the two lab modules for the first time and help make the environment suitable for their stay, he said, adding that they will unlock and install a dozen of scientific experiment cabinets in the two modules.
This is the 2nd set of six astronauts China has sent to build its space station.
Earlier, a three-member Chinese astronaut crew which included a woman returned to the earth in April after spending a record six months, building vital parts of the space station which is expected to be ready by this year.
They had completed the verification of key technologies of its space station, according to the CMSA.
Once ready, China will be the only country to own a space station. The International Space Station (ISS) of Russia is a collaborative project of several countries.
China Space Station (CSS) is also expected to be a competitor to the ISS built by Russia.
Observers say CSS may become the sole space station to remain in orbit once the ISS retires in the coming years.
In February, China unveiled an ambitious plan for its burgeoning space industry which included over 50 space launches and six manned space flights to complete the building of its space station.
The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) said China will carry out more than 50 space launches in 2022, sending over 140 spacecraft into space.
Chen, who will be the commander of the new mission, participated in the Shenzhou-11 crewed spaceflight mission. Liu was part of the Shenzhou-9 mission and Cai is a newcomer to space, Lin Xiqiang, deputy director of the CMSA, said at the press conference at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre.
The trio will stay in orbit for six months, Lin said.
During their stay in orbit, the Shenzhou-14 crew will witness the two lab modules, Tianzhou-5 cargo craft and Shenzhou-15 crewed spaceship dock with the core module Tianhe.
They will rotate with the Shenzhou-15 crew in orbit, and return to the Dongfeng landing site in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in December, Lin said.
China began constructing its three-module space station in April 2021 with the launch of Tianhe - the first and biggest of the station's three modules.

The latest guests were accompanied by a former NASA astronaut now working for Axiom Space, the Houston company in charge of the flight, making it the first fully private trip to the space station.
After hosting longer than expected, NASA was itching to make room for the next crew.
SpaceX will attempt to launch three NASA astronauts and one Italian to the space station as soon as Wednesday.
They'll replace the three Americans and a German up there since November who will head back to Earth in their own SpaceX capsule.
Axiom handled the logistics for the trip for its three paying customers: Connor from Dayton, Ohio; Canadian private equity CEO Mark Pathy; and Israeli investor Eytan Stibbe of Tel Aviv.
Their chaperone was Michael López-Alegría, an Axiom vice president who flew to space four times while a NASA astronaut.
Axiom teamed up with SpaceX for the journey that began with an April 8 liftoff from NASA's Kennedy Space Center.
It was SpaceX's second private flight, coming just months after a billionaire's orbital jaunt with contest winners.
While in space, the visitors did experiments and peered back at Earth.
Axiom's second flight is set for early next year as the company looks ahead to having its own space station by 2030.

The one German and three US astronauts said it was an emotional moment when they first spotted the space station 20 miles (30 kilometres) distant &mdash; "a pretty glorious sight," according to Raja Chari, commander of the Dragon capsule.
"Floating in space and shining like a diamond," noted German astronaut Matthias Maurer. "We're all very thrilled, very excited." The Dragon's entire flight was automated, with Chari and pilot Tom Marshburn monitoring the capsule systems, ready to take control if necessary. At one point, they reported what looked like a "gnarled knob" or possibly a small mechanical nut floating past their camera's field of view, but SpaceX Mission Control said it posed no concern. The docking occurred 263 miles (423 kilometres) above the eastern Caribbean.
The station's welcoming committee consisted of three astronauts instead of the originally planned seven. That's because SpaceX returned four of the station residents on Monday, after the new arrivals' launch kept getting delayed.
While Chari, Marshburn, Maurer and NASA astronaut Kayla Barron were adapting to weightlessness &mdash; all but Marshburn are space rookies &mdash; the previous crew was adjusting to life back on Earth.

The one German and three US astronauts said it was an emotional moment when they first spotted the space station 20 miles (30 kilometres) distant &mdash; "a pretty glorious sight," according to Raja Chari, commander of the Dragon capsule.
"Floating in space and shining like a diamond," noted German astronaut Matthias Maurer. "We're all very thrilled, very excited." The Dragon's entire flight was automated, with Chari and pilot Tom Marshburn monitoring the capsule systems, ready to take control if necessary. At one point, they reported what looked like a "gnarled knob" or possibly a small mechanical nut floating past their camera's field of view, but SpaceX Mission Control said it posed no concern. The docking occurred 263 miles (423 kilometres) above the eastern Caribbean.

The station's welcoming committee consisted of three astronauts instead of the originally planned seven. That's because SpaceX returned four of the station residents on Monday, after the new arrivals' launch kept getting delayed.
While Chari, Marshburn, Maurer and NASA astronaut Kayla Barron were adapting to weightlessness &mdash; all but Marshburn are space rookies &mdash; the previous crew was adjusting to life back on Earth.
"Gravity sucks, but getting used to it slowly," Japanese astronaut Akihoki Hoshide tweeted.

"Promoting this sector is very important,"&nbsp;Shipenko&nbsp;said. "Maybe we can encourage other people to go to space."&nbsp;
Speaking at the Russian launch facility in Baikonur, Kazakhstan,&nbsp;Peresild&nbsp;also admitted that training for the mission had been&nbsp;gruelling, but he described it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.&nbsp;
The 37-year-old actor said it was difficult for her to adapt to the strict discipline and rigorous demands required during the training. "We have the opportunity to fly to space, and not just fly there but to do what we know best on Earth- to make a film," she said in an interview last week.&nbsp;
The crew has taken off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. After 12 days on the space outpost, the crew will return to Earth on October 17.&nbsp;

A three-person crew reached the International Space Station on Wednesday, the Russian space agency said, after a journey of just over three hours that was the fastest ever for a manned craft to the orbital lab.
Roscosmos confirmed the successful docking of the Soyuz spacecraft in a tweet. The journey "took a record short three hours and three minutes," Russian news wire RIA Novosti added.
For the first time, the space agency tried a two-orbit, three-hour approach to the orbiting outpost. Previously it took twice as long for the crews to reach the station.
