<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Jammu and Kashmir and is leading the 10th International Yoga Day celebrations at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre on the banks of Dal Lake.&nbsp;</p>
<p>He urged everyone to make yoga a part of their daily lives as it fosters strength, good health and wellness. "The world is looking at Yoga as a power for global good," he added at the event in Srinagar.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The event which was slated to begin at 6:30 am was delayed by early morning rainfall. Moderate to heavy rainfall has been reported from across the Valley, making it difficult to hold open-air yoga events, officials said.</p>

<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Yoga celebration at the UN headquarters on Wednesday created a Guinness World Record for the participation of people of most nationalities.</p>
<p>Modi, who is here on the first leg of his maiden state visit to the US at the invitation of President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, led a historic event at the UN Headquarters here to commemorate the 9th International Day of Yoga, attended by top UN officials, diplomats and prominent personalities.</p>
<p>The Yoga celebration led by Prime Minister Modi at the UN headquarters created the Guinness World Record for participation of people of most nationalities, officials said.</p>
<p>The prime minister, wearing a customised white yoga T-shirt and trouser, thanked people for coming here from far away to attend the celebration.</p>
<p>"I'm delighted to see you all. And I thank you all for coming. Friends. I'm told that almost every nationality is represented here today," Modi told the gathering.</p>
<p>He was joined by President of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly Csaba Korisi, deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, and New York City mayor Eric Adams.&nbsp;</p>

Several members of the Indian diaspora and Yoga enthusiasts gathered at the iconic Trafalgar Square in London for a two-hour session to celebrate Internation Yoga Day. 

<p>The Indian High Commission in London organised a 2-hour yoga session at Trafalgar Square on Tuesday</p>

<p>The International Day of Yoga 2023 celebrations returned to Trafalgar Square on Tuesday after a hiatus since the COVID-19 pandemic, when the event had to take on a more virtual element.</p>
<p>Several members of the Indian diaspora and Yoga enthusiasts more broadly gathered at the iconic square in London and followed the lead of experts from UK-based Yoga organisations such as Isha Foundation, Iyengar Yoga UK, Heartfulness Meditation and Shrimad Rajchandra Mission Dharampur (SRMD) UK in a two-hour holistic session. The gathering, organised by the Indian High Commission in London and backed by the Mayor of London, began with prayers and incorporated several asanas and breathing exercises as the experts explained the benefits of each move.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Yoga is India&rsquo;s gift to the world and also one of our most popular and indigenised exports, available as a practice everywhere in the world today,&rdquo; said Vikram Doraiswami, India&rsquo;s High Commissioner to the UK.</p>
<p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s also special that the Yoga Day in London is a precursor to the event that&rsquo;s being held in New York, where Prime Minister Modi would be celebrating the International Day of Yoga at the United Nations headquarters. It&rsquo;s a very nice precursor to that very high-level event, which is going to precede a major state visit to the US. So, it&rsquo;s an important moment for all of us at the mission in London to be able to help build up anticipation for that visit,&rdquo; he said.</p>
<p>International Day of Yoga (IDY) is marked the world over on June 21, and this year&rsquo;s theme is Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam &ndash; or the world as one family.</p>
<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who departed for a historic state visit to the US, will participate in a Yoga session at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Wednesday, marking the ninth Yoga Day since he proposed the motion at the UN in 2014.</p>
<p>In London, the High Commissioner was joined by many senior staff from the Indian mission in taking part in the wide-ranging Yoga session, including Deputy High Commissioner to the UK Sujit Ghosh.</p>

<p>The Yoga Day event organised in Surat city of Gujarat on Wednesday has set a new Guinness World Record for the largest gathering for a yoga session at one place with 1.53 lakh people joining the program, officials said.</p>
<p>Representatives of the Guinness World Records have confirmed that 1.53 lakh people participated in the Yoga session in Surat, they said.</p>
<p>The previous world record was set in 2018 in Kota city of Rajasthan when 1,00,984 people participated in a Yoga Day session in one place.</p>
<p>"The Yoga Day event in Surat has set a new Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people for a yoga session in one place. More than one lakh people took part in the event and broke the previous record," said Gujarat Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi.</p>
<p>Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel joined the state-level 'International Day of Yoga celebration in the Dumas area of Surat.</p>
<p>"While the state government had set a target of 1.25 lakh people for the Yoga session in Surat, officials of the Guinness World Records have confirmed that more than 1.50 lakh people gathered at the venue," said Shalini Agarwal, Commissioner, Surat Municipal Corporation.</p>
<p>After this event, representatives of the Guinness Book of World Records handed over a certificate to chief minister Patel declaring that a new world record has been created for the largest gathering of people for a yoga session at one place, said Surat district Collector, Aayush Oak.</p>
<p>"All the participants who had registered themselves were given a wristband with a QR Code which was scanned at the time of entry.</p>
<p>"Using that data, representatives of the Guinness World Records have confirmed that 1.53 lakh people gathered here for the Yoga session, beating the previous record set in 2018 in Kota city of Rajasthan when 1,00,984 persons participated in Yoga day celebration at one place", said Oak.</p>
<p>According to Agarwal, nearly 2.20 lakh people registered themselves through an online link created for this purpose.</p>
<p>"The QR code data confirmed that 1.53 lakh people took part in the Yoga Day event in the presence of the chief minister. These participants were accommodated on two stretches of roads having a combined length of 10.5 km. We had created 135 blocks on these roads and accommodated nearly 1,000 people in each block with an LED screen and an instructor," said the civic chief.</p>
<p>Across Gujarat, 1.25 crore people took part in the Yoga Day celebration at 72,000 venues, the chief minister said in his address in Surat.</p>
<p>He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has popularised yoga across the world.</p>
<p>"We witnessed how Yoga and pranayam helped people during the coronavirus pandemic," the chief minister said, adding that a world record has been created in Surat with the participation of more than one lakh people.</p>
<p>On the occasion, the chief minister announced that the state government will open 21 'Yog Studios' in the near future to popularise yoga.</p>
<p>"The State Yog Board has so far trained 5,000 instructors. In the coming days, the state government is planning to start 21 Yoga studios in the state," he said.</p>
<p>While the state-level event to mark International Yoga Day was held in Surat in the presence of the chief minister, other ministers, MLAs, MPs and officials took part in programmes in different districts.</p>
<p>"As the country is celebrating 75 years of independence, the state government has selected 75 iconic places to celebrate Yoga Day. These places include the Sabarmati Riverfront (Ahmedabad), Statue of Unity (Kevadia), White Rann of Kutch and Modhera Sun Temple," said an official release.</p>
<p>The Yoga Day events were also held in various villages, towns, cities, colleges, schools, health centres, police headquarters, jails, police stations and at public places such as gardens, it added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Nine years after Prime Minister Modi first proposed from the United Nations General Assembly podium to mark International Yoga Day as an annual commemoration, the Indian leader will for the first time be at the UN Headquarters to lead the yoga session in a historic commemoration of the day.</p>
<p>India&rsquo;s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj told PTI in an interview that the yoga celebration this year will be a very &ldquo;unique occasion&rdquo; because it was Prime Minister Modi who had given this vision and it was his leadership that ensured that June 21 every year is celebrated as International Yoga Day.</p>
<p>"So about nine years later, the author of that vision comes to the United Nations,&rdquo; she said, adding that now Yoga Day is an UN-mandated occasion. "So the coming together of the two- the visionary leader and the United Nations, I think, is in itself very unique,&rdquo; Kamboj said.</p>
<p>She said that the yoga event is generating a lot of anticipation and excitement and is very heavily subscribed. "The international element is very high. There's a lot of interest, which is in itself, I would say, a sort of attribute to yoga, this ancient Indian practice, the fact that it has transcended all borders and it has become a global phenomenon.&rdquo; Kamboj added that the &ldquo;fact that there will be children performing yoga onstage is very unique. So altogether I think it is going to be quite a one of its kind event.&rdquo;&nbsp;</p>
<p>Prime Minister Modi will be paying his respects to the bust of Mahatma Gandhi that now "proudly adorns&rdquo; the North Lawn of the UN headquarters where the yoga will also be conducted. "There is also a memorial to the fallen Peacekeeper which is, I think, very poignant and very significant given that India is the largest troop and police contributing country,&rdquo; to UN peacekeepers, Kamboj said.</p>
<p>The historic yoga session is expected to be attended by top UN officials, ambassadors, envoys, delegates from Member States as well as prominent members of the global and diaspora community.</p>

<p>International Day of Yoga is celebrated to encourage mindfulness, stress reduction and overall health. This day holds the great significance of shedding light on the importance of psychological and physical well-being. &nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong>History of International Yoga Day 2023</strong></h3>
<p>On September 27, 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the first time suggested the establishment of International Yoga Day, following which a resolution designating June 21 as International Yoga Day was introduced by the then Indian Ambassador, Asoke Kumar Mukerji.</p>
<p>The date June 21 was chosen as it falls on the Summer Solstice, when there is the most sunlight throughout the year. New Delhi hosted the first International Yoga Day on June 21, 2015 and is now celebrated globally.</p>
<h3><strong>Unique features of International Yoga Day 2023</strong></h3>

<p>The 9 ports around the world will host Indian naval ships that will take part in the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) demonstration. The CYP will be organised by the Ministry of Ports, shipping, and Waterways, in nations where they have signed MoUs.&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Yoga Bharatmala</strong></p>
<p>The chain of demonstration will be performed in unison by the Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, ITBP, BSF and BRO. Yoga Sagarmala will witness yoga along the Indian coastline. There will be a Yoga demonstration on the upper deck of the INS Vikrant.&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Har Aangan Yoga</strong></p>
<p>The goal of this year's International Day of Yoga 2023, is to achieve observation of Yoga at the village level through Anganwadis, Health and wellness centres and educational institutions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Yoga has now become the way I start my day. It gives me a fresh start to the day and clears my mind. It makes me feel centred and calms my mind. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Yoga will calm you down and energise you for the entire day and really does energise me for the entire day. Yoga is a great way for me to stay in shape and is great for my mind and body.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Keep an open mind because yoga doesn&rsquo;t fit in any preconceived notions and in case you need any extra motivation, then find a friend to do it with.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Firstly, I hold myself accountable by telling everyone and secondly, I enjoy finding a friend to do Yoga with.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ahead of International Day of Yoga on June 21, students of Pune's Azam Campus were seen practising Yoga on Monday. In an open ground of the campus, girl students clad in burqas worked on their asanas. It was a mix of school and college students from various institutes of Azam Campus. Boys too followed suit and worked on their Yoga skills.&nbsp;</p>
<p>On June 21, Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is on a 2-day visit to Karnataka will take part in Yoga day activities organised by the Department of Ayurveda, Unani, Sidda and Homoeopathy (AYUSH). The theme of this year's International Day of Yoga is "Yoga for Humanity". The theme portrays how yoga served humanity in alleviating suffering during the Covid pandemic.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Integrating the 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav' with the the yoga day, the Prime Minister's Office said mass yoga demonstrations will be organised at 75 iconic locations across the country under the leadership of 75 Union ministers, with PM Modi attending the exercise at Mysore. &nbsp;The yoga demonstrations will also be held by various educational, social, political, cultural, religious, corporate and other civil society organisations and will be attended by crores of people across the country, it said.</p>
<p>Modi's yoga programme is also part of the novel programme 'Guardian Yoga Ring', which is a collaborative exercise between 79 countries and United Nations organisations along with Indian missions abroad to illustrate yoga's unifying power surpassing boundaries.</p>
<p>As the sun moves from the east to the west across the world, the mass yoga demonstrations in the participating countries, if seen from any one point on the earth, will seem to be happening one after the other, almost in tandem, thus underlining the concept of 'One sun, one earth'.&nbsp;</p>
