A suspected ISI agent was arrested on Sunday for allegedly supplying vital information about Indian military establishments to his handlers in Pakistan, an official statement said.
"Raees, a resident of Gonda, was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS). He was summoned to the ATS headquarters and during interrogation, he confessed to his involvement in spying," Prashant Kumar, Special DG (Law and Order), said in a statement. According to police, Raees came in contact with one Armaan in Mumbai who persuaded him to spy against India. He was also promised money and a job in Dubai by a Pakistani citizen.
In 2022, Raees received a WhatsApp call from a foreign number and was asked to contact Hussain. He was then asked to send pictures of key military set-ups of India, police said, adding that one Salman and another unidentified man were also involved in the crime.
An FIR has been registered against Raees at the Lucknow ATS police station under IPC sections 121 A (waging or attempting to wage war) and 123 (concealing with intent to facilitate design to wage war), and under the Officials Secrets Act, 1923, he said.
Police added that efforts are on to arrest Armaan and Salman.

Terrorist groups whose names have never been heard before, claim responsibility for bloody attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. In Punjab, a man who was living in Dubai for more than 10 years, suddenly emerges, becomes the chief of a fledgling organisation, and starts talking about separating the state from India.
With suspicion growing that Pakistan's spy agency ISI has been propping up Amritpal Singh, Punjab appears to be witnessing a repeat of Islamabad's playbook already used in Kashmir, and even Myanmar.
Ever since the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status in 2019, the state-turned-Union Territory has seen mushrooming of several terror organisations. But these are actually just old outfits with new names, according to authorities.
The most prominent of these is The Resistance Front, which is an off-shoot of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, and some fighters drawn from other established terror groups like Hizbul Mujahideen and Jaish-e-Mohammad, as per intel agencies. Since 2020, TRF has been taking responsibility for many attacks, with other groups conspicuously silent.
Some of the other rechristened outfits are the People's Anti-Fascist Front, Jammu &amp; Kashmir Ghaznavi Force, Kashmir Tigers, and Kashmir Janbaaz Force.
Giving a new identity to old terror groups is a calculated move by Pakistan. One of the biggest reasons behind this was growing pressure on the country to crack down on terror financing by the global watchdog FATF. Another reason was to try to get international support for the terrorists by trying to show them as secular, local rebels, instead of religious warriors. Thus, names like Resistance Front and Anti-Fascist Front. But channels for funding and logistics stayed the same, as per reports.
The same strategy was reportedly used by Pakistan while creating radical Rohingya outfits in Myanmar, as per intel sources.
Now, Islamabad appears to be trying to implement its strategy in Punjab.
The state already has terror outfits operational for decades. These include Babbar Khalsa - the oldest Sikh militant group since Independence - which stormed back into headlines in 2022 after a grenade attack at the police's intelligence headquarters in Mohali. Around 9 groups, with operatives in 6 countries, have been trying to cause violence and spread terror in Punjab, according to a recent assessment.
And yet, it was a relative nobody who has allegedly been propped up by Islamabad to become the face of the artificially-propagated Khalistan movement. When Amritpal came back to India from Dubai in August 2022, he mysteriously became the chief of a young organisation named Waris Punjab De, which had been created by late actor-turned-activist Deep Sidhu. Beyond this, Amritpal was allegedly trying to create a new militia by the name of Anandpur Khalsa Fauj, according to sources cited in news reports.
Pakistan was removed from the FATF's grey list in October 2022. The developments in Punjab appear to be a sign of growing confidence in the Pakistan Army and ISI in this strategy of plausible deniability. More importantly, it shows Islamabad's desperation to get international attention on India-related issues - a move which has failed to get traction so far.

The Indore Police have detained a 40-year-old man, who stayed in China and Hong Kong between 2005 and 2018, on the suspicion of having links with Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency and terrorist organisations, an official said on Tuesday.
Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra said the Indore Police apprehended the man, named Sarfaraz, following an input from the National Investigation Agency and he was being questioned.
Indore's Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajat Saklecha, while refusing to name the suspect, said they had received an input from the Mumbai Police and the NIA that the man was suspected to be having links with the ISI and terrorist organisations.
The man was residing in Indore's Chandan Nagar police station limits, he said, adding the suspect was being questioned.
&ldquo;This person has worked in China and Hong Kong between 2005 and 2018. During interrogation, the man in his defense said his case of divorce with a Chinese woman was underway in China and that her lawyer had made a false complaint against him to the Indian intelligence agencies,&rdquo; the official said.
The Indore Police were conducting an investigation pertaining to this person from all angles in coordination with all the central and state agencies concerned, he said.
The police have yet not reached to any final conclusion about him, the official added.

Indian Army to court martial soldier caught spying for Pak's ISI: report

The Army is going to start summary court-martial proceedings against its soldier who was allegedly caught passing on secret information to an ISI agent- posted in the Pakistan embassy in the national capital, about military activities along the northern borders.
"The accused Signalman (washerman) Alim Khan was posted in a formation close to the border with China in the field area and was allegedly caught supplying secret information to the Pakistani spy posted in their embassy in New Delhi. The summary court-martial proceedings against the soldier will begin in the next couple of days," the defence sources told ANI.
The soldier was caught by the security agencies supplying secret information to the Pakistani spy- Abid Husain alias Naik Abid- a Pakistani national working in the High Commission for the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in the national capital. The soldier was also given Rs 15,000 by the Pakistan embassy official for information that he was sharing with them.

With the Pakistan Army undergoing a major leadership change, the US has said that it views a "prosperous" and "democratic" Pakistan as critical to its interests, and it wants to continue working with Islamabad to promote stability in the region.

"The United States values our longstanding cooperation with Pakistan and has always viewed a prosperous and democratic Pakistan as critical to US interests," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters at a news conference here on Wednesday when asked about Gen. Munir's appointment as the Chief of Staff of Pakistan Army.
"We look forward to continuing to work with Pakistan to promote stability, prosperity for the people of Pakistan and the region," she said.
Relations between the US and Pakistan have nosedived in recent times after former prime minister Imran Khan blamed Washington for orchestrating the Opposition&rsquo;s no-confidence motion against him in April this year.
The US has denied these allegations.
The former cricketer-turned-politician has claimed the foreign conspiracy was because of his independent foreign policy on Islamabad&rsquo;s ties with countries like China and Russia and funds were being channelled from abroad to oust him from power.
Critics accuse Khan of further jeopardising the country&rsquo;s economic outlook by damaging relations with the US, IMF and other international partners on whom cash-strapped Pakistan depends for financing.

The Islamic country's first premier Liaqat Ali Khan was shot dead in the middle of a big public event on 16 October 1951. Here are the five things which still do not add up in the case.
The most curious thing is that the Pakistani government was giving the assassin - an Afghani named Said Akbar - Rs 450 every month as welfare allowance. The payment had been started by the British colonial government.
On the day of the murder, the assassin was sitting right in front of stage, on a seat meant for CID police officers. In the 70 years since, it has never been ascertained how the assassin got access to a front-row seat at the event.
The shooter was apparently alone, but police shot and killed him instead of capturing and questioning him. Strangely, the first investigative committee that the Pakistani government created did not look into the murder plot, but focused on security failure.
The murder case of Benazir Bhutto was full of even more bungled-up actions, unanswered questions, and mysterious deaths. The former PM was killed on 27 December 2007. The attacker first shot at her, then blew himself up.
Shockingly, the fire department hurriedly washed the crime scene, ruining important evidence. Subsequently, Bhutto's security guard, who had made suspicious gestures at the event, was killed in 2008. Two suspects who allegedly helped the assassin were killed a month after Bhutto's death.
Two other men, who had allegedly helped with preparation and transportation of the suicide vest, were killed in 2008 and 2010. Chillingly, a government lawyer who had claimed to have been making progress in the case, was killed in 2013.
Soon after the assassination, five suspects had confessed to being part of the murder plot. They later withdrew their confessions, but police gathered proof against them, including DNA evidence. However, the court said that there had been procedural errors in the collection of evidence. Subsequently, all 5 accused were acquitted.
Only two police officials were punished for ordering washing of the crime scene. Interestingly, former President of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf was also charged in the case, but proceedings stalled as he was in self-exile.
While odd happenings in the two murders might only hint at the possible role of Pakistan's so-called 'deep state', Imran Khan is not being subtle with his allegations.
Imran Khan's party PTI has blamed top political and military leaders for the gun attack during a protest march. Khan has openly accused Pakistan's current PM Shehbaz Sharif of masterminding the attack. He has also accused federal interior minister Rana Sanaullah, and Maj Gen Faisal Naseer, who is the head of counter-intelligence at spy agency ISI.
While Imran Khan's party has claimed inside information for the allegations, it is yet to offer any evidence. Also, the shooter has reportedly claimed that he was working alone.

Pakistan's ISI chief Lt Gen Nadeem Ahmed Anjum said on Thursday that Army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa was given a "lucrative offer" in March by the then government amidst the political turmoil, as the powerful top spy launched a veiled attack on ousted premier Imran Khan at an unprecedented press conference.
"I am aware that you are surprised by my presence," Lt Gen Anjum told reporters in the first-ever media interaction by any ISI chief in Pakistan's history.
The press conference came as the country was grappling with different versions about the killing of journalist Arshad Sharif in Kenya and indirect allegations against the armed forces.
Sharif was shot dead at a police checkpoint at an hour&rsquo;s distance from Nairobi on Sunday night, creating a storm in the country. The Kenyan police later said it was a case of &ldquo;mistaken identity&rdquo; during a search for a similar car involved in a child abduction case.
"As chief of this agency (Inter-Services Intelligence or ISI), I cannot remain silent when they are targeted for no reason," he said, nearly seven months after the the government led by cricketer-turned-politician Khan was ousted after a no-confidence motion was passed by the National Assembly amidst political turmoil and allegations of US interference.
Lt Gen Anjum said the nation had given him the responsibility to take secrets to the grave. "But when needed and when necessary, I will bring those facts to light".
He said the officers, including Quetta Corps commander, killed in Lasbela areas of Balochistan in a helicopter crash were mocked.
He said words like "neutral and janwar" were used against the army to illustrate that the institution was indulging in sedition.

These words were also being used because the institution refused to bend to an "unconstitutional and illegal act", the ISI chief said in hard hitting words. He, however, didn&rsquo;t explain the illegal acts.
Lt Gen Anjum said that in March there was "a lot of pressure" but the institution and the army chief Gen Bajwa decided to limit the military to its constitutional role.
In March, Gen Bajwa was given a "lucrative offer" for an indefinite extension in his tenure, he said. "It was made in front of me. He (Gen Bajwa) rejected it because he wanted the institution to move forward from a controversial role to a constitutional role," the ISI chief said, without naming former premier Khan.
Bajwa, who is on a three-year extension, is set to retire next month.
"Last year, the establishment decided that it would restrict itself to its constitutional role [...] The army had an intense discussion and we reached the conclusion that the country's benefit lies in us restricting ourselves to our constitutional role and remaining out of politics,&rdquo; he said.
Recalling that the army chief was called a traitor and his family was also targeted, the ISI chief asked, "If you see him as a traitor, then why do you meet him through the back door?" "You meet quietly at night through the back door and express your unconstitutional wishes but call [the army chief] a traitor in broad daylight. That's a big contradiction between your words and your actions,&rdquo; he said, in a veiled attack on former prime minister Khan.
He confirmed that slain journalist Sharif was in contact with the military establishment even when he was out of the country and Pakistan was not convinced about the story of his killing.
"Perhaps we and the government are not fully convinced. That's why the government has formed a team that will head to Kenya,&rdquo; he said.
Military spokesperson Maj Gen Babar Iftikhar, who accompanied the ISI chief, appealed to the people to trust their institutions.
"We can make mistakes, but can never be a traitor or conspirator. The army is nothing without the people," Iftikhar said. "If we have made mistakes in the past, we have been washing them with our blood for the past twenty years. We will never fail the people of Pakistan, this is our promise." He said the Army wanted facts to come out about the killing of journalist Sharif.
Sharif, a former reporter and TV anchor with ARY TV, and known for his proximity to former prime minister Khan, had fled to Kenya after he was booked on charges of sedition and peddling &ldquo;anti-state&rdquo; narrative by Pakistan's security agencies earlier this year.
Khan, who came to power in 2018 with promises to create a &lsquo;Naya Pakistan&rsquo;, apparently lost support of the powerful Army after he refused to endorse the appointment of the ISI chief last year.
Finally, Khan agreed but it soured his ties with the army, which has ruled the coup-prone country for more than half of its 75 years of existence and has hitherto wielded considerable power in the matters of security and foreign policy.
The ISI is Pakistan's powerful spy agency. In 1950, it was officially given the task of safeguarding Pakistani interests and national security, inside and outside the country.
At the outset of the press conference, Maj Gen Iftikhar said the purpose of the media interaction was to shed light on the killing of journalist Sharif and the circumstances surrounding it.
He said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was informed of the sensitivity of today&rsquo;s press conference.
Calling late Sharif as an "icon of journalism", the spokesperson said that he belonged to a military family whose father and brother served in armed forces of the country. He termed the death of Sharif as an &ldquo;unfortunate incident&rdquo; and said the presser was necessary to distinguish "facts, fiction and opinion&rdquo;.
Maj Gen Iftikhar said that a false narrative was built around the so-called cypher conspiracy when there was none and the army had informed the political leadership about it.
He said that late Sharif had met Khan several times who fed him about the cypher story. "As a result, it was stated that he was shown meeting minutes and the cypher,&rdquo; he said, adding that facts between his death and the cypher story should be determined.
"It was surprising for us when on March 27 a piece of paper was waved and an attempt was made to build a narrative that was far from reality,&rdquo; he said, adding the journalists were given wrong information to defame Pakistan.

&nbsp;Imran Khan on Friday said he will remain "silent" as he does not want to "damage" the country and its institutions, a day after the ISI chief said the former prime minister made a "lucrative offer" to Pakistan Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa in return for backing his government during the political turmoil in March this year.
Addressing his party supporters at Lahore's famous Liberty Chowk after launching his protest march towards Islamabad demanding early elections, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief said his march is not for politics or personal interest but to gain real freedom and ensure that all decisions were made in Pakistan and not in London or Washington.
"My only aim is to free my nation and turn Pakistan into a free country," Khan, standing atop a container, said.
Khan rejected ISI chief Lt Gen Nadeem Ahmed Anjum's allegations in an unprecedented press conference on Thursday, saying it was one-sided and he only &ldquo;talked about Iman Khan&rdquo; and never uttered a word against the &ldquo;thieves&rdquo; in the government.
&ldquo;DG ISI, listen carefully, the things I know, I am staying silent for my institutions and the country. I don&rsquo;t want to damage my country,&rdquo; the PTI chief said as the crowd cheered.
&ldquo;Our criticism is for constructive purposes and for your improvement. I can say more but will not say as it will hurt the institution,&rdquo; he said.

Punjab Police on 14 August said that a terror module backed by Pakistan's spy agency ISI was busted, and 4 persons were arrested. The alleged terrorists are associated with Canada-based gangster Arsh Dalla and Australia-based Gurjant Dalla, as per police.

Rinda is one of the main suspects in the attack on Punjab Police's Intelligence headquarters in Mohali. The building had been hit by a grenade on May 9. Rinda is also believed to have had a hand in the terror attack in Nawanshahr on November 8, 2021. Crime Investigation Agency's building had been targeted in the attack. Alleged associates of Rinda had been held in May 2022 in a weapon smuggling case.
