Jairam Ramesh called BJP's claims on 'Sengol' "wholly and completely manufactured".

Amid a political tussle over the inauguration of the new Parliament building, the Congress has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of lying regarding the significance of the 'Sengol' sceptre.
The BJP said that the 'Sengol' was a symbol of the transfer of power from the British but was sidelined after independence by the Congress.
Former Union minister Jairam Ramesh retorted on May 26, 2023, by saying that there was no documented evidence of Mountbatten, Rajagopalachari or Nehru describing the sceptre as a symbol of power transfer.

VP Dhankhar criticises Rahul Gandhi's UK speech; Congress hits back with 'cheerleader' jibe

The Congress on Thursday hit out at Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar for his criticism of Rahul Gandhi's remarks in the UK, saying that the Rajya Sabha chairman is an umpire and cannot be a cheerleader for any ruling dispensation.
The Congress' reaction came after Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Dhankhar attacked Gandhi for his comments regarding microphones being turned off in Parliament, and said he would be on the "wrong side" of the Constitution if he stayed silent on the issue.
In a statement, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh noted that at an event on Thursday to mark the launch of a book, the vice president made certain remarks on Rahul Gandhi's speech delivered in the United Kingdom. &nbsp;"There are certain offices which require us to shed our prejudices, our party allegiances and compel us to rid ourselves of whatever propaganda we may have imbibed along the way.

The vice president's statement on Gandhi, therefore, was surprising to say the least, he said.
"He (Dhankhar) rushed to the defence of a government from which he is constitutionally required to be at arms-length and in a manner that was both confusing as well as disappointing," Ramesh said.
He said Rahul Gandhi has not said anything abroad that he has not said several times here. &nbsp;"And unlike certain other individuals, his stand does not vary depending on where he sits," Ramesh said.
The Congress leader argued that Gandhi's statement was factual and representative of the reality on the ground. &nbsp;
"Over the last two weeks, more than twelve Members of Parliament belonging to Opposition Parties have been served with Breach of Privilege Notices for protesting the suppression of their voices in Parliament on an issue that is inconvenient to the ruling regime," he said.
&nbsp;Over the last eight years, channels and newspapers have been blacked out, raided, and intimidated to the point that the only voice that is carried is that of the government, he alleged.

The Bharat Jodo Yatra has ensured that the Congress is now setting the political narrative in the country and the BJP has been made to play on a pitch prepared Congress, Ramesh said.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Sunday said the Bharat Jodo Yatra has ensured that the Congress is now setting the political narrative in the country and the BJP has been made to play on a pitch prepared by his party.
In an interview with PTI on the yatra completing 100 days, Ramesh also said that Rahul Gandhi is trying to sharpen the ideological basis of the Congress and is working along with the party's elected president, Mallikarjun Kharge, as a 'jugalbandi' (together).
Asked whether the party could undertake another such yatra next year, Ramesh said, "I would certainly love to participate in a Porbandar (Gujarat) to Parshuram Kund (Arunachal Pradesh) Yatra but whether we can do it next year and how we can do it next year, it has to be discussed and debated in appropriate party forums." The Congress general secretary in-charge communications asserted that through the Bharat Jodo Yatra, Gandhi has given a new direction to the political discourse and the Congress has set the narrative for the last 100 days.

"The Congress has been applauded, criticised, praised, reviled. What it means is that we were on the defensive, we were always reacting to what the BJP was saying or what it was doing but through the Bharat Jodo Yatra I think we have succeeded to a very large extent in being able to set the terms of debate and the narrative in the political discourse," Ramesh said.
He said the yatra has had an "electrifying internal effect" on the organisation as well as on the external world of Indian politics.
Ramesh claimed that due to the yatra, the BJP is on the "back foot, disturbed and nervous".
"I think we have succeeded in changing the terms of the debate. The narrative is on our pitch now. We are playing cricket against the BJP on a pitch that is prepared by us, we are not playing cricket against the BJP on a pitch prepared by them, that is the difference," he said.
Asked if Rahul Gandhi was now the conscience-keeper of the party, Ramesh said that's a strong word and one does not emerge as a conscience keeper through just one yatra.
