Earlier, the Biden administration warned of the "potential risk of sanctions" on those entities who are considering business deals with Iran.
"I did see some of the remarks which were made, but I think it's a question of communicating, convincing, and getting people to understand, that this is actually for everyone's benefit. I don't think people should take a narrow view of it," he said at the launch of the Bangla edition of his book 'Why Bharat Matters' in Kolkata.
"They have not done so in the past. So, if you look at the US' own attitude towards the port in Chabahar, the US has been appreciative of the fact that Chabahar has a larger relevance... we will work at it," he added.&nbsp;
Earlier, deputy spokesperson of the US State Department, Vedant Patel said, "We're aware of these reports that Iran and India have signed a deal concerning the Chabahar port. I will let the government of India speak to its own foreign policy goals vis-a-vis the Chabahar port as well as its own bilateral relationship with Iran."
"I will just say, as it relates to the United States, US sanctions on Iran remain in place and we'll continue to enforce them," he added.
When asked if Indian firms are also at risk of being sanctioned by the US, Patel said, "Any entity, anyone considering business deals with Iran, they need to be aware of the potential risk that they are opening themselves up to and the potential risk of sanctions."
The Chabahar port on the Gulf of Oman - which New Delhi had proposed to develop way back in 2003 - will provide Indian goods a gateway to reach landlocked Afghanistan and Central Asia using a road and rail project called International North-South Transport Corridor, bypassing Pakistan.

Delivering an address at Gargi College on Vishwa Bandhu Bharat in Delhi on April 8, the foreign minister said that expectations for reclaiming the PoK surged after the BJP government revoked Article 370.&nbsp;
"All I can say with respect to PoK, there is a parliament resolution, and every political party in the country is committed to ensuring that the PoK which is part of India returns to India&hellip;&rdquo; he said.&nbsp;
&ldquo;But I do want to say one thing, I didn&rsquo;t used to get people to ask us this 10 years ago or even 5 years ago. It is when we put 370 to rest, now people understand PoK is also important.&rdquo;
&ldquo;People just assumed that 370 (Article) can not be changed and this is something that we have to accept. Now once we change it, the entire ground situation changes.&rdquo;
The comments come days after Jaishankar on Sunday said that &ldquo;PoK has never been out of this country".&nbsp;
While responding to a question during an event in Cuttack in Odisha, he said that PoK "is part of this country. There is a resolution of the Indian Parliament that PoK is very much a part of India.&rdquo;&nbsp;

Jaishankar also exuded confidence in India becoming a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

&ldquo;We have to decide how you go through this very difficult period. And more importantly, who do you trust? Who do you want to see in charge of this country? Who do you think will take this country through this challenge?&rdquo; he added.
Highlighting on becoming a permanent member of United Nations Security Council, Jaishankar expressed confidence that India will become a member.

"I get a lot of these noises from the Western press and if they criticize our democracy, it's not because they lack information. It is because they think they are also political players in our election."
Citing an article he read in the Western media, Jaishankar said that they stated that in such a heatwave in India, why are they holding elections?
"Now I read that article and I wanted to say listen, in that heat my lowest turnout is higher than your highest turnout in the best run," Jaishankar said.
"These are politics. These are our domestic politics which is going global, global politics which feels they must now intrude in India. How can these chaps decide who should be ruling them without consulting us?" he said.
Jaishankar asserted, "They (West) actually think they are part of our electorate", adding, "I think it's time today that we disabuse them and the best way that we do that, is by confidence."
He emphasised the need to stand up to these kinds of attacks and criticisms and rankings and reports because they will question everything.
"They will question your election system, your EVM, your election commission, even the weather," he said.
"And one complaint is...BJP is so unfair, BJP thinks it's going to win very big," he said, adding that, in a kind of way, today, we are at a very important inflection point.

The previous UPA government decided "not to do anything" after the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks with the justification that "it would cost more to attack Pakistan than not attacking it", External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar claimed on Tuesday.
Describing India as a voice of the 'Global South' (comprising about 125 countries), he said the countries of the Global South trust India to take up their cause and positions in the world.
Addressing a gathering at a talk on 'Foreign Policy the India Way: From Diffidence to Confidence', the minister said that the country has a moral obligation towards some of the countries, which were under colonial rule and could not recover, rebuild as quickly as India did.
"We are a voice of the Global South, which is about a 125 countries in the world. These countries trust India to take up their cause, their positions in the world," he said.
He said India has some challenges at the borders and the key to defend them is not to just posture in public but to build infrastructure, support the military and create a system that will respond whenever the border is under threat.
In the "defensive era", terrorism was accepted, he said, referring to the previous UPA tenure.
"After Mumbai (attacks), the national security advisor of the previous UPA government wrote (that) 'we sat, we debated. We considered all the options. Then we decided to do nothing. We decided to do nothing and the justification was we felt the cost of attacking Pakistan was more than the cost of not attacking Pakistan', " he claimed, adding, "I leave you to judge."
Talking about how the foreign policy moved from the times of "diffidence" to confidence, he said, "we moved from diffidence to confidence when we crossed that line of control. And, we did it again, when we crossed the boundary to go and hit Balakot".
The country now deals with the United States much more confidently than it used to deal before, he said.
Asked should the country be exporting BrahMos missiles to other countries as well, after the Philippines, he said it is a very good example how Make in India and defence has got the country an important contact.
"But, it's not just BrahMos. It would be other equipment as well. I think this is new area that India is entering. (PM) Modi ji has been very strongly motivating our defence producers saying we are good enough today to go out in the world. So, I am very confident that our defence exports will grow," he said.&nbsp;

Earlier in the day,&nbsp; the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs released the fourth list of standardised geographical names in Zangnan, the Chinese name for Arunachal Pradesh which Beijing claims as part of south Tibet, state-run Global Times reported on Sunday.
The official website of the ministry posted 30 additional names for the region.
Set to take effect from May 1, the implementation measures stipulate in Article 13 that "place names in foreign languages that may harm China's territorial claims and sovereignty rights shall not be directly quoted or translated without authorisation," the report said.
The Chinese Civil Affairs Ministry released the first list of the standardised names of six places in Zangnan was released in 2017, while the second list of 15 places was issued in 2021 followed by another list with names for 11 places in 2023.
The recent statements by China to reassert its claims over the state started with Beijing lodging a diplomatic protest with India over Prime Minister Narendra Modi&rsquo;s visit to Arunachal Pradesh, where he dedicated to the nation the Sela Tunnel built at an altitude of 13,000 feet in Arunachal Pradesh.
The tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity to strategically located Tawang and is expected to ensure better movement of troops along the frontier region.
Chinese Foreign and Defence ministries have issued a flurry of statements to highlight China's claims over the area.

Russia is a country with which India has always had a positive relationship and both countries have taken extra care to look after each other's interests, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Sunday, as he dismissed the notion that Moscow is drifting towards China.
Interacting with the Indian community in Singapore, Jaishankar said India should look at its relationship with Russia or any other country from its perspective.
"So, tell me has Russia helped us or harmed us? Has Russia at crucial moments contributed or obstructed? Going ahead, are there gains to be made from Russia or is it only damages which will come out?" he asked.
&ldquo;So, if I do my calculations from my perspective and my experiences, I will get the answer. And the answer in this case is that Russia is a country with which we have always had a positive relationship,&rdquo; he said.
"Both India and Russia have taken that extra care to look after each other's interests. So, I think we should have that confidence as we go forward," he said while answering a question.
The ties between India and Russia remained strong notwithstanding Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. India has not yet condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and it has been maintaining that the crisis must be resolved through diplomacy and dialogue.
On a question on the US presidential election in November and India's equation with the country after that, Jaishankar said: "I prefer to be patient".
Jaishankar said he is confident that India can get along with whoever is President of the US.
Jaishankar is in Singapore on a three-day visit from Saturday.&nbsp;

In a first reaction over China's terrestrial claims on Beijing, India's External Affairs Minister Jaishankar called it ludicrous.

Jaishankar on March 23 termed China's repeated territorial claims over Arunachal Pradesh as "ludicrous" and asserted that the northeastern state was a natural part of India. Jaishankar's first reaction to the whole issue came while delivering a lecture at the Institute of South Asian Studies of the National University of Singapore.&nbsp;
Jaishankar, who is here on a three-day visit to Singapore, emphasised that Arunachal Pradesh was a "natural part of India."&nbsp;
"So, I think we've been very clear, very consistent on this. And I think you know that is something which will be part of the boundary discussions which are taking place," he said.
Responding to another question, Jaishankar said the challenge for India today is how to find the sustainable equilibrium between two rising powers, who also happen to be neighbours, and who have a history and a population, which sets them apart from the rest of the world and who also have capabilities.
"So this is a very, very complex challenge," he said.
Jaishankar said it came as a "great surprise" to India when the Chinese in 2020 "chose to do something on the border, which was completely violative of agreements we had reached".
The minister was referring to the Eastern Ladakh border standoff, which erupted on May 5, 2020, following a violent clash in the Pangong Lake area. The Eastern Ladakh standoff has resulted in a virtual freeze of bilateral ties on all fronts except trade. India has been pressing the People's Liberation Army to disengage from the Depsang and Demchok, maintaining that there cannot be restoration of normalcy in its relations with China as long as the state of the borders remains abnormal.
"Instead of actually solidifying the foundation for an equilibrium, they (the Chinese side) went and disturbed the condition," he said.
Jaishankar said the boundary solution can take its time. "We don't argue with that. It's a very complex issue. We're not talking about solving the boundary dispute. We are talking about maintaining peace and tranquillity on the border," he said.
<h2>On Pakistan</h2>
&nbsp;Underlining that Pakistan is sponsoring terrorism at almost an "industry level", Jaishankar asserted that the mood in India now is not to overlook terrorists and it "will not skirt this problem anymore".
"Every country wants a stable neighbourhood...if nothing else you want at least a quiet neighbourhood," he said in response to a question on India's ties with Pakistan.
However, unfortunately, it is not the same with India, he said.
Underlining that Pakistan has been sponsoring terrorism against India, Jaishankar asked, "How do you deal with a neighbour who does not hide the fact that they use terrorism as an instrument of statecraft?" "It's not a one-off happening...but very sustained, almost at an industry level...So what we have come to conclude is that we have to find a way of addressing (the menace), that dodging the problem gets us nowhere, it only invites more trouble," he said.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday suggested that the "short-sighted" approach of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council is holding back forward movement in the long-pending reform of the global body.
In an interactive session at the Raisina Dialogue, he said the "biggest" opponent for reform of the UN Security Council is not a Western country, in remarks seen as an oblique reference to China.
The external affairs minister said the sentiments for changes in the UN system is "very strong, but the challenge has been to get the concurrence for it from certain quarters".
"If you are going to ask five countries saying would you mind changing the rules that you would have less power, guess what the answer is going to be," he said.
"If they are wise, the answer would be something else. If they are short-sighted, the answer is what it is today," he said.
The five permanent members are Russia, the UK, China, France and the US and these countries can veto any substantive resolution.
There has been growing demand to increase the number of permanent members to reflect the contemporary global reality.
India, Brazil, South Africa, Germany and Japan are strong contenders for permanent membership of the UNSC which has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security.
"When the UN was invented, it had approximately 50 members. We have four times the members. So it is a common sense proposition that you can't continue the same way when you have four times the members," Jaishankar said.
Asked about various complex geopolitical challenges and diverse positions on them by key nations, he said the endeavour has to be to find middle ground.
If you take UN Security Council reform, the biggest opponent is not a Western country, Jaishankar said.
"So let's get the totality of the problem. I think the reality is we will have to battle bit by bit to create groups which will push for change," he said.
"On many issues, you will get different combinations of countries and we'll have to live with a long period of incremental progress before we get to some kind of landing point," he said.
The Raisina Dialogue is India's flagship conference on geopolitics and geo-strategy. The three-day conference began on Wednesday.
The theme of the three-day conference is "Chaturanga: Conflict, Contest, Cooperate, Create."

Jaishankar is in Germany to attend the prestigious Munich Security Conference, the world&rsquo;s leading forum for debate on international security.
"Nice to see Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki. Exchanged views on the current situation in Gaza," the minister posted on X, sharing a photograph of the meeting.
India has been pushing for a two-state solution to the Palestine issue for many decades.
During an interactive session at a security conference here on Saturday, Jaishankar underlined that an increasing number of countries are now not only supporting the two-state solution to the Palestine issue but seeing it as "more urgent" than before.
The minister described the October 7 attacks on Israeli cities by Hamas as "terrorism". At the same time, he said Israel has an international obligation to observe humanitarian law.
It is important that Israel should have been very mindful of civilian casualties, he said at the session, also attended by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.
Israel has been pushing ahead with its military offensive in Gaza as part of its retaliation to the unprecedented attack on Israeli cities by Hamas on October 7.
Hamas militants killed around 1,200 people in Israel and kidnapped more than 220 others some of whom were released during a brief ceasefire.
Over 25,000 people have been killed in Gaza in the Israeli offensive, according to Hamas-run authorities in Gaza.
India has been calling for de-escalation of the situation and creating conditions for an early resumption of direct peace negotiations towards a two-state solution to the Palestine issue.

"The life of every Indian citizen has become easier and this is because we have embraced technology in a very deep way. You can see this in payment, very few people today pay in cash and very few people accept cash...Today, we do as many cashless payments in India in a month as much as America does in three years," Mr Jaishankar said at the event.
Jaishankar identified five key examples illustrating India's transformation over the past decade, citing UPI, the 5G stack, and the successful handling of coronavirus vaccinations as notable advancements. He commended India's response to the Covid-19 pandemic during the interaction.
"For me, how a country deals with a challenge, recovers from the challenge, and is able to pose such a strong economic performance, how the life of an average citizen becomes better, how we are capable of something that captures the imagination of the world and how do we look after our people outside the country. These are five true examples of what changed in India in the last decade," Jaishankar said.

His remarks came on a day when a missile fired by Houthis struck a US-owned ship just off the coast of Yemen in the Gulf of Aden. A day earlier, Houthi fired an anti-ship cruise missile toward an American destroyer in the Red Sea, according to reports.
The US and the UK last week launched air strikes targeting the Houthi positions in Yemen.
India has been closely monitoring the unfolding situation in the Red Sea. The Indian Navy has already enhanced deployment of its frontline ships and surveillance aircraft for maritime security operations in view of the maritime environment in the critical sea lanes including the North and Central Arabian Sea.
Jaishankar, who is here as part of the ongoing high-level exchanges between the two sides, also said that both India and Iran are concerned about recent events in West Asia and emphasise the importance of preventing further escalation of violence and hostilities in the region.
He said the "deeply concerning" situation in Gaza was naturally a subject of discussion.
On the issue of Palestine, Jaishankar reiterated India&rsquo;s long standing support for a two-state solution, where the Palestinian people are able to live freely in an independent country within secure borders.

The United States has welcomed the "increased cooperation" with India in defending freedom of navigation in the Red Sea as the two countries discussed "shared concerns" over the reckless Houthi attacks in the region.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke Thursday and "discussed the United States and India's shared concerns over the reckless Houthi attacks in the southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, which threaten the free flow of commerce, endanger innocent mariners, and violate international law".
State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a statement that Blinken emphasised the Red Sea is a major commercial corridor that facilitates international trade and "welcomed increased cooperation with India in defending freedom of navigation in the region".
Jaishankar and Blinken also discussed the Israel-Hamas conflict, efforts to prevent the escalation and increase the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza. Blinken also discussed Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, the statement said.
In a post on X, Jaishankar said he had a "good discussion" with "my friend" Blinken.
"Our conversation focused on maritime security challenges, especially the Red Sea region. Appreciated his insights on ongoing situation in West Asia, including Gaza," Jaishankar said.
The Indian leader added that they exchanged perspectives on developments pertaining to the Ukraine conflict. "Looking forward to realizing our extensive cooperation agenda for 2024," Jaishankar said.
In a post on X, Miller said Blinken had a "productive call" with Jaishankar, "discussing U.S.-India partnership for protecting freedom of navigation in critical waterways".&nbsp;

Posting a video clip of his visit to the school on X, Jaishankar, currently on a five-day visit to Russia, wrote, "Their passion for India was truly moving. See for yourself." "Delighted to visit the School #653 named after Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore in St. Petersburg," he said.
In the video, the minister was seen being welcomed by the students dressed in both Indian and Russian traditional attire. He was also offered a traditional delicacy.
Jaishankar paid homage to a statue of Tagore installed in the school.
A cultural programme was also organised for the event.
Tagore had spent a significant amount of time in Russia, where he was influenced by its culture and literary traditions. His book 'Letters on Russia', written during his travels, vividly describes the details of the Soviet Russian scene of that time.
In another post on X, Jaishankar said that on Thursday evening, he met St Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov and "appreciated the support extended to promoting economic cooperation and people-to-people exchanges between India and Russia".
Before arriving here, Jaishankar visited Moscow where he held talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov. He also called on President Vladimir Putin and Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov.&nbsp;

Jaishankar on US temple vandalism: separatist forces must not get space outside India

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday expressed concern over the vandalism of a Hindu temple with anti-India graffiti in the US, and said extremists and separatist forces outside India should not get such space.
He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the third convocation of the Rashtriya Raksha University here.
"I have seen the news. As you know, we are concerned about this. Extremists and separatist forces outside India should not get space. Our consulate has lodged a complaint with the (US) government and the police there over whatever happened, and I believe the matter is being inquired," Jaishankar said in response to a query about the incident.
&nbsp;According to images posted on social media, the word 'Khalistan' was spray-painted on a signpost outside the temple along with other objectionable graffiti.
The Newark police said any acts or threats of violence, property damage, harassment, intimidation, or other crimes motivated by hate or bias are considered very serious and given very high priority. The Consulate General of India in San Francisco strongly condemned the defacing of the temple.
Talking about the arrest of Nikhil Gupta in Czech Republic over accusation that he was planning to assassinate US-based pro-Khalistan activist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in collaboration with an Indian official, the Union minister said the Indian embassy was provided consular access to him (by that country's government).
"Whenever an Indian citizen is arrested, we seek consular access for their care which we have received thrice," he said.

Over the absence of USA and Canada from the list of partner countries for the 10th Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, Jaishankar said he would not put any political meaning to this.
"At the government level, it depends who we invite...The government of Gujarat can answer (over invitation to the countries). I would not put any political meaning," the minister said.
"My understanding is opposite, which is that in fact many counties are calling us to participate in Vibrant Gujarat. We ask them to talk to the government of Gujarat. We would like to support it because we would like to see maximum participants," he said.

Jaishankar made the comments on Wednesday in response to questions during a conversation with veteran journalist Lionel Barber titled &lsquo;How a Billion People See the World' here.
"If you have a reason to make such an allegation, please share the evidence with us. We are not ruling out an investigation and looking at anything which they may have to offer. They haven't done so," Jaishankar, who was here on a five-day official visit to the UK, said while responding to a question.
The ties between India and Canada came under severe strain following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations in September of a "potential" involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on June 18 in British Columbia. India had designated Nijjar as a terrorist in 2020.
India has rejected Trudeau's allegations as "absurd" and "motivated".
"These people have been accommodated in Canadian politics. They are given the freedom to articulate their views," he said.

Jaishankar said that freedom of speech and freedom of expression comes with a certain responsibility and the misuse of those freedoms and the toleration of that misuse for political purposes would be very wrong, referring to the pro-Khalistani activities in Canada.
Jaishankar said that he was in touch with his Canadian counterpart Melanie Joly on the issue.
He recalled the attacks on the High Commission of India in Canada, or smoke bomb attacks on the High Commission and Consulate General, and said Indian diplomats were intimidated in public, with no action from the Canadian authorities against culprits.
When asked if Jaishankar thought Nijjar was a terrorist, the foreign minister replied: &ldquo;He has a track record which is there on the social media. That&rsquo;s a pretty graphic track record. I would let everyone form their own opinions.&rdquo; Giving a comparison, Jaishankar said people know of the 1988 Lockerbie bombing but India faced a bigger incident involving Khalistani terrorists who threatened three Air India flights.
Last week, Prime Minister Trudeau underlined that a "fight" with India was not something Canada wanted to be having right now but reiterated his allegations and said Ottawa wants to "work constructively" with New Delhi on this "very serious matter".
Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said India has conveyed to the US side its serious concerns over increasing activities of pro-Khalistani elements in Canada.
"Insofar as Canada is concerned, we have been having very consistent conversations with all our friends and partners. Our position on this matter has been enunciated and explained in full detail on multiple occasions," Kwatra said in New Delhi recently.

Days after Trudeau's allegations in September, India temporarily suspended the issuance of visas to Canadian citizens and asked Ottawa to downsize its diplomatic presence in the country to ensure parity.
India resumed some visa services in Canada last month, more than a month after they were suspended.
On China, Jaishankar said that the 2020 deadly clash in the Galwan Valley has vitiated the relationship between the two countries.
He said China did not adhere to the agreements of 1993 and 1996 not to amass troops at the Line of Actual Control as he asserted that such acts of not following pacts have consequences in terms of credibility.
"It is important that agreements are kept. And then that doesn't happen that has consequences in terms of credibility and cost," he said.
On updates on resolving the border issue with China, Jaishankar said: "Since September 2020, we have solved a number of these situations, but there are some which are still under discussion. So this is still under discussion." On another question, he said India helped in managing global inflation through a strategic approach to oil purchases amid the Russia-Ukraine war.
While the West imposed sanctions and restrictions on Russia&rsquo;s oil exports since its war on Ukraine, India's refiners have been snapping up discounted Russian oil.
&ldquo;So we've actually softened the oil markets and the gas markets through our purchase policies. We have, as a consequence, actually managed global inflation. I'm waiting for the thank you,&rdquo; Jaishankar said.
The minister underlined India's strategic approach to oil purchases as a crucial factor in preventing a potential surge in global oil prices, thereby safeguarding the country's position in the international market against European competition.
"When it comes to the purchase...I think the global oil prices would have gone higher because we would have gone into the same market to the same suppliers that Europe would have done and as we discovered Europe would have outpriced us," Jaishanakar said.
&ldquo;We saw that in the LNG markets where actually many supplies which were traditionally coming into Asia were diverted to Europe and in fact at least India was a big enough country to command some respect in the markets but there were much smaller countries who didn't even get responses to their tender in Paris because the LNG suppliers were no longer interested in dealing with them," he said.
Speaking on America's power in the context of the changing world, Jaishankar said that America today is "reinventing itself" and becoming more open which is shaping the Indo-Pacific and creating multilateral bodies like the Quad.
"I would say a divided America or a divided country would obviously be a less effective player on the international scene...America is the premier power of our times...I would say America has been actually, in the last few years, quite effective abroad in a variety of ways...I would say America today is a power which is reinventing itself. I don't think it's a power which is declining," he said.
On India's relations with Taiwan amid tensions with China, Jaishankar said, "We have substantial technology and economic and commercial relations with Taiwan and certainly Taiwan has a reputation when it comes to electronics and of course, more recently with semiconductors. So, there has been an upswing in the levels of cooperation." On another question, Jaishankar said that the tolerance in India has not gone down but Indians today are "more authentic" and less hypocritical about their beliefs, traditions and culture.
"For us, secularism does not mean being non-religious, but equal respect to all faiths. But what happened...we got into vote bank politics, a minoritarian pandering, that created backlash..In the name of equality of all religions, the biggest religion had to be self-deprecatory, and play itself down," he said.
"I'll say we are more Indian, we are more authentic," he said.&nbsp;

India invoked the provision of parity in Canada's diplomatic presence in the country in view of concerns over interference in New Delhi's affairs by Canadian personnel, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Sunday.
The external affairs minister also said that India is likely to resume the issuance of visas to Canadians if it sees progress in the safety of Indian diplomats in Canada.
The ties between India and Canada came under severe strain following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations last month of a "potential" involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June.
Days after Trudeau's allegations, India announced temporarily suspending the issuance of visas to Canadian citizens and asked Ottawa to downsize its diplomatic presence in the country.
"If we see progress in safety of our diplomats in Canada, we would like to resume issuance of visas there," Jaishankar said at an event while replying to a question on India-Canada ties.
On downsizing Canada's diplomatic presence in India, he said diplomatic parity is very much provided for in the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations. &nbsp;"Parity is very much provided for by the Vienna Convention, which is the relevant international rule on this. In our case, we invoked parity because we had concerns about continuous interference in our affairs by Canadian personnel," Jaishankar said.
Canada has already withdrawn 41 of its diplomats from India.

In an address at an event, Jaishankar, delving into geopolitical upheavals witnessing the world, said the ripple impact of what is taking place right now in the Middle East is still not entirely clear.
The external affairs minister said the consequences of various conflicts in a globalised world spread far beyond immediate geographies while citing the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war.
"In different regions, there are smaller happenings whose impact is not inconsequential," he said.
Talking about the challenge of dealing with various forms of violence, Jaishankar said, "There is also the less formal version that is very pervasive. I am speaking about terrorism which has long been honed and practised as a tool of statecraft." "The basic takeaway for all of us is that given the seamlessness of our existence, any expectation that conflicts and terrorism can be contained in their impact is no longer tenable," Jaishankar said.
"A big part of this is clearly economic, but do not underestimate the danger of metastasis when it comes to radicalism and extremism," he added.
