The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board has greenlit the installation of a ropeway designed to ease access for senior citizens, children, and others unable to trek the 13-km route to the temple. The ropeway will begin at Tarakot Marg and end at Sanjichat, allowing pilgrims to cover the journey in just six to seven minutes.
However, the Vyapar Mandal has raised concerns that the ropeway&rsquo;s construction will bypass key religious stops, such as Banganga, Charan Paduka, and Adhkuwari, potentially disrupting business for local shopkeepers along the traditional path to the temple. Additionally, operators of ponies and palkis (palanquins) have voiced objections to the project, prompting plans for a protest.
This isn&rsquo;t the first demonstration by the local community. In November, shopkeepers protested for four days against the project, during which tensions flared and stones were thrown at police. The then-District Magistrate, Vishesh Pal Mahajan, visited the area and assured the protesters that their concerns would be addressed by December 15. However, Mahajan's transfer soon followed, and shopkeepers suspect that his decision to delay the ropeway project was a factor in his reassignment.
In response to the ongoing controversy, shops in Katra will remain closed on Wednesday as part of the protest, with local residents backing the strike. Additionally, all political parties in the region, except the BJP, have come together to support the action.

The encounter started after the troops of Rashtriya Rifles and Special Operations Group of J-K Police launched a joint cordon and search operation at Dhari Gote Urarbagi in the Desa forest area around 7.45 pm, they said.
They said four army personnel, including an officer, and a police personnel were injured in the exchange of fire which initially lasted for over 20 minutes.
The injured were evacuated to hospital and their condition was stated to be &ldquo;critical&rdquo;, the officials said.
The Army said that additional troops were moved into the area and the operation was continuing when reports last came in.
The operation was launched on an input about the presence of terrorists, the officials said.
A police spokesperson confirmed the exchange of fire between the security forces and terrorists in the Desa forest area but said that &ldquo;further details are awaited.&rdquo; "Based on specific intelligence inputs, a joint operation by Indian Army and JKP was in progress in the general area North of Doda.
"Contact with terrorists was established tonight at about 2100 h in which heavy firefight ensued. Initial reports suggest injuries to our bravehearts.
"Additional troops have been moved into the area. Operations are continuing," the Army's 16 Corps, also known as White Knight Corps, posted on X.&nbsp;

The terrorists hurled a grenade and opened fire targeting Army vehicles which were on a routine patrol on the Machedi-Kindli-Malhar road at around 3.30 pm near Badnota village in Lohai Malhar, 150 km from Kathua town.
Security forces retaliated but the terrorists fled into the nearby forest, the officials said, adding an intermittent exchange of firing was going on between the terrorists and security forces when the last reports were received.
They said reinforcements have been rushed to the area to neutralise the terrorists, who are believed to have recently infiltrated from across the border and were moving to the higher reaches.
"A total of 10 troopers were injured and four of them later succumbed to their injuries," an official said.
This was the second major incident in Kathua district in the past four weeks.
On June 12 and 13, two terrorists and a CRPF jawan were killed in a fierce gunfight during a search and cordon operation.
The terror attack comes within a fortnight of a gunfight between terrorists and security forces in the Gandoh area of Doda district that left three foreign terrorists dead on June 26.
Jammu has witnessed a spurt in terror activities, attributed by authorities to an attempt by Pakistani handlers to revive terrorism in the region and disturb the peaceful atmosphere.

"The bodies of two terrorists were recovered from the Modergam encounter site while four bodies were recovered from the Chinnigam site on Sunday," they said.
The twin encounters in the two villages of Kulgam district began on Saturday.
Two army soldiers, including an elite para commando, laid down their lives while battling the terrorists, the officials said.
Speaking about the operations, Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police RR Swain said the neutralisation of such a big number of terrorists was a major achievement.
"Undoubtedly, this is a big milestone in the efforts towards strengthening the security environment. These successes are very meaningful both substantively as well as in terms of messaging," he said.
The success of the operations is an indication that the fight for elimination of terror in Jammu and Kashmir will reach its end, Swain said.
"This is an indication that the security architecture and involvement of people is leading to the flow of human intelligence and this fight (against terror) will be taken to its logical conclusion," he added.

They said contact with terrorists was established during a cordon and search operation in the Frisal Chinnigam area of Kulgam. In the exchange of fire there so far, four terrorists have been killed, the officials said, adding their bodies have been sighted.
Drone footage of the encounter site has shown four bodies lying there, but they could not be retrieved yet as firing was still going on, the officials said.
The operation is on, the officials added.
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, V K Birdhi, who visited the encounter site, said the operation will continue.
&ldquo;Some bodies (of terrorists) have been sighted, but the encounter has not concluded yet,&rdquo; he told reporters.
The site of the encounter is not near the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway but in the interior areas of the district, the IGP said.
He said the J-K Police and security forces continue to keep track of the movement of terrorists and the killing of these terrorists is a significant achievement for the security forces.
Earlier, a gunfight broke out in Modergam village of the south Kashmir district after security forces launched a cordon and search operation there following specific inputs about the presence of terrorists, the officials said.

&ldquo;They will work only on anti-infiltration and anti-terrorism fronts and they will not be deployed as PSOs (personal security officers) or in the office or for any other extra work,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;There are strict restrictions on them," he added.
&ldquo;Their supervisory officers too have been strictly instructed that they cannot be shifted to other jobs than their original anti-infiltration and anti-terrorism work. You will deploy them only on anti-infiltration and anti-terrorism work so that the general area security gets enhanced and it becomes extremely difficult for the adversary to infiltrate and spread terror,&rdquo; DGP Swain said.
He further said that these policemen are &ldquo;very young&rdquo; and that they know the area well and also understand the tactics of the enemy.&nbsp;
&ldquo;They are our own boys and they are not from places from outside Jammu and Kashmir &ndash; not even from other districts of J&amp;K, but from the respective border tehsils only,&rdquo; he said.

"One terrorist has been killed in the ongoing anti-infiltration Operation that was launched on 22 Jun in the Uri Sector; Operations are continuing," Srinagar-based Chinar Corps said in a post on X.
The security forces had launched an operation in Gohallan area of Uri sector on Saturday after noticing suspicious movement of two men near the LoC. Sources had said two terrorists were believed to have been killed. However, only body of one terrorist has been recovered so far.

Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday announced that they have arrested a person in connection with the Reasi terror attack.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Reasi senior superintendent of police Mohita Sharma said that the arrested person, who has been identified as Hakim, provided logistics to the terrorists for the attack.&nbsp;
"One terror associate formally arrested in the Reasi terror attack. He's not the mastermind but played an important role in the attack," Reasi senior superintendent of police, Mohita Sharma told reporters.
Additionally SSP Mohita said that "around 150 people have been arrested in connection with this case." "We have arrested the terrorist from Bandrahi in Rajouri district. I reached the spot of the incident after 1.5 hours but the local police reached the spot immediately and were involved in the rescue of the injured."
"Since it was the day of the swearing-in ceremony of the new govt and India-Pakistan match, so we were on alert. We did not get any specific input regarding this attack, " she added.
The terror attack happened on June 9 when terrorists opened fire on a bus carrying pilgrims to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. The bus later crashed into a gorge, leaving nine people dead and 41 injured.
The pilgrims were mostly from Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi.

Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Aragam area of Bandipora district late on Sunday night following information about presence of ultras there, the officials said.
They said a gunfight broke out as the terrorists opened fire on security forces positions.

The home minister was given a thorough briefing on the prevailing situation in Jammu and Kashmir where security forces are expected to intensify counter-terror operations in the coming days.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday reviewed the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of several terror incidents in the region recently, sources said.
The home minister also reviewed the preparations for the annual Amarnath pilgrimage scheduled to begin on June 29.
Sources said the home minister has been given a thorough briefing on the prevailing situation in Jammu and Kashmir where security forces are expected to intensify counter-terror operations in the coming days.
The operations against the terrorists will be carried out in line with the prime minister's directive, they said.
Shah presided over the high-level meeting here at North Block, three days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a similar meeting where he directed officials to deploy the "full spectrum of counter-terror capabilities" after a spate of terror incidents, including an attack on a bus carrying pilgrims.
National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha, Army Chief General Manoj Pande, Army Chief-designate Lt. General Upendra Dwivedi, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, Director of Intelligence Bureau Tapan Deka, Director General of CRPF Anish Dayal Singh, DG of BSF Nitin Agarwal, Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police R R Swain and other top security officials attended the meeting.
Earlier at a meeting on Friday last, Shah was briefed about the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, the deployment of forces along the International Border and Line of Control, infiltration attempts, the status of ongoing anti-terror operations and the strength of terrorists operating in the Union Territory, the sources said.
Terrorists struck at four places in Reasi, Kathua and Doda districts of Jammu and Kashmir within four days last week, killing nine pilgrims and a CRPF jawan and leaving seven security personnel and several others injured.
Two suspected Pakistani terrorists were also killed in an encounter with security forces in Kathua district.
On June 9, terrorists opened fire on a 53-seater bus carrying pilgrims when it was en route to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra from the Shiv Khori temple.
The bus, ferrying pilgrims from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi, plunged into a deep gorge following the gunfire, killing nine people and injuring 41 others. On June 11, terrorists fired at a joint checkpost of the Rashtriya Rifles and police at Chattergalla in Bhaderwah while a search party in the Gandoh area of Doda district was attacked on June 12, resulting in injuries to seven security personnel, including a policeman.
On June 13, Modi spoke to the home minister and discussed the deployment of security forces and counter-terror operations.
The prime minister also spoke to the Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor as well and took stock of the situation in the Union Territory.
Sinha briefed him on the efforts being undertaken by the local administration.
In the meeting, the prime minister was given a full overview of the security-related situation in the region and was apprised of the counter-terror efforts being undertaken.
The attacks took place ahead of the annual pilgrimage to the shrine of Amarnath, located at a height of 3,880 metres in the south Kashmir Himalayas, which will begin on June 29 and will continue till August 19.
The Amarnath pilgrims travel through two routes -- Baltal and Pahalgam -- in Jammu and Kashmir.
Sources said last year over 4.28 lakh people visited the shrine and the figure could go up to five lakh this time.
All pilgrims are expected to be given RFID cards so that their real-time location can be traced and everyone will be given Rs 5 lakh insurance cover.
There will also be an insurance cover of Rs 50,000 for each animal carrying the pilgrims.
Shah has been stressing on providing smooth arrangements on the route from the airport and railway station to the pilgrimage base camp and proper security of all pilgrims, the sources said.

In his address at the Friday congregation at the historic Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta area here, he felicitated the Kashmiri Pandit community on the occasion of Mela Kheer Bhawani.
Thousands of Kashmiri Pandits paid obeisance at the Mata Kheer Bhawani temple at Tulmulla in central Kashmir's Ganderbal district on Friday.
Mela Kheer Bhawani -- an annual event at the Kheer Bhawani temple dedicated to Rangya Devi -- is also celebrated in other shrines and temples in Jammu and Kashmir to mark 'Zyeth Atham' or 'Jyeshtha Ashtami'.
A large number of Kashmiri Pandits left their homes and fled the valley in 1990 in the wake of the eruption of militancy in the region.
The Mirwaiz said the community should return to their homeland which awaits them.
"Today is Mela Kheer Bhawani and I would like to felicitate our Kashmiri Pandit community on this occasion. I would also once again ask them to return to their homeland which awaits them and live here as they did in the past in our common and shared heritage. It is time to reconcile and rebuild the broken bonds. We owe it to our next generation," he said.
Referring to the incident of two people allegedly consuming liquor during a shikara ride in the Dal Lake here, the Hurriyat chairman said the "outrageous incident has shocked us all".
Police have registered a case into the incident and two people have been arrested.
"Thankfully some action has been taken against it by the authorities. But, the onus of preventing such incidents lies equally on us individually and as a society. Being a tourist place, all kinds of visitors will come here.
"It is for us to ensure that the ethos of Kashmir based on the values and principles of Islam stays intact. We have to be aware of it all the time and consciously work towards preserving it, especially those people who are directly or indirectly associated with tourism," the Mirwaiz said.
He expressed hope that they will continue to play an active role in "preserving our moral and religious character".
Hurriyat Conference chairman demanded an investigation into the death of a youth allegedly while in police custody earlier this month in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir.
The incident should be investigated and the accused punished, he said.
The Mirwaiz also said dismissal of government employees from the service adds to "distress among people".
"Such measures only add to the mistrust and only deepen the chasm," he added.

In Doda district, five troopers of Rashtriya Rifles and a special police officer (SPO) were injured when terrorists attacked a joint check post in the upper reaches of Chattergalla on the Bhaderwah-Pathankot road.
On the other hand, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan Kabir Dass was critically injured in a firing by a terrorist holed up in Kathua district's Saida Sukhal village around 3 am, officials said, adding the soldier was shifted to a hospital where he succumbed to injuries during treatment.
They said the terrorist opened indiscriminate fire to break the security cordon in the village, over 60 kms from here.
Terrorists attacked the village near the International Border on Tuesday evening and injured a civilian. During a subsequent search operation, one terrorist was killed while efforts were being made to flush out the other holed-up terrorist who is believed to have infiltrated from across the border.
Senior police officers led by the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) are at the scene of the encounter. Police said the area has been cordoned off, and a house-to-house search is underway with the assistance of the CRPF.

In Doda, terrorists fired on a joint checkpost of the 4 Rashtriya Rifles and police at Chattergalla area late on Tuesday night, leading to a fierce gunfight which continued for several hours, officials said.
They said five Rashtriya Rifles personnel and an SPO were injured and taken to hospital. Additional security personnel have been rushed to the area to intensify the operation against the terrorists, the officials added.
About the operation in Kathua's Saida Sukhal village, ADGP (Jammu zone) Anand Jain said, "Two terrorists, who appeared to have freshly infiltrated (from across the border), surfaced in the village around 8 pm and asked for water from a household. The people got frightened, and as soon as information was received, a police team rushed to the village." "One of the terrorists tried to hurl a grenade at the police team and was killed in the exchange of fire, while the second terrorist is reported to be hiding in the village," Jain said, adding an assault rifle and a rucksack were recovered from the slain terrorist whose identity and group affiliation were being ascertained.

On Sunday, terrorists opened fire at the 53-seater bus carrying pilgrims when it was en route from the Shiv Khori temple to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra near Teryath village in the Poni area.
The bus, which was ferrying pilgrims from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi, plunged into a deep gorge following the gunfire, killing nine people and injuring 41 others.
"Reasi police announce a reward of Rs 20 lakh for any fruitful information about the whereabouts of the terrorist involved in the recent attack on the yatri bus in the area of Pouni," a police spokesman said.
The sketch of the terrorist was prepared based on the description given by eyewitnesses, he said and appealed to people provide information.
Extensive efforts to track down the terrorists involved in the attack was underway on Tuesday, with 11 teams of security personnel working on the ground and a multi-directional cordon laid around the Ranso-Poni-Treyath belt, officials said.

One family, consisting of a man and his wife, has been evacuated to a hospital. The husband, Omkar Nath, suffered an arm injury and is reported to be in stable condition, while his wife remains unhurt.
The operation in Saida Sukhal began after two recently infiltrated terrorists appeared in the village late Tuesday evening.
According to a police statement, the terrorists asked for water from several houses, raising villagers' suspicions. When villagers raised an alarm, the terrorists fired randomly, injuring one person.
The Station House Officer (SHO) of Hiranagar and the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) engaged the terrorists, resulting in the death of one terrorist who tried to lob a grenade at the police party.
Sharing details about the Kathua operation, Additional Director General of Police, Jammu zone, Anand Jain, said, "Two terrorists who appeared to be freshly infiltrated (from across the border) surfaced in Saida Sukhal village around 8 pm and asked for water from a household. The people got frightened and as soon as information was received, a police team headed by sub-divisional police officer and Station House officer rushed to the village." According to the ADGP, one terrorist was killed and the operation in the village near Koota Mode in the Hiranagar sector, over 60 km from here, was underway.
The officials said an AK assault rifle and a rucksack were recovered from the possession of the slain terrorist whose identity and group affiliation were being ascertained.
"One of the terrorists tried to hurl a grenade and was killed in the exchange of fire, while the second terrorist is reported to be hiding in the village," the ADGP added.

A case of attempt to murder and dacoity has been registered against three army lieutenant colonels and 13 others for their alleged involvement in a violent attack on the Kupwara police station, according to the FIR.
The incident on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday is said to have been triggered by the questioning of a Territorial Army jawan by the Jammu and Kashmir Police in connection with an alleged drug case.
A group of armed and uniformed personnel from the 160 Territorial Army, accompanied by senior Indian Army officials, had stormed the police station, as seen in a video.
The Territorial Army is a military reserve force composed of part-time volunteers who provide support services to the Indian Army.
According to the FIR, the armed group led by lieutenant colonels Ankit Sood, Rajiv Chauhan and Nikhil forcibly entered the premises of the police station. They proceeded to launch a brutal assault on police personnel present there, using rifle butts and sticks and kicking them without any provocation, it stated.
The situation escalated further as the army personnel brandished their weapons, seized mobile-phones from the injured police officers and even abducted a police constable before fleeing the scene, the FIR stated.
The swift response of senior police officers helped rescue the targeted police personnel and initiate legal action against the perpetrators.
The FIR has been registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 307 (attempt to murder), 342 (wrongful confinement) and 147 (punishment for rioting).
The accused also face charges under sections 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object), 392 (punishment for robbery), 397 (robbery, or dacoity, with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt) and 365 (kidnapping or abducting with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine person).
They have been also booked under the Arms Act, according to the FIR.
The investigation into the incident is being conducted by the Kupwara deputy superintendent of police. Authorities aim to uncover the full extent of the crime and bring the accused individuals to justice, officials said.
Srinagar-based defence spokesperson sought to downplay the incident and said the reports of altercation between police and army personnel and "beating up therein of police personnel are misfounded and incorrect".
"Minor differences between the police personnel and a Territorial Army unit on an operational matter have been amicably resolved," the spokesperson had said in a statement on Wednesday.
