In a major embarrassment for the recently formed “Mahagathbandhan” government, the JD(U) on Thursday ended up conceding the Kurhani assembly seat to the BJP with which the party’s supremo Nitish Kumar snapped ties four months ago.

The by-election was necessitated by the disqualification of Anil Kumar Sahani, an RJD MLA, whose party gave up its claim on the seat and backed its new ally which was pitted against a former alliance partner.

In a major embarrassment for the recently formed &ldquo;Mahagathbandhan&rdquo; government, the JD(U) on Thursday ended up conceding the Kurhani assembly seat to the BJP with which the party&rsquo;s supremo Nitish Kumar snapped ties four months ago.
JD(U) candidate Manoj Singh Kushwaha polled 73,008 votes, while BJP's Kedar Prasad Gupta got 76,653 to wrest the seat from the ruling "Mahagathbandhan" which prides itself as a symbol of what smaller, but united parties could achieve in the face of the saffron party's near hegemony.
The by-election was necessitated by the disqualification of Anil Kumar Sahani, an RJD MLA, whose party gave up its claim on the seat and backed its new ally which was pitted against a former alliance partner.

"The victory is an affirmation of the people's faith in the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a resounding slap in the face of Mahagathbandhan which came to power by fraud and continues to cheat the masses", said Samrat Chaudhary, senior BJP leader and former minister, as he joined the jubilations outside the counting centre in Muzaffarpur.
Former deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi also came out with a video statement taunting the ruling coalition for having made "even RJD president Lalu Prasad's kidney transplant an emotive issue".
He also challenged Nitish Kumar, his former boss, to "take moral responsibility for the defeat and resign, just like he did in 2014 when the JD(U) was drubbed in the Lok Sabha polls".
JD(U) president Upendra Kushwaha, who was one of the principal campaigners of his party, sought to take the defeat on the chin and display sportsmanship.
"We need to learn a lot from the loss in Kurhani. The first lesson is, we must follow the people and their will and not expect the other way round", Kushwaha tweeted, rather cryptically, while sharing a famous Hindi poem that inspires readers to achieve equanimity in the midst of ups and downs.

 Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar Saturday asserted that a united opposition, which he is working on, will trounce the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha poll and "bundle it out for about 50 seats".
Kumar made the averment here while addressing a meeting of the state executive of his JD(U), which was followed shortly afterwards by the national executive.
According to a party release, the chief minister squarely blamed JD(U)'s drubbing in the 2020 assembly polls on "BJP's conspiracy" and also recalled his own reluctance to continue for another term in office.
Notably, the assembly poll results sowed seeds of distrust and the crisis of confidence deepened with the perception that the former JD(U) president RCP Singh had become a mole of the BJP.
Kumar, faced with the possibility of a split in the party allegedly with help of RCP, as Singh is known as, had pulled the plug on the alliance with BJP in August and formed a new government with the RJD-Congress combine. It has the support of the Left from outside.
"If all (opposition) parties fight together, the BJP will be bundled out for about 50 seats. I am devoting myself to that drive (abhiyan)", said the JD(U) de facto chief. He will reach Delhi on Monday on a three-day tour as part of his political endeavors.
The veteran leader, who had been a BJP ally for nearly three decades, also had a word of caution for his party workers in Bihar following the break up.
"The BJP will try to disturb social and communal harmony in the state. We must foil their designs by keeping vigil to the level of panchayats," Kumar added.

'Pradesh mein dikha, desh mein dikhega': posters put at JDU office featuring Bihar CM Nitish Kumar 

The posters have come as a surprise amid speculations about Nitish Kumar becoming the possible candidate of opposition leaders in the national elections.&nbsp;

Posters of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar were put up at JD(U) office in Patna on Thursday, projecting him as the prime ministerial candidate for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.&nbsp;
However, it is&nbsp; not clear if the posters were put up by the JD(U). Videos of the posters shared by ANI promised good governance and gave the slogan 'Pradesh mein dikha, desh mein dikhega'.
The posters have been put up amid speculations about Nitish Kumar becoming the possible candidate of the joint opposition in the national elections.&nbsp;
Interestingly, the posters have come up a day after an interesting turn of events at press conference by Bihar CM Nitish Kumar and Telangana CM KC Rao in Patna.&nbsp;
Asked whether Nitish Kumar, who for long has been fancied as a potential challenger to charismatic Modi, could be the prime ministerial candidate of a united opposition, KCR said &ldquo;bade bhai (big brother) Nitish ji is one of the best and senior-most leaders in the country. I am nobody to take a decision. It will be decided when all opposition parties sit together&rdquo;.
When faced with a pointed query about the role of the Congress in a united opposition and acceptability of Rahul Gandhi, he retorted that &ldquo;you may be smart but I am smarter. There is no hurry. Everything will be decided in due course&rdquo;.

Khaute and Arunkumar had previously sought to contest the assembly polls on BJP tickets but joined the JD(U) after being denied candidature by the saffron party.

Another confidant of Kumar, Leshi Singh, who is an MLA and a minister in his cabinet, said, “I was away for the last four or five days but I have an idea of how things have been. There does not seem to be any major crisis facing the NDA government. It goes without saying, though, that the party will abide by any decision taken by the chief minister”.
Meanwhile, MLAs of the opposition RJD, the largest party in the state assembly, have also been commanded by their leader Tejashwi Yadav to remain present at a meeting which will be held at his mother Rabri Devi’s Circular Road bungalow, a stone’s throw from the CM’s Anney Marg residence.
Chetan Anand, a young RJD MLA who is serving his first term, said, "Rumours of political realignment have been afloat for a couple of years. Let us not make any rash assumptions. Once the party leadership takes any decision, it will be definitely made known to all."

The floor test witnessed stormy scenes with BJP MLAs staging a walk out. They accused JDU & RJD of inconsistency in Mahagathbandhan-1. RJD's Tejashwi Yadav hit back saying BJP puts ahead its three 'jamai', CBI, ED and IT whenever in lose-lose situation.
Hours before the floor test, the CBI raided premises of several RJD leaders in connection with a land-for-jobs scam which was part of party chief Lalu Yadav's tenure as Union Railway Minister in the UPA-1 government
Kumar ended his alliance with the BJP earlier this month and formed a government with the support of RJD, C ongress and Independent MLAs. Earlier in the day, Assembly Speaker and BJP MLA Vijay Kumar Sinha stepped down from his post owing to the majority. A no confidence-motion was moved against him soon after Mahagathbandhan came to fruition. 
During the floor test the house witnessed ruckus with BJP slamming CM and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav. The saffron party took a dig at them reminding them of their war of words post the collision of Mahagathbandhan-1.
As for the new Speaker, the election will be held on August 26. Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker Maheshwar Hajari will run the Assembly till the election of the new speaker

Ahead of the JD(U)-led grand alliance's floor test in Bihar Assembly, the CBI on Wednesday launched search operations against leaders of the RJD, a partner in the alliance, in connection with the “land for jobs” case.

Ahead of the JD(U)-led grand alliance's floor test in Bihar Assembly, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday launched search operations against leaders of the RJD, a partner in the alliance, in connection with the &ldquo;land-for-jobs&rdquo; case it is investigating against former Bihar chief minister and RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav and his family.
The raids are reportedly being carried out at the premises of RJD treasurer and MLC Sunil Singh as well as two Rajya Sabha MPs from the party, Faiyaz Ahmad, and Ashfaque Karim.
Property associated with former RJD MLC Subodh Rai has also been reportedly raided by CBI officials.
In May 2022, the CBI had filed a corruption case against Lalu Yadav and his family members for allegedly accepting plots of land in exchange for jobs during his stint as Union Railways Minister.
The agency had also carried out searches at 16 locations associated with Prasad and his family members, including his daughter Misa Bharti across Delhi, Patna and Gopalganj in Bihar.&nbsp;
According to the investigating agency, as many as 12 people were appointed in Group D posts in the Indian Railways from Patna in lieu of family members of Lalu Yadav getting plots of land.
As many as 16 people have been named as accused in the CBI's FIR including Lalu Yadav, his wife Rabri Devi, his daughters Misha Bharti and Hema Yadav.

Meanwhile, JD(U)'s president fired salvos at RCP Singh, who resigned from the party on 6 August after being denied a Rajya Sabha ticket due to which he lost his Union Cabinet berth. Rajiv Ranjan Singh said that for a long time, RCP Singh was physically in JD(U) but his soul had been elsewhere.
A day earlier, RCP Singh called the JD(U) a sinking ship, and said that Nitish Kumar would not become Prime Minister even in seven lives.
