Justice Dinesh Maheshwari is set to assume the role of chairperson for the 23rd Law Commission, expected to be announced soon. His notable career includes terms as Chief Justice in multiple High Courts.

Former Supreme Court Justice (retd) Dinesh Maheshwari is likely to head the Law Commission, sources said.
A formal notification announcing his appointment as the chairperson of the 23rd Law Commission is expected to be issued this week, sources in the know said on Sunday.
The 23rd law panel was set up on September 2, 2024, for a period of three years.
Though there is a provision to appoint serving Supreme Court and High Court judges as chairperson and members of the commission, usually retired top court judges and ex-chief justices of high courts are appointed to the top post.
According to its terms of reference, the commission is also tasked with examining whether a uniform civil code can be introduced in the country.
Justice (retd) Maheshwari took oath as a judge of the Supreme Court in January 2019 and demitted office on May 14, 2023.
He took oath as a judge of the Rajasthan High Court in September 2004 and was transferred to the Allahabad High Court in July 2014.
He became the chief justice of the Meghalaya High Court in February 2016 and the Karnataka High Court in February 2018.

Stubble burning: Centre tells SC comprehensive law on pollution soon

The Supreme Court Monday kept in abeyance its October 16 order&nbsp;appointing a one-man panel&nbsp;of retired apex court judge Justice Madan B Lokur to check the menace of stubble burning. A bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde passed the order while considering the Centre&rsquo;s stand that it is coming out with comprehensive legislation to deal with air pollution, including the aspect of stubble burning. The bench in response to the Centre said that the&nbsp;only issue is people are choking because of pollution and it is something which must be curbed. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the bench that the Centre has taken a &ldquo;holistic view&rdquo; of the matter and the draft of the proposed law on curbing pollution would be submitted before the apex court within four days.

New Delhi, PTI: Former Flight Lieutenant Gunjan Saxena Thursday told the Delhi High Court that she has not faced any discrimination on the basis of her gender in the Indian Air Force. She maintained that Air Force gave her an opportunity to serve the nation, including in the Kargil War and she will forever remain grateful for the opportunities given to her by the force.
Saxena made the submissions in her affidavit, in a suit filed by the Centre, seeking a decree of permanent injunction against the Netflix, Dharma Productions and others from broadcasting or releasing in theatres or any other digital platform the film ''Gunjan Saxena - The Kargil Girl'', without grant of no-objection certificate (NOC) from it.
According to the Centre, the film which was streaming on Netflix, depicts the IAF in poor light and dents its image as it shows that the force is gender biased, which is not correct.
Saxena, in her affidavit filed before Justice Rajiv Shakdher, clarified that the movie is not a documentary but is only inspired by her life and it is clear from the two disclaimers placed at the beginning of the film which gives a message to motivate young women to join IAF.
"The Deponent (Saxena) does not claim that everything that is shown in the movie has happened with her in her real life. However, the deponent believes that the message sought to be conveyed through the movie is to motivate young women to join the Indian Air Force and, on a broader canvas, the aim is to inspire young women to pursue their dreams, not to doubt themselves and to work hard towards their goals," she said in the affidavit filed through advocate Aditya Dewan.

Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan that India&rsquo;s law and society does not &lsquo;recognise same-sex marriage&rsquo; , adding that the Supreme Court &lsquo;merely decriminalizes homosexuality or lesbians&rsquo;. &lsquo;Such registration if granted, would run contrary to the statutory provisions already in place&rsquo;, he said. A man and a woman is essential for a marriage to not fall within degrees of the prohibited relationship under the Hindu Marriage Act.

The Delhi High Court Thursday questioned Arnab Goswami for running a parallel investigation and trial in the Congress leader Shashi Tharoor&rsquo;s wife Sunanda Pushkar&rsquo;s death case and directed the journalist to be bound by his undertaking on showing restraint and bringing down the rhetoric while covering the matter.&nbsp;Justice Mukta Gupta said the court was not saying that anyone will gag the media but at the same time, sanctity of investigation must be maintained.&nbsp;The judge said once the police investigation is going on in the criminal case, there cannot be a parallel investigation by the media.&nbsp;The high court referred to&nbsp;a&nbsp;2017 order in which it was stated that &ldquo;Press cannot &lsquo;convict anyone&rsquo; or insinuate&nbsp;a person&nbsp;is guilty or make any other unsubstantiated claims.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He claimed that despite being invited to the event he was kept on mute and he eventually exited when Justice Mishra&nbsp;started speaking and he realised the 'game plan'. The senior advocate said that he was not allowed to speak because the Supreme Court had come a level where the judges are afraid of the Bar. Expressing his strong disappointment over the incident he added that he will never participate in an event organised by the Supreme Court till his term as president of the Supreme Court Bar Association ends in December.&nbsp;
