The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) targeted the Congress government in Karnataka for bringing in a law to tax temples. The state Assembly passed the Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowment bill, which requires temples with revenue exceeding Rs 1 crore to pay a 10 per cent tax to the government.
Karnataka BJP president Vijayendra Yediyurappa slammed the Congress for its 'anti-Hindu policies'. "The Congress government, which is adopting consistently anti-Hindu policies in the state, has now taken a crooked look at the revenue of Hindu temples and passed the Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments bill to fill its empty coffers," he wrote on X.
Congress hit back saying the previous BJP governments in Karnataka ignored Temple revenues despite the law.
Karnataka minister Ramalinga Reddy said, "Did your BJP government neglect its responsibilities between 2008 and 2013, as well as from 2019 to 2023? It seems they turned a blind eye to the revenues of Hindu religious institutions and charitable endowments, despite the existence of acts or bills in place since 2001."

The Chief Minister said that everyone was welcome to join his party, but at the same time ruled out that Congress was using force or money to bring Opposition leaders into its fold.&nbsp;

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday said many BJP and JD(S) legislators, leaders and workers will be joining the Congress in the state voluntarily in the coming days, and asserted that his party was not indulging in "Operation Hasta".
He also maintained that the Congress high command would decide whether there should be a change of chief minister in the state or not -- amid demands for it from some quarters -- after the government headed by Siddaramaiah completes two-and-a-half years.
Speaking to reporters here, he said many people from the BJP and JD(S), including sitting MLAs, ex-MLAs, leaders and workers, are coming over to the Congress -- without any kind of push from the ruling party.
"There is no question of doing 'Operation Hasta', we will induct whoever comes to the party. No 'Hasta', No Operation. Whoever comes to the party accepting our party ideology and leadership -- whether they are from BJP or JD(S) -- can we say no?," Siddaramaiah said in response to a question.

Operation 'Hasta' (the hand, Congress's symbol) -- like BJP's Operation Lotus -- refers to an alleged attempt by the Congress to engineer the defection of opposition legislators to further strengthen the party and ensure the government's stability.
Siddaramaiah spoke about a recent breakfast meeting with his cabinet colleagues and said that district in-charge ministers and MLAs have been asked to ensure the Congress candidate's victory in their respective regions.
Reacting to a purported comment by a BJP leader about a change of Chief Minister in the state, either before or after the Parliament polls, Siddaramaiah asked, "Why is he commenting on our party matter? We have a high command to decide. Who is he to say?" Siddaramaiah's statement last week that he would remain Chief Minister for a full five-year term did not go down well with some in the Congress circles, with several party legislators and ministers commenting about it.
However, subsequently blaming the media for misquoting him, Siddaramaiah clarified that he would adhere to whatever decision the high command takes.&nbsp;

Kulkarni's wife Shivaleela filed the nomination on his behalf.
"Our supporters are backing us with a firm belief that 'Saheb' will come here. In his absence I am seeking the blessings of the voters asking them treat me as 'Saheb'," she told reporters.
Since video and phone calls are the only means to reach out to his voters, Kulkarni in a video message said, "I will immerse myself for you and my constituency. You are my strength who backed me today." Former Minister Kulkarni was arrested and remanded to judicial custody in November 2020 in connection with the murder of BJP leader and Zilla Panchayat member Yogeshgouda Goudar in June 2016.
He was granted bail by the Supreme Court on the condition that he would not be allowed to enter Dharwad, the district known as cultural capital of Karnataka as it produced acclaimed literatteurs and music maestros, without the permission of the jurisdictional court.
The jurisdictional Special Court in Bengaluru had rejected his request requesting entry, after which he had approached the High Court where his petition was dismissed by Justice K Natarajan on Friday.
Kulkarni's advocate had argued that he needs to be in the constituency to campaign.
The HC observed that the party, which gave him ticket to contest, should have known that he was forbidden by the court from entering Dharwad.
The case of former mining baron Janardhana Reddy of the famed 'Reddy brothers of Ballari' is not much different compared to Kulkarni.
A former BJP minister, Reddy has been barred by the apex court from entering Ballari in Karnataka and Anantapur and YSR Kadapa districts in Andhra Pradesh in connection with illegal mining case.
Reddy had severed ties with the BJP and floated a new party Kalyana Rajya Pragathi Paksha (KRPP). His brothers G Karunakara Reddy and G Somashekhara Reddy are with the BJP and are contesting from Ballari City and Harapanahalli, respectively, on the party ticket.
Since he is not allowed to enter Ballari, Reddy chose to contest from neighbouring Gangavathi in Koppal district.
The KRPP leader has fielded his wife Lakshmi Aruna G from Ballari City constituency against his brother Somashekhara Reddy.
Lakshmi Aruna was in tears on the day of filing her nomination papers as she missed her husband, who could not accompany with her.
She sought the blessings of voters to complete the projects such as ring road, airport, superspecialty hospital and drinking water, which Janardhana Reddy had started but "halted midway." Janardhana Reddy said: "I am concentrating only in those constituencies wherever I have the scope of winning the election. My target is to win 20 to 28 seats. I am building party at the booth level with the available strength," he had told reporters.
Barred entry, Reddy cannot canvass for his wife or any other candidates that the party has fielded in Ballari district it considers as its stronghold.&nbsp;

Former Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray said in the state Legislative Council that the central government should declare "Karnataka-occupied Maharashtra" areas as a Union Territory.
Speaking in the Upper House on the raging boundary dispute between Maharashtra and Karnataka, Shiv Sena leader Thackeray said it is not just a case of language and border, but of "humanity".
He said Marathi-speaking people have been residing in the border villages from generations. Their daily life, language and lifestyle is Marathi, he said.
Till the issue is pending before the Supreme Court, the "Karnataka-occupied Maharashtra should be declared as a Union Territory by the central government," he said.
Thackeray also asked whether Maharashtra Chief Minister (Eknath Shinde) has said a word about the issue and questioned the state government's stand on it.
The matter is sub-judice and there is a status quo on it, but who is spoiling the atmosphere? he asked, apparently targeting the Karnataka government.
The Karnataka legislature has reiterated the state's stand that the border issue is a settled one, and not an inch of land will be given to the neighbouring state.

Thackeray questioned the central government's role as "guardian" of both the states.
"Has the central government acted as guardian. We expect the central government to act as the guardian," he said.
He also said (members of) both the Houses should watch the movie "Case for Justice" and read the Mahajan Commission report (on the border issue).
When the Belagavi Municipal Corporation passed a resolution to merge with Maharashtra, action was taken against the corporation, Thackeray said. Similarly, some gram panchayats of Maharashtra had demanded a merger with Telangana. Does the Shinde government have little courage to even act against these gram panchayats? he asked.
Rajya Sabha member and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut was present in the visitors' gallery of the House.
The border issue dates back to 1957 after the reorganisation of states on linguistic lines.
Maharashtra laid claim to Belagavi, which was part of the erstwhile Bombay Presidency, as it has a sizeable Marathi-speaking population. It also laid claim to more than 800 Marathi-speaking villages which are currently part of Karnataka.

The portraits of Swami Vivekananda, Subash Chandra Bose, B R Ambedkar, Basaveshwara, Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Savarkar were unveiled by Assembly Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri and Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, inside the Assembly chamber, just before the commencement of the 10-day winter session of the state legislature in this border district.
Earlier, Congress led by Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Siddaramaiah and party's state President D K Shivakumar staged a demonstration outside 'Suvarna Vidhana Soudha' holding pictures of several national and state icons like Kuvempu, Narayana Guru, Shishunala Sharif, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Babu Jagjivan Ram among others.
Stating that it is his party's demand that portraits of national leaders and social reformers should be installed in the assembly and they are not protesting against any one portrait, Siddaramaiah said, without any discussions or consultation unilaterally decisions have been taken to install certain portraits inside the House.
"If any portrait has to be put inside the Assembly, the House has to be taken into confidence as they become the property of the Assembly, though the Speaker is the custodian. It has not been done, it was not even discussed in the Business Advisory Committee," he said.
Noting that he neither had invitation nor any information regarding the unveiling of the portraits including that of Savarkar, and only got to know about it through the media, Siddaramaiah said, "We are not opposed to installing any portraits, but Assembly had to be taken into confidence." Suggesting that portraits of Nehru, Patel, Jagjivan Ram, and social reformers have to be installed and its their demand, he said, "they (BJP government) are now doing it because we (Congress) will raise several issues like corruption, voter ID card scam, farmers issues, law and order, also several scams. In order to divert the attention of the people they are doing this unilaterally. We oppose this." Reacting to the Congress' protest, Chief Minister Bommai said, "Whatever happens inside the Assembly is left to the Speaker and the Legislature Department, I'm yet to meet the Speaker, I will talk to him."&nbsp;

Amid simmering tension at the Karnataka-Maharashtra border, more than 300 members of Shiv Sena, Congress, and Nationalist Congress Party were stopped and sent back by Karnataka authorities as they staged protest near Kognoli Toll plaza at the inter-state border.
Meanwhile, in the contested Belagavi region, where the Karnataka assembly session is taking place, Section 144 was imposed to prevent demonstrations and large gatherings.
The border dispute dates back to the 1960s after the reorganisation of states on linguistic lines. Maharashtra laid claim to Belagavi which was part of the erstwhile Bombay Presidency as it has a sizeable Marathi-speaking population. It also laid claim to 80 Marathi-speaking villages which are currently part of Karnataka.

Karnataka government had built a second assembly house at Belagavi, which is at the heart of the border dispute between the states. Once in a year the Karnataka government holds a session in Belagavi just to maintain its claim on the disputed Maratha-speaking territory.
Karnataka got hold of Maratha-speaking territory in 1956 during the reorganisation of states on linguistic lines.
There have been many skirmishes between the two states over the disputed territory,&nbsp; the recent brawl between the two states created a state of panic due to which the transport facility between&nbsp; the states got paralised.

Embattled senior Karnataka Minister K S Eshwarappa, embroiled in a controversy over the death of a contractor who accused him of bribery, on Friday submitted his resignation from the state cabinet amid a little drama involving his supporters, and not before attending a series of engagements including visiting a popular Lingayat mutt earlier in the day.
The 73 year-old Karnataka Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (RDPR) Minister, against whom police have booked a case for allegedly abetting the suicide of contractor Santosh Patil, submitted his resignation to Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai here. Patil was found dead in a Udupi lodge earlier this week and Eshwarappa was later booked for abetting his suicide.
In the one line resignation letter, submitted to Bommai, Eshwarappa said he is resigning "voluntarily".
Bommai said he has accepted the resignation and that he will be forwarding it to the Governor for further action.
Later speaking to reporters with the chief minister by his side, Eshwarappa said he was quitting to safeguard the public faith towards the party and the government and not to cause any embarrassment to them.
He then once again handed over a copy of resignation letter before the media.
The senior leader said he has requested the Chief Minister to find the forces behind the political conspiracy behind him.
"....whether Santosh Patil's was a suicide or murder should be known, conspirators behind it and parties that are involved should be arrested and punished," he demanded.
Eshwarappa's supporters who had gathered near the Chief Minister's residence shouted slogans asking him not to resign, and lashed out at Congress leaders.
Earlier in the day, Bommai said the resignation of Eshwarappa cannot be considered a "setback" for the BJP government in the state.
He said truth will come out from the investigation and asked the opposition Congress, which is demanding Eshwarappa's arrest, not to become investigators, prosecutors and judges themselves.
Karnataka BJP strongman Yediyurappa, standing by his old friend, expressed confidence that he will come out clear from all allegations and return as Minister soon.
Eshwarappa's friendship with Yediyurappa may have soured to some extent over the years but they have even rode a moped together back in the old days to organise the saffron party in Shivamogga and surrounding region.
The resignation of the Kuruba community leader, who had in the past served as state BJP president and deputy CM, comes ahead of BJP national President J P Nadda's visit to Karnataka to attend the party's state executive meeting at Hospet in Vijayanagara district on April 16 and 17.
As a political furore erupted following Patil's death, Eshwarappa had on Thursday evening announced his resignation as Minister, a day after maintaining that he will not quit.
Ahead of his resignation, Eshwarappa in his native Shivamogga told his supporters and party workers, who were shouting slogans asking him not to resign, that he will come out clean from the allegations made against him as part of a conspiracy, and will become Minister again.
However, many within the party believe that Eshwarappa's current stint as the Minister could be the last such innings of his political career spanning over three decades, as speculations were rife there were plans to anyway drop him from the ministry during the next cabinet rejig.
The 5-time MLA is seen among those who had played a key role in building the BJP in Karnataka. He has been the saffron party's Kuruba (backward community) face in the state.
In case, if this was the last Ministerial tenure for Eshwarappa, as being speculated, it will mark the party's key old guards fading from prominence, with former Chief Ministers B S Yediyurappa, Sadananda Gowda and Jagadish Shettar taking a back seat in the organisation, besides the untimely demise of former Union Minister Ananth Kumar.
With his origins from RSS, Eshwarappa is known to be a strong and outspoken Hindutva idealogue, and has never been a stranger to controversies.
He had earlier said the BJP will not give tickets to Muslims to contest the elections as they do not believe in the party, and claimed that 'Bhagwa dhwaj' (saffron flag), may become the national flag some time in the future. Earlier, in what was seen as a show of strength, hundreds of Eshwarappa's supporters travelled with him to Bengaluru in vehicles from Shivamogga, about 300 km from here, where he visited a temple and party office, also met BJP workers and supporters earlier in the day.
On his way, he had lunch with party workers, met Primary and Secondary Education Minister B C Nagesh at his residence and visited the Siddaganga Mutt, a prominent Lingayat seminary in the state.
Santosh Patil, a Belagavi-based contractor, was found dead at a hotel in Udupi on Tuesday, weeks after accusing Eshwarappa of demanding 40 per cent commission in a Rs 4 crore work.
In a purported suicide note in the form of a WhatsApp message, Patil had blamed Eshwarappa for his death.
Patil last month complained to Union Rural Development Minister Giriraj Singh and also BJP central leaders stating that he was yet to be paid Rs 4 crore for road works undertaken in Hindalga village and had accused Eshwarappa's aides of demanding the 40 per cent commission for the release of the payment.
The opposition Congress targetinf the ruling BJP over the issue, accused the Karnataka government and Chief Minister Bommai of trying to protect Eshwarappa. It demanded his arrest and that he should be booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The principal opposition party in the state also urged that an impartial investigation be conducted by the police under the supervision of a sitting judge of the Karnataka High Court.
The Congress that has found fresh ammunition against the ruling party ahead of the assembly election next year, has formed nine teams, and each team will be travelling to at least two to three districts, to inform people regarding "40 per cent commission and rampant corruption" under the current BJP government.
The party that staged an overnight protest at Vidhana Soudha said it later plans to take its protests to assembly constituency level, to bring to the notice of the people that "Karnataka has been turned into the capital of corruption" by the BJP.

Embattled senior Karnataka Minister K S Eshwarappa, embroiled in a controversy over the death of a contractor who accused him of bribery, on Friday submitted his resignation from the state cabinet amid a little drama involving his supporters, and not before attending a series of engagements including visiting a popular Lingayat mutt earlier in the day.
The 73 year-old Karnataka Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (RDPR) Minister, against whom police have booked a case for allegedly abetting the suicide of contractor Santosh Patil, submitted his resignation to Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai here. Patil was found dead in a Udupi lodge earlier this week and Eshwarappa was later booked for abetting his suicide.
In the one line resignation letter, submitted to Bommai, Eshwarappa said he is resigning "voluntarily".
Bommai said he has accepted the resignation and that he will be forwarding it to the Governor for further action.
Later speaking to reporters with the chief minister by his side, Eshwarappa said he was quitting to safeguard the public faith towards the party and the government and not to cause any embarrassment to them.

He then once again handed over a copy of resignation letter before the media.
The senior leader said he has requested the Chief Minister to find the forces behind the political conspiracy behind him.
"....whether Santosh Patil's was a suicide or murder should be known, conspirators behind it and parties that are involved should be arrested and punished," he demanded.
Eshwarappa's supporters who had gathered near the Chief Minister's residence shouted slogans asking him not to resign, and lashed out at Congress leaders.
Earlier in the day, Bommai said the resignation of Eshwarappa cannot be considered a "setback" for the BJP government in the state.
He said truth will come out from the investigation and asked the opposition Congress, which is demanding Eshwarappa's arrest, not to become investigators, prosecutors and judges themselves.
Karnataka BJP strongman Yediyurappa, standing by his old friend, expressed confidence that he will come out clear from all allegations and return as Minister soon.
Eshwarappa's friendship with Yediyurappa may have soured to some extent over the years but they have even rode a moped together back in the old days to organise the saffron party in Shivamogga and surrounding region.
The resignation of the Kuruba community leader, who had in the past served as state BJP president and deputy CM, comes ahead of BJP national President J P Nadda's visit to Karnataka to attend the party's state executive meeting at Hospet in Vijayanagara district on April 16 and 17.
As a political furore erupted following Patil's death, Eshwarappa had on Thursday evening announced his resignation as Minister, a day after maintaining that he will not quit.
Ahead of his resignation, Eshwarappa in his native Shivamogga told his supporters and party workers, who were shouting slogans asking him not to resign, that he will come out clean from the allegations made against him as part of a conspiracy, and will become Minister again.
However, many within the party believe that Eshwarappa's current stint as the Minister could be the last such innings of his political career spanning over three decades, as speculations were rife there were plans to anyway drop him from the ministry during the next cabinet rejig.
The 5-time MLA is seen among those who had played a key role in building the BJP in Karnataka. He has been the saffron party's Kuruba (backward community) face in the state.
In case, if this was the last Ministerial tenure for Eshwarappa, as being speculated, it will mark the party's key old guards fading from prominence, with former Chief Ministers B S Yediyurappa, Sadananda Gowda and Jagadish Shettar taking a back seat in the organisation, besides the untimely demise of former Union Minister Ananth Kumar.
With his origins from RSS, Eshwarappa is known to be a strong and outspoken Hindutva idealogue, and has never been a stranger to controversies.
He had earlier said the BJP will not give tickets to Muslims to contest the elections as they do not believe in the party, and claimed that 'Bhagwa dhwaj' (saffron flag), may become the national flag some time in the future. Earlier, in what was seen as a show of strength, hundreds of Eshwarappa's supporters travelled with him to Bengaluru in vehicles from Shivamogga, about 300 km from here, where he visited a temple and party office, also met BJP workers and supporters earlier in the day.
On his way, he had lunch with party workers, met Primary and Secondary Education Minister B C Nagesh at his residence and visited the Siddaganga Mutt, a prominent Lingayat seminary in the state.
Santosh Patil, a Belagavi-based contractor, was found dead at a hotel in Udupi on Tuesday, weeks after accusing Eshwarappa of demanding 40 per cent commission in a Rs 4 crore work.
In a purported suicide note in the form of a WhatsApp message, Patil had blamed Eshwarappa for his death.
Patil last month complained to Union Rural Development Minister Giriraj Singh and also BJP central leaders stating that he was yet to be paid Rs 4 crore for road works undertaken in Hindalga village and had accused Eshwarappa's aides of demanding the 40 per cent commission for the release of the payment.
The opposition Congress targetinf the ruling BJP over the issue, accused the Karnataka government and Chief Minister Bommai of trying to protect Eshwarappa. It demanded his arrest and that he should be booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The principal opposition party in the state also urged that an impartial investigation be conducted by the police under the supervision of a sitting judge of the Karnataka High Court.
The Congress that has found fresh ammunition against the ruling party ahead of the assembly election next year, has formed nine teams, and each team will be travelling to at least two to three districts, to inform people regarding "40 per cent commission and rampant corruption" under the current BJP government.
The party that staged an overnight protest at Vidhana Soudha said it later plans to take its protests to assembly constituency level, to bring to the notice of the people that "Karnataka has been turned into the capital of corruption" by the BJP.

Congress partly vehemently opposed the bill, calling it 'anti people', 'inhuman', 'anti constitutional', 'anti poor' and 'draconian', and urged that it should not be passed for any reason and should be withdrawn.
JD(S) too expressed its opposition to the bill, which was introduced in the Assembly on Tuesday.
The bill proposes an imprisonment from three to five years with a fine of ₹25,000, while for violation of provisions with respect to minors, women, SC/ST, offenders will face imprisonment from three to ten years and a fine of not less than ₹50,000.
The bill also makes provisions for the accused to pay up to ₹5 lakh as compensation to those who were made to convert, and with regards to cases of mass conversion the bill proposes 3-10 years jail term and a fine of up to ₹1 lakh.
It also states that any marriage which has happened for the sole purpose of unlawful conversion or vice-versa by the man of one religion with the woman of another religion, either by converting himself before or after marriage or by converting the woman before or after marriage, shall be declared as null and void by the family court.
The offense under this bill is non-bailable and cognizable.

According to results announced by the Election Commission of India on Tuesday, Ramesh Bhusanur of BJP won in Sindgi seat by a margin of 31,185 votes, by securing 93,865 votes, while his closest rival Congress' Ashok Managuli secured 62,680 votes. In Hangal, Congress' Srinivas Mane won by a margin of 7,373 votes, securing 87,490 votes, while his closest rival Shivaraj Sajjanar of BJP bagged 80,117 votes.
JD(S)' Naziya Shakeel Ahmed Angadi from Sindgi and Niyaz Shaikh from Hangal came a distant third, by securing 4,353 and 927 votes respectively.
The bypolls for two seats was necessitated as they had fallen vacant, following the death of Sindgi JD(S) legislator M C Managuli and BJP's C M Udasi from Hangal.
The BJP losing Hangal is seen as a setback to Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, as it is the neighbouring constituency to his Shiggaon assembly segment in Haveri district, and that he had extensively campaigned there.

The move comes just a week after demolition of a temple at Nanjangud in Mysuru which drew criticism from within the ruling BJP and various other Hindu groups.
The statement of objects of the Bill stated, 'it is necessary to provide protection to religious constructions in public places constructed before the date of commencement of this Act. This is done in order to protect communal harmony and not to hurt the religious sentiments of the public.'
Interestingly, the bill also directs authorities not to allow any religious structure and its construction in public places in future.
