SM Krishna, the former Chief Minister of Karnataka and a visionary leader credited with placing Bengaluru on the global map as a tech hub, passed away at the age of 92. He breathed his last at his residence in Bengaluru around 2:45 am. Reports indicate that he had been unwell for some time.
Born on May 1, 1932, in Somanahalli, Mandya district, Krishna's illustrious political journey spanned decades. He was a Congress stalwart for most of his career before joining the BJP in its later years. Krishna served as Karnataka's Chief Minister, External Affairs Minister, and Governor of Maharashtra, leaving an indelible mark on both state and national politics.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed shock at Krishna's demise, calling his contributions to Karnataka&rsquo;s IT-BT sectors unparalleled. &ldquo;Karnataka will always be indebted to him for transforming Bengaluru into a global tech capital,&rdquo; he said, adding that Krishna was a mentor during his early years in the Congress. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu highlighted their camaraderie, describing Krishna as a leader deeply committed to the welfare of his people.
A Fulbright Scholar, Krishna pursued higher education in the US at Southern Methodist University and George Washington University after graduating from Maharaja&rsquo;s College in Mysuru and earning a law degree in Bengaluru.
Krishna began his political career in 1962, winning the Maddur assembly seat as an Independent. He later joined the Congress in 1971, holding roles in both state and central politics. His tenure as Karnataka Chief Minister from 1999 to 2004 was transformative, driving investment and infrastructure in Bengaluru. He later served as Governor of Maharashtra (2004-2008) and External Affairs Minister (2009).
Krishna's passing marks the end of an era for Karnataka politics, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and development.

Newly elected Congress MLAs in Karnataka on Sunday authorised party president Mallikarjun Kharge to pick the next chief minister, party sources said.
The Congress Legislature Party, which met at a private hotel in Bengaluru Sunday evening, passed a unanimous resolution authorising the party chief to pick its leader.
Earlier, the Congress central observers, along with AICC General Secretary (Organisation) K C Venugopal held a meeting with Leader of Opposition in the outgoing Assembly Siddaramaiah and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president D K Shivakumar.
Congress president Kharge had deputed former Maharashtra chief minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, AICC general secretary Jitendra Singh and former AICC general secretary Deepak Babaria as observers for the election of the CLP leader.

Waqf tribunal allows Hindus to hold Shivaratri puja inside Karnataka dargah

Muslims have been given the 8am-12pm time slot for the Urs festival on Saturday, while Hindus have been allotted time between 2pm and 6pm for the Shivaratri puja, according to deputy commissioner Yeshwanth Gurukar.

A waqf tribunal in Karnataka&rsquo;s Kalaburagi district has allowed both Muslims and Hindus to worship at the Ladle Mushak dargah in Aaland on Maha Shivaratri. The shrine was at the centre of communal tensions last year after members from the two communities clashed over offering prayers.
Muslims have been given the 8am-12pm time slot for the Urs festival on Saturday, while Hindus have been allotted time between 2pm and 6pm for the Shivaratri puja, according to deputy commissioner Yeshwanth Gurukar.
The dargah is named after the 14th-century Sufi scholar renowned for his philosophical ideas and also houses the tomb of Raghava Chaitanya, a 15th-century saint. It has been a shared place of worship for Muslims and Hindus for many years.

A Lingayat seer on Monday alleged that mutts (monasteries) are equally affected due to rampant corruption prevailing in the state as they too pay a commission of 30 per cent to get the sanctioned grants released for them.
Reacting to the statements, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said his government considers the seer's allegations "very seriously".
The accusation comes close on the heels of BJP leader K S Eshwarappa resigning from his ministerial position on Saturday after a contractor allegedly died by suicide in a hotel room in Udupi on April 12.
The contractor, in a purported WhatsApp message, had charged that he was compelled to take the extreme step because he was unable to meet Eshwarappa's demand of 40 per cent cut in a public work taken up in Hindalga village of Belagavi district in 2021.
"If a grant is sanctioned for a swami (seer), it reaches the mutt after 30 per cent deduction. This is the plain truth. Officials clearly tell you that unless the amount is deducted, your project will not start," Dingaleshwar Swamiji of Balehosur Mutt in Shirahatti taluk of Gadag said during a rally organised in Badagandi village in Bagalkote district.
The seer charged that none of the government programmes are happening properly in the state.
"There is a pathetic situation of paying 30 per cent commission. The work starts only after paying 30 per cent. Many contractors have stopped their works. There are only talks but no development is happening. Many MLAs fix the rate first before starting the work," the Swamiji claimed.
He added that this was not just his accusation but that of the people of the state and demanded that corruption must stop.
"There is big injustice happening to northern Karnataka. There is no system in place in northern Karnataka. Roads, bus services, education, schools are in bad shape. There is shortage of teachers here. Irrigation works are pathetic," the seer said.
Commenting on the allegations made by the Lingayat seer, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said, "He (the seer) is a great swamiji with a great track record. The entire state knows it. I only request His Holiness to give the entire details as to who paid, for what purpose it was paid and whom it was paid to. We will certainly inquire and go into the depth of the case. We consider his allegation very seriously." The seer's charge, though, gave the opposition Congress an ammunition to target the ruling BJP.
"It is a matter of shame that the BJP, which calls itself as a saviour of dharma (righteousness), is eating 30 per cent commission into the grants sanctioned for monasteries and temples," former chief minister Siddaramaiah said.
The Congress leader who has been calling the BJP government a ‘40 per cent commission government’, wondered why there was ‘concession’ of 10 per cent, and asked the BJP government not to limit to seeking 30 per cent commission from the temples and monasteries.
"How is your ‘Dharma Rakshana’ (protection of righteousness) when you take commission from God?” Siddaramaiah sought to know.
He also slammed CM Bommai for his statement in Hosapete during the BJP executive committee meeting on Sunday that the BJP would lay bare the Congress party’s corruption before public.
"Don’t make empty noise that you (Bommai) have evidences of corruption during Congress regime. Release the document and then talk," Siddaramaiah challenged the Chief Minister.
Allocation of grants to mutts and monasteries is not new in Karnataka. Successive governments have been releasing funds for mutts to carry out their religious and social works.

Embattled senior Karnataka Minister K S Eshwarappa, embroiled in a controversy over the death of a contractor who accused him of bribery, on Friday submitted his resignation from the state cabinet amid a little drama involving his supporters, and not before attending a series of engagements including visiting a popular Lingayat mutt earlier in the day.
The 73 year-old Karnataka Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (RDPR) Minister, against whom police have booked a case for allegedly abetting the suicide of contractor Santosh Patil, submitted his resignation to Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai here. Patil was found dead in a Udupi lodge earlier this week and Eshwarappa was later booked for abetting his suicide.
In the one line resignation letter, submitted to Bommai, Eshwarappa said he is resigning "voluntarily".
Bommai said he has accepted the resignation and that he will be forwarding it to the Governor for further action.
Later speaking to reporters with the chief minister by his side, Eshwarappa said he was quitting to safeguard the public faith towards the party and the government and not to cause any embarrassment to them.
He then once again handed over a copy of resignation letter before the media.
The senior leader said he has requested the Chief Minister to find the forces behind the political conspiracy behind him.
"....whether Santosh Patil's was a suicide or murder should be known, conspirators behind it and parties that are involved should be arrested and punished," he demanded.
Eshwarappa's supporters who had gathered near the Chief Minister's residence shouted slogans asking him not to resign, and lashed out at Congress leaders.
Earlier in the day, Bommai said the resignation of Eshwarappa cannot be considered a "setback" for the BJP government in the state.
He said truth will come out from the investigation and asked the opposition Congress, which is demanding Eshwarappa's arrest, not to become investigators, prosecutors and judges themselves.
Karnataka BJP strongman Yediyurappa, standing by his old friend, expressed confidence that he will come out clear from all allegations and return as Minister soon.
Eshwarappa's friendship with Yediyurappa may have soured to some extent over the years but they have even rode a moped together back in the old days to organise the saffron party in Shivamogga and surrounding region.
The resignation of the Kuruba community leader, who had in the past served as state BJP president and deputy CM, comes ahead of BJP national President J P Nadda's visit to Karnataka to attend the party's state executive meeting at Hospet in Vijayanagara district on April 16 and 17.
As a political furore erupted following Patil's death, Eshwarappa had on Thursday evening announced his resignation as Minister, a day after maintaining that he will not quit.
Ahead of his resignation, Eshwarappa in his native Shivamogga told his supporters and party workers, who were shouting slogans asking him not to resign, that he will come out clean from the allegations made against him as part of a conspiracy, and will become Minister again.
However, many within the party believe that Eshwarappa's current stint as the Minister could be the last such innings of his political career spanning over three decades, as speculations were rife there were plans to anyway drop him from the ministry during the next cabinet rejig.
The 5-time MLA is seen among those who had played a key role in building the BJP in Karnataka. He has been the saffron party's Kuruba (backward community) face in the state.
In case, if this was the last Ministerial tenure for Eshwarappa, as being speculated, it will mark the party's key old guards fading from prominence, with former Chief Ministers B S Yediyurappa, Sadananda Gowda and Jagadish Shettar taking a back seat in the organisation, besides the untimely demise of former Union Minister Ananth Kumar.
With his origins from RSS, Eshwarappa is known to be a strong and outspoken Hindutva idealogue, and has never been a stranger to controversies.
He had earlier said the BJP will not give tickets to Muslims to contest the elections as they do not believe in the party, and claimed that 'Bhagwa dhwaj' (saffron flag), may become the national flag some time in the future. Earlier, in what was seen as a show of strength, hundreds of Eshwarappa's supporters travelled with him to Bengaluru in vehicles from Shivamogga, about 300 km from here, where he visited a temple and party office, also met BJP workers and supporters earlier in the day.
On his way, he had lunch with party workers, met Primary and Secondary Education Minister B C Nagesh at his residence and visited the Siddaganga Mutt, a prominent Lingayat seminary in the state.
Santosh Patil, a Belagavi-based contractor, was found dead at a hotel in Udupi on Tuesday, weeks after accusing Eshwarappa of demanding 40 per cent commission in a Rs 4 crore work.
In a purported suicide note in the form of a WhatsApp message, Patil had blamed Eshwarappa for his death.
Patil last month complained to Union Rural Development Minister Giriraj Singh and also BJP central leaders stating that he was yet to be paid Rs 4 crore for road works undertaken in Hindalga village and had accused Eshwarappa's aides of demanding the 40 per cent commission for the release of the payment.
The opposition Congress targetinf the ruling BJP over the issue, accused the Karnataka government and Chief Minister Bommai of trying to protect Eshwarappa. It demanded his arrest and that he should be booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The principal opposition party in the state also urged that an impartial investigation be conducted by the police under the supervision of a sitting judge of the Karnataka High Court.
The Congress that has found fresh ammunition against the ruling party ahead of the assembly election next year, has formed nine teams, and each team will be travelling to at least two to three districts, to inform people regarding "40 per cent commission and rampant corruption" under the current BJP government.
The party that staged an overnight protest at Vidhana Soudha said it later plans to take its protests to assembly constituency level, to bring to the notice of the people that "Karnataka has been turned into the capital of corruption" by the BJP.
The Congress also plans to hold a protest rally at Hospet, where the ruling BJP state executive committee meeting is slated to be held under the leadership of Nadda on Saturday and Sunday.
The family of contractor Santosh Patil, on Thursday had said they are not bothered about the resignation of Eshwarappa and demanded his arrest.
Meanwhile, Former Minister and BJP MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi had earlier claimed that the same team of conspirators were behind the 'sex CD scandal' involving him and the death of the contractor, even as he demanded a CBI probe into both issues.
He has said that he will reveal certain facts regarding the case at a press meet on April 18, after getting permission from the BJP high command.

In the one line resignation letter, submitted to Bommai, Eshwarappa said he is resigning "voluntarily".
Bommai said he has accepted the resignation and that he will be forwarding it to the Governor for further action.
Later speaking to reporters with the chief minister by his side, Eshwarappa said he was quitting to safeguard the public faith towards the party and the government and not to cause any embarrassment to them.

He then once again handed over a copy of resignation letter before the media.
The senior leader said he has requested the Chief Minister to find the forces behind the political conspiracy behind him.
"....whether Santosh Patil's was a suicide or murder should be known, conspirators behind it and parties that are involved should be arrested and punished," he demanded.
Eshwarappa's supporters who had gathered near the Chief Minister's residence shouted slogans asking him not to resign, and lashed out at Congress leaders.
Earlier in the day, Bommai said the resignation of Eshwarappa cannot be considered a "setback" for the BJP government in the state.
He said truth will come out from the investigation and asked the opposition Congress, which is demanding Eshwarappa's arrest, not to become investigators, prosecutors and judges themselves.
Karnataka BJP strongman Yediyurappa, standing by his old friend, expressed confidence that he will come out clear from all allegations and return as Minister soon.
Eshwarappa's friendship with Yediyurappa may have soured to some extent over the years but they have even rode a moped together back in the old days to organise the saffron party in Shivamogga and surrounding region.
The resignation of the Kuruba community leader, who had in the past served as state BJP president and deputy CM, comes ahead of BJP national President J P Nadda's visit to Karnataka to attend the party's state executive meeting at Hospet in Vijayanagara district on April 16 and 17.
As a political furore erupted following Patil's death, Eshwarappa had on Thursday evening announced his resignation as Minister, a day after maintaining that he will not quit.
Ahead of his resignation, Eshwarappa in his native Shivamogga told his supporters and party workers, who were shouting slogans asking him not to resign, that he will come out clean from the allegations made against him as part of a conspiracy, and will become Minister again.
However, many within the party believe that Eshwarappa's current stint as the Minister could be the last such innings of his political career spanning over three decades, as speculations were rife there were plans to anyway drop him from the ministry during the next cabinet rejig.
The 5-time MLA is seen among those who had played a key role in building the BJP in Karnataka. He has been the saffron party's Kuruba (backward community) face in the state.
In case, if this was the last Ministerial tenure for Eshwarappa, as being speculated, it will mark the party's key old guards fading from prominence, with former Chief Ministers B S Yediyurappa, Sadananda Gowda and Jagadish Shettar taking a back seat in the organisation, besides the untimely demise of former Union Minister Ananth Kumar.
With his origins from RSS, Eshwarappa is known to be a strong and outspoken Hindutva idealogue, and has never been a stranger to controversies.
He had earlier said the BJP will not give tickets to Muslims to contest the elections as they do not believe in the party, and claimed that 'Bhagwa dhwaj' (saffron flag), may become the national flag some time in the future. Earlier, in what was seen as a show of strength, hundreds of Eshwarappa's supporters travelled with him to Bengaluru in vehicles from Shivamogga, about 300 km from here, where he visited a temple and party office, also met BJP workers and supporters earlier in the day.
On his way, he had lunch with party workers, met Primary and Secondary Education Minister B C Nagesh at his residence and visited the Siddaganga Mutt, a prominent Lingayat seminary in the state.
Santosh Patil, a Belagavi-based contractor, was found dead at a hotel in Udupi on Tuesday, weeks after accusing Eshwarappa of demanding 40 per cent commission in a Rs 4 crore work.
In a purported suicide note in the form of a WhatsApp message, Patil had blamed Eshwarappa for his death.
Patil last month complained to Union Rural Development Minister Giriraj Singh and also BJP central leaders stating that he was yet to be paid Rs 4 crore for road works undertaken in Hindalga village and had accused Eshwarappa's aides of demanding the 40 per cent commission for the release of the payment.
The opposition Congress targetinf the ruling BJP over the issue, accused the Karnataka government and Chief Minister Bommai of trying to protect Eshwarappa. It demanded his arrest and that he should be booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The principal opposition party in the state also urged that an impartial investigation be conducted by the police under the supervision of a sitting judge of the Karnataka High Court.
The Congress that has found fresh ammunition against the ruling party ahead of the assembly election next year, has formed nine teams, and each team will be travelling to at least two to three districts, to inform people regarding "40 per cent commission and rampant corruption" under the current BJP government.
The party that staged an overnight protest at Vidhana Soudha said it later plans to take its protests to assembly constituency level, to bring to the notice of the people that "Karnataka has been turned into the capital of corruption" by the BJP.
The Congress also plans to hold a protest rally at Hospet, where the ruling BJP state executive committee meeting is slated to be held under the leadership of Nadda on Saturday and Sunday.
The family of contractor Santosh Patil, on Thursday had said they are not bothered about the resignation of Eshwarappa and demanded his arrest.
Meanwhile, Former Minister and BJP MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi had earlier claimed that the same team of conspirators were behind the 'sex CD scandal' involving him and the death of the contractor, even as he demanded a CBI probe into both issues.
He has said that he will reveal certain facts regarding the case at a press meet on April 18, after getting permission from the BJP high command.
