Prominent Indian-American community organisations have urged the Chancellor of Rutgers University in New Jersey not to allow the display of a separatist Kashmiri flag on its campus, asserting it would send a wrong message amidst the current chaos at leading US educational institutions against Israel's war in Gaza.
Leading universities across the US are witnessing protests against Israeli military action in Gaza.
The conflict was triggered by unprecedented attacks against Israel by Hamas militants on October 7, killing more than 1,400 people. Israel has launched a massive counter-offensive against the Islamic militant group that has ruled Gaza since 2007.
On Friday, a group representing protesting students said that eight of its 10 demands were met by the Rutgers University administration.
Point nine of the demands said: &ldquo;Display of the flags of occupied peoples &ndash; including but limited to Palestine, Kurds, and Kashmiris &ndash; in all areas displaying international flags across the Rutgers campuses." &nbsp;However, informed sources said that the university has not conceded to the demands of the protesting group.
Office of the Chancellor will take stock of the flags displayed across Rutgers&rsquo;s New Brunswick Campus and ensure appropriate representation of students enrolled in academics at the university, they said.
The group's claims infuriated several Indian American groups, which urged the university which advised it against allowing the display of a separatist Kashmiri flag on its campus.
Rutgers University &ldquo;has caved,&rdquo; Suhag Shukla from the Hindu American Foundation (HAF) said in a post on social media platform X.
Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) echoed the HAF's sentiments. &nbsp;Rutgers University &ldquo;caved in to hate and approved the display of a flag that brought terror to the small surviving indigenous minority in Kashmir,&rdquo; CoHNA said in a post on X.
&ldquo;Under this flag, Kashmiri Hindus were systematically cleansed out of their homeland Kashmir - a place named for the ancient Hindu Sage Kashyap,&rdquo; it said.
One Dharma Viveka wrote that Rutgers University set a terrible example for all public institutions, especially universities around the US.
&ldquo;Negotiated with anarchist bullies and miserably caved in granting a laundry list of concessions. Betrayed public trust by failing at equitable allocation of resources,&rdquo; Viveka wrote on X.
Notably, the university has a large number of Indian students. New Jersey has one of the largest concentrations of Indian Americans in the US.
Thomas Abraham, Chairman of the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO), wrote a letter to Rutgers University President Jonathan Holloway protesting students&rsquo; demand to display flags of displaced people on its campus.
&ldquo;We are very surprised to read that you are considering the demand of protesting students to display the flags of occupied peoples - including but not limited to Palestinians, Kurds, and Kashmiris - in all areas displaying international flags across the Rutgers campuses,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;This is a dangerous territory for Rutgers to get involved. By even considering this demand, you are questioning the integrity of India. Kashmir is very much (a) part of India. There is no separate flag for Kashmir. Kashmir residents are not displaced people,&rdquo; Abraham asserted.
&ldquo;In fact, the displaced people are the Hindu minorities who had to leave Kashmir because of violence against them. If Rutgers displays such a flag of Kashmir, that will be the beginning of more sit-ins by students who are opposed to such flags,&rdquo; he warned.
&ldquo;As a public educational institution, which belongs to everyone, Rutgers University has no business to get into the internal conflicts of countries around the world,&rdquo; the letter said.&nbsp;

Kashmiri journalist Asif Sultan who was arrested for allegedly providing logistical support to militants, has been released after a five-year detention, officials said on Thursday.
Sultan was released two months after the Jammu and Kashmir High Court in December last year quashed his detention order under the Public Safety Act.
The court had said the authorities "did not follow the procedural requirements in letter and spirit".
Officials said Sultan's release was delayed because the jail authorities at Ambedkar Nagar district jail in Uttar Pradesh were awaiting clearance letters from Kashmir's home department and Srinagar district magistrate.
"He reached home today and was also taken to SMHS hospital for check-up for chest infection," the officials added. Sultan was first arrested in a UAPA case in September 2018 when he was working as a reporter with a local magazine.
He was arrested for "allegedly providing logistical support to a banned militant group." In April 2022, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court granted him bail in the case "on the grounds that investigative agencies failed to establish his links with any militant group." However, days later he was booked under the PSA.

Police in Jaipur have arrested a man from Jammu and Kashmir for personating as a doctor, a PMO official with close ties with NIA, to commit frauds.&nbsp; In a statment, the police said: on getting reliable information, a team of STF with the help of local police officials and in presence of witnesses, conducted a raid at Jaipur's Neulpur. Police arrested 37-year-old Sayed Ishaan Bukhari, who hails from Handwara in Kupwara district.&nbsp; "During raid many incriminating materials including more than 100 documents were seized. The accused was found to be impersonating as a Neuro Specialist Doctor, an Army Doctor, an officer in PMO, a close associate of some high ranking NIA officials," the statement read.&nbsp; Numerous forged documents like medical degree certificate issued by Cornel University of USA, Canadian Health Services Institute, Christian Medical college Vellore etc. were seized from the accused. Police said: "It was also found that the accused has married at least 6-7 girls from various parts of India including Kashmir, UP, Maharashtra and Odisha. He was also active on various websites/ Apps and was in romantic relationships with many girls impersonating as a doctor with international degrees." "It was also found that he was in touch with suspicious persons in Kerala and some Pakistani nationals too," the police statement noted. He was also wanted in a case of forgery in Kashmir and a non bailiable warrant was issued against name.&nbsp;

Police Inspector Masroor Ahmad Wani, who was critically injured when he was shot at by a Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist while playing cricket in Srinagar in October, died at AIIMS here Thursday leaving behind his wife who is expecting her first child.
Officials said despite best efforts of the medical team, Wani succumbed to injuries this afternoon.
Son of a retired police sub-inspector, Wani was playing cricket at the Eidgah ground when the lone terrorist fired three shots in the eye, abdomen and neck from close range on October 29, a Sunday when a number of youngsters were playing the game.
Wani's teammates ran after the terrorist but he fired in the air and fled.
Wani was rushed to a hospital in Soura where he was undergoing treatment. However, he was airlifted and brought to AIIMS Delhi Wednesday and was on life support.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his father and a brother.
Wani's death has left a deep sense of loss among his colleagues and loved ones, said Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police R R Swain.
"You see Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel are always on duty and here the martyred police inspector has made a supreme sacrifice of his life. On behalf of the Jammu and Kashmir Police family, we stand behind his family in this hour of grief," he said.
Additional Director General of Police (operations) Vijay Kumar, who had immediately rushed to the scene on that day, condoled his loss and said every attempt was made to save him. "But unfortunately, we lost him today," he said.
Kumar, who was officiating as Inspector General of Kashmir range when the attack took place, had said the police had identified the terrorist as Basit Dar, who hails from Kulgam in South Kashmir and was active for quite some time.
Former chief minister and vice president of National Conference Omar Abdullah condoled the death of Wani saying this was the unfortunate truth of the valley where targeted killings were continuing.
CPI-M leader Mohammed Yusuf Tarigami said this incident punctures the tall claims of the Centre and the Jammu and Kashmir administration about the situation being normal in Kashmir.
"Losing such a young, daring and vibrant cop is too difficult to compensate for! May his soul rest in peace and solace and may the bereaved family be granted with forbearance to endure this irreparable loss," JK Apni Party chief Altaf Bukhari said.
The Resistance Front, a shadow group of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the attack.&nbsp;

A protest march was taken out in the Kashmir University and Islamic University campus against a social media post of a non-local student of the National Institute of Technology that has allegedly hurt religious sentiments.
The march was taken out in the Kashmir university complex, located in the Hazratbal area of the city, after the Friday prayers.
The march was peaceful and the protesters raised slogans in favour of Prophet Mohammad. A similar protest was held at the Islamic university in Awantipora.&nbsp;
They said the protesters, including female students, were not allowed to move outside the main gate of the university. They later dispersed peacefully.
Protests were held at the NIT, Srinagar on Tuesday over the social media post that has allegedly hurting religious sentiments. The protesters demanded stringent action against the non-local student, who has been sent home on leave.
Police have filed a case against the student for promoting religious enmity between communities.
The NIT was closed for winter vacation on Thursday, 10 days ahead of the schedule, as a precautionary measure.
Protests were also held at the Amar Singh College and the Islamia College here on Wednesday against the social media post.

Doctors were attending to him and his condition was stated to be critical, they said.

The encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists hiding in the Gadole area of Kokernag Tehsil in Anantnag district, a police official said.
He said an Army officer and a police officer sustained injuries in the initial exchange of fire between the two sides.

Several Jammu and Kashmir political leaders, including three former chief ministers, have demanded a probe into reports alleging that some army personnel forced a group of worshippers inside a mosque to raise religious slogans in Pulwama district.
Both the army and the police are tight-lipped on the matter but sources in both the establishments said an internal investigation is on to ascertain the facts about the alleged incident during pre-dawn prayers at Zadoora village in the south Kashmir district on Saturday.
National Conference vice president and former chief minister Omar Abdullah tweeted that "reports of security force personnel entering a mosque in Zadoora in Pulwama are deeply distressing. It's bad enough they entered but then forcing people to chant&rdquo; religious slogans as reported by the locals there is unacceptable.
"I hope @rajnathsingh ji (defence minister) will issue instructions for these reports to be investigated in a timely &amp; transparent manner," he said.
PDP president and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, in her reaction to the incident through a tweet, said, "Shocked to hear about army troops from 50 RR storming into a mosque at Pulwama &amp; forcing Muslims inside to chant&rdquo;.
"Such a move when @AmitShah (Home Minister) is here &amp; that too ahead of (Amarnath) yatra is simply an act of provocation,&rdquo; she said and demanded an immediate probe into the incident.
Democratic Progressive Azad Party chairman and former chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad also condemned the alleged incident and urged the government to investigate the matter.
"I strongly condemn reports of the alleged Pulwama mosque incident. At this point these are allegations but we must immediately get to the bottom of this matter,&rdquo; he said in a statement here.
"Such things are neither in our culture, nor allowed under the law," he said, urging the government to investigate the incident and take strictest action against those responsible.
Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party president and former minister Altaf Bukhari said he was anguished to learn about the incident.
"...the act is highly condemnable and unacceptable to us all," he said, urging the Centre to order an inquiry into the incident on top priority.
The officers involved in the act be strictly dealt with as such acts can potentially undo the peaceful atmosphere prevailing in Jammu and Kashmir, he said.
People's Conference president and former minister Sajjad Lone said, "The incident at Zadoora Pulwama is highly condemnable. And at the same time &mdash; very very scary. The drift seems to have gone too far.
"Hoping against hope that the administration will do what it takes to ensure that such incidents never take place again. What a sad state of affairs though," Lone wrote on his Twitter handle.
Senior CPI(M) leader M Y Tarigami demanded that the matter be probed in a transparent and swift manner.
"This is unacceptable and unbecoming of any disciplined army. The incident must be probed in a transparent and swift manner. Those found guilty should be punished,&rdquo; he said.

The apprehensions about the influx of Taliban fighters into Kashmir after the fall of Kabul in 2021 did not materialise and no Afghani Taliban has infiltrated into the valley, a senior Army officer has said here.
General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Chinar Corps Lieutenant General A D S Aujla also said that due to the ongoing internal crisis in Pakistan, there are no major worries regarding Kashmir but the armed forces have to remain alert to thwart any attempts to push in infiltrators, narcotics or weapons.
"As far as the apprehensions which were there post Taliban 2.0 are concerned, we could see the manifestations (of concern) on this side as well in Kashmir but it never happened," Lt Gen Aujla told PTI in an interview on Wednesday.
A certain amount of chatter and a certain amount of signature was being reported on the other side in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), but it never translated into reality onto this side, he said.
"So, there was no infiltration of any Afghani Taliban... To that effect, we have been able to control (things)," he added.
The GOC said India has grown in stature in a number of domains, including military, foreign affairs and economy, and is counted amongst "the very best and the most powerful" countries today.
"With that stature today, I think we are in a better position to convey and convince people across borders in many terms, which augurs well for the country. So, while the western adversary (Pakistan) which is closest to us may not agree and actually feels bad about this... the rest of the countries are now... in alignment with us on many matters," he said.
So, there is hardly a chance of something emanating from the other side and disturbing the peace and tranquillity of Kashmir, he added.
Asked about the current situation in Pakistan and its effect on Kashmir, Lt Gen Aujla said the crisis in the neighbouring country was bound to happen.
"We are all aware of what is happening and the crisis is immense whether it is on the political, economic, social or military front, you name a space and there is a crisis on the other side.
"It was bound to happen the way the country was going, it was just a matter of time," he said.
However, Lt Gen Aujla said infiltration and smuggling of narcotics and ammunition through the border remain areas of concern.
"What worries us or concerns us at this point in time, majorly nothing. But other than that, when we look at what the dynamics of Kashmir are. The Army is prepared to deal with any eventuality along the Line of Control (LoC), he said.
Asked if there has been any activity on the other side of the LoC after the political crisis in Pakistan, Lt Gen Aujla said, "Negative. We have not seen any major change." Asked about the infiltration of terrorists from PoK, he said the intent of Pakistanis has not changed.
"The intent still remains very much the same. Given the opportunity, he (Pakistan) does not hesitate to infiltrate terrorists. While the intent has not changed, we have put certain measures in place. We are pretty robust and strong along the LoC and can take care of such events," he said.
Lt Gen Aujla said last year saw the lowest infiltration into the valley.
"I can assure you that till date, it is zero. We will try and keep it to the lowest levels in the months to come," he said.&nbsp;

Thousands of fish in the Dal Lake in Srinagar have died over the past few days with authorities blaming a sudden fluctuation in temperature in the region.
Dal Lake dwellers expressed alarm over such large-scale fish deaths even as authorities said the occurrence was an annual affair.
"I received reports about the deaths of fish in Dal Lake yesterday. We sent a team to scout the lake for samples. We found that a lot of dead fish had collected around Centaur Hotel," Deputy Director Fisheries department Rafiq Ahmad told PTI.
"It seems that the fish have died due to sudden fluctuation in temperature. This is not unusual as it happens every year. You will find similar occurrences in other lakes like Manasbal (Lake) as well," Ahmad said.
It is an annual phenomenon which affects only one type of fish, the official claimed.
Asked if there can be any other contributing factors, Ahmad said pollution could also be a contributing factor as it changes the parameters of the water. "Coupled with temperature variation, it causes mortality among the fish," he said.

Referring to the disruption caused by the protestors, Raina said all these years this is what the separatists sponsored by Pakistan have been doing in Jammu and Kashmir.
"What these gentlemen did, the same thing they did in Kashmir. Whosoever was speaking, right, or for the people, was silenced by the gun,&rdquo; he said.
"I wish I get a chance to visit Pakistan. I want to meet the policymakers to stop funding terrorism,&rdquo; Raina said.&nbsp;

According to the information given by police, the CID informed J&amp;K Police on March 2 about the arrival of an impersonator following which a team was sent to the Lalit Hotel in Srinagar.&nbsp;
The police statement says that Patel&rsquo;s replies to their questions were suspicious and he was then taken to the police station where he confessed. Two mobile phones and 10 fake visiting cards were reportedly seized from him. &nbsp;
According to court documents, this was the third visit to Kashmir.
Kiran Patel&rsquo;s wife has her husband as an engineer and he had gone to Kashmir for development work.&nbsp;
The alleged conman has a verified account on Twitter. According to his bio, he has a PhD from Commonwealth University in Virginia, an MBA from IIM Trichy, an M Tech in Computer Science and BE in computer engineering.
Patel has shared several photos and videos from his visits to Kashmir.&nbsp;
A video posted by him on February 27 showing walking in a heavily snow-covered area with several security personnel.&nbsp;
Patel also posted a video from Gulmarg on February 26. A February 23rd video again shows him with security personnel in Aharbal of Kulgam district.&nbsp;
Also, spread across his timeline are several photos from what appear to be high-security zones like an Army camp. Most of his posts on or from Kashmir carry #PMOIndia. Some also have #JKtourism.&nbsp;
Back in January, he posted pictures with several Kashmiris and wrote that since 2015 the people of J&amp;K have earned a special place in his heart and he is happy he now needs to visit Kashmir frequently before assembly elections in the state.&nbsp;
In the very next post, he thanked the prime minister for trusting his abilities and giving him a chance to be a part of the mission to develop Kashmir.&nbsp;

Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur on Friday accused The New York Times of "spreading lies" about India, describing an opinion piece published in it on the freedom of press in Kashmir as "mischievous and fictitious".
"New York Times had long back dropped all pretensions of neutrality while publishing anything about India. NYT's so-called opinion piece on freedom of press in Kashmir is mischievous and fictitious, published with a sole motive to spread a propaganda about India and its democratic institutions and values," Thakur said on Twitter.
"This is in continuation with what NYT and a few other link-minded foreign media have been spreading lies about India and our democratically elected Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji. Such lies can't last long," the minister said.
The strong rebuttal by Thakur came after the US-based newspaper published an opinion piece on alleged curbs on information flow in Kashmir.
"Some foreign media nourishing a grudge against India and our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi have long been systematically trying to peddle lies about our democracy and pluralistic society," Thakur said.
He said freedom of press in India is as sacrosanct as other fundamental rights.
"Democracy in India and We the people are very mature and we don't need to learn grammar of democracy from such agenda-driven media," he said.
Thakur said the "blatant lies" spread by NYT about press freedom in Kashmir is condemnable.
"Indians will not allow such mindsets to run their decisive agenda on India soil," the minister said.

Kamboj&rsquo;s sharp retort came after Pakistan Foreign Minister Zardari referred to Jammu and Kashmir in his remarks to the Council debate held under Mozambique&rsquo;s Presidency for this month, on the eve of International Women&rsquo;s Day.
India has previously told Pakistan that the entire territories of the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh have been, are, and shall always be part of India.
India has been maintaining that it desires normal neighbourly relations with Pakistan while insisting that the onus is on Islamabad to create an environment that is free of terror and hostility for such an engagement.
The ties between India and Pakistan came under severe strain after India's warplanes pounded a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorist training camp in Pakistan's Balakot in February 2019 in response to the Pulwama terror attack.
The relations further deteriorated after India in August 2019 announced the withdrawal of Jammu and Kashmir's special powers and the bifurcation of the erstwhile state into Union Territories.
