Newly-elected British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has vowed to scrap the controversial Rwanda action plan floated by the previous conservative government. The move was one of Starmer's first acts in office.
&ldquo;The Rwanda scheme was dead and buried before it started,&rdquo; Starmer said in his first news conference. &ldquo;It's never acted as a deterrent. Almost the opposite.&rdquo;
Responding to Starmer's announcement, Rwanda's government has said it is aware of the United Kingdom's intention to terminate the deal.
A Rwanda government spokesperson said the deal which was initiated by the UK is a problem of the UK, not Rwanda.
What is the Rwanda plan?
In 2022, former PM Boris Johnson-led British government signed a with Rwanda to deport illegal migrants. This was done in view of the growing number of migrants &nbsp;in the country coming from around the world, crossing the English Channel from France in boats. Many of them applied for asylum and got it. The erstwhile conservative government argued these migrants should not be treated as genuine refugees because they did not claim asylum in another safe country, such as France, that they reached first.
The plan came under severe fire from human rights groups who called it unethical and impractical. Ahead of the recently-concluded elections, former PM Rishi Sunak had said the first flights carrying migrants to Rwanda will leave in July. But he is now out of power and the plan never took off.

&ldquo;We will finalise a free trade agreement with India, alongside a deeper strategic partnership on technology and defence,&rdquo; reads the Conservative Party manifesto, spelling out the British Indian leader's vision.
Under the Scotland section, the party manifesto references one of the UK&rsquo;s key asks in the agreement to &ldquo;press for the permanent removal of tariffs on Scotch whisky with the US government and work to achieve a significant tariff reduction in India through free trade agreement discussions&rdquo;.
The Labour Party, meanwhile, has been focussed on highlighting how they stand ready to get the FTA over the line after the Tories missed their Diwali 2022 deadline.
&ldquo;Many Diwalis have come and gone without a trade deal and too many businesses have been left waiting," David Lammy, the party&rsquo;s shadow foreign secretary, said in his address at the India Global Forum (IGF) in London last week.

Keir Starmer is set to become Britain's next prime minister after his Labour Party hurled towards a landslide majority on Friday in the parliamentary elections and dealt a bruising defeat for incumbent premier Rishi Sunak's Conservative Party.
As Labour crossed the halfway mark of 650 constituencies to clinch the minimum 326 required for a majority in Parliament, Starmer, 61, stepped up to make his victory speech in London just hours away from formally becoming the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
"We did it, you campaigned for it, you fought for it, you voted for it and now it has arrived, change begins now," declared Starmer to a cheering crowd, promising that the work begins right away.
He pledged &ldquo;national renewal&rdquo; following 14 years of Conservative rule.
However, Starmer cautioned that having &ldquo;a mandate like this comes with a great responsibility.&rdquo; Meanwhile, the country&rsquo;s first British Indian prime minister comfortably held on to his own Richmond and Northallerton seat in northern England with 23,059 votes but failed to turn things around for his party at a national level.
A sombre-looking Sunak, 44, was joined by his wife Akshata Murty as his future as a member of Parliament was decided and chose to use his acceptance speech to also admit his party&rsquo;s defeat in winning another term in government.
"The Labour Party has won this general election and I have called Sir Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory," said Sunak, acknowledging the &ldquo;sobering verdict&rdquo; handed to his party and taking "responsibility for the loss".
He pledged to &ldquo;continue to serve&rdquo; his constituents for the &ldquo;weeks, months and years ahead&rdquo; and stressed that the transfer of power at Westminster will take place in a &ldquo;peaceful and orderly manner with goodwill on all sides&rdquo;.
With some of the most prominent ministers and MPs including Grant Shapps, Penny Mordaunt and Jacob Rees Mogg losing the election, the results are being dubbed a &ldquo;bloodbath&rdquo; for the Conservatives.
Among the new Tory MPs included British Indian candidate Shivani Raja who beat Labour's candidate, former deputy mayor of London Rajesh Agrawal, in the closely watched Leicester East constituency.
Earlier, Keir Starmer won his own seat of Holborn and St. Pancras in London with 18,884 votes and was mobbed by his supporters who could see he was on course to being named Prime Minister.
"The change begins right here. Because this is your democracy, your community and your future. You have voted. It is now time for us to deliver," said Starmer, in his acceptance speech.
While the customary election night exit poll forecast 410 seats for the Opposition party, the outlook as the trends and results tally takes shape is pegging it around 408 seats with the Tories pushed down to around 150.
The Liberal Democrats are also among the big winners of this election, set to bag over 50 members of Parliament. Meanwhile, the Scottish National Party (SNP) which fought on the Independence for Scotland ticket was on course to lose several seats to Labour.
However, a major trend that will dominate the discourse in the coming weeks and months will be Nigel Farage finally being elected as an MP at his eighth attempt and leading his anti-immigration Reform UK to bagging first-time seats in the Commons.
The Reform leader overturned a 25,000 Conservative majority to take Clacton in Essex by more than 8,000 votes, reflective of a wider trend of the party eating into the Tory votes.
Farage, a divisive figure, dubbed his win as the "the first step of something that is going to stun all of you", describing it as the &ldquo;beginning of the end&rdquo; of the Conservative Party.
"There is a massive gap on the centre-right of British politics and my job is to fill it," he declared.

Keir Starmer, the human rights barrister turned Labour Party Leader, has made it a manifesto pledge to pursue a "new strategic partnership" with India, including an FTA, if handed a mandate to form a Labour-led government in Thursday's general election.
Sir Keir, who was knighted by the late Queen Elizabeth II for his services to law and criminal justice, spent much of his career in the legal profession before stepping into the world of politics, first elected as Labour's member of Parliament from London in 2015.
The 61-year-old father of two teenage kids, who he and his National Health Service (NHS) employee wife Victoria have chosen to keep out of the political spotlight, has been credited with reversing the party's fortunes from one of its worst poll performances in the 2019 general election to the edge of government.
The other turnaround Starmer worked on was to try and re-build Labour&rsquo;s connect with the Indian diaspora, alienated under former leader Jeremy Corbyn over a perceived anti-India stance on Kashmir.
"I have a clear message for you all today: this is a changed Labour Party," declared Starmer at the India Global Forum (IGF) last year, setting the tone for the party's India-UK outlook.
"What my Labour government will seek with India is a relationship based on our shared values of democracy and aspiration. That will seek a free trade agreement (FTA), we share that ambition, but also a new strategic partnership for global security, climate security, economic security,&rdquo; he said.
This approach has been entrenched in the party's 2024 election manifesto, which commits to seeking a &ldquo;new strategic partnership with India, including a free trade agreement, as well as deepening cooperation in areas like security, education, technology and climate change&rdquo;.
During a visit to the Shree Swaminarayan Temple in Kingsbury, north London, on the campaign trail last week, he sought to reassure British Hindus that there is &ldquo;absolutely no place for Hinduphobia in Britain&rdquo;. It is a message he has been reiterating over the past few years during celebrations of Diwali and Holi, preparing Labour to form a government after 14 years in Opposition.
Born in London to a toolmaker father and an NHS nurse mother, Starmer grew up in the town of Oxted in Surrey. He has spoken emotionally about his mother, Josephine, suffering from the debilitating condition of Still&rsquo;s disease which she succumbed to a few weeks before he first became an MP in 2015.
He believes he has inherited the grit and determination of his mother and the strong work ethic of his father, Rodney, whose manual labour drives much of Starmer&rsquo;s vision to ensure respect for those who work hard.
"I carry the disrespect my dad felt because he worked in a factory, that really impacted him, that made him recoil from company and become quite isolated,&rdquo; he told &lsquo;The Sunday Times&rsquo; in a recent interview.
&ldquo;It is among the reasons that I will never treat people with disrespect,&rdquo; he said.
In the televised election debates, Starmer has played second fiddle to the natural debating charm of Rishi Sunak and is often branded as being quite dull. But just like Sunak, he also has a University of Oxford background where he studied law and rose up the ranks to be appointed the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) under a Labour-led government. He has often drawn upon this experience as the chief prosecutor of the country in debates in the House of Commons, to claim that he has the practical experience of dealing with criminal gangs.
As a new MP in 2016, the staunch anti-Brexiteer assumed the key role of shadow Brexit secretary under then leader Jeremy Corbyn and supported the latter to fight for what he said was the &ldquo;future of the Labour Party&rdquo;.
Following the debacle of the 2019 general election, he stepped up as party leader and has sought to distance himself from the past party line to stress that Labour under his leadership now has a fully costed manifesto that focuses on the key public concerns of housebuilding, growing the economy and fixing the NHS.
On foreign policy, there is likely to be a large degree of continuity as Labour chimes with the Tory stance on the UK&rsquo;s support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia. Some changes are expected in the approach to the Israel-Gaza crisis, as Labour plans to stop arms sales to Israel and wants to progress towards recognising the Palestinian state.
The overall sense of a Starmerite vision for the UK is of a leader who is itching to fix things that he feels have been broken because of the &ldquo;chaos&rdquo; of several leadership changes within a divided Conservative Party in the past few years.
&ldquo;If you want change, you have to vote for it&rdquo; &ndash; has been the central theme and message of his general election campaign. Despite all opinion polls forecasting a so-called &ldquo;supermajority&rdquo; on the scale of 1997 when Blair stomped to victory over John Major, Starmer&rsquo;s election strategy has been characterised by caution. The Labour leader has done everything in his power to hold on to his party&rsquo;s clear lead in the run-up to the election.
"If we get the opportunity, we will govern as we have changed Labour, which is to take the country from the pretty poor place that it&rsquo;s in at the moment and to seriously change it, so that by the end of the first term of a Labour government people will be able to say, &lsquo;do you know what, I am better off&rsquo;,&rdquo; he declared.
